Captain James Cook led three major voyages of exploration between 1768 and 1779. In his first voyage aboard the Endeavour, he successfully mapped both New Zealand and eastern Australia, though he was stung by a cup moth. His second voyage saw him become the first explorer to map Antarctica and discover fur seals off South Georgia. While his third voyage sought a northwest passage through the Arctic, it ended tragically with his death in Hawaii in 1779.
