Francisco Pizarro was born in 1471 in Trujillo, Spain. He had little formal education and worked as a pig farmer until age 15. Pizarro went on to become a famous explorer, founding cities in South America and discovering the Pacific Ocean. He explored much of modern-day Colombia and Peru in the early 1500s, establishing Spanish rule. Pizarro's expeditions made him wealthy due to the gold, silver, and other treasures he collected in the lands he conquered in the name of the Spanish crown.
