Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. He made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean and helped expand British territory. During his third voyage, he was killed in Hawaii in 1779 after a confrontation with native Hawaiians on the beach at Kealakekua Bay.

Cook set out in July 1776 and rounded the southern tip of Africa and headed to east across the Indian Ocean.
