James Cook was a British explorer from the 18th century who made three voyages of exploration to the Pacific Ocean. He was the first European to map the majority of the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian islands, and the first recorded European to have encountered the eastern coastline of New Zealand. On his first voyage, Cook sailed to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus in 1769 and became the first European to visit eastern Australia and Hawaii.
