Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was a Portuguese explorer who served under Hernan Cortes in the battle against the Aztecs. After exploring parts of Mexico and Central America, he returned to Spain where he married before settling in Guatemala. In 1542, Cabrillo led the first European expedition to explore the west coast of North America, discovering what is now San Diego. While returning from his voyage, Cabrillo fell ill and died on January 3, 1543. His exploration of the California coast impacted the future development of cities like San Diego.

Instead of recurring cycles of dictatorship and poverty, Costa Rica boasts an enduring democracy and the highest standards of living in Central America. What’s more, Costa Rica is unique among all nations for its ‘unarmed’ political democracy and ‘green’ economic revolution.
