Incorporating grammars of social norms : a
discrete element view
• Teacher or writers are challenged to find modes for combining
grammars in materials. They face some compelling issues for
example : when,why,and how should we deal with sociolinguistic
aspect?
• A further issue is the theory to practice question. According to
Wolfson as sociolinguist that ‘’The rules themselves may be well
below the level of conscious awareness’.
• For most writers, the decision to include sociocultural content in
the materials will depend on criteria which are internal to the
particular project.

What is role-play?
• Role play in a simulation exercise where persons take on assumed
roles in order to act out a scenario in a contrived setting.
Why role play?
It helps to develop all domains of learning, cognitive (knowledge) ,
psychomotor (skills) and affective ( emotional).
Advantages and disadvantages of
role play
Advantages
• Energising activity / fun to do
• Allows participants to contribute actively
• It is time efficient
Disadvantages
• Participants may be to shy and reluctant
• Can be threatening to some
• It can become ‘to much fun’ and disrupt the task
Issues for writers
A. Avoid putting old wine in new bottles :
