With no one willing to hear his case, Castro then would realized that his legal arguments would not be
effective in his attempts to stop the government led by Batista. Castro needed to achieve his goal
through other means, even force if necessary as exemplified by the uprisings in the Caribbean. His
alternate approach to achieving his goal was to organize a group of underground rebels who would aid
him in his fight against the oppressive rule of Batista. Castro began to draw followers to his cause

Castro led an attack against Fulgencio Batista in the Moncada Barracks. Castro, his brother Raul and a
group of 160 armed men would attack the Barracks, which was the second largest military base in
Cuba. Based on the fact that the military base was enormous and Castro s men were far outnumbered
in this attack, there was almost no chance that this attack would have succeeded. The outcome of this
attack would be sixty of Castro s men being killed, along with him and his brother being captured

Second Language Acquisition
Recent phonetic work on second language (L2) acquisition has focused on the influence of the native
language (L1) on L2 learning by providing phonetic interpretations of non native production and
perception. Researchers have suggested that the weight of a feature used in L2, but not in L1, may
create difficulties for L2 learners. A classic example of this problem is the difficulty that Japanese
listeners experience in distinguishing English /r/ and /l/ phonemes, which are both mapped to the
Japanese /l/ (McClelland et al., 1999). Several studies have also investigated whether native speakers
of a tone language have an advantage over natisve speakers of a non tone language in discriminating
or acquiring tones from a tone language with which they have no prior experience. For example,
Gottfried and Suiter (1997) found that adult native English speakers were less successful in learning
lexical tones to signal phonological contrast, as this feature is not used in English, than they were in
learning vowel quality in Mandarin. Also, Chinese speakers outperformed English speakers in their
ability to distinguish two Thai tones both before and after training (Wayland Guion, 2004). In
addition, Peng et al. (2010) investigated the influence of different tone inventories (Mandarin vs.
Cantonese) as well as tone language vs. non tone language experience (German vs. Chinese) on the
categorical perception of pitch contours in Mandarin syllables and non speech contexts (e.g., pure
tone).

when we study in Diploma of Nursing: importance of listening, using of Bright space and
paraphrasing. To begin with, importance of listening. In Diploma of Nursing, we study with students
whose first language is English, Therefore teachers do not talk clearly or slowly as all students can
understand it. What Jo suggested us to improve listening skills are extending vocabulary, especially
Australian slangs or idioms. In order to extend these vocabulary, we need to talk with Australian as
well as reading news papers or journals. Furthermore, to understand lecture accurately, Jo explained
