What Is The Theme Of Foreign By Carol Ann Duffy
Foreign, written by Carol Ann Duffy, is a poem depicting the perspective of an immigrant worker
who lives in unfamiliar surroundings and narrates their experiences. In this dramatic monologue,
Duffy uses language and themes in effective ways that allow readers to interpret the different
themes and ideas to highlight the persona s sense of confusion, feelings, nostalgia, and many more.
Through the use of literary devices, regular structure and varied tones throughout the poem, the
author presents strong themes that can be related to the audience as well as to gain sympathy to the
narrator.
In the beginning of Foreign , the persona immediately establish a setting for the readers to be part
of. Its bleak opening and dark message already gives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator describes his scenario and the memories that he has faced during his time in the
dismal dwellings in [the] strange, dark city (Stanza 1, Line 1/2). The narrator describes both the
readers and their own agendas, where both would use the public transport. Work. Sleep. (Stanza
3, Line 1) The author uses caesura effectively in the first sentence because she is intentionally
breaking the flow of the text to add a new form of perspective. In hindsight, all readers do in fact
use a mode of transport, work, then sleep. It is a cycle that should somehow be broken or taken
aware of, so that our lives can be significant rather than a copy of everybody else. Continuing on,
the stanza goes through a deeper theme of prejudice and discrimination against those who are
foreign, such as the persona themselves, as they describe the imaginative sight of seeing a name
for yourself sprayed in red / against a brick wall. A hate name. Red like blood. (Stanza 3, Line 2
/3) This can be interpreted in different ways, once again, where either this is what the narrator
thinks of himself in the strange city of the unknown. An outcast, marked by a name written in
blood, or this is the narrator telling the audience directly what he has witnessed, and everything is
slowly collapsing as if this place were coming to bits before your eyes. (Stanza

Chaucer Essay
A person can almost wholly learn the history of the world though literature that has been written.
This is because the people and times have such a great influence on the writers and their work.
Authors did not simply grab ideas from the sky. These ideas came from their mind; they wrote
about what they knew. And what they knew is what surrounds them, whether it be war, peace, or a
time of transition. In the early centuries, religion ruled the land and people. The first rulers came
about from the idea that God or some other Supreme Being from up above sent forth these people
to rule over the land. Literature from these times was highly influenced by religion. Almost every
piece of work up until the 18th centurycontains some kind of... Show more content on

A pilgrimage is a very sacred aspect of religion. It is an act of religious devotion, where a person or
groups of people travel to a holy site in honor of a religious figure (Quinn 76).
Almost every literary work ever produced at the time that Chaucer lived had religious undertones.
This was because of the simple fact that quot;the church was the fountain of literacy and sole
purveyor of what education there was during these centuries quot;(Vinson 8). The church was
the law. If someone went against what the Bible said, then you went against the government.
One might assume that if the Bible was the law, then the government would be holy, good, and
obey what it preaches, but Chaucer saw, from inside the palace walls, that this assumption was
wrong. Chaucer saw corruption and greed. He displayed this in his story for everyone to see. Of
all the pilgrims on the pilgrimage, a third of them were associated with the church in some way.
He uses these characters to show how corrupt the church had become. The monk in particular is
described as man who quot;didn t give a plucked hen for that text which says that hunters are not
holy men, and that a monk, when he is heedless of duty, is like a fish out of water quot;(Chaucer
11). Chaucer is saying that the monk would rather hunt than pray, which is odd for a man of the
cloth and especially for one on a religious

The Pros And Cons Of Gay Adoption
An estimated 65,000 adopted children are living with homosexual parents (Tavernise). That s about
fifteen percent of the total number of kids in the foster care system. For ages people have been
against homosexual adoption because they think only heterosexuals should be able to adopt
children. Fortunately, as of June 2015, homosexual adoptionis legal in all fifty states. Just imagine
if the thousands of kids did not have a home just because homosexuals were not allowed to adopt.
That would be 65,000 more kids who do not have a home or live in foster care. Some adolescents
might even live out on the streets or in unsafe places. Although many may think that same sex
couples are unfit to raise and adopt kids, children of same sex couples are actually happier and
healthier than when raised by heterosexual couples.
For many, the thought of there being a child with two mothers or two fathers is simply atrocious.
Some people do not think that homosexuals are fit for the role of a parent. According to Gary
Glenn, Direct consequences of homosexual behavior experience dramatically higher risks of
domestic violence, mental illness, and substance abuse, thus putting children in danger. However,
many studies have shown that this is not the case. An individual s sexual orientation does not affect
the risk of getting the behaviors listed above. Any person is susceptible to having a disorder. Glenn
also vocalizes that Children of homosexuals are more at risk for anxiety, depression, OCD, and
bipolar disorder. This is a very dramatic statement, again considering anyone could have one of
those disorders, regardless of their parents sexual orientation. Alternatively, studies have shown that
homosexual people make for quality parents. For example, Sabrina Tavernise suggests that
homosexual parents are actually more affluent and educated than heterosexual parents. Those
attributes are very helpful, especially when raising children. The benefits of homosexual adoption
far outweigh the negatives in this circumstance.
Children of homosexual parents are prone to be more happy than those of heterosexual parents.
There are numerous positive impacts for the children. Various studies have been done to show the
impacts. Of 77

Birth Tourism In America
Xinnan Li Professor Sharifian GOVT 2305 76427 July 28, 2017 Unit Two Assignment As a result

2 From this article we learned that in the United States we are most able to see the area of birth

For me, I think that the fourteenth amendment should be revised to redefine the immigration status.
Birth tourism should not be a way of immigration. I think that parents must first become citizens,
then their children can count as citizens. Otherwise these parents will use their children s
citizenship to stay in the United States to obtain benefits. This is not good, which is parents are use
their children to obtain citizenship. 4 I think American citizenship should be harder to get.
Everyone has an American dream, but we should be work hard to get citizenship, rather than using
the fourteen amendments loopholes to get identity.

Television Shows A Influence On Children
TV shows represent a great influence in children because they learn how to behave by imitating
what they watch on TV. By watching TV, children get the idea of how gender roles are
structured in society, and they think that is the proper way to classify men and women. Since a
young age, children create their own perspective about gender roles and they grow up following
the same example they learned when they were little. TV shows are a media that society uses to
teach people the differences on gender roles and to keep the traditional point of view that society
has been creating through the time; TV shows plays an important tool in the construction of
gender. Women and men have always been portrayed in society in a different way; generally, men
are considered to be better than women. Women are expected to have roles that are according to
the common stereotypes that have been established in society; women s proper place is at home to
take care of the family. The Simpsonsdeals with common stereotypes about nuclear family and
women roles which have always been present in American culture; the show represents and
challenges the ideologies about gender roles and patriarchy because sometimes, the show is
contradictory since it represents women as the typical housewife, and other times, women are
represented as taking a new role because they begin to work outside of the house. Although The
Simpsons portrays ideologies of the modern nuclear family and gender roles, it still

The Outline Of Attachment Theory By Mary Ainsworth
Within the outline of attachment theory, Mary Ainsworth was the first to provide a detailed
description of maternal sensitivity. Maternal sensitivity is a mother s ability to perceive and
understand the meaning behind her infant s behavioral signals, and to respond to them quickly and
appropriately. In study with 73 mothers and their second born child, stability and main level
differences between measures of maternal sensitivity across settings and over time were studied.
Maternal sensitivity was considered at three and six months during bathing, free play on mother s
lap and the starting point and gathering episode of the Still Face Paradigm. Harsh discipline was
predicted by maternal sensitivity at three months, which was fully mediated by maternal sensitivity
at six months. The widespread attention for sensitive parenting behavior is certainly not without
ground, since many studies have shown major relationships between maternal sensitivity and a
variety of positive outcomes such as secure attachment, self regulation, social functioning, and
cognitive competence. What started with Ainsworth s elaborate full day observation developed into
more well organized methods used across a variety of settings ranging from natural daily routines to
play and stress encouraging patterns. In the current study they aim to investigate maternal
sensitivity in infancy in different situations in terms of mean level differences, interrelations, three
month stability, and the

Population Change in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area...
Analysis Toronto CMA has experienced a rapid growth in population during the past decades. The
question is: will current ministry policies on planning cities suffice to keep the current standards of
living if the growth in population continues with the same rate? Detailed analysis of the past profile
of population growth is needed to answer this question. However, because of the rapid rate of
population growth, ministry needs to change policies and set new plans to address housing,
transportation and environmental problems.
Toronto CMA consists of 27 municipalities divided into four types: central city, inner suburb, outer
suburb and rural fringe. Based on the census results available at Statcan from 1961 to 2006, data are

to 2001. This means that the population of inner suburbs has increased from 1961 to 2001. If we
look closer to the data, we can notice that East York and North York population has grown with
faster rate than other inner suburb municipalities. Graph2. Inner Suburbs Population Change from

As you can see from Graph 2, Scarborough has the fastest rate of growth from 1961 to 1981;
however, its population drops by 26.99 % from 1981 to 1991.
If we look at the data corresponding to municipalities that are classified as outer suburb, we can
observe that Caledon has the fastest rate of growth from 1971 to 1981, Vaughan has the fastest
rate of growth from 1981 to 1991 and 2001, and Brampton has the fastest rate of growth from
1971 to 2006 compared to other 13 municipalities listed under outer suburb. Below is the rate of

Loewen Case Study (Memo Format)
Mr. Loewen After some careful consideration and examination, I recommend that we accept SCI
s bid of $43 per share. My recommendation is based upon my assessment of four things: * Our
position after the Mississippi case settlement * Our financial situation * Our business model *
SWOT and Industry Analysis First, the Mississippi case has somewhat damaged our company s
image and may portray us as a company that does not honor legal agreements. Not only was a
contract broken that brought the case originally, but so was the settlement as a number of the
subject to provisions were not met. If this be the case, then it could stand to reason that we may be
viewed as untrustworthy in other agreements. Being that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These financial issues lead me to my next point; our business model and its effect on our financial
situation. While our model of leaving as much individuality of our acquisitions in place as possible;
allowing previous business arrangements, staffing levels and management to continue has been
effective in building our reputation, efficiency has suffered. By not standardizing things such as
automobile fleet usage and sharing facilities, we are incurring more administrative expense than is
really necessary. By not centralizing purchasing across the board the company is not taking full
advantage of economies of scale. As growth continues the administration of costs and the different
contracts will become nightmarish. Expenses as % of total revenue are beginning to move up and
currently stand at their highest level (18%). A move away from this model, especially after the
image issues I mentioned earlier, may further damage our reputation as being the preferred
acquirer. To further complicate such a move is our acquisition of numerous rural homes which will
present a problem to the logistics of integrating services, etc. efficiently. Finally, SWOT and Five
Forces analysis point to an increasingly competitive industry that will be experiencing substantial
profit margin pressure as buyers gather more power due

Argumentative Essay On Health And Social Care
In a world of unequal capabilities, there is the need to be each other s keeper by helping lift up
the less fortunate. There are countries around the world where some children have neither a decent
place to sleep nor call a home, and some families must go hungry for days because they can not
afford a meal. Unfortunately, this is true for some citizens of this great United Statesof America. In
the absence of a social safety net to help catch those members of the society who find themselves
trapped in very hard circumstances, our streets may fill up with more homeless citizens, and we
may see death from starvation. A social welfare system capable of providing the resources needed

Code Of Conduct, Ssts And Other Regulations
1.Introduction
Tax professionals have to adhere to the rules set by the Code of Conduct, SSTS and other
regulations. In order to perform their job appropriately they have to be honest, objective, and
remain conflict free while working with clients. The tax professional assists their client as a guide,
but the ultimate responsibility of accuracy relies on the taxpayer. The taxpayer or taxpaying entity
uses their tax preparer for guidance since they are aware of tax rules and regulations. The
purpose of the tax return that is filed yearly for each tax payer or tax paying entity serves the
purpose of being a summary of activity through the year for the government to access what portion
of the activity spending is owed to the government. If the client is wealthy or an extremely large
entity, preparing their tax return can then become an extremely complex job which will require the
tax preparer to refer to the several rules and regulations for proper filing.
2.Tax Ethics and Professionals Standards
The ethical standards to be followed by CPAs in tax practice require them to know about
applicable rules of the AICPA, IRS, and other statutory and regulatory rules. According to aicpa.org,
CPA tax practitioners are subject to many different standards and ethics rules, including AICPA

Puritans And The American Ethos And Democratic Spirit
Puritans founded America, and for roughly two centuries, defined American culture. Their
zealousness has created cultural backlashes to many progressive movements, but also organized
community picnics, sent aid to impoverished populations (albeit with perverse logic), and
comforted millions of Americans, both now and in the past, facing an uncertain world. Tocqueville
unequivocally professed the proverbial glue Puritanism has on the American ethos and democratic
spirit: Puritanism was not merely a religious doctrine, but it corresponded in many points with the
most absolute democratic and republican theories. But American religiosity is diminishing. Other
forces like materialism, globalism, humanism, and science continue to push the world into a new
frontier. Between 2007 and 2014, adults who are religiously affiliated dropped 6%; though, 77%
percent of Americans are religiously affiliated and 58% find religion very important and those
who identify strongly with religion continue to have the same intensity in belief. With the election
of Donald Trump, many see the dark side of this puritan spirit rising, the parts entangled with our
country s deepest, darkest roots: more racism, sexism, and jingoism. Undeniably, more of these
insidious weeds have sprouted in our democratic field as of late, despite always being hidden a
mere few feet below the surface. Reports continue to abound of individuals being harassed, lockers
covered in phrases like White America, and Muslim

The Stigma Of Receiving Therapy For Mental Illness
One of the most difficult aspects of treating patients who suffer from trichotillomania (TTM),
commonly called hair pulling disorder, is that most prefer to remain invisible. They are creative at
finding ways to hide their illness. Most cover up with head scarves, hats, hoodies, and carry on as
if nothing is wrong.Treatment for TTM is accessible through the NHS, yet the stigma of receiving
therapy for mental illness is still strong enough to keep many patients with TTM away from
psychologists, even when they have suffered significant hair loss. The key to eliminating this
stigma is education and transparency. In order to better understanding of this impulse disorder, it is
important to look closely at the causes, symptoms, and behaviors. Once these are understood,
working with a psychologist to plan effective treatment becomes as easy as walking into their
practice. Here are the basics about trichotillomania, and how a psychologist can help with finding
the right treatment.
What is Trichotillomania (TTM)?
TTM is a psychological disorder identified as an impulse control disorder. Contrary to popular
belief, TTM is not a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The two disorders can
coexist due to their shared irresistible urges, though they are diagnosed separately and treated
separately. TTM also bears a close resemblance to Compulsive Skin Picking, though this is also
considered a separate disorder with different diagnosis and treatment options.

Delaney A Taste Of Honey Essay
Delaney s A Taste of Honey , a kitchen sink play, aimed to explore a variety of social issues
present in 1950s Britain as it followed the lives of protagonist Jo and her mother, Helen. Though
it is the struggles of the working class that prevail, the role and expectations of women are also
widely explored with Delaney frequently reinforcing what appears to be an alternative view of
women, as self reliant and often outspoken (unlike the norm of a passive housewife, for example).
One of the main ways in which Delaney conveys unconventional views of women is through the
character of Jo. From the onset of the play, Jo appears mature forced to be independent in order to
escape from her mother s alcoholism and questionable parenting, evident ... Show more content on

To a 50s audience, the news of teenage pregnancy would be shocking enough but Jo s attitude
towards motherhood would be seen as scandalous (albeit more anticipated by modern audiences).
Jo s lack of maternal instinct is evident when she proclaims how she hate(s) babies , hate(s) milk
and hate(s) motherhood. Delaney s use of powerful verb hate emphasises the strength of Jo s
emotions, and demonstrates how every woman cannot fit into one ideal that society sets out but
when a woman does stray from it, she is only to be faced with backlash. In fact, many Feminist
audiences would argue that Jo is a brilliant example of what a woman should be and is in many
ways better than her irresponsible mother. The juxtaposition between Jo s hatred of babies and
Helen s love for them clearly represents Jo s more realistic, and in many ways mature nature
Helen is clearly obnoxious to her own downfall and parenting abilities, clearly having no idea of
what it takes to raise a child. In this way, the lives of women are presented as trapped no matter
whether or not they follow society s ideal for them, difficulties will be faced as rejecting norms of

Organ Systems And The Nervous System Essay
The six main organ systems in the human body are the nervous system, cardiovascular system,
endocrine system, digestive system, skeletal system and the reproductive system.
Nervous System
There are two parts to the nervous system which are: the central nervous system and the peripheral
nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and some nerves,
whereas the peripheral nervous system includes all the other nerves and it carries information to the
central nervous system and also from it. The central nervous acts as the central control region of the
human nervous system. The CNS processes information and issues commands around the body.
The autonomic nervous system is the command network the CNS uses to maintain the body s
homeostasis. It regulates heartbeat and controls muscle contractions in the walls of blood vessels,
digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It also carries messages that help stimulate glands to
secrete tears, mucus, and digestive enzymes.
Central nervous system
A response to a stimulus is coordinated by its central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of
the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the
environment. Receptors detect a stimulus and send impulses along sensory neurons to the CNS.
The CNS coordinates the information and sends impulses along motor neurons to the effectors,
which bring about a response.
The sequence of a response is:

Metaphors In The Grasshopper
The Hangman (upon his Death bed) concerning his beheading his late Majesty, Charles the first,
King of Great Britain; and his Protestation and Vow touching the same; the manner how he was
terrified in Conscience (Brandon 1649). Literature such as this introduction to the confessional of
King Charles executioner, John Miltons Lycidas, and Richard Lovelace s The Grasshopper prove
that where there is social unrest, there will be writing that responds to it, and mid seventeenth
century England had a lot of chaos to consider. War disagreements and corruption within England s
church were key occasions that censored and shaped the work of Milton and Lovelace. Milton s
repeated use of symbols, metaphors, and indirect allusions to the clergy in his poem speaks
volumes about the political control and religious tensions in England. Lovelace s royalist themes,
and careful juxtaposition of words and allusions in his poem convey the leisure and political
opposition of the Cavalier men to the Puritans. The context and literary devices in both contribute
to making them skillfully crafted cultural references indicative of the rising tensions during which
they were composed.
In Lycidas, John Milton pays careful attention to detail while he commemorates the death of
Edward King, his old classmate, and discusses themes of pastoral life in his pastoral elegy. He
begins with a bitter tone in the first four lines:

Why Does Catalase Decomposes Hydrogen Peroxide
The purpose of this lab was to study some characteristics of enzyme action by investigating how the
enzyme catalase decomposes hydrogen peroxide. It connects to our unit about enzymes because it
illustrates how enzymes decompose their substrates and their rate of decomposition. In the graph of
the more accurate experiment, it shows that the amount of product (in mL) gradually increased over
time until at about 120 seconds. After that, it would just gradually begin to plateau meaning enzyme
activity would no longer increase. Overall, both sets of data show that the amount of H2O2
decomposed gradually increased over time, and after a certain time, the number would stop
climbing. The purpose of the potassium permanganate, or KMnO4, was to titrate the H2O2 in the
solution, which we could then use to figure out how much of it was decomposed.... Show more

We could use the H2O4 because acids will interfere with hydrogen bonds and other IMFs in the
enzyme which would denature it, permanently making the enzyme unable to work. The catalase was
the enzyme that acted on the product, which was hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). And of course, the
hydrogen peroxide, or H2O2, was the substrate and the catalase was the enzyme. Our results
seemed to be consistent because once we added the necessary amount that was needed to
determine the amount of H2O2 in the solution, the color of the solution afterwards would
always be a light, clear brown, as opposed to having various colors and shades each time. This
means that we added the correct, proportional amount of potassium permanganate each time. In
comparison to the class data, less of our H2O2 was decomposed. For example, for the trial for 30
seconds, 0.6 mL of our H2O2 was decomposed while the average for the class data was 2.22

Drums are a lot of fun to play, and every rock or pop band needs them, so drummers are in ever

sized drums and cymbals are arranged into kits, where a drummer can pick from a variety of

It is said that if you can count to four, you can play the drums. Counting till 4 will be the basis of
the beat. Virtually all major rock beats are built around basic 4/4 time signature. It basically means
that each measure or bar of music is split into four quarter notes.
Then with the right hand the hi hat is hit on every count. The hi hats are the foundation of most
basic rock drumming beats as they typically hold a steady pulse while other limbs fill in on the
snare and the bass versions. The rest is actually quite simple. Then the bass and snare versions
should be added on the counts of 1 and 3 respectively. This will be the basic drum beat.
When the basics are learnt you will be able to see how beats are built around this basic pattern.
This is the basics to most rock drumming beats and grooves.
The next step for learning how to play this well is to practice stick control and the rudiments.
Drums rudiments help one to build independence and speed. The two most common rudiments
are the single stroke roll and the double stroke roll. Since drumming is all about beats and counts,
a drummer should be very precise in timing. Timing is a major factor while learning to play
drums. A drummer should be able to create the mood and groove for any song, adding fills and

Water Quality Of The North And South Forks Of Strawberry...
Bioindicators of Strawberry Creek Edar Liu, Cindy Sandoval Espinoza, Ethan Schlatter, Weirui
Xiao October 9, 2016 Biology 1B, Section 224, Group 1 Abstract: Through our research we
aimed to determine if there were any differences in water quality of both the north and south
forks of Strawberry Creek. As time progresses and the environment changes it is important to
keep track of how certain species are being impacted by these features, and how they cope with
change. We hypothesized that due to the lack of pollution, the south fork will promote a greater
diversity of macroinvertebrates. This was due to the fact that there was less runoff and trash that
could be introduced to the water in the south fork, than there was in the north fork. We gathered
data by analyzing the different organisms living in both forks. We collected a total of fifty vials
composed of five organisms from each fork, and inspected them under microscopic view. After
gathering data and identifying the different kinds of organisms living in the different forks we
assessed whether the organisms from the samples could live in high or low resolution water. We
also took a t test to assess the probability of these differences being due to relevant factors or by
chance. Our major findings suggest that organisms in the south fork showed a higher demand to
living in cleaner water indicating that our hypothesis was correct. Introduction: Urbanization has a

need higher competencies in leadership, health policy, teamwork and collaboration to deliver the

Have you ever tried to shoot a dart at a bullseye? Very hard to do right. Well operating a business

unless you can see in the dark.
2. Not tracking against your actuals.
Once you have a budget you must compare how you are performing to that budget regularly.
Minimally once per quarter. If you don t do this critical step then you have no idea how good or

Exploring The Roots Of The Recurring Subjects And Symbols...
After nearly two centuries completely lacking in images, early Christians finally developed a
pictorial language to express their faith. The conventions developed early on would come to define
the middle ages, an entire era of almost exclusively Christian images. Early Christians adopted
classical conventions for their art, which would serve an opposing purpose for outsiders and
initiates. For outsiders, the symbols meant no harm. But to followers of the faith, the images are
loaded with meaning. The meaning inherent in the history of the symbol, when combined with a
biblical context, creates a full and multi faceted iconographic tradition. The purpose of this paper is
to explore the roots of the recurring subjects and symbols evident in the funerary paintings in
Catacombs of Domitilla in Rome.
Funerary paintings and sculpture provide the most thorough evidence of early Christian art. An
exceptional visual tradition has been preserved in the vast network of underground burial systems:
the Roman catacombs. One of the most extensive of these is the Catacomb of Domitilla. Beginning
in the third century CE, the Catacombs of Domitilla housed thousands of bodies from families rich
and poor, and extended for over seventeen kilometers in four distinct subterranean levels. In terms
of style, most of the works are indistinguishable from Roman paintings. If anything, the art style is a
more rushed and cramped version of illusionistic Roman wall painting. The use of iconography is

I like the base group because it gives the students a home. The base groups help open the door to

The base groups will merely serve as a home. Depending on the activity the class is doing I will use

In the Formal learning groups, as well as in the ad hoc and the base groups, I will employ two
types of group activities the STAD system and the TGT system.

Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers and Assimilation of Jews
An entire chapter of Eric Liu s memoir, The Accidental Asian, is founded on the supposition that
Jews today serve as a metaphor for assimilation into American culture. According to Liu, this is due
to the ease with which Jews have been able to assimilate. However, the progress that Jews have
made in embracing and affecting America has been gradual rather than instantaneous, as evidenced
by the character Sara Smolensky in Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers. Sara is not the symbol
of an assimilated Jew, but instead represents a period of transition between complete assimilation
into American identity and complete dissimilation from her Jewish and Polish heritage, ... Show

Sara s willing dedication to her American identity, as represented by her clothing, is contrasted with
the blood relationship she has with her mother, and by extension her actions separate her from her
entire ancestry and ethnicity. Denounced for her refusal to comply with the traditions of her
culture, and disdainfully called an Americanerin, Sara experiences the social death that Sollors
describes, a result of her cultural relationships having become mutually antagonistic (xx). In this
scene she temporarily ceases to be Jewish and becomes to her people and to her family merely a
female American. This schism is paralleled by a more subtle contrast at the conclusion of the same
chapter that should be noted, when Sara hears the poverty stricken cries that Charity saves you
from death (256)! This statement of course cannot be literally true, but displays a further contrast
between the voluntary and the natural on a more literal level: voluntary generosity versus natural
inevitable death.
Sara is further distanced from her ethnicity through her resistance to the patriarchal doctrines of
Judaism that are followed by her family. Sexually biased Judaism is represented by her father and
his frequent citations of the Torah to justify such a position. When Sara refuses to marry the
wealthy Max Goldstein, her father tells her that the Torah says What s a woman without a man?
Less than nothing a blotted out existence. No life on earth and no

Internal Conflict In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
An internal conflict is defined as a mental struggle arising from opposing demands or impulses.
The struggle can be about the simplest of things, or it could even be about a more extensive and
vexatious complication. In the book, the Lord of the Flies, author William Golding, wrote about a
strange, but unique character named Simon. This character went through many tough experiences
and conflicts between other characters, nature, and even himself. This is occured in Simon
because man, is indeed, inherently evil and malicious. How the author structured this book was
significant in a way that it strongly showed how Simon was behaving and acting. Golding used
numerous examples of symbolism and sophisticated word choice to show that Simon s internal
struggle was about either becoming evil or staying peaceful. The internal struggle within Simon
was portrayed through Golding s substantial use of symbolism. In chapter eight, the author wrote
about butterflies around Simon s spot and how they show an important characteristic of the island
which the boys were stranded on. He wrote, Even the butterflies deserted the open space where
the obscene thing grinned and dripped (Golding, 141). The butterflies around Simon s relaxation
area symbolize peace and tranquility. Once, these butterflies left, his spot was now filled with a
sense of darkness and evil. This is showing his struggle because now something positive around his
only place of happiness is gone. Golding was trying to show,

The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway Essay
The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway The Sun Also Risesopens with the narrator, Jake

War I who now works as a journalist in Paris. Cohn is also an American expatriate, although not a

Several weeks later, while Brett and Cohn are both traveling outside of Paris, one of Jake s
friends, a fellow American war veteran named Bill Gorton, arrives in Paris. Bill and Jake make
plans to leave for Spain to do some fishing and later attend the fiesta at Pamplona. Jake makes
plans to meet Cohn on the way to Pamplona. Jake runs into Brett, who has returned from San
Sebastian; with her is Mike, her fiancГ©. They ask if they may join Jake in Spain, and he
politely responds that they may. When Mike leaves for a moment, Brett reveals to Jake that she
and Cohn were in San Sebastian together. Bill and Jake take a train from Paris to Bayonne, in
the south of France, where they meet Cohn. The three men travel together into Spain, to
Pamplona. They plan on meeting Brett and Mike that night, but the couple does not show up.
Bill and Jake decide to leave for a small town called Burguete to fish, but Cohn chooses to stay

Ode to the West Wind Essay
The wind is one of the most powerful forces known to man. It can do things that man has been
envious of and also terrified of throughout the centuries. It is no wonder why Shelley decided to
write a poem of praise in its name. Shelley writes this poem with the speaker being a poet himself
frustrated that he can not tell the world the things that he feels the world needs to know.
Throughout the poem he continually is describing what the wind can do and what he wishes the
wind could do for him. It may be better to describe Shelley before I try to interpret the poem.
Shelley was an intelligent man who studied at Oxford before being kicked out for refusing to admit
authorship of The Necessity of Atheism. He continued to write and express... Show more content on

Shelley was bringing ...his two countries closer together with the structure of a poem. (Shmoop
Editorial Team) It could also be argued that Shelley was using the terza rima to emulate Dante
since he was one the great writers of that time. Although these are very plausible thoughts on
what this structure could mean, we still may never know what exactly was meant by it. After a
first read of the poem many literary techniques that Shelley used to catch the eye of the reader.
The imagery that is used in this poem is matched by no other poem that I have read, using scenes
of yellow, and black, and pale, and hectic red (Shelley 4) leaves and of the crystГ lline streams
(Shelley 31) to give a clear mental picture of exactly what Shelley wants to portray. Metaphors
are also a huge contributing factor to his ability to be able to describe what exactly he wants to
describe. Throughout the poem he refers to his thoughts being leaves that are dead and withered
and that he wishes the west wind could take these leaves of his and disperse them like it does the
literal leaves of the fall. Along with the imagery and metaphors he also uses allusions to Greek
mythology describe how the wind is powerful enough to move the clouds Like the bright hair
uplifted from the head/ Of some fierce Mænad (Shelley 20 21). His word choice throughout the
poem is mainly to credit for the way that his message is portrayed. The poem is

Anti Bias Curriculum For Children And Families From...
As a Family Advocate, I work with families and children from different backgrounds and
cultures. After completing the observations, anti bias curriculum is a must to reflect the cultural
and background of the families and children in the program. Many families I work with are low
income. My goal is to create an environment where children and families from different
backgrounds can feel comfortable and belonging. I would like to work closely with families and
provide the support that they may need. There are countless ways biased against low income
families. A large part of the mold is just plain incorrect. Most people believe that the poor are
poor because of their own shortcomings instead inequitable access to services and opportunities.
There are litanies of stereotypes towards poor people, such as poor people are lazy and
uneducated. They are alcoholics and drug addicts. They do not want to work and depend on social
welfare system. They don t know how to teach their children and let them run wild and dirty. Poor
people don t have knowledge and good for labor but nothing else. Other common stereotypes about
the poor show that they are inattentive and, as a result, parents are not effective. Low income
parents or guardians who do not attend parent teacher meetings can become the target of
stereotyping, or worse, getting blamed by those educators. Because of these stigmatic, even the low
income also biases against themselves. They believe that they could not improve

Periodized heavy resistance training was performed for 12 wk. Creatine or placebo capsules
were consumed 25 grams per day for 1 wk followed by a maintenance dose of 5 grams per day
for the remainder of the training. RESULTS: After 12 wk, significant increases in body mass and
fat free mass were greater in creatine than placebo subjects. After 12 wks, increases in bench press
and squat were greater in creatine subjects. Compared with placebo subjects, creatine subjects
demonstrated significantly greater increases in muscle total, creatine concentrations were
unchanged in placebo subjects. Muscle creatine was significantly elevated after 1 wk in creatine
subjects (22%), and values remained significantly greater than placebo subjects after 12 wk.
Average volume lifted in the bench press during training was significantly greater in creatine
subjects during weeks 5 8. No negative side effects to the supplementation were reported.
CONCLUSION: Creatine supplementation enhanced fat free mass, physical performance, and
muscle morphology in response to heavy resistance training, presumably mediated via higher
quality training sessions. This study was conducted by Richard B. Kreider of the Exercise Sport

There are several versions of the origin of calypso which emerged as an identifiable genre
towards the end of the nineteenth century. Calypso represents a mixture of several folk songs in
African tradition (history of Carib music 1). There are a few theories to where the word calypso
originated. The Carib word caieto meaning a joyous song and the French patois carrousseaux
from the archaic French word carouse meaning a drinking party or festivity (Trinidad Calypso

the late 18th century. At this time this type of music was not yet pronounce calypso . In a good
calypso song the lyrics would grasp three main dimensions. The first is extempore. If the
individual could produce lyrics at the spur of the moment it was greatly admired by the listeners.
Second, added comments of social and political issues were slid into a verse. Thirdly the calypso
singers would trade insults. This would later lead to what would become known as calypso wars.
Today the lyrics of calypso contain so much information on political

Solar Eclipse Research Paper
To me, theatre is a solar eclipse. Everyone knows about it. There are pictures and videos all
attempting to capture the unfathomable beauty. But, when all s said and done, it must be
experienced. A recording of a solar eclipse, just like a recording of a show, can never encapsulate
the wonder from experiencing it in person. Even though it means it s harder to access and
experience theatre, it s one of the reasons I fell in love with it.
I started engaging in theatre in sixth grade, playing a nun in the ensemble of The Sound of Music.
My mind opened to all sorts of shows, and I began listening to everything from Carousel to Little
Shop of Horrors. I joined the school s advanced theatre class and then went on to high school. In

way it inspires me transcends those experiences, as wonderful as they were. During one of my
trips, I stood on the edge of a New York Citysidewalk, waiting to cross the street to get to a
theater. People surrounded me on every side except directly in front of me, where cars moved
past me. Somehow, a miracle happened for a moment, surrounded by people and cars and noise,
I felt completely alone. When I returned to reality, I thought about the millions of lives and
stories contained on Manhattan Island. It was overwhelming, yes, but it also made me realize
how incredible New York City truly is not because of its theaters or skyscrapers or parks, but
because of its people. I always say that cities have an urban heartbeat that send sparks through me,
creating inspiration. But feeling alone in New York helped me to realize that the urban heartbeat I
feel is made up of the people who create the city. Truly, no place better demonstrates this effect
better than New York City. I know I will keep returning there because of this effect, as it inspires

Essay on Plagiarism
According to the code of conduct at Clarion University plagiarism is the use of another s words
without attribution and without enclosing the words in quotation marks. Plagiarism may also be
defined as the act of taking the ideas or expressions of ideas of another person and representing
them as one s own even if the original paper has been paraphrased or otherwise modified. (

Barnbaum) If there is a direct quote that would be useful then the quote needs taken directly with
both quotes and citations, or when paraphrasing information it needs to be cited. If neither of
these is done then it is plagiarizing. (C. Barnbaum) This form of plagiarism is what I think a lot
of people do because they may agree with another person s thoughts and then want to make it in
to their own so they will change a few words around to make it sound like their own words. The
third type of plagiarism I have found is called Style Plagiarism. (C. Barnbaum) This plagiarism
is said to be the most common trap that students fall into. (C. Barnbaum) Even if you aren t
copying word for word but the same sentence or paragraph order is followed then this would be
plagiarism because this is considered taking the authors reasoning style. (C. Barnbaum)
Plagiarism does not always mean copying information but it can also be stealing the writing
format as well. I think this can be considered a trap because people think it s not okay to steal
information but taking the order, outline, flow, or style it is written in is different but really it is
still a form of plagiarism. The next kind of plagiarism is called Metaphor plagiarism which is not
always taking information word for word but using the same comparison or words to describe
something. (C. Barnbaum) An original idea that someone else takes

oka crisis
Throughout history, the Native people of North America and the Europeans have continually had
arguments and disputes over land. To this day there are still issues trying to be resolved. Twenty
years ago, the beginning of one of the most violent and intense land disputes in present day Canada
occurred. This event is now referred to as the Oka Crisis, named after the town Oka in Quebec.
This crisis caused a confrontation involving the Quebec provincial police, the Canadian armed
forces and the Mohawk people.1 The stand that the Mohawk people took in the town of Oka
became a major revelation for the aboriginal people spreading awareness of aboriginal rights
across Canada. This paper is divided into four sections. First, I will introduce... Show more content

Since the land claim by the Mohawks had been rejected a few years prior, there was no
government objection to the development.13 In March of 1990, members of the Mohawk
society set up a protest in Oka with great anger over the expansion of the golf course.14 The
Mohawk were especially upset that the expansion would occur on top of an ancestral burial
ground. In addition, it would occur on land they thought they had been granted in the 1700 s.
Furthermore, this is the land that was disputed in the 1961 law suit. Some members of the
Mohawk community built a barricade as a form of protest, preventing construction crews from
entering what they believed was their land. The barricades were also set up along major highways
as well as the Mercier Bridge.15
Tension was increased on July 11. The Quebec provincial government refused to negotiate with
the Mohawks. The police were called in and it escalated into an armed conflict. Bullet exchanges
were made and as a result, a Quebec officer was shot and later died.16 After hours of
confrontation, canisters of tear gas were set off by the Quebec police. 17 As word of the
altercation got out, Aboriginal people from across North America rallied to support the Mohawk.
Later, the RCMP were called in but were still unable to contain the chaos. This led to the Canadian
army being called in.
During the crisis, three routes were blocked off in Oka throughout the seventy eight days of the
crisis.18 This

Lather And Nothing Else Symbolism
Lather and Nothing Else, a story that takes place in South America around the time of the early
1900 s. The atmosphere that revolves around the story consists of suspense, worry, and tension;
keeping the reader intrigued. By using first person point of view, the reader doesn t know the
thoughts of the enemy (Torres). Yet the author s use of symbolism, irony, and first person point
of view is very effective. It allows the reader to establish a deeper emotional connection to the
scenario being put forth in front of them and increasing the level of tension throughout the story.
The perspective of Lather and Nothing Else is in first person. The author s decision to write the
piece in this perspective is very effective because it has the ability to show the in depth emotions,
thoughts, and personality of the town barber. The reader can view the character in all directions,
gaining empathy and sympathy for him. Also, it gives the reader great insight into the conflict of
the story (the dilemma inside of the barber s head) and let us see all the things the barber must

This means our obvious choice for the unknown is diethyl ether because there are no double bonds
involved and no nitro compounds.
It was very easy to make an error because of the high possibility that we had overlapping
frequencies, or because two unknowns could be very similar. In order to avoid errors, it was
necessary to make sure the frequencies were read very carefully and the spectra bonds were
correctly identified. If we were to make an error in distinguishing an unknown, this would
automatically cause us to have 2 or more incorrect Unknowns being identified. The Unknowns must
be assessed by the frequency chart and bond identification.

  • 2. What Is The Theme Of Foreign By Carol Ann Duffy Foreign, written by Carol Ann Duffy, is a poem depicting the perspective of an immigrant worker who lives in unfamiliar surroundings and narrates their experiences. In this dramatic monologue, Duffy uses language and themes in effective ways that allow readers to interpret the different themes and ideas to highlight the persona s sense of confusion, feelings, nostalgia, and many more. Through the use of literary devices, regular structure and varied tones throughout the poem, the author presents strong themes that can be related to the audience as well as to gain sympathy to the narrator. In the beginning of Foreign , the persona immediately establish a setting for the readers to be part of. Its bleak opening and dark message already gives ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The narrator describes his scenario and the memories that he has faced during his time in the dismal dwellings in [the] strange, dark city (Stanza 1, Line 1/2). The narrator describes both the readers and their own agendas, where both would use the public transport. Work. Sleep. (Stanza 3, Line 1) The author uses caesura effectively in the first sentence because she is intentionally breaking the flow of the text to add a new form of perspective. In hindsight, all readers do in fact use a mode of transport, work, then sleep. It is a cycle that should somehow be broken or taken aware of, so that our lives can be significant rather than a copy of everybody else. Continuing on, the stanza goes through a deeper theme of prejudice and discrimination against those who are foreign, such as the persona themselves, as they describe the imaginative sight of seeing a name for yourself sprayed in red / against a brick wall. A hate name. Red like blood. (Stanza 3, Line 2 /3) This can be interpreted in different ways, once again, where either this is what the narrator thinks of himself in the strange city of the unknown. An outcast, marked by a name written in blood, or this is the narrator telling the audience directly what he has witnessed, and everything is slowly collapsing as if this place were coming to bits before your eyes. • 3. Chaucer Essay A person can almost wholly learn the history of the world though literature that has been written. This is because the people and times have such a great influence on the writers and their work. Authors did not simply grab ideas from the sky. These ideas came from their mind; they wrote about what they knew. And what they knew is what surrounds them, whether it be war, peace, or a time of transition. In the early centuries, religion ruled the land and people. The first rulers came about from the idea that God or some other Supreme Being from up above sent forth these people to rule over the land. Literature from these times was highly influenced by religion. Almost every piece of work up until the 18th centurycontains some kind of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A pilgrimage is a very sacred aspect of religion. It is an act of religious devotion, where a person or groups of people travel to a holy site in honor of a religious figure (Quinn 76). Almost every literary work ever produced at the time that Chaucer lived had religious undertones. This was because of the simple fact that quot;the church was the fountain of literacy and sole purveyor of what education there was during these centuries quot;(Vinson 8). The church was the law. If someone went against what the Bible said, then you went against the government. One might assume that if the Bible was the law, then the government would be holy, good, and obey what it preaches, but Chaucer saw, from inside the palace walls, that this assumption was wrong. Chaucer saw corruption and greed. He displayed this in his story for everyone to see. Of all the pilgrims on the pilgrimage, a third of them were associated with the church in some way. He uses these characters to show how corrupt the church had become. The monk in particular is described as man who quot;didn t give a plucked hen for that text which says that hunters are not holy men, and that a monk, when he is heedless of duty, is like a fish out of water quot;(Chaucer 11). Chaucer is saying that the monk would rather hunt than pray, which is odd for a man of the cloth and especially for one on a religious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Pros And Cons Of Gay Adoption An estimated 65,000 adopted children are living with homosexual parents (Tavernise). That s about fifteen percent of the total number of kids in the foster care system. For ages people have been against homosexual adoption because they think only heterosexuals should be able to adopt children. Fortunately, as of June 2015, homosexual adoptionis legal in all fifty states. Just imagine if the thousands of kids did not have a home just because homosexuals were not allowed to adopt. That would be 65,000 more kids who do not have a home or live in foster care. Some adolescents might even live out on the streets or in unsafe places. Although many may think that same sex couples are unfit to raise and adopt kids, children of same sex couples are actually happier and healthier than when raised by heterosexual couples. For many, the thought of there being a child with two mothers or two fathers is simply atrocious. Some people do not think that homosexuals are fit for the role of a parent. According to Gary Glenn, Direct consequences of homosexual behavior experience dramatically higher risks of domestic violence, mental illness, and substance abuse, thus putting children in danger. However, many studies have shown that this is not the case. An individual s sexual orientation does not affect the risk of getting the behaviors listed above. Any person is susceptible to having a disorder. Glenn also vocalizes that Children of homosexuals are more at risk for anxiety, depression, OCD, and bipolar disorder. This is a very dramatic statement, again considering anyone could have one of those disorders, regardless of their parents sexual orientation. Alternatively, studies have shown that homosexual people make for quality parents. For example, Sabrina Tavernise suggests that homosexual parents are actually more affluent and educated than heterosexual parents. Those attributes are very helpful, especially when raising children. The benefits of homosexual adoption far outweigh the negatives in this circumstance. Children of homosexual parents are prone to be more happy than those of heterosexual parents. There are numerous positive impacts for the children. Various studies have been done to show the impacts. Of 77 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For me, I think that the fourteenth amendment should be revised to redefine the immigration status. Birth tourism should not be a way of immigration. I think that parents must first become citizens, then their children can count as citizens. Otherwise these parents will use their children s citizenship to stay in the United States to obtain benefits. This is not good, which is parents are use their children to obtain citizenship. 4 I think American citizenship should be harder to get. • 6. Television Shows A Influence On Children TV shows represent a great influence in children because they learn how to behave by imitating what they watch on TV. By watching TV, children get the idea of how gender roles are structured in society, and they think that is the proper way to classify men and women. Since a young age, children create their own perspective about gender roles and they grow up following the same example they learned when they were little. TV shows are a media that society uses to teach people the differences on gender roles and to keep the traditional point of view that society has been creating through the time; TV shows plays an important tool in the construction of gender. Women and men have always been portrayed in society in a different way; generally, men are considered to be better than women. Women are expected to have roles that are according to the common stereotypes that have been established in society; women s proper place is at home to take care of the family. The Simpsonsdeals with common stereotypes about nuclear family and women roles which have always been present in American culture; the show represents and challenges the ideologies about gender roles and patriarchy because sometimes, the show is contradictory since it represents women as the typical housewife, and other times, women are represented as taking a new role because they begin to work outside of the house. Although The Simpsons portrays ideologies of the modern nuclear family and gender roles, it still ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The Outline Of Attachment Theory By Mary Ainsworth Within the outline of attachment theory, Mary Ainsworth was the first to provide a detailed description of maternal sensitivity. Maternal sensitivity is a mother s ability to perceive and understand the meaning behind her infant s behavioral signals, and to respond to them quickly and appropriately. In study with 73 mothers and their second born child, stability and main level differences between measures of maternal sensitivity across settings and over time were studied. Maternal sensitivity was considered at three and six months during bathing, free play on mother s lap and the starting point and gathering episode of the Still Face Paradigm. Harsh discipline was predicted by maternal sensitivity at three months, which was fully mediated by maternal sensitivity at six months. The widespread attention for sensitive parenting behavior is certainly not without ground, since many studies have shown major relationships between maternal sensitivity and a variety of positive outcomes such as secure attachment, self regulation, social functioning, and cognitive competence. What started with Ainsworth s elaborate full day observation developed into more well organized methods used across a variety of settings ranging from natural daily routines to play and stress encouraging patterns. In the current study they aim to investigate maternal sensitivity in infancy in different situations in terms of mean level differences, interrelations, three month stability, and the ... The question is: will current ministry policies on planning cities suffice to keep the current standards of living if the growth in population continues with the same rate? Detailed analysis of the past profile of population growth is needed to answer this question. However, because of the rapid rate of population growth, ministry needs to change policies and set new plans to address housing, transportation and environmental problems. This means that the population of inner suburbs has increased from 1961 to 2001. If we look closer to the data, we can notice that East York and North York population has grown with faster rate than other inner suburb municipalities. Graph2. Inner Suburbs Population Change from 1961 to 2001 As you can see from Graph 2, Scarborough has the fastest rate of growth from 1961 to 1981; however, its population drops by 26.99 % from 1981 to 1991. Mothers try to maintain order within a household while encouraging creativity and idealism. In the play A Raisin In The Sun, Mother understands that her children need to form and strengthen their beliefs as they come to realize their personal aspirations. She is the head of the family around whom the conflicts arise and are resolved. After the death of her husband, Mother struggles to keep her family together by providing the support and guidance they need, and encouraging them to use good judgment and think of the family as a whole before making their decisions. As the family faces various obstacles, each seemingly more severe than the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For these reasons, Mother bought the family a new house and put it in the name of Walter s son, Travis. In other words, she made an investment in Walter s future and his family. Mother saw the family falling apart and that their feelings of resentment for one another, and general discouragement in their lives, was an effect from living like sardines in their tiny dreary apartment. Walter, however, did not see it this way and felt nobody would listen to what he wanted. He wanted the same thing as his mother, to make an investment in his and his family s future, but he had his own idea of how to do it. As he tries to explain to his mother, Sometimes I can see the future stretched out in front of me just plain as day. However, Mother knows an investment in a liquor shop is riskier than an investment in a house in the middle of a white neighborhood but is unable to convince Walter of it. My recommendation is based upon my assessment of four things: * Our position after the Mississippi case settlement * Our financial situation * Our business model * SWOT and Industry Analysis First, the Mississippi case has somewhat damaged our company s image and may portray us as a company that does not honor legal agreements. Not only was a contract broken that brought the case originally, but so was the settlement as a number of the subject to provisions were not met. If this be the case, then it could stand to reason that we may be viewed as untrustworthy in other agreements. Being that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These financial issues lead me to my next point; our business model and its effect on our financial situation. While our model of leaving as much individuality of our acquisitions in place as possible; allowing previous business arrangements, staffing levels and management to continue has been effective in building our reputation, efficiency has suffered. By not standardizing things such as automobile fleet usage and sharing facilities, we are incurring more administrative expense than is really necessary. By not centralizing purchasing across the board the company is not taking full advantage of economies of scale. As growth continues the administration of costs and the different contracts will become nightmarish. Expenses as % of total revenue are beginning to move up and currently stand at their highest level (18%). A move away from this model, especially after the image issues I mentioned earlier, may further damage our reputation as being the preferred acquirer. To further complicate such a move is our acquisition of numerous rural homes which will present a problem to the logistics of integrating services, etc. efficiently. Finally, SWOT and Five Forces analysis point to an increasingly competitive industry that will be experiencing substantial profit margin pressure as buyers gather more power due ... • 15. Puritans And The American Ethos And Democratic Spirit Puritans founded America, and for roughly two centuries, defined American culture. Their zealousness has created cultural backlashes to many progressive movements, but also organized community picnics, sent aid to impoverished populations (albeit with perverse logic), and comforted millions of Americans, both now and in the past, facing an uncertain world. Tocqueville unequivocally professed the proverbial glue Puritanism has on the American ethos and democratic spirit: Puritanism was not merely a religious doctrine, but it corresponded in many points with the most absolute democratic and republican theories. But American religiosity is diminishing. Other forces like materialism, globalism, humanism, and science continue to push the world into a new frontier. Between 2007 and 2014, adults who are religiously affiliated dropped 6%; though, 77% percent of Americans are religiously affiliated and 58% find religion very important and those who identify strongly with religion continue to have the same intensity in belief. With the election of Donald Trump, many see the dark side of this puritan spirit rising, the parts entangled with our country s deepest, darkest roots: more racism, sexism, and jingoism. The Stigma Of Receiving Therapy For Mental Illness One of the most difficult aspects of treating patients who suffer from trichotillomania (TTM), commonly called hair pulling disorder, is that most prefer to remain invisible. They are creative at finding ways to hide their illness. Most cover up with head scarves, hats, hoodies, and carry on as if nothing is wrong.Treatment for TTM is accessible through the NHS, yet the stigma of receiving therapy for mental illness is still strong enough to keep many patients with TTM away from psychologists, even when they have suffered significant hair loss. The key to eliminating this stigma is education and transparency. In order to better understanding of this impulse disorder, it is important to look closely at the causes, symptoms, and behaviors. Once these are understood, working with a psychologist to plan effective treatment becomes as easy as walking into their practice. Here are the basics about trichotillomania, and how a psychologist can help with finding the right treatment. What is Trichotillomania (TTM)? TTM is a psychological disorder identified as an impulse control disorder. Contrary to popular belief, TTM is not a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The two disorders can coexist due to their shared irresistible urges, though they are diagnosed separately and treated separately. TTM also bears a close resemblance to Compulsive Skin Picking, though this is also considered a separate disorder with different diagnosis and treatment options. Predominantly found ... Delaney A Taste Of Honey Essay Delaney s A Taste of Honey , a kitchen sink play, aimed to explore a variety of social issues present in 1950s Britain as it followed the lives of protagonist Jo and her mother, Helen. Though it is the struggles of the working class that prevail, the role and expectations of women are also widely explored with Delaney frequently reinforcing what appears to be an alternative view of women, as self reliant and often outspoken (unlike the norm of a passive housewife, for example). One of the main ways in which Delaney conveys unconventional views of women is through the character of Jo. To a 50s audience, the news of teenage pregnancy would be shocking enough but Jo s attitude towards motherhood would be seen as scandalous (albeit more anticipated by modern audiences). Jo s lack of maternal instinct is evident when she proclaims how she hate(s) babies , hate(s) milk and hate(s) motherhood. Delaney s use of powerful verb hate emphasises the strength of Jo s emotions, and demonstrates how every woman cannot fit into one ideal that society sets out but when a woman does stray from it, she is only to be faced with backlash. In fact, many Feminist audiences would argue that Jo is a brilliant example of what a woman should be and is in many ways better than her irresponsible mother. The juxtaposition between Jo s hatred of babies and Helen s love for them clearly represents Jo s more realistic, and in many ways mature nature Helen is clearly obnoxious to her own downfall and parenting abilities, clearly having no idea of what it takes to raise a child. • 22. Organ Systems And The Nervous System Essay The six main organ systems in the human body are the nervous system, cardiovascular system, endocrine system, digestive system, skeletal system and the reproductive system. Nervous System There are two parts to the nervous system which are: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord and some nerves, whereas the peripheral nervous system includes all the other nerves and it carries information to the central nervous system and also from it. The central nervous acts as the central control region of the human nervous system. The CNS processes information and issues commands around the body. The autonomic nervous system is the command network the CNS uses to maintain the body s homeostasis. It regulates heartbeat and controls muscle contractions in the walls of blood vessels, digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts. It also carries messages that help stimulate glands to secrete tears, mucus, and digestive enzymes. Central nervous system A response to a stimulus is coordinated by its central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain and the spinal cord. It gathers information about, and responds to, changes in the environment. Receptors detect a stimulus and send impulses along sensory neurons to the CNS. The CNS coordinates the information and sends impulses along motor neurons to the effectors, which bring about a response. The sequence of a response is: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Metaphors In The Grasshopper The Hangman (upon his Death bed) concerning his beheading his late Majesty, Charles the first, King of Great Britain; and his Protestation and Vow touching the same; the manner how he was terrified in Conscience (Brandon 1649). Literature such as this introduction to the confessional of King Charles executioner, John Miltons Lycidas, and Richard Lovelace s The Grasshopper prove that where there is social unrest, there will be writing that responds to it, and mid seventeenth century England had a lot of chaos to consider. War disagreements and corruption within England s church were key occasions that censored and shaped the work of Milton and Lovelace. Milton s repeated use of symbols, metaphors, and indirect allusions to the clergy in his poem speaks volumes about the political control and religious tensions in England. Lovelace s royalist themes, and careful juxtaposition of words and allusions in his poem convey the leisure and political opposition of the Cavalier men to the Puritans. The context and literary devices in both contribute to making them skillfully crafted cultural references indicative of the rising tensions during which they were composed. In Lycidas, John Milton pays careful attention to detail while he commemorates the death of Edward King, his old classmate, and discusses themes of pastoral life in his pastoral elegy. Why Does Catalase Decomposes Hydrogen Peroxide The purpose of this lab was to study some characteristics of enzyme action by investigating how the enzyme catalase decomposes hydrogen peroxide. It connects to our unit about enzymes because it illustrates how enzymes decompose their substrates and their rate of decomposition. In the graph of the more accurate experiment, it shows that the amount of product (in mL) gradually increased over time until at about 120 seconds. After that, it would just gradually begin to plateau meaning enzyme activity would no longer increase. Overall, both sets of data show that the amount of H2O2 decomposed gradually increased over time, and after a certain time, the number would stop climbing. The purpose of the potassium permanganate, or KMnO4, was to titrate the H2O2 in the solution, which we could then use to figure out how much of it was decomposed.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We could use the H2O4 because acids will interfere with hydrogen bonds and other IMFs in the enzyme which would denature it, permanently making the enzyme unable to work. The catalase was the enzyme that acted on the product, which was hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). And of course, the hydrogen peroxide, or H2O2, was the substrate and the catalase was the enzyme. Our results seemed to be consistent because once we added the necessary amount that was needed to determine the amount of H2O2 in the solution, the color of the solution afterwards would always be a light, clear brown, as opposed to having various colors and shades each time. This means that we added the correct, proportional amount of potassium permanganate each time. In comparison to the class data, less of our H2O2 was decomposed. Different sized drums and cymbals are arranged into kits, where a drummer can pick from a variety of sounds to lead or accompany a particular song. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that if you can count to four, you can play the drums. Counting till 4 will be the basis of the beat. Virtually all major rock beats are built around basic 4/4 time signature. It basically means that each measure or bar of music is split into four quarter notes. Then with the right hand the hi hat is hit on every count. The hi hats are the foundation of most basic rock drumming beats as they typically hold a steady pulse while other limbs fill in on the snare and the bass versions. The rest is actually quite simple. Then the bass and snare versions should be added on the counts of 1 and 3 respectively. The two most common rudiments are the single stroke roll and the double stroke roll. Since drumming is all about beats and counts, a drummer should be very precise in timing. • 28. Water Quality Of The North And South Forks Of Strawberry... Bioindicators of Strawberry Creek Edar Liu, Cindy Sandoval Espinoza, Ethan Schlatter, Weirui Xiao October 9, 2016 Biology 1B, Section 224, Group 1 Abstract: Through our research we aimed to determine if there were any differences in water quality of both the north and south forks of Strawberry Creek. As time progresses and the environment changes it is important to keep track of how certain species are being impacted by these features, and how they cope with change. We hypothesized that due to the lack of pollution, the south fork will promote a greater diversity of macroinvertebrates. This was due to the fact that there was less runoff and trash that could be introduced to the water in the south fork, than there was in the north fork. We gathered data by analyzing the different organisms living in both forks. We collected a total of fifty vials composed of five organisms from each fork, and inspected them under microscopic view. After gathering data and identifying the different kinds of organisms living in the different forks we assessed whether the organisms from the samples could live in high or low resolution water. We also took a t test to assess the probability of these differences being due to relevant factors or by chance. Our major findings suggest that organisms in the south fork showed a higher demand to living in cleaner water indicating that our hypothesis was correct. • 34. Exploring The Roots Of The Recurring Subjects And Symbols... After nearly two centuries completely lacking in images, early Christians finally developed a pictorial language to express their faith. The conventions developed early on would come to define the middle ages, an entire era of almost exclusively Christian images. Early Christians adopted classical conventions for their art, which would serve an opposing purpose for outsiders and initiates. For outsiders, the symbols meant no harm. But to followers of the faith, the images are loaded with meaning. The meaning inherent in the history of the symbol, when combined with a biblical context, creates a full and multi faceted iconographic tradition. The purpose of this paper is to explore the roots of the recurring subjects and symbols evident in the funerary paintings in Catacombs of Domitilla in Rome. Funerary paintings and sculpture provide the most thorough evidence of early Christian art. An exceptional visual tradition has been preserved in the vast network of underground burial systems: the Roman catacombs. One of the most extensive of these is the Catacomb of Domitilla. Beginning in the third century CE, the Catacombs of Domitilla housed thousands of bodies from families rich and poor, and extended for over seventeen kilometers in four distinct subterranean levels. In terms of style, most of the works are indistinguishable from Roman paintings. If anything, the art style is a more rushed and cramped version of illusionistic Roman wall painting. Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers and Assimilation of Jews An entire chapter of Eric Liu s memoir, The Accidental Asian, is founded on the supposition that Jews today serve as a metaphor for assimilation into American culture. According to Liu, this is due to the ease with which Jews have been able to assimilate. However, the progress that Jews have made in embracing and affecting America has been gradual rather than instantaneous, as evidenced by the character Sara Smolensky in Anzia Yezierska s novel Bread Givers. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sara s willing dedication to her American identity, as represented by her clothing, is contrasted with the blood relationship she has with her mother, and by extension her actions separate her from her entire ancestry and ethnicity. Denounced for her refusal to comply with the traditions of her culture, and disdainfully called an Americanerin, Sara experiences the social death that Sollors describes, a result of her cultural relationships having become mutually antagonistic (xx). In this scene she temporarily ceases to be Jewish and becomes to her people and to her family merely a female American. This schism is paralleled by a more subtle contrast at the conclusion of the same chapter that should be noted, when Sara hears the poverty stricken cries that Charity saves you from death (256)! This statement of course cannot be literally true, but displays a further contrast between the voluntary and the natural on a more literal level: voluntary generosity versus natural inevitable death. Sara is further distanced from her ethnicity through her resistance to the patriarchal doctrines of Judaism that are followed by her family. Sexually biased Judaism is represented by her father and his frequent citations of the Torah to justify such a position. • 38. Internal Conflict In Lord Of The Flies By William Golding An internal conflict is defined as a mental struggle arising from opposing demands or impulses. The struggle can be about the simplest of things, or it could even be about a more extensive and vexatious complication. In the book, the Lord of the Flies, author William Golding, wrote about a strange, but unique character named Simon. This character went through many tough experiences and conflicts between other characters, nature, and even himself. This is occured in Simon because man, is indeed, inherently evil and malicious. How the author structured this book was significant in a way that it strongly showed how Simon was behaving and acting. Golding used numerous examples of symbolism and sophisticated word choice to show that Simon s internal struggle was about either becoming evil or staying peaceful. The internal struggle within Simon was portrayed through Golding s substantial use of symbolism. In chapter eight, the author wrote about butterflies around Simon s spot and how they show an important characteristic of the island which the boys were stranded on. He wrote, Even the butterflies deserted the open space where the obscene thing grinned and dripped (Golding, 141). The butterflies around Simon s relaxation area symbolize peace and tranquility. Once, these butterflies left, his spot was now filled with a sense of darkness and evil. This is showing his struggle because now something positive around his only place of happiness is gone. It was overwhelming, yes, but it also made me realize how incredible New York City truly is not because of its theaters or skyscrapers or parks, but because of its people. I always say that cities have an urban heartbeat that send sparks through me, creating inspiration. But feeling alone in New York helped me to realize that the urban heartbeat I feel is made up of the people who create the city. Truly, no place better demonstrates this effect better than New York City. I know I will keep returning there because of this effect, as it inspires me more than I can ... • 47. Essay on Plagiarism According to the code of conduct at Clarion University plagiarism is the use of another s words without attribution and without enclosing the words in quotation marks. Plagiarism may also be defined as the act of taking the ideas or expressions of ideas of another person and representing them as one s own even if the original paper has been paraphrased or otherwise modified. ( Department of Nursing ) A lot of people, including myself have been confused of what plagiarism really means. Through my research I found that there are many different kinds of plagiarism and that a lot of people do it without even being aware they are. I have made the mistake of thinking that you could use another persons quote as long as it was cited,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Barnbaum) If there is a direct quote that would be useful then the quote needs taken directly with both quotes and citations, or when paraphrasing information it needs to be cited. If neither of these is done then it is plagiarizing. (C. Barnbaum) This form of plagiarism is what I think a lot of people do because they may agree with another person s thoughts and then want to make it in to their own so they will change a few words around to make it sound like their own words. The third type of plagiarism I have found is called Style Plagiarism. (C. Barnbaum) This plagiarism is said to be the most common trap that students fall into. (C. Barnbaum) Even if you aren t copying word for word but the same sentence or paragraph order is followed then this would be plagiarism because this is considered taking the authors reasoning style. (C. Barnbaum) Plagiarism does not always mean copying information but it can also be stealing the writing format as well. I think this can be considered a trap because people think it s not okay to steal information but taking the order, outline, flow, or style it is written in is different but really it is still a form of plagiarism. The next kind of plagiarism is called Metaphor plagiarism which is not always taking information word for word but using the same comparison or words to describe something. (C. Barnbaum) An original idea that someone else takes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 48. oka crisis Throughout history, the Native people of North America and the Europeans have continually had arguments and disputes over land. To this day there are still issues trying to be resolved. Twenty years ago, the beginning of one of the most violent and intense land disputes in present day Canada occurred. This event is now referred to as the Oka Crisis, named after the town Oka in Quebec. This crisis caused a confrontation involving the Quebec provincial police, the Canadian armed forces and the Mohawk people.1 The stand that the Mohawk people took in the town of Oka became a major revelation for the aboriginal people spreading awareness of aboriginal rights across Canada. This paper is divided into four sections. First, I will introduce... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Since the land claim by the Mohawks had been rejected a few years prior, there was no government objection to the development.13 In March of 1990, members of the Mohawk society set up a protest in Oka with great anger over the expansion of the golf course.14 The Mohawk were especially upset that the expansion would occur on top of an ancestral burial ground. In addition, it would occur on land they thought they had been granted in the 1700 s. Furthermore, this is the land that was disputed in the 1961 law suit. Some members of the Mohawk community built a barricade as a form of protest, preventing construction crews from entering what they believed was their land. The barricades were also set up along major highways as well as the Mercier Bridge.15 Tension was increased on July 11. The Quebec provincial government refused to negotiate with the Mohawks. The police were called in and it escalated into an armed conflict. Bullet exchanges were made and as a result, a Quebec officer was shot and later died.16 After hours of confrontation, canisters of tear gas were set off by the Quebec police. 17 As word of the altercation got out, Aboriginal people from across North America rallied to support the Mohawk. Later, the RCMP were called in but were still unable to contain the chaos. This led to the Canadian army being called in. During the crisis, three routes were blocked off in Oka throughout the seventy eight days of the crisis.18 This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 49. Lather And Nothing Else Symbolism Lather and Nothing Else, a story that takes place in South America around the time of the early 1900 s. The atmosphere that revolves around the story consists of suspense, worry, and tension; keeping the reader intrigued. By using first person point of view, the reader doesn t know the thoughts of the enemy (Torres). Yet the author s use of symbolism, irony, and first person point of view is very effective. It allows the reader to establish a deeper emotional connection to the scenario being put forth in front of them and increasing the level of tension throughout the story. The perspective of Lather and Nothing Else is in first person. The author s decision to write the piece in this perspective is very effective because it has the ability to show the in depth emotions, thoughts, and personality of the town barber. The reader can view the character in all directions, gaining empathy and sympathy for him. Also, it gives the reader great insight into the conflict of the story (the dilemma inside of the barber s head) and let us see all the things the barber must consider in order to make his decision of remaining a barber, or becoming a murderer.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most apparent example would be the razor the town barber possesses. The razor could have been the difference between life and death in terms of Torres life. The barber could have potentially taken the life of Torres with a single slice of the razor blade to his neck as his eyes were shut and wouldn t have seen it coming. ...With his eyes shut he would not even see the shine of the razor or the gleam in my eye. Also, the razor represents choices and freedoms. Torres is a murderer, executioner, terrorist, and the barber is curious as to if he could end the torture and pain he is putting his town through. The razor symbolizes the thin line between hero or murderer and life or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this lab is to study Infrared Spectroscopy, which focuses on the study of the electromagnetic spectrum. The area to be studied is the infrared region, which is made up of gamma, X, and UV rays. We want to be able to identify spectra s to their complementary structures. The background of this experiment particularly deals with the study of compound structure determination, and traits. We must be aware of the functional groups that occur in the compounds in order to correctly assess accurate results. Molecular vibrations affect the frequency of the stretch or bend, and the frequency of the bond is determined by 3 types of bonds between atoms. Infrared absorptions are ... It was very easy to make an error because of the high possibility that we had overlapping frequencies, or because two unknowns could be very similar. In order to avoid errors, it was necessary to make sure the frequencies were read very carefully and the spectra bonds were correctly identified. If we were to make an error in distinguishing an unknown, this would automatically cause us to have 2 or more incorrect Unknowns being identified. The Unknowns must be assessed by the frequency chart and bond identification. G. Experimental organic chemistry (Seymour, Raymond B.; Higgins, Jerry G.) William H.
