2. Maturing Is Hard In Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey
There comes a point in everyone s lives where they are compelled to grow up.
When an individual is young, it is advantageous to undergo new experiences and
meet wonderful people, but it is also possible to be taken advantage and make silly
mistakes. In the novel Northanger Abbey, Jane Austen accurately portrays how the
process of maturing is bittersweet. A brief synopsis of this novelis that the main
character, Catherine Morland, gets invited to accompany her neighbors in Bath and
meets the love of her life, Henry Tilney. These two characters face a few minor
obstacles along the way due to her adolescence but they end up getting married,
despite their differences in fortune. On her journey, the audience learns that Catherine
is highly inexperienced with society and her vivid imagination is often the reason that
predicaments occur, but she is supported and positively influenced by Henry and
Eleanor Tilney.
Throughout the novel, Northanger Abbey accurately portrays how the process of
maturing is bittersweet, especially when an individual like Catherine Morland is
highly inexperienced with society. She gets involved in similar circumstances to
modern day teenagers, including that Catherine is continually taken advantage of ...

3. Network Coverage Based On Cell Size Essay
Heterogeneous Network The operators are using better modulation schemes [1],
better coding rate, multi antenna technique for increased throughput and
efficiency. But this alone will not suffice as the resources are limited and there are
near far problems associated with a macro cell. One alternative to increasing the
throughput and quality of service is through cell split. To increase the capacity of
a cell, a large cell is divided into smaller cells with each cell having its own serving
base station and serving an area much less than that of a macro cell. A cell can split
into micro, Pico and Femto cells. A micro cell serves an area of less than 2kms
with the base station having a transmit power range of 5 watts. With further
reduction in the transmit power, a cell known as Pico cell can serve an area of 100
meters or less and is mostly used to provide coverage in buildings. A Femto cell
with transmission power of less than 200 Mw provides the least amount of
coverage. Fig. 1 Network coverage based on cell size Thus while Macro cell can
provide a wider coverage, in high density areas small cells can be used for data
offloading, both indoors and outdoors. This architecture shown in Fig. 1 results in
Heterogeneous Network. Thus Het nets have been introduced in the LTE Advanced
to provide increased throughput and capacity [5]. But there are some implementation
issues associated with Het Nets 1.2 Het Net Implementation
4. Essay On To Kill A Mockingbird Coming Of Age
In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Scout grows up in a small town where nothing
normally happens. When her dad is given a case to defend a black man, she gets
thrown into a world where racism has been the norm. She hasn t been exposed to
something like this, so she is confused, but she grows more mature in that time. She
and Jem both come of age in different ways in the story and get a taste of the real
world. Scout and Jem both show maturation throughout the book. Their father s
decision to defend a black man opens them up to the harsh world of racism and
prejudice, meanwhile he shows them how to be compassionate to people and not
to follow the norm. The reason To Kill A Mockingbird is a great coming of age
story is that it lifts Scout and Jem out of the racist society norms and asks them to
be more and model their father s behavior. Even though racism is a big problem of
our world today, it was a bigger problem when Jem and Scout were children.
Scout is considered an unknowing kid by many people until she models her father s

BENGUET HISTORY
Early in the 19th century after the Spanish explorer Guillermo Galvey s report of his
expedition, the Spanish government organized the mountain region into six
commandancias politico militar , namely: Benguet in 1846, Lepanto in 1852, Bontoc
in 1859, Amburayan in 1889, and Kayapa and Cabugaoan in 1891. The Province of
Benguet, as now constituted, has portions which were parts of the Districts of
Lepanto, Bontoc and Amburayan.
The early commandancias were divided into rancherias. The commandancia of
Benguet was divided into 41 rancherias, with La Trinidad as the capital. It was
named in honor of Don Galvey s wife Trinidad. The first Kapitan of Benguet was

The American established civil government in Benguet by 1900. On August 13,
1908, Benguet became a sub province of the Mountain Province together with
Amburayan, Apayao, Bontoc, Ifugao, Kalinga and Lepanto. During the 1930s,
mining companies began massive operations to work the gold mines in the area. This
attracted many lowlanders to work and settle in the area, especially in towns
surrounding the mines, including Itogon.
During World War II, Benguet was the site of fierce battles fought by Igorot
guerrillas and American forces to open up the western flank of the Japanese
defenders during the final days of liberation in 1945. By authority of the President
of the United States, the US Philippine Commission enacted Act No. 49 on
November 23, 1900, establishing a civil government for the Province of Benguet.
The officers of this government were a provincial governor, provincial secretary
and a provincial inspector. All these officers shall reside and have their offices in
the township of Baguio, which shall be the capital of the province. The governor
shall be the chief executive of the province. Until such time as a treasurer shall be
appointed for the province, the governor shall act as provincial treasurer, subject to
the provisions of the general law. He shall also make known to the people of his

6. Issues Over the Costs Of Textbooks
People have seen and despise the prices for used and brand new textbooks. There
are many websites, stores, and companies that sell textbooks at a biased price. The
books being sold are variety to depend on the dealer rather than optimizing to society
s opinion, costs must be decided depending on the quality of the textbook.
Stores and companies need to open choices looking at publicity views: when the
original price of a book costs $54.44, the used low quality price of the same book
would only be few dollars less than the actual text book, not even close to half of the
price of the original. With the aim of reselling books, online book buyers buy
textbooks and sometimes other types of books for a profit. Online book buyers
operate year round like online marketplaces to give students the opportunity to sell
their books even when campus buyback periods are not in effect. Students receive a
price quote or offer by simply entering the International Standard Book Number
(ISBN) number of the books they wish to sell. To allow students selling multiple
books to the same source, these online book buyers often offer free shipping; which
in actuality is built into the offer for the book. Nonetheless, prices are still based on
biased company and seller opinions.
Qualities for textbook are another reason for why prices should decrease in stores. At
any given point of time, a book value of equity per share (BVPS) is a good measure
of the value of a stockholder residual claim. BVPS

Ten Ways to Improve Your Interpersonal Skills
You are viewing page 1
Don t discount the importance of interpersonal skills in the workplace. How you are
perceived by your manager and co workers plays a large role in things as minor as
your day to day happiness at the office and as major as the future of your career.
No matter how hard you work or how many brilliant ideas you may have, if you
can t connect with the people who work around you, your professional life will
suffer. The good news is that there are several concrete things that you can do to
improve your social skills and become closer to your colleagues. All of these tools
will ultimately help you succeed in today s working world.

5 People together: Create an environment that encourages others to work together.
Treat everyone equally, and don t play favorites. Avoid talking about others behind
their backs. Follow up on other people s suggestions or requests. When you make a
statement or announcement, check to see that you have been understood. If folks see
you as someone solid and fair, they will grow to trust you.
6 Resolve conflicts: Take a step beyond simply bringing people together, and
become someone who resolves conflicts when they arise. Learn how to be an
effective mediator. If Co workers bicker over personal or professional
disagreements, arrange to sit down with both parties and help sort out their
differences. By taking on such a leadership role, you will garner respect and
admiration from those around you.
7 Communicate clearly: Pay close attention to both what you say and how you say it.
A clear and effective communicator avoids misunderstandings with co workers,
collegues, and associates. Verbal eloquence projects an image of intelligence and
maturity, no matter what your age. If you tend to blurt out anything that comes to
mind, people won t put much weight on your words or opinions.
8 Humour them: Don t be afraid to be funny or clever. Most people are drawn to a
person that can make them laugh. Use your sense of humour as an effective tool to
lower barriers and gain people s affection.

8. Afro-Futurism Analysis
Through a number of important essays, Marleen Barr s Afro Futurism opens up a
conversation about racial autonomy and collective agency in a literary space that
seems to have been reluctant to even whisper about such things: namely, Science
Fiction. Maybe that is not all that surprising given the genre s predominantly
white(ned?) literary categorization that, while it has no outright barred people of
color, has not in turn seemed to make any meaningful space for them, either .
Indeed, there is such an implicit racial claim of science fiction by White Culture
that when a person of color is cast in one of the starring roles of a major Science
Fiction production oh, let s say Star Wars: The Force Awakens that there is a
massive outcry and calls for boycott and existential fears of white erasure. Yet,
despite this struggle for ownership, the fit between Science Fiction and people of
color appears to be an intuitive one. Mark Dery ( Black to the Future ) poignantly
points out, effectively noting that African Americans are always already seen and
constructed as Other/Alien (8) . Is that all that surprising? Not... Show more content

(This will become a smooth transition into the next chapter which deals more
broadly with the reclaiming of forgotten histories.) This version of Afro futurism
steers Science Fiction in a direction it seemingly did not know it needed to go: a
science factionalist therianthrophy, or an anti Cartesian synthesis of mind and body
at the site of the exploited female body of color. Although the characters she
references use their abilities as means of escape, it s important to note here they are
embracing (as opposed to revert back to) animal shape shifting (in other words,
effectively curtailing the black woman as animalistic
9. What Caused The Russian Revolution
Without the Russian Revolution, a large part of the 20th century would be missing.
The Revolution had spawned the soviet union and the communist party, which
brought the world a new way of thinking about government, society and the
economy. But it also brought fear to capitalist nations. Around the beginning of the
20th century, Moscow and Petrograd experienced rises in the population. This was
due to many fleeing for the city, because of famine and overcharge in land.
Thousands were unemployed and the employed worked long hours for low pay,
with abusive bosses and dangerous working conditions. The others, who were
drafted to fight, weren t doing to well either. They lacked good leadership and only
one third of the soldiers carried weapons, while the other tried to find ones among
the dead bodies of the battlefield. This led to the Russians disapproving of the war,
and refugees fleeing to the cities, creating more overpopulation. (the Russian
Revolution) In 1915 the current ruler Tsar Nicholas II left to fight, believing he could

Nicholas II to step down, and the Provisional Government took over. But when
Lenin rose to power, he started a civil war between the Bolsheviks and the

In John Locke s State of Nature, it states that if there is a long line of misuses, then
they are justified to revolt (Locke). The Russians were in poverty and being
neglected by Tsar Nicholas II. they also had landowners overcharging them for land
and abusive bosses. Many didn t have jobs and were fleeing to the city, which led to

Whenever asked about these issues, Tsar Nicholas II would brush it off. This gave

There is a number of mental illness out there, most of them are quite interesting. Due
to Psychology are getting more and more popular, we could look for the information
about most of the mental illness very easily, there are lots of cases that you could
study, to have a better understanding of them. But there is one, that has always been
with uncertainty: Dissociative Identity Disorder a.k.a. DID. DID is a psychiatric
disorders that have a lot of controversy. Some of the people did not even believe that
is existing.
Dissociative identity disorder involves Two or more distinct identities in only one
human being, it s been called Multiple Personality Disorder previously. Most of the
view tend to believe DID is triggered by stress, and people who has a terrifying
childhood experience, is so much likely to have DID. Some clinicians believe
dissociative disorders under the umbrella of post traumatic stress disorder. That
means it is a Self defense Mechanism, a response to something tremendous harmful to
the person, and his brain somehow do not think the main identity is able to confront.

12. Why We Must Go Wrong
As the saying goes anything that can go wrong, will go wrong , yet being fully
aware of this, humans don t avoid doing things altogether, instead we intentionally
thrive toward finding that which can go wrong out of curiosity for knowledge and
fear that we might miss out on something if we don t. There is a lesson to be found
in every disappointment and negative outcome therefore, we gain experience, we
discover, and learn to live with things going wrong because that means we are one
step closer to it going right. We learn to live with these things by jotting down our
mistakes and others prior mistakes to help us prepare accordingly to future
situations. This is especially true in aviation. Without things going wrong, flying
would not hold the safest mode of transportation nor would it be as advanced, as
there would be nothing to aid us in how to prepare for the next flight otherwise. We
ve spent the last years in aviation focusing on increasing safety by trying to perfect
aircraft to only learn, as Wilbur Wright stated, ...the safety of the operator is more
important than any other point. Greater prudence is needed rather than greater skill.
This meaning that it isn t the technology or the aircrews individual capabilities; it is
the lack of caution and preparation instilled into the aircrew. Information gathered
from flight data recorders, FDRs, and cockpit voice recorders, CVRs, revealed new
insights on aircraft accidents. The result of several accidents was
13. Examples Of Anti Miscegenation Laws
Assignment: Statutes
Dr. Jessie Lee
PAD 525 Constitutional and Admin Law
Keisha S Fox
July 27, 2017
In this application, I will research and analyze Anti Miscegenation Statutes within the
United States and evaluate two cases that are associated with them. Miscegenation is
the method of mixing varionus races, whether they are mixed by marriage,
procreation, or even sexual intercourse. (Martin) Anti Miscegenation laws embraced
racial segregation because it was a crime for different races of people to get
married. These laws were initiated in the late 17th century and continued until
1967. All of the anti miscegenation laws in the United States barred marriages that
consisted of individuals who were white and those who were considered non
white. So a white male and black woman could not have been married or even in a
relationship without it being a crime back then. Some examples of miscegenation
laws was when Oklahoma in 1908 had a law on books that barred marriages
between Africans and non Africans, 1920, Louisiana barred marriages between
blacks and Native Americans, and in 1935, Maryland prohibited the marriages
between Filipinos and blacks. (Pascoe, 2009) Two cases that are relevant to
miscegenation are Loving v. Virginiaand Perez v. Sharp.
Loving v. Virginia
Facts of the case: this was a landmark civil rights case that overturned laws that
prohibited interracial marriage. The case involved a black woman named Mildred
Loving and a white man Richard Loving, who was sentenced to prison in the state
of Virginia for getting married. It was a crime because the marriage of the two was a
violation of the state s anti miscegenation law, which was called the Racial Integrity
Act of 1924. The couple got married in Washington, DC and upon their return they
were indicted for unlawful cohabitation and placed in jail. Mildred Loving wrote a
letter to the Attorney General; who was Robert F. Kennedy for assistance and in
return she was referred to the ACLU who represented the couple in the case. The
Supreme Court governed that Virginia s bans on interracial marriages were
considered unconstitutional. The court found that the anti miscegenation laws did
not infringe on the Equal Protection Clause

Brianna Vinup Ancient India and China
The ancient civilizations of India and China were possibly the most advanced of their
time. Both countries had much to offer in that time including new technology,
governments, religions, and items to trade. The two countries have and had had
many similarities and contrasts.
The geography of ancient India was a little different than what is to this day. The
Himalayan mountains are located in the Northern part of India and the Hindu Kush
are located in the North West. Three bodies of water surround southern India, the
Arabian sea is to the south west, the Indian ocean on the southern side, and The Bay
of Bengal to the southeast. India was extended more to the Northwest and west, in
ancient times. Jungles, forests, and mountains are great examples of the geography of
India. The Himalayan mountains still lay to the north. The Himalayan mountains
were great to the development of India s early civilizations. They provided a great
deal of protection from military invasions. In the east and west other mountains also
provided the same protection. Ancient India had some of the most extreme climatic
and geographical features.
China is located on the the continent of Asia. The civilizations began to form around
the Yellow River in 2000 BCE. China s culture is still the same but three other
civilizations have gone away or been taken over. The southern region of ancient
China was wet and tropical, the

Key Point 2
The second initiative will be to help the agri food sector adopt low carbon
technologies through the reduction of emissions and retrofitting agricultural
facilities. Both of these together will address expanding technologies and practices to
reduce emissions and to support the transition to low carbon, indoor agricultural
facilities.

Key Point 1
Ontario is looking to partner with First Nation communities to ensure a transition to
non fossil fuel energy that will minimize the impact on the communities. This can
potentially be done through investments in energy efficiency, micro grids and
renewable energy. Remote communities will be connected to the provincial
electricity grid through the partnership of the federal government and First Nations.
Renewable energy such as biomass, solar and waterpower will be the focus of the
projects. A fund will be established for community level greenhouse gaspollution
reduction projects and for community energy and climate action planning. Jobs will
be established among post secondary institutions that are low carbon along with

How Buddhism Influenced Chinese Culture
As one of the four great ancient civilizations, China has a very long history and a
gorgeous culture. We can not ignore the fact that not only religions and cultures are
inseparable, but also can influence each other profoundly, Just like Buddhism and
Chinese culture. The Chinese traditional culture includes three systems of thought:
Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. The first two are Chinese culture, and
Buddhism is a foreign religion from India. For over 2,000 years, Buddhism has
interacted with all levels of Chinese culture such as literature, philosophy, morality,
arts, architecture and religions. As a result, Buddhism has successfully integrated into
the traditional Chinese culture and has become one of the three pillars. (Xing, 308)

The storyline of Socrates the unexamined life is not worth living has played out a
historically with the controversy of evolution and the belief in God. Most people
who believe in God believe think he put everything on Earth and not the theory of
Evolution that things evolved over time. Socrates was accused of his findings that
he did not believe in God because he challenged the work of God. The unexamined
life is not worth living because if we live life the way other people want us to live
and go by their beliefs the world would be boring and too uniformed. I think that a
different view about everything is very important because we learn to agree and
disagree whereas back in Socratestime people were exiled for speaking out on things

That project is the plant expansion in Germany. The reason is because this project is
necessary for the eastward market expansion, so their financials had to be considered

four plants, but it is mandatory since it is a regulatory requirement. The other two

you make a choice to assert your legal rights in the aftermath of an accident or an

Defining a Personal Injury Case
Personal injury cases are legal disputes that arise when one person suffers harm from
an accident or injury, and someone else might be legally responsible for that harm. A
personal injury case can become formalized through civil court proceedings that seek
to find others legally at fault through a court judgment or, as is much more common,

An Informal Settlement
Realistically, the majority of disputes over who s at fault for an injury or accident are
resolved via some type of early, informal settlement. Typically, these informal
settlements are achieved among the parties who are involved personally in the
applicable dispute, their insurance companies, and the lawyers that representing each
side. A settlement usually stems from negotiations, followed by an agreement in
written form, which shows that each side agrees not to proceed with any further legal
action, such as a lawsuit, by opting to alternatively resolve the matter by payment of
an agreeable financial sum.
Mediation Arbitration
The middle ground that bridges an informal settlement and a lawsuit are alternative
resolution procedures, such as mediation and arbitration
20. George Vs Orwell
In 1784, exactly two hundred years before George Orwell s 1984., German
philosopher Immanuel Kant wrote: Have courage to use your own reason! , which
would become the motto of the Enlightenment era, marking the turning point in
history, freedom from the traditional or divine authority. In 1932, twelve years
before Orwell, English writer Aldous Huxley described a society conditioned by
advanced technology. A society too passive to think at all, let alone think freely. In
his futuristic novel, Orwell gave a powerful portrayal of dictatorship. A society in
which only Big Brother, as the leader, is allowed to think, to think for everyone else.

They work all day long for things they believe they need. Mortgages, loans,
material goods and profit; profit above all. Huxley feared there would be no reason
to ban a book, for no one would even want to read. Huxley was right, reading is out
of fashion and our world is shallow. Communication is reduced to mobile phones
and social networks, we use forums, chat rooms, dating apps, and spend far more
time with machines than with people. Realdoll, a firm in the U.S., manufactures
anatomically correct rubber dolls for sexual pleasure, for 10 000 dollars each, then
satisfied customers give interviews showing off their perfect girlfriends . Machines
run our world, making us alienated and redundant. Both Orwell and Huxley were
spot on in their prophetic novels. Orwell described the dystopian world of
dictatorship still existing, where Huxley s Utopian view described the the first
world technocracies. Whereas in the former people are forbidden to think for
themselves, in the latter they are conditioned to think they are free. In Huxley s

The Scale of Values in Alexander Pope s Poem The Rape of the Lock
I found Alexander Pope s The Rape of the Lock a delightful, amusing poem.
Throughout the poem, trivialities are compared with events and objects or
consequence and the insignificant is treated with utmost importance. Its very title
gives the reader an immediate clue; rape and all its connotations bring to mind a
heinous crime of physical and spiritual violation. Perhaps this description could
apply to the theft of a lock of hair, but only in a world where normal morals are
perverted. This skewed scale of values is shown repeatedly throughout the poem, and
supporting this alternate world are the sylphs. As the souls of former coquettes, the
sylphs exist solely to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, the word militia brings to mind an imposing, well regulated army, rather than a
gossamer grouping of sprites bent on protecting beauty and virginity.
It is sylph Ariel that foresees the dread event of the poem s title. Ariel says to
Belinda: Warned by the Sylph, O pious maid, beware! / This to disclose is all thy
guardian can: / Beware of all, but most beware of man! (1.109, 112 14). Man, of
course, is the coquette s eternal adversary. A lady must be very careful; men may be
allured and teased, but as prey they can be unpredictable.
Following this warning Belinda wakes and begins the transcendental toilet, one of
my favorite scenes in the poem. Pope elevates Belinda s morning preparations to the
level of High Mass; a mystical, spiritual experience in which miraculous
transformation takes place. In this ritual, however, cosmetic powers rather than
cosmic powers are relied upon. (1.124). With the aid of the sylphs, Belinda begins
her grooming:
And now, unveiled, the toilet stands displayed,
Each silver vase in mystic order laid.
First, robed in white, the nymph intent adores,
With head uncovered, the cosmetic powers.
A heavenly image in the glass appears;
To that she bends, to that her eyes she rears.
The inferior priestess, at her altar s side,
Trembling begins the sacred rites of Pride. (1.121 28)
Here we see an example of the utmost importance of the superficial in the absurd

EFFECT OF SOCIAL STRUCTURE ON ART
Art has been found everywhere in every historical period. We can define it as a tool
for human beings which is used to tell the ideas and thoughts of people, passing
people s emotions and feelings to other people and highlighting the wonderful
creatures that exist in nature. Moreover, people exert it to raise awareness of some
important events. People who are making art reflect all these things through their art

It can be easily seen that nearly all art works have a religious issue in them. There
are many examples which can be used for an evidence to religious effects on art.
People can observe huge impact just by observing some works in museums or

creations. For example, there exist Islamic art creations. These works can be seen in
many places like museums. Maki (2013) mentions that there are many religious

religious objects can be a proof for consideration of faithless things. (as cited in Paine,

Belonging or not belonging is the feeling of being included or excluded by a certain

To find a true sense of belonging within a set world, one must have the courage to
stay true to themselves. The protagonists in this film Scott and Fran gradually
challenge and redefine the order of this community. Scott the up and coming star of
the ballroom world becomes frustrated with only dancing the old traditional steps and
wants permission to introduce his own kind of steps.
In the illustrated story The Sneetches illustrated and written by Dr. Suess he
demonstrates individuals within a group desperately seeking approval of another
group they are made to believe are more elite.
Not belonging may not be a permanent state. Doug, Scott s father is portrayed as a
very quiet charter who rarely speaks. He is often seen in the dance studio
improvising his movements, which is similar to what Scott did earlier on in the
film. However he is often captured through a high angle shot and very limited
lighting making it appear as though the audience is secretly overlooking his
dancing which no one is meant to see. This image suggests that he too wants to
express his passion through dance, but he can only do it in the dark alone as if he
is too afraid of confronting those who oppose it. The darkness around Doug lets him
express himself as an individual and shed his previous conformed life. This is
clearly conveying the main idea, that it is very important to belong but only if an
individual can first belong to

there was a farmer in Nebraska, and he wanted to ship corn to a trading post in

in a special way. Most movies have the common background, and similar heroic

same common principles. There were many universal themes embedded in this movie
to help us connect more with the movie. Seger mentions in paragraph 13, many
times...the hero doesn t want to leave, and this is true. Simba, in The Lion King, did
not want to leave but he felt his father, Mufasa, death was because of him. Simba lost
himself and literally almost died from running away until he got help from some
unusual creatures. This is another point Seger mentions in paragraph 14, the hero
usually receives help, and the help often comes from unusual sources. Without the
help from Pumba and Timon, Simba realistically would have died whether from
starvation or depression. These creatures taught him, Hakuna Matata, which taught
Simba not to worry about things he could not fix. Thus, they helped him, in a way,

29. The Use Of Censorship On The Human Brain
Brainwashing refers to the techniques systematically used to alter a person s beliefs
by using some sort of pressure on the human brain. This technique can be shown in
the period right before the peak of the Cold War in the 1950s when the threat of
Communism was becoming ever so real. By the thousands, American citizens gained
an allegiance to Marxist ideologies and anti capitalist doctrines. This can be shown in
Communist government s use of censorship of material to brainwash its people,
especially subjects pertaining to capitalism. First used in the 1950s during the Korean
War, brainwashing was used to describe the methods on how Chinese Communists
influenced the actions of their prisoners. This can best be explained by... Show more

The interrogator would then lightly question the prisoner, who would be unwittingly
collaborating with the Chinese, to make a list of some problems with America. This
type of foreign coercive persuasion used by the Chinese Communist party became
more and more outright through the prisoners stay at the re education camps. The
physical impacts of Chinese brainwashing were minimal, as the only intention of the
Chinese was to convert as many people as possible to the Communist orthodoxy. The
concept of brainwashing was key as esteemed psychologist Edward Hunter stated that
The United States of America is the main battlefield...and the people and the soil and
the resources of the United States (Weiner 1). In this quote, he warned the American
people not to be influenced by the upcoming threat of Communist manipulation. His
primary reason for making this statement was his first hand experience regarding Mao
Zedong s China. The Korean conflict brought no end to American paranoia as many
free American citizens had been arrested and accused of being enemies of the state in
Communist China. Many of these convicted Americans then went through a series of
rigorous interrogations intended to guilt trip the person into thinking that he/she was
the aggressor to the victims in China or North Korea. Furthermore,

We think important objects and events in our world will automatically grab our
attention, but they often don t, particularly when our attention is focused on
something else. Cocktail Party Effect describes the ability to focus your hearing on
one specific thing even though noise is all around you. It is named such because this
occurs when you are at a party you can focus on the conversation you are having with
the person close to you and can ignore all the other noise and conversation going on
around you. Your brain helps you selectively focus on the person you are talking too
and mutes the other conversation, music, and general noise around you. Whereas, the
failure to notice unexpected objects or events when attentionis focused elsewhere is
now known as inattentional blindness. The interface between attention and
consciousness are examples of the Cocktail party and Inattentional blindness.
Per the website, Psychology.wikia, the cocktail party effectis an example of selective

The Crippling Bodies Bodies, corpses, and graves are all symbols of illness and
death in literature. Joseph Conrad s Heart of Darkness and Natasha Trethewey s
Native Guard include bodies to represent a lacking of vitality for humanity. In Heart
of Darkness, Joseph Conrad uses bodies to symbolize the inferiority of those that are
believed to be lower class. Conrad demonstrates how imperialism affects the bodies
of the inferior natives in CongoAfrica. Trethewey uses Native Guard to describe her
mother s tragic death that is caused by abuse. Both Conrad and Trethewey relate
bodies to the mistreatment of inferior figures by uncivilized, powerful forces. Conrad
s Heart of Darknessillustrates how the power from the imperialism that the
Europeans have causes them to treat the native people of Congo Africa as slaves
and as bodies that are meant for work. Conrad expresses the horrors of the
Europeans toward the natives of Congo through the state of the natives bodies.
Conrad describes the Congo as though it is a graveyard for all of the natives that
are being treated as slaves by the Europeans. The natives in the setting are
characterized as living inferior to the Europeans that come to conquer the land. In
Envisioning Africa: Racism and Imperialism in Conrad s Heart of Darkness, Peter
Firchow examines Heart of Darkness and the allegations of racism against the
novel. In response to Heart of Darkness, Firchow states how Conrad s own
experiences to Africa may play a role in his perception of the Congo and Africa in
general. Firchow focuses on how Conrad draws racism into Heart of Darkness by
exploring misrepresentations of Africa and Africans . The misrepresentations of
Africans include how the natives are assumed to be weak and poor although their
type of civilization is the opposite of the Europeans and of Conrad s. The poor state
the Africans are assumed by the Europeans to be a call for help. Misrepresentations
of Africa are further described as being an opportunity to explore one s hidden, dark
inner self. The poor state that Africans live in can easily be overruled by stronger
forces such as European countries. Imperialism places a strong suit in the overruling

THE ANSWER
No political revolution is possible without a radical shift in one s notion of the
possible and the real.
Judith Butler, Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity
Judith Butler argues that gender becomes ВґrealВґ by a person unconsciously acting
in ways that are accepted to be masculine or feminine and that even biological sex is
a product of culture.
Gender is imposed through patterns of thought in the society, but history shows that
identities have changed over time, then it is impossible to say that they are fixed and
eternal.
Gender Trouble is an original and radical text that employs for political ends the
analytical methods of poststructuralist theory (and its challenge to categories and
ideas of objective truth).
IDEAS
Because there is neither an essence that gender expresses or externalizes nor an
objective ideal to which gender aspires, and because gender is not a fact, the various
acts of gender create the idea of gender, and without those acts, there would be no

Hospitality
Hospitality is a key role shown throughout The Odyssey. It is an essential part to the
poem. During the poem, Homer shows how people treated one another. Each island
that Odysseus visit there is a different component of hospitality. What a great host
would do is welcome their guest, feed them proper food, treat respectfully, let guest
leave, don t question identity, and finally give them a gift. In this essay I will be
talking about how hospitality is important in The Odyssey and how it hospitality
differs between places. In the poem, we see all examples of how people in Ancient
Greece showing hospitality. Some may treat their guest in a terrible way while
others would go the extra mile for their guest. Hospitality characterizes people and
places. Odyssey s voyages shows many examples of how he was treated. It states,
Any crewman who ate the lotus, the honey sweet fruit, lost all desire to send a
message back... (9.106 107). Odysseus arrives and the Lotus eaters who are
practically drug abusers. The lotus eaters have this fruit which they eat and if you
eat it you get hooked on to it. It s like a heroin addict, they always will comeback to
use more. The Lotus eaters, do not show good hospitality because they won t let
their guest leave. They get their guest to eat the sweet fruit and they won t leave.
Their guest would want to make it home but the lotus eaters change that by getting
them to eat the plant and then they will stay. Homer clearly makes it clear that to be
a good host let guest leave when they want to.
Moreover, Odyssey has seen exquisite hospitality. Homers, interpretation of
hospitality is very hard to perfect. However, a superb host Aeolus the ruler of
Aeolian shows many components of hostipitality. Aeolus was loved by the gods
because he made sacrifices to them often. Aeolus treated Odysseus well because he
could have been a god in disguise. Homer says, Their a splendid palace, and Aeolus
hosted me one entire month (10.16 17). Aeolus lives in a Utopia, he hosted
Odysseus for a month. Not only that but it states He gave me a sack, the skin of a
full grown ox, binding inside the

their apartments. This is very time consuming and tiresome.
Then, when they find that there is so much violence and
drugs in the street, that it is not safe to be out there anyway,
41. they usually end up staying in their apartments for most of
their free time.
The cultural differences between these people and others of
higher income communities is also a
reason why they may have problems. Racism is very
obvious to the people of the South Bronx, especially
when they go outside of their district. If a woman from this
area goes to a hospital outside of her
district, a hospital that is more than likely wealthier and
cleaner, she is usually turned away and told to go to a
hospital in her own district. Others, who are admitted into
these hospitals, are put on a special floor, mainly for the
lower income or Medicaid patients. (Amazing Grace, p.
176)
Another way the government discriminates against them is
how they are housed. Most of the
residents are living in government housing where the
government pays their rent. When the government
helped the people
42. Women’s Reproductive Rights Are In Danger Essay
The battle for women s reproductive rights is similar to the struggle for African
Americans to have the full liberty of speech in public and private as Dredd Scott
found out in 1865 when he petitioned for his personal freedom from slavery and lost.
Moreover women s reproductive rights are akin to defending the rights of racial
equality, civil rights, desegregation, same sex marriage, and universal human rights.
Every individual should have the right to choose how to live his or her private life in
today s society without governmental interference or control.
Abortion had been illegal since 1880 in the United States, unless it was crucial in
saving the woman s life. According to the Boston Women s Health Book Collective,

On one hand, the cost to have an abortion was extremely high during that tumultuous
time and most women could not afford it. So, Planned Parenthood was formed in
part to help alleviate the costs associated with abortions for low income, women of
color who needed the medical help. (feminist.com) This allowed these women in
crisis to afford to have these procedures done in a safe manner with the supplement
of Medicaid. But, many pro lifers object to the use of taxpayer money to provide
abortions to these individuals, even though white women during the 1970s and today
had more abortions than anyone else. (U.S. Statistical Abstract 2009)
During the 1995 United Nations World Conference on Women activist and Woman s
Movement leader, Bella Abzug, wrote in her Contract with Women of the USA
calling for among other things economic, social and political equality for women.
Other principals included affordable health care and reproductive rights; ending
discrimination against women and inclusion of women in the global peace making
process; protecting a health environment; more importantly, a long term plan to
achieve equality. (Contract with Women of the USA ) These founding principles are
the basis of the feminist movement s push to maintain Roe v. Wadeand keep if from
being reversed.
Unfortunately, the landmark Roe decision is perilously close to being overturned by
opponents and conservative Christian groups who want the states to limit women s
43. Gospel Of Luke Dbq Essay
The Gospel of Luke was also written around eighty CE, written somewhere outside of
Palestine (Tatum, 1999, p.34). The author may have been Luke the Gentile Christian,
writing to another Gentile, Theophilus. Like Matthew, Luke is strongly believed to
be written after Mark, with references from him, Q and L if following the Two (Four)
Document Hypothesis. The authors of Luke and Matthew are believed to be written
during the same time without the knowledge of knowing. As mentioned before, Luke
is about fifty percent longer than Mark is, making it important source since it
contains more information about the historic life of Jesus. There is also a second part
to Luke which is the book Acts, but is separate in Bible. Both include the beginnings

Cells Normal Human Bronchial Epithelial (NHBE) cells were obtained from
Lonza (Walkersville, MD) and were grown and maintained in bronchial epithelial
basal medium (BEGM, Lonza) supplemented with growth factors and hormones as
described in the manufacturer s instructions, at 37В°C in a humidified atmosphere
of 5% CO2 95% air. Cells were treated with 15d PGJ2 or Vehicle (Veh) in basal
medium for 24 h, nuclear extracts were prepared and protein concentrations were

Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay The ChIP assay was performed using
the SimpleChIP Enzymatic Chromatin Immunoprecipitation kit with magnetic beads
(Cell Signaling Technology) as described previously (1). An equal amount of
chromatin was incubated overnight at 4В°C with antibodies against PPARОґ, or
against IgG as control (Santa Cruz Biotechnology). Then protein G magnetic beads
were added and the chromatin was incubated for 2 h, at 4В°C with rotation. An
aliquot of chromatin that was not incubated with any antibody was used as the input
control sample. Antibody bound protein DNA complexes were eluted and subjected
to real time PCR (1) with specific primers that amplify the PPRE and ОІ Actin in the
promoter.
Western blotting Western blotting was performed as described previously (2).
Primary antibody against PPARОґ was from Cayman Chemical. The secondary
antibody IRDye 800CW (925 32211) and IRDye streptavidin (925 68079), IRDye

In Vitro Electrophilic Addition Reaction The ability of 15d PGJ2 to form covalent
electrophile protein adducts was investigated in vitro by performing an in vitro
electrophilic addition reaction. NHBE cell lysates, recombinant PPARОґ, and
PPARОґ ligand binding domain (PPARОґ LBD) proteins were incubated with

45. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Going To The Movie
Theatre
The lights begin to dim until you can barely see what is around you. The smell of
butter is in the air as you recline your seat back till you are nearly vertical with the
floor. Then a bright light shines in front of you, so massive it is impossible to miss.
It is finally starting. The movie is finally starting. There is a significant reason why
people occasionally go to the movie theatre to watch a movie rather than just watch
the movie at home. Going to the theatre means tons of popcorn, extra comfy seats, a
dark and loud room, and a giant screen. Going to the movies is a whole experience
in itself. Have you ever had a bad experience at the movie theatre though? One
where your shoes begin to squeak because you step in someone s spilt slushy or as
you sit in your chair you hear the crunch of the previous person s left over popcorn
underneath you. Not only does this situation make you frustrated and irritated, it
also distracts you from the movie you went to the theatre to see. If you have a bad
time at the movie theatre, you may not even remember the movie you went to see
because you are distracted by all the things around you. In this case, going to the
movie theatre actually takes away from the movie itself. Going to the movie theatre
should let you become totally engrossed in the movie and even enhance the movie
itself. When one goes to a movie theatre it needs to be clean. The floors should be
clean and dry not wet and sticky. The seats should be spotless with no sign
46. Effects Of Advertising Cause Low Self-Esteem
Advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and affects all of us
throughout our lives. We are each exposed to over 2,000 ads a day, constituting
perhaps the most powerful educational force in society. The average American will
spend one and one half years of his or her life watching television commercials. The
ads sell a great deal more than products. They sell images, makeup, skin and hair
care, diet pills, and cosmetic surgery as a means of normalcy.
In this paper, I will argue how the effects of advertisements on a person s identity can
cause low self esteem and lead to health issues. First, I will explain what a person s
identity means. A person s identity is who you are, the way you think about yourself,
the way you are viewed by the world and the characteristics that define you.
Media portrayals of women through advertising and characters who are then,
airbrushed and perfect, contribute to norms that reinforce this unattainable image of
beauty. According to Maggie Vlazny, a mental health professional, Self esteem is a
core identity issue, essential to personal validation and our ability to experience joy.
Once achieved, it comes from the inside out. But it is assaulted or stunted from the
outside in. A woman with low self esteem does not feel good about herself because
she has absorbed negative messages about women from the culture and/or
relationships.
Based on the images seen in advertising, women often feel they should be thin and
47. Compare And Contrast The Gettysburg Address And The
Second...
Two very influential speeches, The Gettysburg Address and The Second Inaugural
Address were both spoken by Abraham Lincoln. The time period of the speeches is
quite interesting, the first taking place before The Civil War and the second one,
after The Civil War. His word choice is elaborate and precis, which makes it quite
easy to analysis what he is trying to put forward in his speeches. Although some
may argue that Lincoln had other ideas in mind, it is quite evident that his vision of
America was heavily based around equality of all people. His underlined intentions,
the information he puts forward, and his words about religion are all strong
examples of his views on the situation of equality in America. This can be further
explained by analyzing the two speeches in question. Before anything else, it is very
important to analyze the intentions behind his speeches. This will give insight into
what exactly Lincoln s vision of America was and how he strives to obtain that. The
Gettysburg Address speaks mostly of equality of all men and what that means during
The Civil War. On the other hand, The Second Inaugural Address addresses his
thoughts after America has been through over four years of fighting in The Civil
War. These thoughts include the conflicting views about war on either side and the
mention of slavery as well. With all this being said, both speeches seem to hold the
same intention. Lincoln mentions slavery and equality in both excerpts and his
thought seem not
48. Cabana Boys Concert Report
On November 18, I attended the Cabana Boys concert presented by the Music
Department at Fullerton College. The band itself was made up of Fullerton College
students, and the concert was directed by Dr.Gregory Woll. Generally speaking, The
Cabana Boys are a high energy group performing contemporary musicincluding latin,
rock, fusion and pop (department). The band consisted of these eight members and
instruments: Jonny White, Trumpet; Jack Sneddon, Trombone; Oscar Soriano, Sax;
Blake Rambo, Bass; Gabe Barraza, Guitar; Nico Vasquez, Drum set; Juan Garcia,
Percussion and Gio Thomson, vocalist.
On the whole, this concert was a new but pleasant experience for me, because it
was my first time attending a school jazz concert. For the most part, there was
consonance in all of the songs played by this band along with a slow, mellow
tempo. The tunes and melodies were repetitive as well as groovy. Notably, the genre
of the majority of the songs was Jazz, and they were mainly songs by Gordon
Goodwin. I thought it was very unique how most of ... Show more content on

Personally, I enjoyed this performance since the song played was a cover from my
favorite band, The Doors. In my opinion, this cover was excellent because the
vocals and instruments were syncopated and merged perfectly together. While this
song played, the background stage lights manifested a psychedelic mood by
spirling in different colors. The Doors was a Psychedelic/Acid Rock band from the
late 1960 s, and therefore it made sense to use those colorful lights to create that
surreal, trippy mood. The beginning of the song starts off by saying, Before you
slept into unconsciousness, I d like to have another kiss./Another flashing chance at
bliss/Another kiss, another kiss. The Cabana Boys were able to represent the LSD
part of the acid rock era with the use of this song; since the lyrics are both poetic and
