Commercialization of Wikis

In 2015, the right combination of factors came together for us to build a Lightboard at Vancouver Island University based on the open hardware specification originally designed at Northwestern University.
The Lightboard provides a familiar whiteboard like environment for faculty to use while creating educational videos. Aside from the novelty, what makes the Lightboard a useful tool and what does it really take to build one?
We’ll share our Centre's history with supporting educational video and explain why and how we built our Lightboard. We'll show you pictures, examples we created with the lightboard and some pedagogically appropriate integrations into teaching and learning experiences.

Wikis are a very versatile and easy-to-use tool that is finding increasing applications in teaching and learning. Wikis are largely used in education for both teaching and learning. Wikis can be used in the classroom to support many learning approaches. Learning approaches that could most be supported by wikis are collaborative learning and the constructivist learning paradigms. A wiki is a web page that can be viewed and modified by anybody with a web browser and access to the internet. This means that any visitor to the wiki can change its content if they desire. While the potential for mischief exists, wikis can be surprisingly robust, open-ended, collaborative group sites. This paper deals about the characteristics of wiki, wiki as a learning tool and uses of wiki in education. This paper also explains the concept of STOLEN principles for using wiki in higher education.

Northern Illinois University developed competency-based self-paced online workshops to introduce faculty to online teaching technologies as part of their online faculty certification process. The workshops allow faculty to learn about online teaching at their own pace through online modules that cover identified technology competencies. The self-paced model makes the training scalable and flexible and accommodates faculty with different experience levels and availability. The workshops are designed to be mobile-optimized and publicly available without logins so faculty can access just-in-time learning resources.

Northern Illinois University transitioned from using the Wimba synchronous collaboration tool to Blackboard Collaborate. They conducted a pilot with 50 faculty/staff users of Wimba and found that Blackboard Collaborate had additional features. NIU provided training to faculty support staff on Blackboard Collaborate and allowed all courses on their Blackboard system to use the tool. The transition process included testing the integration with Blackboard, creating documentation, and conducting a survey of faculty Wimba users to understand what features they found most useful and important.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Editor's Notes
- The word Wiki comes from the hawaiian term “wiki-wiki” which can be translated as very quick. Honolulu International Airport is the home of the Wiki-Wiki Express, seen in this picture. Until recently, most passengers took this bus service to get between gate areas. However, the service may no longer be the fastest way as many passengers are now choosing their feet instead of the bus and traveling through an air conditioned walkway.
- You’ll see an old style wiki, where students in the class would collaborate by possibly having different color chalk and writing their ideas on a board. Wiki is a visual version of the same type of collaboration and document creation but by using an electronic tool on the Internet. A wiki is simply a collaborative website where all participants have equal ability to make changes to content. A good wiki is easy to use, so participants can be productive right away. An important feature of a wiki is a history of who has done what work in the wiki. Another important feature is the ability to be able to revert back to any previous versions of a wiki in order to correct a mistake or maybe go in a different direction.
- Of course one of the most well-known wikis may be Wikipedia. Although it gets a deservedly bad wrap as a primary source for writing a paper, many educators encourage their students to start with Wikipedia when researching a topic. It can be a good place to find keywords for searching and links to more credible sources.
