Conversational analysis is an approach to studying everyday conversation that focuses on how interchanges are constructed interactively and pragmatically between participants. It originated from ethnomethodology and analyzes conversations by describing how participants themselves understand and treat exchanges. The method examines utterances as actions or "speech acts" that can be grouped into families like commissives to commit to action, directives to get others to act, assertives to display beliefs, and expressives to convey psychological states. Declarations are a special type of speech act done by authorized speakers.
