Continental drift was a theory proposed by Alfred Wegener in the early 20th Century that proposed continents were once joined together in a supercontinent called Pangaea before drifting apart. There were three main pieces of evidence for this theory: the continents fit together geometrically, identical fossils are found on separated continents, and similar animal species have been discovered on different continents. The continents moved due to tectonic plates in the earth's surface shifting due to heat in the earth's core.
