Continental Drift Theory Template

 1. 1. Continental Drift Theory Megan Steward
 2. 2. Aflred Wegener

Born- November 1, 1880

Died- November 2, 1930 at age 50

Noted for the continental drift theory

1905- earned his Ph. D in astronomy

He died after being a heavy smoker of heart failure

He was a record holding balloonist after holding the balloon in the air after 52 hours

 3. 3. Continental Drift Theory

The continental Drift Theory is that the continents slowly moved over Earth’s surface

 4. 4. Continental Drift Theory Evidence

Evidence from Landforms-a mountain range in Africa matches up with a mountain range in Argentina

Evidence from Fossils- In Africa and Argentina there were fossils found that were identical

Evidence from Climate- on the island of Spitsbergen there was a fossil of a tropical plant when Spitsbergen is in the Arctic Ocean. This means that the island must have been once near the equator

 5. 5. Harry Hess

Born- May 26, 1906 in NYC

Died- August 25, 1969

One of the founding fathers of the theory of plate tectonics

Best known for sea floor spreading

Entered Yale University

 6. 6. Sea Floor Spreading

The process that continually adds new material to the ocean floor.

 7. 7. Sea Floor Spreading Evidence

Evidence from Molten Material- Scientists found older rocks farther away from the mid-ocean range and newer rock by the mid-ocean range

Evidence from Magnetic Stripes- the rock has bits of iron in it and as the rock harden the magnetic iron is locked into place. As the iron bits on both sides of the mid-ocean range harden at the same time they have the same magnetic memory.

Evidence from Drilling Samples- scientists drilled holes in the ocean floor and they brought up rocks in the pipes. They found out that the father away they were from the mid-ocean range the older the rocks were

 8. 8. Other Definitions

Subduction- the process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep-ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary

Mid-Ocean Ridge-the undersea mountain chain where new ocean floor is produces; a divergent plate boundary

Sonar-A device that determines the distance of am object under water by recording echoes of sound waves
