 It’s an approach for language teaching
  and learning.
 Content and Language Integrated
  Learning means students learn new
content at the same time as they are
  learning a new language.
 The theory behind CLIL is that when the
focus is on meaningful content, students
learn to understand and use the target
language by experiencing it as a
  learning tool.
 This approach has its roots in bilingual
  education.
 CLIL differs from topic-based approaches:
► in CLIL students learn new content at the
same time they’re learning the new (target)
language. The main objective is to learn the
content as well as the language.

    ►in topic-based approaches, familiar
content is used as a way of giving meaning
and context to new language. The main
objective is that students learn the
    language.
 The curricular design for upper
  secondary school suggests the AICLE
  approach (Aprendizaje Integrado de
  Contenidos Curriculares y Lenguas
  Extranjeras)
 This approach complements the
  Communicative Task -Based approach
  suggested for lower secondary school
 According to the Curriculum Design, by
focusing in problem solving and getting
to know how to do things, the AICLE
  approach motivates students to solve
problems and to do things even in other
  languages.
 Students USE the foreign language to
LEARN while they LEARN to USE the
  target language.
 CONTENT – allows students progress in
knowledge, skills and comprehension of topics
    belonging to different school subjects.
 COMMUNICATION –refers to using the
language to learn while learning to use it.
 COGNITION –implies the development of
    cognitive skills to understand concepts
(abstract and concrete), build knowledge and
    use the language.
 CULTURE –allows students get in contact with
different perspectives to become aware of the
    other and themselves.
