Sentences are classified in to four according to their structure i.e. the type and number of clauses it consists.
1. Simple Sentence

1.Simple Sentence
A simple sentence, also called an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought.
The dog barked.
The baby cried.
Girma and Alemu play football every afternoon.
St. George played well and won the game.
Simple Sentence
A simple sentence contains a subject and verb.
It expresses a single complete thought.
A simple sentence is a single independent clause.
A simple sentence might have a compound subject and/or compound verb.
Simple Sentence with Compound Subject and/or Compound Verb
The simple sentence may have a compound subject: The dog and the cat howled.
It may have a compound verb:
The dog howled and barked.
It may have a compound subject and a compound verb:
The dog and the cat howled and yowled respectively.
2. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence consists of two or more simple sentences joined by
(1) a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction
(and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so):
The dog barked, and the cat yowled.
(2) a semicolon:
The dog barked; the cat yowled.
(3) a comma, but ONLY when the simple sentences
are being treated as items in a series:
The dog barked, the cat yowled, and the rabbit
chewed.
Compound Sentence
A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (FANBOYS).
A compound sentence can also consist of two independent clauses joined by semi-colon
3. Complex Sentence
A complex sentence contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
A. When he handed in his homework, he
forgot to give the teacher the last page. B. The teacher returned the homework after
she noticed the error. C. The students are studying because they
have a test tomorrow. D. After they finished studying, Juan and
Maria went to the movies. E. Juan and Maria went to the movies after
they finished studying.
COMPLEX SENTENCES / ADJECTIVE CLAUSES
A. The woman who(m) my mom talked to
sells cosmetics. B. The book that Jonathan read is on the shelf. C. A girl whom I know was recently accepted
to Harvard University.
D. The Eiffel Tower, which is located in Paris,
is visited by millions of tourists annually.
The underlined part is the independent clause.
Raw relative clauses
Relative clauses are used to combine two sentences that contain identical noun phrases into a single sentence. A relative pronoun like who, whom, that, which, or whose replaces the duplicate noun phrase and relates the two clauses. Relative clauses can be either restrictive or non-restrictive, with restrictive clauses being essential to the meaning of the sentence and non-restrictive clauses providing extra, non-essential information. 3. Exceptions to the standard word order are allowed for emphasis or style, but generally nothing comes between the subject and verb or verb and object in English sentences.

Sentence Fragments
This was a slide show I created to teach my classmates about sentence fragments. The sources I used are included in the slide show so that anyone may look and learn from these in a more in-depth manner if they choose to.
Sentence and clause in english
- Clauses contain a subject and verb and can include objects, complements, or adjuncts providing more details.
- Simple sentences have one clause while compound sentences have two or more main clauses joined by coordinating conjunctions.
- Complex sentences contain at least one main clause and one subordinate clause introduced by a conjunction or wh-word that provides context about the main clause.

Phrases and clauses
Phrase and clause are the most important elements of English grammar. Phrase and clause cover everything a sentence has. Clauses are the center of sentences and phrases strengthen the sentences to become meaningful. If the clauses are the pillars of a building, the phrases are the bricks. A phrase usually is always present within a clause, but a phrase cannot have a clause in it. The basic difference between a clause and a phrase is that a clause must have a finite verb and a phrase must not. - 4. Conjunctions “Conjunction is a word or words which joins/connects together sentences ,and sometimes words.” Examples: Ali and Ahmad are brothers. He tried hard, but failed in the exam. He was running because he was scared.

Subordination conjunctions “ A subordinating conjunction joins a main clause to a subordinating( dependent ) clause .” They are after, because, if , that, before , when , where….. and can come any where in the sentence. Examples: You will pass if you work hard. Bob is absent because he is ill. I waited for my friend until he came. Since we had done our work, we decided to play.
- 10. THAN is also a subordinating conjunction i.e. I like you better than ( I like ) him. his bark is worse than his bite ( is bad ). He is taller than I ( am tall ).
- 11. Correlative conjunctions “ Conjunctions which are used in pairs are known to be correlative conjunction .” Like either…or, neither….nor, whether…or Either take it or leave it. Whether you are going with us or going home. Though he is suffering, yet he does not complain.
- 12. Compound conjunctions “ Compound expressions, a phrase or a group of words which are used as conjunctions are known as compound conjunctions.” Like He walks as though he is very lame. He looks as if he wants to kill me. We stayed awake so that we could finish work.
