Deixis is a technical term (from Greek) for one of the most basic things we do with utterances (Yule, 1996, p. 9). It means “pointing via” language. Any linguistic form used to accomplish this “pointing” is called a deictic expression. Deictic expressions are also sometimes called indexical.

Introduction
Virginia woolf, one of the prominent representative Of Modernist novelist in England, has contributed significantly to the development of modern novel in both theory and practice. She abandoned traditional fictional devices and formulated her own distinctive techniques. The novels of woolf tend to be less concerned with outward reality than with the inner life. Her masterpiece, to the Lighthouse, serves as an excellent sample in analyzing woolf’s literary theory and her experimental techniques.
Origin of the Word
The phrase “Stream of Consciousness” was coined by William James 1 to describe the flow of thoughts of the waking mind. Subsequently his phrase began to be used in a literary context to describe the narrative method by which certain novelists have described the unspoken thoughts and feelings of their characters, without resorting to objectives description or conventional dialogue. James Joyce was a pioneer in using this technique in his novels of which the best known are Ulysses and The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. And this technique was also used by Virginia Woolf. The related phrase “interior monologue” is used to describe the inner movement of Consciousness in a character’s mind. A famous example of the interior monologue is the opening pages of Mrs. Dalloway. The use of devices of the stream of Consciousness and the interior monologue marks a revolution in the form of the novel because through these devices the author can represent the flux of a character’s thoughts, impressions, and emotions and reminiscences, often without any logical Sequence.
Virginia Woolf and To The Lighthouse
When we mention Virginia Woolf’s ‘To The Lighthouse’, it’s very natural to talk about her stream of consciousness technique. In this novel, the structure of external objective events is demised in scope and scale, or almost e completely dissolved. It is composed of the continual activity of characters’ consciousness and shower of impressions. External events occupy little space in the novel the writer as an omniscient narrator has almost completely vanished and almost everything stated appears by the way of reflection in the consciousness of the dramatic characters and the novel does not progress on “what – happens – next” basis, but rather moves forward through a series of scenes arranged according to a sequence of selected moments of consciousness and the techniques to

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

3. What is Cohesion?
The formal or the semantic links between clauses.
How an item (a pronoun, a noun or a conjunction)
in one clause may refer backward or forward in
another clause.
4. What is Coherence?
It is the overall interpretation of a text as a unified
piece of discourse.
Based on many linguists such as Brown and Yule,
it is possible to have discourse without cohesion.
Example:
Wife: The phone is ringing.
Husband: I’m in the shower.
Wife: OK.
5. The relationship between the two
elements is referred to as a tie.
Halliday and Hasan
describe cohesion as a semantic
phenomenon.
Interclausal: Cohesion within the clause
Intersentential: Cohesion whitin the
sentence
6. Intraclausal: Cohesion across the clause
Intrasentential: Cohesion across the
sentence
Example:
David talked to his father about the issue.
David talked to his father about the
problem and he helped him to get it
solved.
7. Cohesive devices are divided
into five categories:
Reference
Substitution
Ellipsis
Conjunction
Lexical Cohesion
8. Reference
A reference item is a word or phrase, the
identity of which can be determined by
referring to other parts of the text or the
context.
They include:
Pronouns, possessives, demonstratives
and definite article the.
9. Types of reference
Endophoric: reference within the text
Exophoric: reference outside the text.
Like something which a part of the context
of situation.
Example:
That man is a great teacher.
10. Two categories of endophoric
reference:
Anaphoric : referring backward
Cataphoric: referring forward
Cataphoric reference is less frequent than
the other types.
Example:
Usually after colon, semicolon and dash
Bear this in mind:
Hope for the best, plan for the worst.
11. Definite reference “the”
The is a less transparent type of reference
which is known as,“referential the”.
Example:
There was a man in the park.
The man was having an ice cream.
The ice cream was scrumptious.
12. Substitution
Substitution is the replacement of material
which would otherwise be anticipated in
the text.
A substitute word of phrase is replaced by
another.
Which jeans do you like?
The blue ones.
So, do, does, ….
13. Ellipsis
Ellipsis is the removal of material which
would otherwise be anticipated in the text
and it is a variation on substitution.
Question and answer routines.
A: do you speakTurkish?
B:Yes, I do./No, I don’t.
14. Conjunction
Christiansen (2011) describes conjunction
as the most explicit and obvious cohesive
device in a text because the meaning
relation is contained in the cohesive item
itself.
15. Four major types of conjunction:
Additive (besides,… )
Adversative (despite, … )
Casual (so, …. )
Temporal (then, finally, …. )
16. Coordinating Conjunctions:
FAN BOYS
For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
A coordinating conjunction joins parts
of a sentence (for example words or
independent clauses) that are grammatically
equal or similar.A coordinating
conjunction shows that the elements it
joins are similar in importance and
structure.
17. There are seven coordinating conjunctions, and they are all
short words of only two or three letters:
and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so
Look at these examples - the two elements that the coordinating
conjunction joins are shown in square brackets [ ]:
I like [tea] and [coffee].
[Ram likes tea], but [Anthony likes coffee].
Coordinating conjunctions always come between the words or
clauses that they join.
When a coordinating conjunction joins independent clauses, it is
always correct to place a comma before the conjunction:
I want to work as an interpreter in the future, so I am studying
Russian at university.
However, if the independent clauses are short and well-
balanced, a comma is not really essential:
She is kind so she helps people.
When "and" is used with the last word of a list, a comma is
optional:
He drinks beer, whisky, wine, and rum.
He drinks beer, whisky, wine and rum.
18. What Are Subordinating Conjunctions?
A subordinating conjunction is used to link
a subordinate clause (also known as
a dependent clause) to the main clause (also
known as an independent clause).
In each example below, the main clause is in
bold, and the subordinating conjunction is
shaded. She left early because Mike arrived
with his new girlfriend.
Keep your hand on the wound until the
nurse asks you to take it off.

21. Reiteration is repetition of a word, use
of a synonym, a near synonym, a
superordinate or a general class word.
see page 40 for examples.
Collocation is the way in which words
are used regularly together.
22. Two systems operate within
Collocation:
Hyponomy: relations between groups of
words.
E.g. tie, shirt, skirt ,… are hyponyms of
superordinate clothes.
Antonomy: the opposites
E.g: optimism and pessimism are pairs of
antinyms.
23. A motivational quote:
If you don’t like where you are standing,
change it!
You are not a tree.
