Galileo Censorship Essay
Galileo and Censorship
Over two centuries ago the Catholic Church tried Galileo, because he published his book in 1632 that
supported the heliocentric ideas that originated from Copernicus. The church claimed that the
heliocentric theory went against scripture. During this time the Catholic Church believed in the idea
that the Earth was at the center of the universe. This was called the geocentric theory, which had been
around for nearly 1500 years. Galileo was tried less than a year later in 1633. The trial was private,
because the church feared the community would support him, because he was one of the most
achieved astronomers of their time. The church s committee unanimously voted that his book, the Two
Chief World Systems violated his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The committee was clinging to tradition and the knowledge that had been passed down to them for the
last 1500 years. The church took the scripture too literal, and it clouded their judgment. Galileo came
to the committee (church) with two propositions, the first being The sun is in the center of the world
and is altogether immovable in respect to local motion the second was, The earth is not the center of
the world nor it is immovable, but it moves as a whole and also with a daily motion. Within a couple
days the committee came to a conclusion that the propositions were foolish (Copernicanism, page
152). Galileo could not demonstrate the theory, so the church did not take his claim seriously. The
church felt threatened by the claim, and feared that it would weaken the power they had. This
corrupted the committees view of the book, which caused the unfair treatment Galileo received. The
treatment Galileo received justified his actions for publishing the book without the churches consent.
It was wrong to disregard Galileo s theories, because of past beliefs. The church should have been
more open minded of the idea and turned to science to disprove it rather than

Identity in Cindy Sherman´s Contemporary Art
Identity is one of the most significant aspects in the discourses of contemporary art. An artist s identity
can reveal cultural and personal truths about them through the employment of specific subjects,
techniques, and colors incorporated into their artwork. Cindy Sherman, the famous feminist artist,
portrays a plethora of different identities in her photographic works in order to highlight societal
issues such as stereotypes, perceptions, and biases. Although Sherman does not blatantly set out to
become an activist for femininity, audiences inherently view her work as attempting to cross
boundaries and bring forth political statements because of the myriad androgynous, feminine, and
sexist facets integrated into her images. In order to display the importance of identity in culture, Cindy
Sherman refrains from revealing her own identity in her art and because of these ambiguous images,
she allows for the identities of her audience to be reflected back at them, bringing forth awareness of
inequality, while quietly calling for the anticipated change of these enduring stigmas. Cindy Sherman
began focusing her creative outlets through photography during her time at Buffalo State College, NY
in 1972 1976. Despite her future success with photography, Sherman had considerable difficulty
honing the techniques of darkroom development. Nevertheless, the real magic clearly displayed in her
photographs began to occur in the very confines of her bedroom few years later. According to

Destruction In Ray Bradbury s The Illustrated Man
In the book The Illustrated Man, Ray Bradbury uses the theme of world destruction in several of his
stories: The Highway , The Last Night of the World , and Zero Hour . He expresses his opposition to
war to us through these four stories by writing of atom wars, and extra terrestrial conflicts and
annihilation. Through his writings, we see his views and stances on how the world has turned a blind
eye from equality and worldly respect to a more demanding and selfish state of mind. Ray Bradbury
starts the theme of world destruction in his book with the story, The Highway . In it, he talks about a
highway that is often bustling with cars despite being located in a quite desolate area. Near it is a

A Martian from another planet comes to Earth and plots to destroy it through a child s game, acting
out his plan as an imaginary friend to the children. While the parents of the children assume their kids

annihilation of their world. In the end, their domain is destroyed along with the entire population. In
every yard on the street children brought out knives and forks and pokers and old stovepipes and can

Drosophila Melanogaster Lab Report Essay
Introduction
In most kitchens the small flies that are found are Drosophila Melanogaster also called fruit fly. They
are often brought in by ripened tomatoes, grapes and other perishable items from the garden.
Drosophila melanogaster is a little two winged insect about 3mm long two winged insect that belongs
to the Diptera, the order of the flies. The drosophila egg is about half a millimeter long. Fertilization
takes about one day the embryo to develop and hatch into a worm like larva. The larva eats and grows
continuously, after two days as a third in star larva; it moults one more time to form an immobile
pupa. Over the next four days, the body is completely remodeled to give the adult winged form, which
then hatches from the pupal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some larva containing vials had hatched into flies. Counting of the flies began at this point. As flies
started to grow, at different rates for each vial, with in the first seven days after all larva had hatched
the flies were counted. The procedure was done according to theDrosophila manual (45 2620)
Results
F1 Predictions
For our first generation (F1) of flies we chose to cross apterous (+) females and white eye (w) males.
We predicted that the mutation would be sex linked recessive. So if the female was the sex with the
mutation then all females would be wild type heterozygous. Heterozygous is a term used when the two
genes for a trait are opposite. The males would all be white eye since they only have one X
chromosome. If the males were the sex that had the mutation then all the flies would be wild type but
the females would be heterozygous.
F1 Outcomes
From the cross white eye males with wild females, our results were we got both phenotypes in the
males as well as the females to be wild type.
F2 Predictions
Based upon observation of the F1 generation, we hypothesize that the inheritance of the white eye (W)
mutation is sex linked and recessive wild type.
For the F2 generation the phenotype that was obtained is as followed. See Figure1.

Christopher Clombus Is Not A Hero Essay
Introduction
In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. That s the one date everyone remembers, the date in virtually
every school child s history textbook. But, they leave out pretty much everything about Columbus and
his exploration of the New World. It s the part many people have yet to learn about. For years,
Columbus has been presented to us as a hero. In 1934, President Roosevelt even gave Columbus his
own holiday. To this day, we celebrate his discovery of America. What is found in history textbooks
now, have seemed to show another side of Christopher Columbus, a side that they wouldn t dare teach
in elementary school. It s the rest of Columbus tale of discovery . This paper will show you that

The Indians taught them how to grow food and use the land to survive. Columbus and his men would
trade a lot with the Indians and they all lived happily ever after. That s pretty much where our textbook
stopped. I have never learned anything else about Columbus until now. There is so much that my third
grade teacher left out and didn t explain.
REASONS FOR HIM NOT BEEN A HERO Columbus gets a lot of credit for discovering land that
already had people living on it, a land that has already been encountered by other people way before
Columbus was even born. In 70,000 to 12,000 B.C. Siberia explorers sailed to Alaska. In 10,000 600
B.C., Siberians also went to Canada and the state we now call New Mexico. A little more recently the
Vikings in 1000 1350 came from Greenland and Iceland. They traveled to Labrado, Baffin Land,
Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Cape Cod and further south. Around 1311 and 1460 explorers from West
Africa came across to Haiti, Panama, and Brazil (Loewen 48). These were only a few of the many
encounters of the Americas. A result of these explorations was the establishment of Indian villages and
the life they began to lead.
The fact that Columbus didn t actually discover America isn t the idea that is most disturbing when
considering misleading history that children are taught. It is the information that was kept from us
while younger that now should be revealed, since we are at the age that we can comprehend and

Tobacco And Its Effects On The United States
Tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. According to the American
Lung Association in 2009, 20.6% of adults were current smokers. In 1970, the United States banned
television and radio advertisements of cigarettes. Across the world countries battle similar issues in
how to help prevent deaths, lower healthcare costs, and educate the population. Countries have banned
advertising, posted health causes, renamed brands, and even included informational fliers in packs of
cigarettes. In 2001, The Government of India decided to ban the advertising of cigarettes. This ban
was created to help the youth of India and hoped to reduce the amount of future smokers. The
proposal of this restriction caused debates between the government, advertising companies, and
tobacco manufacturers. The supporting and dismantling arguments for these ethical and commercial
causes of the ban have enabled the government to make their final decision. The Government of India
has created an anti tobacco plan to tackle the growing issues of tobacco, health concerns, and rising
death toll. Their first goal was to eliminate advertising as this was perceived to encourage the youth to
take up the dangerous habit. This ban posed ethical and commercial challenges for both sides of the
argument. The government has the power to pass laws to help prevent people from smoking and
protect its people. They found the ethical decision was to use this power by creating and

Connections Between U.S. Presidents and Roman Emperors
Throughout history, countless leaders, had their periods of leadership among the masses; a story of
how they claimed their superior position. Are there connections though between leaders and their
lives, positions, and their form of a kingdom? My goal is to find these connections between the United
States current and former presidents, Barrack Obama and George W. Bush and two Roman emperors,
Augustus and his great grandson, Nero.
After a 20 year period of transition from the republic and the assassination of Julius Caesar, Augustus
returned to Rome forming an alliance with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus known as the Second
Triumvirate which led to the establishment of the Roman Empire. The first 206 years of the Roman
Empire were known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was suspected by some historians that Nero caused the fire of 64. Nero attempted to rebuild Rome
and organize the construction of the buildings that were burned or destroyed. The attempt to rebuild
Rome cost immense funds that the Rome State Treasury didn t have, causing the Roman currency to
decrease in value.
Nero was surrounded by death and as emperor was known for his many of his atrocities and
executions, including the execution of his mother. Even as a child, Nero was surrounded by death in
his family. Nero s father, Lucious Ahenobarbus, died when Nero was 2 years old. Several other family
members deaths followed including: his uncle, aunt and cousin; his half brother, and his mother. After
becoming emperor, he had ordered the execution of his mother for having indecent relations.
Later in his reign, Nero became one of the first prosecutors of Christians. After the fire of 64, Nero
tortured and executed countless Christians. Was known by some historians as the antichrist that the
bible predicted.
Our government now has great contrast to the Roman Empire but like the up Empire, we look to one
man for leadership and approval. In a democracy, that one man is known as the president. The masses
vote on a president to represent them for four years. As president, they have several responsibilities
whether it is foreign relations and policy, decided to pass a bill, deploying troops

Rebecca Harding Davis Life In The Iron Mills
Rebecca Harding Davis was a groundbreaking author whose work, Life in the Iron Mills, examined a
socioeconomic system that failed some while keeping others empowered. The issues of power and
social class that are embedded in the work prompts readers to look closer at the unskilled immigrant
laborers, whose living and working conditions were deplorable, and compare them to the capitalists
and wealthy mill owners whose financial success rested mainly on the workers who were being
marginalized. The narrator s call to the readers, Stop a moment...hide your disgust, take no heed to
your clean clothes, and come right down with me, is actualized through the eyes of the middle and

Teaching Business, Health, And Other Life Skills
New Insights
Through work in this graduate programs here has been a constant gain of knowledge and new
perspectives being brought into light. For my interview, I chose a recent graduate looking to start
teaching business, health, and other life skills to high school students; this is mainly do my inability to
find the one area in student affairs I am truly passionate about, so I chose to speak with one of the
most passionate individuals I know. She did not wish for her name to be included, so I am going to
refer to her as Abby Rock. Abby places strong personal value on health, wellness, nutrition, and wants
to go back into high school to teach basic principles, from health and business, to teenagers. To help
her reach this goal, Abby chose to work towards getting her master s degree in education with a focus
on teaching. This was done simultaneously while she ran the operations of her family s gym,
completing her personal trainer certification, and observing teachers in various classrooms to find her
teaching style. I chose Abby because she is honest and does not stray far from her beliefs; this
interested me in how she will adapt to the classroom environment instead of the typical gym
environment she has been in.
Interview Breakdown Due to her busy schedule and travel constraints, the interview was conducted
over email throughout the past week. Abby defined leadership as, doing what is right when no one is

Physical Therapy And Mental Therapy
Can you imagine being in pain every day doing daily activities that have to be done? Your stiff joints,
sore muscles, and injured limbs keep you from enjoying life. Physical therapy can be the answer to
cure those problems. Physical Therapists, are trained in movement and movement disorders and are
considered specialists in musculoskeletal function (Adams). Physical therapists examine patients to
diagnosis possible injuries where pain is occurring and create plans to get them returning to activity.
Physical therapy will help improve mobility, balance, and is a way to avoid surgery. It is the cost
effective way to go and will help speed up recovery and prevent future injuries to. Physical therapy is
a beneficial part of the health field.
Once the physical therapists have diagnosed the injury, they design rehabilitation programs for their
patients. Physical therapy will help patients recover after surgery. MoveForwardPT, approved by The
American Physical Therapy Association, wrote about benefits of physical therapy and how physical
therapists play a role in recovery. After injuries, treatment plans can be designed for the patient s
individual goals, challenges, and needs. Receiving treatment by a physical therapist is rarely a passive
activity, and participating in your own recovery can be empowering (Benefits). Plans with exercises
are made for patients after surgery or when going to physical therapy. The rehabilitation plans give

Introduction:
In this Lab report we will be using Red Cabbage extract as an indicator to determine the pH of
substances. The purpose of this experiment is to see if and how base and acids react. Indicators are
chemicals that change color depending on the pH solution that they are dissolved in. This experiment
will determine which items we use to determine ph. The pH of a solution indicates its acidity or
alkalinity. There is a ph. scale that determines if the items such as lemons or bleach are an acid or a
base. I have chosen to use red cabbage in this experiment so that I can know the range of the item that

In the movie productions of And Then There Were None and A Wrinkle In Time, the directors did not
follow the original storyline of the book. There are many differences between the books and the
movies, but there is also similarities. While most of the movie follows the storyline, there are some
changes made to the storyline. These changes made in the movie impacted the storyline a lot.
In A Wrinkle In Time, one of the biggest differences from the book is the plot sequencing in the
movie. The movie first starts with Meg at school daydreaming about her father and her talking with
each other on their stargazing rock, where in the book it starts with Meg talking about the

Eugenics Perfect Society
Does Eugenics Really Lead to a Perfect Society?
In the perfect world there would be an elimination of disease, discrimination, poverty and many other
horrible aspects of the world, or would there? It is arguable whether or not that type of world would be
perfect because much of the creation of it would be the result of the engineering of human genes. This
concept is called eugenics which is mainly a set of beliefs and practices that aims at improving the
genetic quality of a human population. Some people in the world believe that to create the perfect
population they need to self direct human evolution and modify an individual s genes. Ultimately,
eugenics is a bad idea and should never be carried out. This is because when trying to genetically ...

morally wrong because it involves sterilizing unfit individuals to prevent them from passing on their
negative traits to offspring. The eugenics movement was actually practiced in the United States during
the 20th century with the government implementing sterilization programs in 33 states. These
programs targeted people that were mentally ill, alcoholism, criminality chronic poverty, blindness,
deafness, feeble mindedness and promiscuity and many people that were subject to these sterilizations
had no say in the matter. Identically, eugenics would take part in only letting people with desirable
traits reproduce eliminating the moral obligation of many people to have children. This just proves

Essay about Spiritual Warfare, Doctrines and...
Silencing the enemy is a very fitting title for this book. It is fitting because the author, Robert Gay,
explains how God suppresses the devices of the adversary through the praise and worship of His
people. Although the term spiritual warfare is not found in scripture, Paul expounds on the concept
throughout the New Testament. He encourages the saints to Put on the whole armor of God that ye
may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil . This scripture informs us that we are in a battle, a
battle that has been raging since the beginning of time. It is not a battle that one can see with the naked
eye. Nor is it a battle that is fought with natural weapons. It is a battle that is fought in the spirit world.

The Bible informs us that as they sung and praised God the Moabite armies became disoriented and
began to fight one another. Perhaps this is why we schedule the choirs and praise teams to minister
before the preached Word. Singing spiritual hymns to God will soften the hearts and prepare our
minds for what God has to say to us. Once our hearts are plowed or softened we can receive with joy
the assignments or correction God will give to us.
The author helps us to understand exactly who our enemy is and who our enemy is not. Our enemy is
not flesh and blood but, principalities, and spiritual wickedness in high places . People are often used
by demonic spirits to act in adverse ways. We must never target people as our foes. The enemy would
love to have us overlook him and turn on one another. Our brothers and sisters are not who we should
fight. It is the spirit behind them using them to distract us into doing something we will later regret.
Our God is loving, kind and merciful, but there is another side to His personality, the side that defends
and fights for His people. Paul declares we must know the goodness and severity of God. To
understand the full character of God we must read the entire Bible. God is a lover of His creation and
He is a warrior who fights for those whom He loves. The author makes an excellent point that since

Who Is Grendel s Mother
Inversion of the Germanic Feminine Ideals During the sixth century, in which the setting of Beowulf
takes place, the Germans held an idealistic conception of a woman s behavior and responsibilities. In
Jane Chance s literary criticism The Structural Unity of Beowulf: The Problem of Grendel s Mother,
she frequently claims that Grendel s Mother inverts the Germanic roles of the mother and the queen,
or lady. She has the form of a woman and is weaker than a man...but unlike most mothers and queens,
she fights her own battles (Chance 155). Many critics and readers view the episode in Beowulf
involving Grendel s Mother as largely extraneous, (152) however I concur with Jane Chance s
argument that Grendel s Mother fits within the structural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Grendel s death, Grendel s Mother, intent on avenging the loss of her son, attacks Heorot, her
masculine aggression contrasting with the feminine passivity of both Hildeburh and Wealhtheow
(158). Wealhtheow fulfills her role as the peace weaver by creating harmony between the Danes and
the Helmings. When Hildeburh s son dies, she appropriately mourns in a passive state. In both events,
Wealhtheow and Hildeburh behave statically, which is the ideal feminine reaction in their
circumstances. Contrastingly, Grendel s Mother is enraged and infuriated for the loss of her son, thus
she intends to avenge Grendel s death. Due to Grendel s Mother s pride and impulsiveness, she is
compelled to seek revenge and kill Aeschere, which ultimately brings upon her own downfall. Since
Grendel s Mother is a woman, she is not justified to crave revenge or to act in an aggressive state.
Additionally, a female should remain loyal to her husband not her son, yet Grendel s Mother is
obsessively devoted to Grendel. Because this quote explains the contradicting attitudes of Grendel s
Mother compared to the other women in the poem, it demonstrates how Grendel s Mother opposes the
Germanic ideals, therefore leading me to my agreement with Chance s

The Texas Railroad Commission And The American Economy Essay
The Texas Railroad Commission What does one think about when they hear the words Texas Railroad
Commission? Many things may come to mind but it s really only two things and those are natural gas
and oil. Which happened to be one of Texas biggest assets year round. It is one of the largest bodies in
all of the country which gives it such a large influence on the supply and prices of oil in the country.
When the commission first came about its original purpose was to oversee the railroads. When James
Hogg lead the Populist style resentment for the railroads he won his election in 1890 and became
governor mainly based on the fact that, he had promised to have the railroads regulated. The Texas
Railroad Commission evolved from its founding in 1891 to a multi divisional regulatory commission
that oversaw not only railroads but also a number of other industries central to the modern American
economy: petroleum production, natural gas utilities, and motor carriers. (Childs, 2005) The state
simultaneously amended the constitution to allow such a body. With this being established it gave
jurisdiction over the operation of railroads, rates, wharves, terminals and express companies.
Governor Hogg s first appointments were John H. Reagan (chairman), Judge William Pinckney
McLean, and Lafayette L. Foster. In 1894 the legislature made the agency elective, the three
commissioners henceforth serving six year, overlapping terms in Austin. (Prindle, 1991) Despite the

How Technology Has Changed Copyright
The Creative Commons by Lawrence Lessig discusses how freedom to create has drastically changed
ever since its origin. I think this was the most interesting article I have read about copyright. Lessig
discusses the era of creativity and freedom of using one s work to create and imagine something
completely knew. The author uses Walt Disney, Warner Brothers, and comics examples to address his
views regarding how the art of creativity and freedom has changed upon the era of digital media. How
technology has changed the freedom to created? One thing I was surprised by was how many times
the copyright law has been altered. It used to be where copyright material had limited time until it
ended up in public domain for others to uses. However, changes to copyright law throughout the years
has keep on increasing the year of ownership, which gives big companies to monopolize. This lives no
room for others to uses one s material. Automatically, copyright law regulates essentially any creative
work reduced to tangible form. (pp.6). Another point I found interesting was how technology itself
enforcing the copyright law, not the court. In addition, technology enforcing the copyright law has its
own copyright law. It is technology which determines what your freedom is (pp.7). Even the software
codes are copyrighted to protect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lessig mentions an example of this where a fan of the Sony Aibo dog alters the code to make dog
dance. He creates a website and provide others with instructions on how they can make their dog
dance. Great as it sounds, Sony took the website down immediately claiming under Digital Millennum
Copyright Act, it is forbidden (pp.8). That s another thing, how many copyright laws and regulations
are there? So, every time I want to do something, I better check 20 different copyright laws/acts to
make sure I don t have $10,000 fine waiting for me the next

AAA Safety Patrol Scholarship Essay
Imagine at the end of the school day exhausted teachers ready to release the students to their busses
and overly eager children quick to get on the bus and go home. Mixtures of children between the
grades from kindergarten to fifth grade erratically search for their assigned bus like a stampede of
animals. Luckily for me I was able to witness the releasing of students to their busses at the end of the
day before and after Ontario Local Schools joined the AAA Safety Patrol program which allowed me
to distinguish a transformation between the chaotic and unsafe transfer of students to and from school
to a safer and more efficient processes. However, being a member of the AAA Safety Patrol program

As being a proud representative of the AAA Safety Patrol program I was taught the value of patience.
For instance, when someone needed help I would listen and provide my insight. In few instances when
a school bus would arrive after the students were let out of school I would patiently wait with the
students in order to ensure their safety and assist the younger students who were unaware of where
their bus was and direct them where to go. I apply the value of patience in my everyday life because I
often volunteer in first grade or kindergarten classrooms and in order to assist the students requires an
immense amount of patience. The program has also taught me the value of commitment because every
day I would ensure safety before and after school and as a group the safety patrollers would frequently
meet at least once a month to check up with our advisor. I have applied the value of commitment to
my life because I am in many clubs, sports, and organizations that require commitment in order to
participate, including Student Council, Drug Free Trader Card Seniors, National Honor Society, and
etc. Finally, I emphasized the making the right choices in the classroom and while I was patrolling
because I was not only representing myself but the AAA School Safety Patrol program. As being a
proud member of the AAA School Safety

The Yellow Wallpaper, By Harrison Bergeron
By comparing both stories together, and the characters within them, it is clear that neither the narrator
from The Yellow Wallpaper or Harrison from Harrison Bergeron agree with the way they are being
treated caused by their social, political and economic standpoint in society. In both stories they have
opposing forces trying to dictate their life, and telling them who they are supposed to be. Within the
story The Yellow Wallpaper , the narrator is being authorized by her husband john and in the story
Harrison Bergeron , Harrison is being oppressed by his government system. In both societies of the
stories, the characters are treated differently for who they are. The people to have more power in their
lives, decide who they are and what they can be. The ultimate outcome of their life is up to the forces
controlling them. Both characters have no way to escape the labels given to them, without going
against the people restraining their potential. The characters have many good attributes to them, but
are confined to being what others tell them to be. The narrator has wonderful writing skills and an
active mind which allows her to be creative and have an artistic personality, but her husband will not

How Does Daniel Keyes Use Simile In Flowers For Algernon
I wanted to race algernon some more but Burt said thats enough for one day. They let me hold him for
a minit. Hes not so bad, (Keyes 120). Charlie Gordon has a good heart, but a very low intelligence. In
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes, Charlie Gordon is eager for a surgery that will hopefully triple
his IQ and make him much more intelligent than the average man. After Charlie gets his operation, he
meets a lab animal, a mouse named Algernon, who has had the same operation that Charlie had. Dr.
Strauss, the man who started this all, has Charlie and Algernon race to solve mazes that measure
Charlie s intellectual growth, which increases proving the operation successful. Daniel Keyes focused
on multiple craft moves: simile, foreshadow, and personification to give the reader a way to associate
the story with ways that they can relate to.

Hilton ITT Case Study Essay
1. Why might Bollenbach have opened his bidding for ITT at $55 per share? What was his likely
strategy?
The $55 value is on the lower range of the analyst eztimates, with a best guess estimate of $67.94.
Since the value of the stock had been below $45 for 4 months, the offer of 55 dollars represented a
29% premium to investors. Bollenbach knew that management would be resistant of any attempt to be
acquired, regardless of price, because of failed previous attempts to negotiate a friendly merger at year
end 1996. The 55 dollar benchmark created an expectation for ITT management to achieve that level,
or higher and the premium is enough to demonstrate to investors it is a real offer. Their support will be
key as they will have a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bollenbach knew that the next steps would be critical or the deal to go through. As such it was
necessary to first research the investors and arbiters to have better negotiation tactics when the time
comes. The resistant board of directors had not changed in the mean time and would likely resist any
offer, including the unlikely event of another contender entering bidding. If the price of the stock fell
below the $55 range, or the Board of Directors changed Bollenback would likely aggressively
negotiate with shareholders to close the deal as quickly as possible.
3. ITT s value has changed a lot over the recent events. Prior to any offer when ITT s stock was
trading at 43 dollars, the stand alone value of its equity was 16.4 billion dollars. With the 55 dollar
offer to ITT, the company s value went up to approximately 21 billion. After the offer, the stock was
trading at $63.50, which gave the total equity a value of 24.2 billion dollars. With the proposed
trivesture proposal, the company would lose synergistic value as three separate companies, compared
to one large company. Examples of these include a number of overhead costs which gain economies of
scale. In addition, ITT likely has synergistic revenues coming from the fact that it operates all three
business segments. Analyst estimates indicate that the present value of the synergies whichh ITT

This doesn t mean selling yourself short but if you want a raise, you have to be able to justify why you
are worth it. If you can show on paper why your boss should pay you $1 million, then go ahead and do
it. But if you can t, you want to ask for a raise that s closer to the value you add to the company.
So, how can you pick a realistic figure? How do you ensure you aren t asking for something
unattainable while also ensuring you aren t asking for too little? Before you walk into the negotiating
room, you need to conduct research.
To determine what you should earn, you should take the following steps:
List your current tasks and responsibilities. Look at your job contract and write down the tasks and
responsibilities you are required to do under your current contract. Underneath, list the tasks and
responsibilities you are doing that are not part of your current job description the additional value you

Animals In Life Of Pi
The film Life of Pi is an unsuccessful adaptation by reducing the contents of Pi s knowledge of
animals, scenes are made less scary, and the lack of presence of his peers. First, the film reduced the
introduction a lot where it contains most of Pi s knowledge about animals. In the movie, Pi is unable
to tame Richard Parker who represents Pi s animalistic instincts. Here, it shows how surviving in the
wild makes Pi lose control of himself when he took the fish from the tiger, and dislike his carnivorous
side as he tried many ways to kill Richard Parker for almost half of the film. Even though they remain
a wary distrust towards one another, in the novel however, Pi and Richard Parker are shown with a

Jeremy Bentham And John Stuart Mill s Mill On Utilitarianism
Mill on Utilitarianism The creed which accepts as the foundation of morals, Utility, or the Greatest
Happiness Principle, holds that actions are right in proportion as they tend to promote happiness,
wrong as they tend to produce the reverse of happiness (Utilitarianism, Mill). This theory of
Utilitarianism was generated by the original Utilitarians, Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill. Mill
says: Happiness is intended pleasure, and the absence of pain; by unhappiness, pain, and the privation
of pleasure (Utilitarianism, Mill). Furthermore, these basic principles of Utilitarianism are located
under the Greatest Happiness Principle which states that actions are considered moral when they

Angelynn York. (Utilitarianism, mill)
In the case of Angelynn York vs. The Chino Police Department, York was sexually harassed by Officer
Ron Story when confiding in the Chino Police Department to address a violent assault that had taken
place earlier that day on her person. Ms. Angelynn York endured many physical and mental pains
while the Chino Police Department had many pleasures and only a small number of pains.
(Philosophy, Rachels)
This leads to Mill s categorization of the mental and physical pains of the parties involved. The

  • 2. Galileo Censorship Essay Galileo and Censorship Over two centuries ago the Catholic Church tried Galileo, because he published his book in 1632 that supported the heliocentric ideas that originated from Copernicus. The church claimed that the heliocentric theory went against scripture. During this time the Catholic Church believed in the idea that the Earth was at the center of the universe. This was called the geocentric theory, which had been around for nearly 1500 years. Galileo was tried less than a year later in 1633. The trial was private, because the church feared the community would support him, because he was one of the most achieved astronomers of their time. The church s committee unanimously voted that his book, the Two Chief World Systems violated his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The committee was clinging to tradition and the knowledge that had been passed down to them for the last 1500 years. The church took the scripture too literal, and it clouded their judgment. Galileo came to the committee (church) with two propositions, the first being The sun is in the center of the world and is altogether immovable in respect to local motion the second was, The earth is not the center of the world nor it is immovable, but it moves as a whole and also with a daily motion. Within a couple days the committee came to a conclusion that the propositions were foolish (Copernicanism, page 152). Galileo could not demonstrate the theory, so the church did not take his claim seriously. The church felt threatened by the claim, and feared that it would weaken the power they had. This corrupted the committees view of the book, which caused the unfair treatment Galileo received. The treatment Galileo received justified his actions for publishing the book without the churches consent. It was wrong to disregard Galileo s theories, because of past beliefs. The church should have been more open minded of the idea and turned to science to disprove it rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Identity in Cindy Sherman´s Contemporary Art Identity is one of the most significant aspects in the discourses of contemporary art. An artist s identity can reveal cultural and personal truths about them through the employment of specific subjects, techniques, and colors incorporated into their artwork. Cindy Sherman, the famous feminist artist, portrays a plethora of different identities in her photographic works in order to highlight societal issues such as stereotypes, perceptions, and biases. Although Sherman does not blatantly set out to become an activist for femininity, audiences inherently view her work as attempting to cross boundaries and bring forth political statements because of the myriad androgynous, feminine, and sexist facets integrated into her images. In order to display the importance of identity in culture, Cindy Sherman refrains from revealing her own identity in her art and because of these ambiguous images, she allows for the identities of her audience to be reflected back at them, bringing forth awareness of inequality, while quietly calling for the anticipated change of these enduring stigmas. Cindy Sherman began focusing her creative outlets through photography during her time at Buffalo State College, NY in 1972 1976. Despite her future success with photography, Sherman had considerable difficulty honing the techniques of darkroom development. Nevertheless, the real magic clearly displayed in her photographs began to occur in the very confines of her bedroom few years later. According to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Destruction In Ray Bradbury s The Illustrated Man In the book The Illustrated Man, Ray Bradbury uses the theme of world destruction in several of his stories: The Highway , The Last Night of the World , and Zero Hour . He expresses his opposition to war to us through these four stories by writing of atom wars, and extra terrestrial conflicts and annihilation. Through his writings, we see his views and stances on how the world has turned a blind eye from equality and worldly respect to a more demanding and selfish state of mind. Ray Bradbury starts the theme of world destruction in his book with the story, The Highway . In it, he talks about a highway that is often bustling with cars despite being located in a quite desolate area. Near it is a small rural style farm worked and owned ... While the parents of the children assume their kids are playing a harmless game with their imaginary friend, they are actually involved in a plot to the annihilation of their world. In the end, their domain is destroyed along with the entire population. In every yard on the street children brought out knives and forks and pokers and old stovepipes and can openers, (Bradbury 233). Bradbury tries to express to us in this how parents don t listen to their children because they thin Through his writings, we see his views and stances on how the world has turned a blind eye from equality and worldly respect, to a more demanding and selfish state of mind.k that because they re just kids with big imaginations, they could never be a threat to anything. • 5. Drosophila Melanogaster Lab Report Essay Introduction In most kitchens the small flies that are found are Drosophila Melanogaster also called fruit fly. They are often brought in by ripened tomatoes, grapes and other perishable items from the garden. Drosophila melanogaster is a little two winged insect about 3mm long two winged insect that belongs to the Diptera, the order of the flies. The drosophila egg is about half a millimeter long. Fertilization takes about one day the embryo to develop and hatch into a worm like larva. The larva eats and grows continuously, after two days as a third in star larva; it moults one more time to form an immobile pupa. Over the next four days, the body is completely remodeled to give the adult winged form, which then hatches from the pupal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some larva containing vials had hatched into flies. Counting of the flies began at this point. As flies started to grow, at different rates for each vial, with in the first seven days after all larva had hatched the flies were counted. The procedure was done according to theDrosophila manual (45 2620) Results F1 Predictions For our first generation (F1) of flies we chose to cross apterous (+) females and white eye (w) males. We predicted that the mutation would be sex linked recessive. So if the female was the sex with the mutation then all females would be wild type heterozygous. Heterozygous is a term used when the two genes for a trait are opposite. The males would all be white eye since they only have one X chromosome. If the males were the sex that had the mutation then all the flies would be wild type but the females would be heterozygous. F1 Outcomes From the cross white eye males with wild females, our results were we got both phenotypes in the males as well as the females to be wild type. F2 Predictions Based upon observation of the F1 generation, we hypothesize that the inheritance of the white eye (W) mutation is sex linked and recessive wild type. For the F2 generation the phenotype that was obtained is as followed. See Figure1. |Normal wings |Normal wings |No wings white |No wings | |Red eyes |White ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That s the one date everyone remembers, the date in virtually every school child s history textbook. But, they leave out pretty much everything about Columbus and his exploration of the New World. It s the part many people have yet to learn about. For years, Columbus has been presented to us as a hero. In 1934, President Roosevelt even gave Columbus his own holiday. To this day, we celebrate his discovery of America. What is found in history textbooks now, have seemed to show another side of Christopher Columbus, a side that they wouldn t dare teach in elementary school. The Indians taught them how to grow food and use the land to survive. Columbus and his men would trade a lot with the Indians and they all lived happily ever after. That s pretty much where our textbook stopped. I have never learned anything else about Columbus until now. There is so much that my third grade teacher left out and didn t explain. REASONS FOR HIM NOT BEEN A HERO Columbus gets a lot of credit for discovering land that already had people living on it, a land that has already been encountered by other people way before Columbus was even born. In 70,000 to 12,000 B.C. Siberia explorers sailed to Alaska. In 10,000 600 B.C., Siberians also went to Canada and the state we now call New Mexico. A little more recently the Vikings in 1000 1350 came from Greenland and Iceland. They traveled to Labrado, Baffin Land, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Cape Cod and further south. Around 1311 and 1460 explorers from West Africa came across to Haiti, Panama, and Brazil (Loewen 48). These were only a few of the many encounters of the Americas. A result of these explorations was the establishment of Indian villages and the life they began to lead. The fact that Columbus didn t actually discover America isn t the idea that is most disturbing when considering misleading history that children are taught. • 8. Tobacco And Its Effects On The United States Tobacco is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. According to the American Lung Association in 2009, 20.6% of adults were current smokers. In 1970, the United States banned television and radio advertisements of cigarettes. Across the world countries battle similar issues in how to help prevent deaths, lower healthcare costs, and educate the population. Countries have banned advertising, posted health causes, renamed brands, and even included informational fliers in packs of cigarettes. In 2001, The Government of India decided to ban the advertising of cigarettes. This ban was created to help the youth of India and hoped to reduce the amount of future smokers. The proposal of this restriction caused debates between the government, advertising companies, and tobacco manufacturers. The supporting and dismantling arguments for these ethical and commercial causes of the ban have enabled the government to make their final decision. The Government of India has created an anti tobacco plan to tackle the growing issues of tobacco, health concerns, and rising death toll. Their first goal was to eliminate advertising as this was perceived to encourage the youth to take up the dangerous habit. This ban posed ethical and commercial challenges for both sides of the argument. The government has the power to pass laws to help prevent people from smoking and protect its people. Connections Between U.S. Presidents and Roman Emperors Throughout history, countless leaders, had their periods of leadership among the masses; a story of how they claimed their superior position. Are there connections though between leaders and their lives, positions, and their form of a kingdom? My goal is to find these connections between the United States current and former presidents, Barrack Obama and George W. Bush and two Roman emperors, Augustus and his great grandson, Nero. After a 20 year period of transition from the republic and the assassination of Julius Caesar, Augustus returned to Rome forming an alliance with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus known as the Second Triumvirate which led to the establishment of the Roman Empire. Nero attempted to rebuild Rome and organize the construction of the buildings that were burned or destroyed. The attempt to rebuild Rome cost immense funds that the Rome State Treasury didn t have, causing the Roman currency to decrease in value. Nero was surrounded by death and as emperor was known for his many of his atrocities and executions, including the execution of his mother. Even as a child, Nero was surrounded by death in his family. Nero s father, Lucious Ahenobarbus, died when Nero was 2 years old. Several other family members deaths followed including: his uncle, aunt and cousin; his half brother, and his mother. After becoming emperor, he had ordered the execution of his mother for having indecent relations. Later in his reign, Nero became one of the first prosecutors of Christians. After the fire of 64, Nero tortured and executed countless Christians. Was known by some historians as the antichrist that the bible predicted. Our government now has great contrast to the Roman Empire but like the up Empire, we look to one man for leadership and approval. In a democracy, that one man is known as the president. Rebecca Harding Davis Life In The Iron Mills Rebecca Harding Davis was a groundbreaking author whose work, Life in the Iron Mills, examined a socioeconomic system that failed some while keeping others empowered. The issues of power and social class that are embedded in the work prompts readers to look closer at the unskilled immigrant laborers, whose living and working conditions were deplorable, and compare them to the capitalists and wealthy mill owners whose financial success rested mainly on the workers who were being marginalized. The narrator s call to the readers, Stop a moment...hide your disgust, take no heed to your clean clothes, and come right down with me, is actualized through the eyes of the middle and upper class gentlemen who visit the mill on what the narrator refers to as the crisis of [Hugh s] life (Davis). He encourages the saints to Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil . This scripture informs us that we are in a battle, a battle that has been raging since the beginning of time. It is not a battle that one can see with the naked eye. Once our hearts are plowed or softened we can receive with joy the assignments or correction God will give to us. The author helps us to understand exactly who our enemy is and who our enemy is not. She has the form of a woman and is weaker than a man...but unlike most mothers and queens, she fights her own battles (Chance 155). After Grendel s death, Grendel s Mother, intent on avenging the loss of her son, attacks Heorot, her masculine aggression contrasting with the feminine passivity of both Hildeburh and Wealhtheow (158). Wealhtheow fulfills her role as the peace weaver by creating harmony between the Danes and the Helmings. When Hildeburh s son dies, she appropriately mourns in a passive state. In both events, Wealhtheow and Hildeburh behave statically, which is the ideal feminine reaction in their circumstances. Contrastingly, Grendel s Mother is enraged and infuriated for the loss of her son, thus she intends to avenge Grendel s death. Due to Grendel s Mother s pride and impulsiveness, she is compelled to seek revenge and kill Aeschere, which ultimately brings upon her own downfall. Since Grendel s Mother is a woman, she is not justified to crave revenge or to act in an aggressive state. Additionally, a female should remain loyal to her husband not her son, yet Grendel s Mother is obsessively devoted to Grendel. It is one of the largest bodies in all of the country which gives it such a large influence on the supply and prices of oil in the country. When the commission first came about its original purpose was to oversee the railroads. The Texas Railroad Commission evolved from its founding in 1891 to a multi divisional regulatory commission that oversaw not only railroads but also a number of other industries central to the modern American economy: petroleum production, natural gas utilities, and motor carriers. (Childs, 2005) The state simultaneously amended the constitution to allow such a body. With this being established it gave jurisdiction over the operation of railroads, rates, wharves, terminals and express companies. Governor Hogg s first appointments were John H.
