Domestic Violence And Its Effects On Society
Murders, rapists, batterers and abusers all have two things in common: they are criminals, and they all
take away some part of another human being s life. Both men and women have to deal with the
everlasting issue of domestic violence. Defined by domesticviolence.org (2012) as a behavior used by
one person in a relationship to control the other , domestic violence can be physical, emotional,
sexual, verbal, or even financial. Although the issue of abusers being punished is a significant one, it
must be realized that there are victims, and those victims need help. Some countries have no concern
or sympathy for victims, as more than twenty countries have no laws against abuse ( Domestic
Violence in Developing Countries: An Intergenerational Crisis, n.d.). In many cases, victims should be
placed in a counseling program so that they can learn that the trauma they endured was not their fault.
Both Sarasota and Manatee counties have shelters for women who have been abused, however,
Sarasota County shelters do not offer counseling. Sarasota County is saving money by not having to
pay for counseling, but the counseling programs are worth the funds that would have to be put toward
them. Domestic violence, when physical, is against the law, therefore, the perpetrator may be sentence
to time in jail. However, these violent criminals, most often men, do eventually get out of jail. The
victims, who often face guilt and even dependency, usually go back to their abusers, and

Mandatory Trigger Warnings
At University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2014, the student Senate passed a resolution that called
for mandatory trigger warnings. This resolution, if it had become campus policy, proposed that not
only students who have been diagnosed with PTSD would be exempt from class for any possibly
triggering material but any student who was discomfited by the material (The Times Editorial Board).
In other words, students have the choice to decide if they attend lecture due to discomfort scot free.
According to the UCSB Newspaper, The Nexus, sophomore Bailey Loverin said the idea for campus
wide trigger warnings came to her in February after a professor showed a graphic film depicting rape.
Although she had herself not felt triggered by the film, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to NPR author Anya Kamenetz, 51% out of 841 professors reported that they ve used a
trigger warning in advance of introducing potentially difficult material (Kamenetz). University faculty
and staff have increasingly used trigger warnings to alert students to the possibility that they might be
affected or even harmed by potentially traumatic material. In colleges like Oberlin and UCSB, trigger
warnings are given in assumption that universities have a responsibility to protect students from
controversial or potentially sensitive material. Joanna Williams, director of the Centre for the Study of
Higher Education at the University of Kent, points out that the entire canon of English literature could
contain warnings as to the emotional nature of the content and the issues covered (Williams 17). This
has already begun to happen as some students have called for warnings for classic works like Chinua
Achebe s Things Fall Apart due its description of racial violence, so that those students who have been
previously victimized by racism or domestic violence can choose to avoid these works, due to the
possibility of a trigger. Williams also mentions that lecturers driven by the pursuit of student
satisfaction may well choose to self censor and leave controversial topics out of the curriculum
altogether to prevent potential upset (Williams 187). One professor, in a Vox op ed called I m a liberal
professor, and my liberal students terrify me, validates this idea by writing that he was afraid of his
undergraduate students after a complaint and edited his subject material to avoid upsetting them. He
further acknowledges that his colleagues have done the same for fear of being let go (Schlosser). The
claims for a right to not be offended has essentially created a challenge for universities and their
professors to teach students to be comfortable with challenging

Confederate First Shot
History 3355: US Civil War and Reconstruction
For the assignment I read the article The Confederates and the First Shot. It is a well thought out and
developed argument to the issue of who is really responsible for the start of the Civil War in 1861.
Authored by Richard N. Current, the article seems to be examining the idea that it is Jefferson Davis,
and not Abraham Lincoln that began the war. Why would Richard Current explore this notion? To
begin, if you examine who Richard Current is by profession, you will quickly see that he is a historian
who specializes in Abraham Lincoln. This gives a quick glance viability to the argument, but at the
same time invites the openness for bias or fact picking. Therefore, before reading the article it is ...

With supplies running low, and the enemy being fellow Americans, Major Anderson acknowledged
the request to leave the Fort. However, two aides, James Chestnut and Roger Pryor, who were sent by
Beauregard to negotiate the terms of the withdraw became hotheaded and rejected Anderson s
response. The what if ramifications of the aides has been debated as Current notes in the article, but
the reality of the situation forced Jefferson Davis into aggression against Fort Sumter. This began a
chain of events leading to the first shots. Jefferson Davis knew that he needed to gain the support of
the border states in order to resist the North. Fort Sumter put a faster time clock on the issue. No
longer could the South wait to unify the seceded states. Now Jefferson Davis needed to use a show of
aggression sooner rather than later to gain the border states. This act of aggression happened on a
supply ship attempting to bring food to the Northern Soldiers in Fort Sumter. Lincoln Up to this point
had allowed the actions of the South, and requested only to be allowed the humane act of feeding
starving men. If allowed, the North would avoid aggression on the

Analysis Of The Poem Lessons From The Assembly Line
3 2 Assignment 1 Milestone 1 Submission Writing Plan Draft
When I revisited Some Lessons from the Assembly Line , the author s goal has changed for me. It has
expanded and became broader. Because I see now that the author is trying to show the readers, the
lessons he learned while working his summers away on the factory floor. Adjacent to that propose the
author wanted to show the readers the different ways he learned the lessons, which made him
appreciate his opportunity to go to college. My evidence for this is when the author refers to, These
lessons I am learning, however valuable, are always tinged with a sense of guilt. Many people pass

Copper Nitrate Synthesis Lab Report
In Part C copper seemed to be the least reactive with the nitrate solutions of all of the metals that were
tested. On the other hand, magnesium seemed to be very reactive, as it did have a reaction with each
of the nitrate solutions. In Part B it seemed as though iron had the most violent reaction with
hydrochloric acid. Magnesium is combined with both copper sulphate (CuSO4) and copper nitrate
(Cu(NO3)2). The reactions with both solutions show some similarities such as producing particles.
However with the copper sulphate the solution turns bluer, but in the copper nitrate the magnesium
actually turns into a blue hue. The metals from all three parts if placed in a reactivity series, from most
reactive to least reactive, would look like this:

Horror In Stephen King s Why We Crave Horror Movies
The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and
closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies? Will
we become a gore loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that we love
so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our sense of
normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states in his
essay Why We Crave Horror Movies.
Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King s short story
Strawberry Spring is a perfect example that we use horror to show that...we are not afraid (King, Why
We Crave 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is alike
daring the nightmare (King, Why We Crave 1). In this case, the nightmare is facing our fears,
considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the narrator
in Strawberry Spring is enchanted by that dark and mist blown strawberry spring, and by the shadow
of violent death that walked through it... (King, Strawberry Spring 1). As a matter of fact, we are all
enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King describes this process
as riding a roller coaster by reason of a really good horror movie may... surprise a scream out of us...
the way we may scream when the roller coaster

Some issues addressed by the Beats were spiritual and sexual liberation, legalizing certain drugs,
environmental awareness, opposition to harmful industrialization, and the promotion of peace. Among
the Beats hoping to encourage change through their work were authors Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg,
William Burroughs, Neal Cassady, and Gregory Corso. Writers, such as the above stated, moved away
from the standard structured style of writing and went toward spontaneous and unadulterated prose.
This style of writing allowed the true, underlying thoughts to come out instead of the supposed to s
and the I shouldn t have s . Through their works as well as the works of others, a transition came into
effect for American society...from war and unrest to peace and freedom to do whatever floats your
boat. In his novel, On the Road, Jack Kerouac speaks of his own experiences as a writer on the road
during the Beat Generation. He basically gives the reader the true essence of the Beat life...on the
road, going any way the wind blows. For example, he writes: Filled with dreams of what I d do in
Chicago, in Denver, and then finally in San Fran... I started hitching up the thing. Five scattered rides
took me to the desired Bear Mountain Bridge, where Route 6 arched in from New England. Basically,
this shows the freedom and fearlessness in the attitude of a Beat writer. In general, the Beat attitude
had a huge impact on American society. Their free spirited demeanor sparked

Effectiveness, Pleasure, And Virtue In The Norton Book Of...
In The Norton Book of Friendship, the idea of friendship is defined and explained by many great
philosophers. Among these, Aristotle s piece from Nicomachean Ethics. In this short excerpt, Aristotle
defines and classifies friendship into three main categories: usefulness, pleasure, and virtue. He claims
that in any friendship, one or more of these three motives have to be present. He also says that in order
for a friendship to be successful, it must be reciprocal. In friendships of usefulness, both parties have
to benefit from the relationship. Aristotle states, a friend is loved not because he is a friend, but
because he is useful or pleasant (67). Not only does he claim this to be a type of friendship, but he
goes on to explain that such a friendship is most commonly found in older adults because once one
reaches a certain age men look for the beneficial rather than the pleasure. In some cases, however,
younger ambiguous men tend to direct themselves towards the benefits of a friendship. In contrast,

This is a friendship between good men who are alike in excellence or virtue (Aristotle 67). This is a
friendship held together by no other reason than the fact that one is a virtuous individual. Aristotle
believes it to be the perfect form of friendship (67). This is the longest lasting form of friendship as
there is no other reason for it but virtue, and as long as virtue is there this friendship can last forever.
Aristotle again refers back to time as being a key point in a virtuous friendship. He quotes a proverb
stating that people cannot know each other until they have eaten the specified salt together... The wish
to be friends can come about quickly, but friendship cannot (68). Here Aristotle is saying that one
cannot be true friends with someone out of pure desire, you have to spend years getting to know him

Determining whether triangular arbitrage is feasible and, if so how it should be conducted to make a

To illustrate the feasibility of covered interest arbitrage we assume we have an amount of US
$500,000 to invest.
Investing in a domestic bank deposit at 8% interest ($500,000 x 1.08) would yield $540,000.
Covered interest arbitrage using the British bank: i) Day 1 we convert the $500,000 to pounds using
the current spot rate of the pound, i.e. $1.596
$500,000 ÷ 1.596 = £313,283.21 ii) Sell the £313,283.21 one year forward using the one year British
interest rate of 9.09%: (313,283.21 x 1.0909) = £ 341,760.65 . This is the amount to be received on
maturity including interest. iii) In one year when the deposit matures we fulfill the forward contract
obligation by converting the £341,760.65 to US$ based on the forward contract rate of the pound
$1.58004: (341,760.65 x 1.58004) = $539,995.50
Covered interest arbitrage is not feasible in this case as investing in a domestic bank deposit is slightly
more beneficial.
Covered interest arbitrage using the Australian bank: i) Day 1 we convert the$500,000 to A$ using the
current spot rate of the A$ i.e. $.70
$500,000÷0.70 = A$714,285.71 ii) Sell the A$714,285.71 one year forward using the one year
Australian interest rate of 7%: (A$714,285.71 x 1.07) = A$ 764,285.71. This is the maturity amount
including interest. iii) In one year when deposit matures fulfill the forward contract obligation by

Clayton County Population Health Case Study
Among all the factors that are attributed to population health, the environment is perhaps the greatest.
It is common knowledge in public health that if the physical environment is unhealthy, so is the
population that live there. Even though the many of the environmental issues are being addressed by
the State and County authorities, Clayton County is experiencing a slow rate of change. While the air
pollution particulate matter is declining, it is currently at 13.2, which is higher than the national
average of 9.5, and the 12.8 for the state s average.2 In addition, this county has drinking water
violations and severe housing problems. As a result of these and other environmental issues, Clayton
County ended up with a county ranking of 159 out of 159.1 This is not a good thing for the population

As with the environment, this health factor is also a great indicator of the health status of a population,

consequences and population decline. Therefore, it is paramount that much efforts are put into
lowering infant mortality rates According to State of Health Report, Clayton County ranked high in
infant mortality in the State of Georgia. In addition, it ranked highly in premature births and low birth
weight. The most current data show the infant mortality rate to be 9.2, premature birth at 11.0 percent,
and low birth weight at 10.4 percent among all ages and races.6 These disparities are much greater
among the various age group and race. Because the issue of maternal and child health is such a major
factor in the overall health of the population of Clayton County, the focus will be centered on the

Dehumanizing Death Penalty
The death penalty is proven to not deter criminals from committing a crime punishable by death.
There are many arguments on whether the death penalty should be legal, but the debate boils down to
personal morals. The death penalty is immoral. Criminals will act on their drive, with no thoughts
about future consequences. The death penalty not only hurts the criminal, but it affects the criminal s
family. The family already had to experience what it felt like to see a loved one take an innocent
person s life. This causes emotional unnecessary emotional distress for the family and those close to
the person on death row. Murdering the criminal will only put the family through even more
unnecessary trauma. Furthermore, humans are not pets. The human race should not be able to put
others down in the sense of death. It is dehumanizing for the person sentenced to death and the
executioner. There should not be a job in the United States where, in the job description, it states that

that usually does not happen. Innocent people can be wrongly convicted and executed. Mental

My Brother s Child Protective Services
When my brother, Alex, was two years old, he was taken from my family because the hospital
wrongly accused my dad of shaking Alex at that time. This started with after my dad put Alex down
on our dining room table, still in his car seat unbuckled, and Alex wiggled his way out and fell to the
ground. After this incident, my parents rushed him to the hospital because he started to have seizures.
The nurses later found that my brother had suffered from shaken baby syndrome. They could only link
it to my dad leaving my brother unattended sitting on the dining room table, but earlier in that week
when Alex was in daycare at Primrose and he would not stop cry so the sitter started to shake him
thinking it would calm him down. Once the nurses found out why Alex was having seizures so
frequently they brought Child Protective Services in, to take my brother away and put him in a foster

custody of Alex. They later won custody of him, after six months of fighting with the court. During
this time, since my parents were so focused on getting Alex back, I was either in the care of my

prescription medications that have names or appearances that look similar and can easily confuse

Running Machines For A Machine Shop
If you ve worked in a machine shop at all in the last 30 years, you know that anytime a machine is set
up, the operator is faced with an immeasurable number of choices. Everything about running
machines is about choosing from the many ways of doing it. There is definitely more than one way to
skin a cat when working in a machine shop. For example, think about one of the most simple machine
tools, the tried and true Bridgeport knee mill. We have all used one, maybe for 5 minutes to clean an
edge or for multiple days building intricate parts. Either way, you may not have noticed all the choices
you had when setting up and running the machine. Just to clean up that edge there were decisions
whether to use a vise or a clamp set. Or whether to use a power feed or not. Often you subconsciously
decide what axis you will be cutting with, what sort of tool holder to use, and many other physical
factors. One of the hardest decisions to make in all of this is what type of cutter to use. It seems
simple, many operators just grab an end mill; but to achieve a good quality cut and desired end mill
life, there is much more to it. To find out just how many choices there are, a quick search for ½ square
end mills at MSC brings up over 1500 choices. That s a lot of choices! So what do most of us do? Well
we grab one that looks like something that we have used before. But as we all very well know, doing
things the way we ve always done them is anything but the best way to work in the

Cosmetology Career Research Paper
When I graduate from high school, I plan on going to college for Cosmetology, and if you are not
aware of what that is it is basically when you do hair, and get paid. Cosmetology is a very interesting
career. You will learn many things from taking up that career. Cosmetology is the study and
application of beauty treatment. Branches of specialty include hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics,
manicures and pedicures and electrology. It is usually called a Beautician. A Beautician is licensed to

Introduction
Thesis: Even though the Japanese Americans were able to adapt to their new environment, the
Japanese American internment camps robbed the evacuees of their basic rights.

One of the first actions that evacuees took is establishing school system.
B. The evacuees established self government among themselves.

Japanese Americans had to leave the zone by direct and indirect force, and the government passed the
law which gave the military authority to move Nisei and Issei (34). Along with that, the Executive
Order 9012, passed in March, created the War Relocation Authority (WRA) (35). The WRA s job was
to take charge of the internees after they were moved to the camps (35). The Japanese American
Citizen League (JACL) tried to fight against it. However, because it was too young and they were
afraid that Americans would think they were really spies if they won t cooperate, JACL decided to
follow WRA (36). Furthermore, in March 27, DeWitt issued Public Proclamation Number 4 which
forced persons of Japanese ancestry to stay in military zone 1 after the end of the month, and on
March 27, DeWitt issued Exclusion Order Number 1 in which persons of Japanese ancestry were
moved from Washington to camp in Manzanar, California (37). During the war, there were more than
100 evacuation orders and, through this, the innocent Japanese Americans suffered the consequences
(37). Despite the abrupt news of internment, the Japanese Americans managed to quickly adapt to the
newly provided environment. One of the ways that the Japanese Americans adapted to their new
environment was by forming communities at the camps. This is one of the first things that the
evacuees did at the camps, and they, with WRA, did so by establishing

Symptoms And Treatment Of Clinical Depression
Recently, critics have questioned the ability of SSRIs to reduce the symptoms of clinical depression.
Dr. Hieronymous and his researchers believe high rates of unsuccessful clinical trials additionally fuel
negative critiques. The team from University of Gothenburg, Department of pharmacology set out to
investigate 32 past trials concerning new medications many containing similar compounds to those
found in common market SSRIs such as Paxil, Prozac, Celexa, and Zoloft. Greater than half of the
company sponsored SSRI trials, using common test protocols, demonstrated significant depression
relief regarding active drug versus placebo groups. Their resulting data points out possible depression
measuring defects as a possible source of trial failure, rather than solely SSRI drug ineffectiveness.
The Effect Parameter To prove a drug works, researchers must quantify significant patient symptom
differences before and after active treatment and differentiate these results against placebo effects. The
metric commonly used to measure SSRI impact regarding depressive symptom changes is the
Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), or more specifically HDRS 17. Dr. Max Hamilton s
article A Rating Scale for Depression , describes his depression scale design developed in the 1950s.
HDRS 17 analyses 17 different symptoms associated with depression where each is given a grade
reflecting symptom severity (0 to 4, or 0 to 2). A score of 0 represents an absent symptom while a

This is a race that is categorized by its ability to be completely unpredictable. Why walk and turn left
or right, jog or run, go fast or slow, why do any of the things you do and when you do them? Life is
full of choices, as humans we ve a right to take advantage of the many possibilities. There can t be any
one incentive. As people of many choices, it is us that decide what the temptation to lie is, and there
always is one.
People have made every excuse for their behavior. In which case, a less than truthful approach has
always seemed appealing. They don t want to hurt their loved ones, the truth can hurt, they didn t
think of it as lying at the time, they thought nobody would get hurt, it seemed fun at the time, they
were trying to protect someone, they were afraid, etc. At the core of it all, the only reason a liar lies is
for self preservation. When someone is insincere they are so because they believe that is their only
way out or because that is easier. Lying is never simple.
Who lies? From mothers to fathers, children to brothers and sisters, everybody lies. In a few

How Did The Beatles Influence America
The Beatles, an originally British band caused chaos in the United States during the 1960 s. 4

Roe Vs Rhode Abortion
Forty five years ago, the Supreme Court of the United States infamously declared in the case Roe v.
Wade that abortion was a women s right for the entirety of the pregnancy. 1 This case also limited the
states ability to regulate abortions performed in the three trimesters of pregnancy. Since this decision,
over 60 million unborn children have been killed by abortion.2 By contrast, 1.1 million soldiers have
died in all the U.S. wars combined.3 In a country founded upon the principles of life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness, abortion is one of the greatest downfalls of those principles. It must be
eliminated.

John Stuart Mill Liberty
On Liberty, arguably John Stuart Mill s magnus opus, is principally a criticism against the suppression
of one s individuality by an authoritarian regime or the tyranny of the majority (in the case of
democracies). He thought that so long as one s actions did not cause harm to others, no person nor
government should have the right to prohibit said action. Mill placed a heavy value on the freedom of
expression and dissent, stating if all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person
were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than
he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind (23). He also emphasized that this
belief is not merely justified by personal philosophical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mill s view is that when given the opportunity of exchanging new opinions, individuals will be able to
establish a clearer perception and livelier impression of the truth (24). Going off this notion, the
permission of free expression throughout a society would allow for an entire population of individuals
to begin contributing toward these exchanges of thoughts; consequently, said society would be able to
progress at a quicker rate than if particular beliefs were prohibited or repressed because a larger
amount of participation would lead to a higher chance of a new truth being discovered. Additionally,
free and open discourse could prevent the formation of dogmas about which Mill warns us. He uses
politics as an example in his text, stating that a healthy political system is one which is composed of
both a party of order or stability and a party of progress or reform (58). Without the radical party
(progressives), the party of stability (conservatives) would be able to impose their personal doctrines
onto an entire nation with no need to provide any rational explanation. Freedom of expression permits
individuals to act as a counter voice against the customary beliefs of a community, which would then
force the majority to logically defend these customs, thus eliminating the possibility of dogmas. Mill
cites 19th century religious doctrine as an example of a failure of this process, mentioning how an
English man in 1857 was sentenced to twenty one months imprisonment for saying words deemed
offensive against Christianity (33). Mill claims that this forbiddance of opinions that opposed the
Church can be blamed as the reason why the religion had [made] so little progress in extending its
domain beyond European nations during the eighteen centuries of its existence (53). Using Millian
philosophy, had Christians

eruptions are too dangerous for us to come close to them and scientists are trying their best to interpret
volcanoes and see them in action so that one day every volcanic eruption can be avoided. Although we
are not scientist we can still see a volcanic eruption ourselves using chemicals, we can witness as the
chemical reacts to each other behaving like lava cascading out of a volcano.

The Importance Of The Mosque In The Muslim Community
Family and community assets is anything which is shared within the community by the families in that
community. A shared asset can be a mosque, community center, library, treatment centers, etc. which
is there for the families within that community. Most neighborhoods have a community center which
families bring their children, to play sports and to participate in activities held within the community.
In the Muslim community, the mosques built within that community. Is built for the families within

The Masjid (mosque) t welcomes everyone, day or night, summer or winter, requiring no application

between the laymen and a scholar, nor between a ruler and a subject, nor between a wealthy and a
poor person (Mabdullah 2013) .
Modern mosques have many services in addition to prayer. For the youth, there are courses, activities
for the youth to partake in. Growing up, I attended a nearby mosque every weekend from 9am 1pm for

The European Union And Domestic Legal Systems And The...
The concern here was that the lawyers do not have any certifications, schooling, or experience in
judging cases. In the new ICS proposal there are changed made, as EU Commissioner Cecilia
Malmstrom explains:
the judges will be publically appointed in advance. And, like in courts, you won t be able to choose
which judges hear your case. Furthermore, we will guarantee there is no conflict of interest. Again,
like in domestic and international courts, the judges won t be able to continue any activities which
might interfere with their judicial functions. Finally, I want to introduce an Appeal Tribunal. Just like
in domestic legal systems and the World Trade Organization. (Malmstrom)
This change in the appointment of judges could mean that the public opinion in a case could be more
weighted by shifting the power from the companies to the international system. The European Union
brings the reforms on ISDS as a solution to a system that was broken. But, there is much discussion
about the necessity of a framework like ISDS and the ICS. Especially for high developed countries
there might be less reason for an Investor State court since their court systems are already able to
make unbiased decisions. European commissioner on Trade, Rupert Schiegelmig, responded to this
argument in a debate about the new ICS. Schiegelmich explained that even though these court systems
are highly developed, it is very hard to completely eliminate national bias. He adds to that that

Firstly, the lab was done within a period of 75 minutes. Time efficiency was a factor that could have
been more accurate when creating competent cells. Competent cells are able to take in extra foreign
DNA. The procedure involved timing for series of events. Events such as: both tubes on the ice for 10
minutes, both tubes in the bath for 50 seconds, both tubes on ice for 2 minutes and both tubes at room
temperature for 10 minutes. All of these events could have been done with greater precision. Some of
the tubes may have been exposed to their given environment over or under the necessary time frame.
A source of error is that the ice blocks were not consistent. The procedure asked for crushed ice and
ice cubes were used in the experiment. This could have had an effect on the temperature needed for
the creation of competent cells. On the other hand, an improvement that could be made is pipetting.
0.25mL of CaCl2 solution was put into both tubes using an open pipette. But, it was possible for a
mistake to occur with the chance of air bubbles or imprecision to the required amount. This would
affect the amount of the CaCl2 solution that was needed by under or over pipetting into each of the
two test tubes. Lastly, a source of error may be how spread the substances were amongst the plate. The
greater the distance spread around the surface of the plate, the possibility of more growth and less

Cult of Domesticity
The Cult of Domesticity:
Securing the 19th Century Woman in the Home
During the Antebellum age of America, new values and ideals began to arise. These ideals were
reflected in the households of middle class citizens and grouped together to create the Cult of
Domesticity. The cult helped form the foundation of female inferiority in the male dominated society.
As slaves to the home, women were to uphold morals that were no longer relevant in the new
industrialized world. The ideas that led to this treatment of women were drawn from religion,
scientific studies , and the Industrial Revolution.
The Cult of Domesticity was created to work effortlessly with the middle class, and was also known

Male and female authors in the family s library were separated, unless of course married. Furthermore,
the stork myth and cabbage patch reference about the origin of babies emerged during this time
(Lavender). Many of these changes still exist today and will most likely endure in the foreseeable
future. Submissiveness was perhaps the most feminine virtue expected of a woman. While a man
could be religious or pure, a man could not be submissive. The Bible even states, Wives submit
yourselves unto your husbands as unto the lord (Eph 2: 22 33), (Welter, Cult, 159). Adding to her
submissive state was her clothing; tight corset lacings closing off her lungs and pinching her inner
organs together. Large numbers of under garments and the weight of over dresses limited her physical
mobility (Green, 130). In quite common cases the use of a corset would cause a prolapsed, or sagging,
of the uterus. Physicians alleged that it was possible for the uterus to invert and protrude from the
vagina. One of the most famous remedies of the time was to insert a pessaries, or mechanical supports,
into the vaginal cavity to help support the uterus (Green, 122). Her clothing could be seen as a way to
weaken her already delicate ways. True feminine genius is ever timid, doubtful, and clingingly
dependent; a perpetual childhood, (Lavender, 3). George Burnap describes a woman s weakness in his
novel, The Sphere and Duties of Woman:

The Theory Of International Politics
Theory of international politics is a Classic because it gives a chance to recognise not just the
international system but also history and ethos in context. Gives individuals a chance to think outside
the box and perhaps understand the international state much clearer. Waltz s notes that Polarity is the
only important change in system structure that we can expect under anarchy. Waltz s theory of
international politics is proven to be an unusual powerful volume, creating new discussions and giving
new incentive to existing ones. For example, the book commenced a debate over whether state s
concerns over relative gains impeded cooperation and added momentum to the question of whether
bipolar or multipolar international systems were more war prone (Griffiths, 2007). However, a flaw is
that his theory is too reliant on material understanding of power and misses the social. On the other
hand, regardless of his dependency on material understanding, his theory is still practical and helps to
understand issues that have occurred from a neo realist perspective. To the extent that structural
realism sought to explain the cold war by referring to bipolarity , Waltz s argued that the cold war was
firmly rooted in the structure of post war international politics and will last if that structure endures
(Waltz, 1989). A downfall of waltz s ideology is that it s difficult to settle with the decline in interstate
war and the increase in multilateral co operation among state. Moreover

Net Neutrality Pros And Cons
(Statement and rebuttal) On November, 21 2017, the F.C.C (Federal Communication Commision)
approved a plan made by the F.C.C. Chairman Ajit Pai. His plan consisted in repealing net neutrality
to make the internet a safe and better place. Net neutrality is a principle that states that every app,
website, and platform should be treated equally. Since the F.C.C. approved this plan, people have been
worried about what is going to happen to the internet. People is worried because when the F.C.C.
repealed net neutrality they also repealed all the rules that were part of it. Those rules avoided ISP
(Internet Service Providers) of blocking, and throttling of every website, app, and platform, but there

The Treatment Of Pregnant Women
When it comes to childbirth many women say it is the best experience they go through in life. But
women who are in prison say other wise. Being pregnant and locked up is one of the worse and
hardest experience in life for them. It is not because they are pregnant in prison but it is the treatment
they receive before and after the birth. Some of the women say they get great treatment but others say
the treatment is horrid.People in the real world are debating if the treatment of pregnant women in
prison is proper or if the treatment needs to be changed for the good or for the bad. For starters, 80%
of the women who are in prison is due to the usage of drugs . At least 66 percent of women in prison
have children, and that percentage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The doctors have to see what drug they are on , but the main reason for the testing is to get see if the
women are pregnant or if they have any serious health issues. Once finding out the women are
pregnant the prison systems tell the ladies and schedule them a due date. This is good , but the bad
thing is they are put in the prison with every other women. One would think since they are pregnant
the prison system would separate them but no they do not. Pregnant women have to do every task the
other women do. Like cleaning and cooking. The women that are in the clean task might not realize
this but they are inhaling toxic chemicals. But this does not happen in every prison. For example there
is a prison in Ohio that separates the soon to be mothers from the other inmates. These soon to be
mothers are not in the same conditions as the other women. They are in bright colored rooms and they
read a lot to get ready for when their baby is born (Leone 12). There are only 5 other states in the
united states that have a program like in Ohio (Gormsen 14). Knowing there are only six states that
have this program, that means there are forty four states that have pregnant women working in
extreme conditions and possibly harming their child because of the prison system . Even though it is a
50 /50 chance if the prison the women attends is a good

Abstract: Whereas organizations traditionally approach sustainability from a technical perspective,
and strive to do things better , we argue that the sustainability challenges of our time require
companies to do things differently . This differentiation and market creation strategy will allow
companies to sufficiently leverage sustainability as a business opportunity. We introduce the concept

This research aims to contribute not only to academic literature, but also to business by creating
practical insights for managers to facilitate SI within their organizations. The resulting model serves as
a basis in answering how organizations can become capable of SI.
This paper starts by providing a theoretical background and describing the methodology of our
research. Subsequently we will briefly discuss a number of cases and thereafter present the theoretical
framework and the corresponding organizational capabilities, alongside initial support. We will finish
by offering directions for future research.
1
Theoretical basis
Prior to discussing the relevant theories concerning the development of the capabilities model for SI
we will discuss the changing position of sustainability in an academic and business context.
In the past 20 years, a shift has been observed in the global sustainability agenda from legislation to
sustainability as a competitive advantage. This is illustrated by the significance of an international
agreement such as the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 versus the voluntary carbon neutral commitments that
several businesses (HSBC and BT to name a few) made a mere decade later. The aforementioned
example also demonstrates how public pressure can influence corporate response. The Kyoto protocol
was conceived at a time when governments were held accountable for sustainability issues, whereas
organizations are expected to take their

  • 2. Domestic Violence And Its Effects On Society Murders, rapists, batterers and abusers all have two things in common: they are criminals, and they all take away some part of another human being s life. Both men and women have to deal with the everlasting issue of domestic violence. Defined by domesticviolence.org (2012) as a behavior used by one person in a relationship to control the other , domestic violence can be physical, emotional, sexual, verbal, or even financial. Although the issue of abusers being punished is a significant one, it must be realized that there are victims, and those victims need help. Some countries have no concern or sympathy for victims, as more than twenty countries have no laws against abuse ( Domestic Violence in Developing Countries: An Intergenerational Crisis, n.d.). In many cases, victims should be placed in a counseling program so that they can learn that the trauma they endured was not their fault. Both Sarasota and Manatee counties have shelters for women who have been abused, however, Sarasota County shelters do not offer counseling. Sarasota County is saving money by not having to pay for counseling, but the counseling programs are worth the funds that would have to be put toward them. Domestic violence, when physical, is against the law, therefore, the perpetrator may be sentence to time in jail. However, these violent criminals, most often men, do eventually get out of jail. The victims, who often face guilt and even dependency, usually go back to their abusers, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Mandatory Trigger Warnings At University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2014, the student Senate passed a resolution that called for mandatory trigger warnings. This resolution, if it had become campus policy, proposed that not only students who have been diagnosed with PTSD would be exempt from class for any possibly triggering material but any student who was discomfited by the material (The Times Editorial Board). In other words, students have the choice to decide if they attend lecture due to discomfort scot free. According to NPR author Anya Kamenetz, 51% out of 841 professors reported that they ve used a trigger warning in advance of introducing potentially difficult material (Kamenetz). University faculty and staff have increasingly used trigger warnings to alert students to the possibility that they might be affected or even harmed by potentially traumatic material. In colleges like Oberlin and UCSB, trigger warnings are given in assumption that universities have a responsibility to protect students from controversial or potentially sensitive material. Joanna Williams, director of the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Kent, points out that the entire canon of English literature could contain warnings as to the emotional nature of the content and the issues covered (Williams 17). This has already begun to happen as some students have called for warnings for classic works like Chinua Achebe s Things Fall Apart due its description of racial violence, so that those students who have been previously victimized by racism or domestic violence can choose to avoid these works, due to the possibility of a trigger. Williams also mentions that lecturers driven by the pursuit of student satisfaction may well choose to self censor and leave controversial topics out of the curriculum altogether to prevent potential upset (Williams 187). One professor, in a Vox op ed called I m a liberal professor, and my liberal students terrify me, validates this idea by writing that he was afraid of his undergraduate students after a complaint and edited his subject material to avoid upsetting them. He further acknowledges that his colleagues have done the same for fear of being let go (Schlosser). The claims for a right to not be offended has essentially created a challenge for universities and their professors to teach students to be comfortable with challenging ... • 4. Confederate First Shot History 3355: US Civil War and Reconstruction For the assignment I read the article The Confederates and the First Shot. It is a well thought out and developed argument to the issue of who is really responsible for the start of the Civil War in 1861. Authored by Richard N. Current, the article seems to be examining the idea that it is Jefferson Davis, and not Abraham Lincoln that began the war. Why would Richard Current explore this notion? To begin, if you examine who Richard Current is by profession, you will quickly see that he is a historian who specializes in Abraham Lincoln. This gives a quick glance viability to the argument, but at the same time invites the openness for bias or fact picking. Therefore, before reading the article it is ... Fort Sumter put a faster time clock on the issue. No longer could the South wait to unify the seceded states. • 8. Horror In Stephen King s Why We Crave Horror Movies The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies? Will we become a gore loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that we love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states in his essay Why We Crave Horror Movies. Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King s short story Strawberry Spring is a perfect example that we use horror to show that...we are not afraid (King, Why We Crave 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is alike daring the nightmare (King, Why We Crave 1). In this case, the nightmare is facing our fears, considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the narrator in Strawberry Spring is enchanted by that dark and mist blown strawberry spring, and by the shadow of violent death that walked through it... (King, Strawberry Spring 1). As a matter of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Among these, Aristotle s piece from Nicomachean Ethics. In this short excerpt, Aristotle defines and classifies friendship into three main categories: usefulness, pleasure, and virtue. He claims that in any friendship, one or more of these three motives have to be present. He also says that in order for a friendship to be successful, it must be reciprocal. In friendships of usefulness, both parties have to benefit from the relationship. Aristotle states, a friend is loved not because he is a friend, but because he is useful or pleasant (67). Not only does he claim this to be a type of friendship, but he goes on to explain that such a friendship is most commonly found in older adults because once one reaches a certain age men look for the beneficial rather than the pleasure. Running Machines For A Machine Shop If you ve worked in a machine shop at all in the last 30 years, you know that anytime a machine is set up, the operator is faced with an immeasurable number of choices. Everything about running machines is about choosing from the many ways of doing it. There is definitely more than one way to skin a cat when working in a machine shop. For example, think about one of the most simple machine tools, the tried and true Bridgeport knee mill. We have all used one, maybe for 5 minutes to clean an edge or for multiple days building intricate parts. Either way, you may not have noticed all the choices you had when setting up and running the machine. Just to clean up that edge there were decisions whether to use a vise or a clamp set. Or whether to use a power feed or not. Often you subconsciously decide what axis you will be cutting with, what sort of tool holder to use, and many other physical factors. One of the hardest decisions to make in all of this is what type of cutter to use. • 24. Symptoms And Treatment Of Clinical Depression Recently, critics have questioned the ability of SSRIs to reduce the symptoms of clinical depression. Dr. Hieronymous and his researchers believe high rates of unsuccessful clinical trials additionally fuel negative critiques. The team from University of Gothenburg, Department of pharmacology set out to investigate 32 past trials concerning new medications many containing similar compounds to those found in common market SSRIs such as Paxil, Prozac, Celexa, and Zoloft. Greater than half of the company sponsored SSRI trials, using common test protocols, demonstrated significant depression relief regarding active drug versus placebo groups. Their resulting data points out possible depression measuring defects as a possible source of trial failure, rather than solely SSRI drug ineffectiveness. The Effect Parameter To prove a drug works, researchers must quantify significant patient symptom differences before and after active treatment and differentiate these results against placebo effects. The metric commonly used to measure SSRI impact regarding depressive symptom changes is the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), or more specifically HDRS 17. Dr. Max Hamilton s article A Rating Scale for Depression , describes his depression scale design developed in the 1950s. • 29. John Stuart Mill Liberty On Liberty, arguably John Stuart Mill s magnus opus, is principally a criticism against the suppression of one s individuality by an authoritarian regime or the tyranny of the majority (in the case of democracies). He thought that so long as one s actions did not cause harm to others, no person nor government should have the right to prohibit said action. Mill placed a heavy value on the freedom of expression and dissent, stating if all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind (23). He also emphasized that this belief is not merely justified by personal philosophical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Mill s view is that when given the opportunity of exchanging new opinions, individuals will be able to establish a clearer perception and livelier impression of the truth (24). Going off this notion, the permission of free expression throughout a society would allow for an entire population of individuals to begin contributing toward these exchanges of thoughts; consequently, said society would be able to progress at a quicker rate than if particular beliefs were prohibited or repressed because a larger amount of participation would lead to a higher chance of a new truth being discovered. Additionally, free and open discourse could prevent the formation of dogmas about which Mill warns us. He uses politics as an example in his text, stating that a healthy political system is one which is composed of both a party of order or stability and a party of progress or reform (58). Without the radical party (progressives), the party of stability (conservatives) would be able to impose their personal doctrines onto an entire nation with no need to provide any rational explanation. Freedom of expression permits individuals to act as a counter voice against the customary beliefs of a community, which would then force the majority to logically defend these customs, thus eliminating the possibility of dogmas. Mill cites 19th century religious doctrine as an example of a failure of this process, mentioning how an English man in 1857 was sentenced to twenty one months imprisonment for saying words deemed offensive against Christianity (33). Mill claims that this forbiddance of opinions that opposed the Church can be blamed as the reason why the religion had [made] so little progress in extending its domain beyond European nations during the eighteen centuries of its existence (53). The European Union brings the reforms on ISDS as a solution to a system that was broken. But, there is much discussion about the necessity of a framework like ISDS and the ICS. While a man could be religious or pure, a man could not be submissive. The Bible even states, Wives submit yourselves unto your husbands as unto the lord (Eph 2: 22 33), (Welter, Cult, 159). Adding to her submissive state was her clothing; tight corset lacings closing off her lungs and pinching her inner organs together. Large numbers of under garments and the weight of over dresses limited her physical mobility (Green, 130). In quite common cases the use of a corset would cause a prolapsed, or sagging, of the uterus. Physicians alleged that it was possible for the uterus to invert and protrude from the vagina. One of the most famous remedies of the time was to insert a pessaries, or mechanical supports, into the vaginal cavity to help support the uterus (Green, 122). The Theory Of International Politics Theory of international politics is a Classic because it gives a chance to recognise not just the international system but also history and ethos in context. Gives individuals a chance to think outside the box and perhaps understand the international state much clearer. Waltz s notes that Polarity is the only important change in system structure that we can expect under anarchy. Waltz s theory of international politics is proven to be an unusual powerful volume, creating new discussions and giving new incentive to existing ones. For example, the book commenced a debate over whether state s concerns over relative gains impeded cooperation and added momentum to the question of whether bipolar or multipolar international systems were more war prone (Griffiths, 2007). However, a flaw is that his theory is too reliant on material understanding of power and misses the social. On the other hand, regardless of his dependency on material understanding, his theory is still practical and helps to understand issues that have occurred from a neo realist perspective. To the extent that structural realism sought to explain the cold war by referring to bipolarity , Waltz s argued that the cold war was firmly rooted in the structure of post war international politics and will last if that structure endures (Waltz, 1989). The women that are in the clean task might not realize this but they are inhaling toxic chemicals. But this does not happen in every prison. For example there is a prison in Ohio that separates the soon to be mothers from the other inmates. These soon to be mothers are not in the same conditions as the other women. They are in bright colored rooms and they read a lot to get ready for when their baby is born (Leone 12). There are only 5 other states in the united states that have a program like in Ohio (Gormsen 14). Knowing there are only six states that have this program, that means there are forty four states that have pregnant women working in extreme conditions and possibly harming their child because of the prison system . Even though it is a 50 /50 chance if the prison the women attends is a good ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Chapter 4: Tsunamis Distant tsunami: A series of gravity waves in the ocean originating from a source typically thousands of kilo meters away from the shoreline that is inundated. These waves are produced by the displacement of the entire water column of the ocean by an underwater earthquake, landslide, volcanic eruption, or extra terrestrial impact. Tsunami run up map: A two dimensional representation of the level to which a tsunami has inundated or is projected to inundate a coastal zone. 2. How do natural processes cause a tsunami? What is the primary process? 5. Explain the relationship between plate tectonics and tsunamis. 8. What are the primary and secondary effects of tsunamis? 9. Describe the methods used to minimize the tsunami hazard. Critical Thinking 1. You are placed in charge of developing an education pro gram with the objective of raising a community s under standing of tsunamis. What sort of program would you develop and what would it be based upon? This differentiation and market creation strategy will allow companies to sufficiently leverage sustainability as a business opportunity. We introduce the concept of Sustainable Innovation ... This research aims to contribute not only to academic literature, but also to business by creating practical insights for managers to facilitate SI within their organizations. The resulting model serves as a basis in answering how organizations can become capable of SI. This paper starts by providing a theoretical background and describing the methodology of our research. Subsequently we will briefly discuss a number of cases and thereafter present the theoretical framework and the corresponding organizational capabilities, alongside initial support. We will finish by offering directions for future research. 1 Theoretical basis Prior to discussing the relevant theories concerning the development of the capabilities model for SI we will discuss the changing position of sustainability in an academic and business context. In the past 20 years, a shift has been observed in the global sustainability agenda from legislation to sustainability as a competitive advantage. This is illustrated by the significance of an international agreement such as the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 versus the voluntary carbon neutral commitments that several businesses (HSBC and BT to name a few) made a mere decade later. The aforementioned example also demonstrates how public pressure can influence corporate response. The Kyoto protocol was conceived at a time when governments were held accountable for sustainability issues, whereas organizations are expected to take their
