Experimental Investigation of a Helical Coil Heat Exchangerinventy
Helical coil heat exchangers are one of the most common equipment found in many industrial applications. Helical coil heat exchanger is one of the devices which are used for the recovery system. The helical coil heat exchangers can be made in the form of a shell and tube heat exchangers and can be used for industrial applications such as power generation, nuclear industry, process plants, heat recovery systems, refrigeration, food industry etc. In our work we had designed, fabricated and experimentally analysed a helical coil heat exchanger and a straight tube heat exchanger. From the observations and calculations, the results of the helical coil heat exchanger and straight tube heat exchanger are obtained and are compared. From our obtained results, the helical coil heat exchanger showed increase in the heat transfer rate, effectiveness and overall heat transfer coefficient over the straight tube heat exchanger on all mass flow rates and operating conditions. The centrifugal force due to the curvature of the tube results in the secondary flow development which enhances the heat transfer rate. Comparative study shows that helical coil heat exchanger is having better performance that straight tube heat exchanger.

The solar power tower (also known as 'Central Tower' power plants or 'Heliostat' power
plants or power towers) is a type of solar furnace using a tower to receive the focused sunlight. It uses
an array of flat, moveable mirrors (called heliostats) to focus the sun's rays upon a collector tower (the
target). The high energy at this point of concentrated sunlight is transferred to a substance that can store
the heat for later use. The more recent heat transfer material that has been successfully demonstrated is
liquid sodium. Sodium is a metal with a high heat capacity, allowing that energy to be stored and drawn
off throughout the evening. That energy can, in turn, be used to boil water for use in steam turbines.
Water had originally been used as a heat transfer medium in earlier power tower versions (where the

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

CSP technologies.
CSP technology systems use reflective surfaces to gather and concentrate
unscattered solar radiation to create heat.
There are four main technologies, Troughs and Fresnel reflectors
track the sun on one axis, while dishes and towers track the sun
on two axes.
The requirement for unscattered (“direct normal”) radiation limits csp plants
to certain locations, primarily desert regions with limited cloud cover.
Three of the four CSP technologies use the collected heat to power
conversion.

Linear Fresnel reflectors (LFR)
Linear Fresnel reflectors (LFR) use slightly curved mirrors reflecting the
solar rays on a long, fixed receiver.
Investment costs per mirror area are lower but the annual efficiency
remains below 10%. Saturated steam is directly generated in the receiver
tubes.

Parabolic dishes concentrate the sunrays on a focal
point that is moving together with the dish tracking
the sun, offering the highest optical efficiency on
much smaller capacities (typically tens of kW).
Mass production may allow them to compete with
the larger systems, which benefit from economies of
scale.
Dish systems are less compatible with thermal
storage than other CSP technologies, but require no
cooling water.
