A compressor is a mechanical device that increases the pressure of a gas by decreasing its volume. There are different types of compressors classified by the pressure they can achieve and method of compression. Positive displacement compressors, like reciprocating compressors, work by trapping gas in a space and reducing the volume to increase pressure before releasing it. Rotary compressors use impellers or rotors to continuously compress gas. Compressors have various applications but also limitations related to temperature increases during compression.
