• Developed for the US Army in 1975
• Created by the Center for
Educational Technology at Florida
State University
• An extension of an earlier ID model
– the Five Step Approach
• Expanded the Five Step Approach
with sub-stages at each phase

• Developed by Walter Dick,
Lou Carey, & James Carey,

• Also referred to as the
Systems Approach Model
• Focus is on the delivery of

• Both models have a systems approach to
learning/ID (input, output, process of
curriculum/training/instructional design)
• Both models guide the ID process
• Evaluation is important in each
Fundamental Differences:
• The number of steps/phases
• The type of process (linear vs. iterative)
• When evaluation occurs (at the end vs.
throughout the process)
