2. Comparative
Comparatives are used to show the difference between two objects. To learn
to use these we need to learn four basic rules:
 -ER THAN
 If an adjective has 1 syllable we add the ending –er to the
adjective.
 If the adjective ends in –e, we only add –r (nice-nicer)
Mario is shorter than Luiggi.

3.  -ER THAN
 If a one syllable adjective ends
with a consonant + a vowel +
a consonant you must double
the last consonant and then ad
–er.
Ralph is fatter than Bart.

4.  -IER THAN
 If an adjective ends with a “y”, remove the “y” and
add –ier.
 Exception: shy-shyer
The girl is happier than the boy.

5.  MORE THAN
 If an adjective has two
syllables or more without a “y”
then add the word “more”
before the word.
Lions are more dangerous than
dogs.

6. Superlative
Superlatives are used to show the difference between more than two
objects.
 THE…-EST
 If an adjective has 1 syllable
we add the ending –est to the
adjective.
 If the adjective ends in –e, we
only add –st (nice-nicest)
Maggie is the shortest in her
family.

7.  THE…-EST
 If a one syllable adjective ends
with a consonant + a vowel +
a consonant you must double
the last consonant and ad –
est.
He is the fattest character.

8.  THE…-IEST
 If an adjective ends with a “y”,
remove the “y” and add –iest.
Elephants are the heaviest animals in
the jungle.

9.  THE MOST
 If an adjective has two
syllables or more without a “y”
then add the word “most”
before the word. If the
adjective ends with a “y”, you
will only add the word “most”
if it has three syllables or
more.
He is the most serious man.

Bad - worse than - the worst
Far - farther than - the farthest
further than - the furthest

11. Comparative AS..AS
 AS…AS
 We compare two things which
are at the same level.
Mario is as tall as Lucía.
