Communication privacy management theory explains how people choose what private information to reveal or conceal based on their environment and relationships. It describes how people gradually disclose more personal details over the course of building trust with others like in new romantic relationships. The theory is applicable to many contexts like health, family, and social media, but there is debate around whether it truly qualifies as a dialectic theory. As a new theory, more research can still be conducted on communication privacy management.
