Comets are icy, dusty clumps that originate in the outer solar system. They have elliptical orbits that can bring them close to the sun, where their ice vaporizes to form a coma and tail. Asteroids are rocky remnants from the early solar system located mainly in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter's gravity prevented an asteroid from forming into a planet. Meteoroids are small rocks and dust that become meteors as they burn up in Earth's atmosphere, or meteorites if they survive entry and hit the surface.
