The Relationship Between Parents and Their Children in Silas Marner by George Eliot A child more
than all other gifts
That Earth can offer to a declining man
Brings hope with it and forward looking thoughts. William Wordsworth
The novel Silas Marner was written by George Eliot in 1863. George Eliot s real name was Mary Ann

published under a female name it would be ridiculed and would not sell. This is ... Show more content

Molly decides to take the child to Godfrey and demand shelter and money but dies on the way to let
the tiny child wander into the warmth of Silas Marner s cottage. Silas takes the child and looks after it,
nursing it and returning to his old self, before he was banned from Lantern Yard. Godfrey marries
Nancy Lammeter but fails to have children with her. He goes to claim Eppie but Eppie decides to stay
with Silas, so concluding the fairytale with happiness for the goodies and death and misery for the
baddies when Dunstan Cass is found at the bottom of a lake with Silas money.
Some of the Victorian values that would have influenced George Eliot are the traditional family values
and the role of women in families and society. Women were expected to stay at home and look after
the family. They were not expected to work or do anything to displease their husbands. At the time,
George Eliot was writing her book, the industrial revolution was also taking place and economic and
class values were changing. England was going through a series of tumultuous cultural, social and
economic transformations.
This could be reflected in the seemingly robotic work Silas does. He weaves continually only to save
every penny into a box under his floorboards for him to count and worship.
Silas first sees Eppie asleep by his fire and he sees not a

Determining The Titration Of An Unknown Solution
This experiment explores techniques of a titration, where a solution of a known concentration is used
to determine the concentration of an unknown solution. Titrations are performed with a burette, which
was created by Francois Antonie Henri Descrozilles, which contains the titrant, and a glass container
such as a beaker or flask that contains the analyte.1 The titrant is solution of a known concentration
that is slowly added to the analyte which is solution that is being analyzed to determine the unknown
concentration of the solution. Inside the analyte is also an indicator that changes color near the
equivalence point of titration. Titration have a large variety of uses, such as identifying the amount of
binding proteins in the blood.2 The purpose of this experiment was to become familiarize and learn
how to properly use a burette, pH probe, and pH indicator to effectively perform and examine a
titration. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately, the purpose of this experiment is to determine the unknown concentration of hydrochloric
acid, by performing a series of titrations between sodium hydroxide and potassium phthalate in order
to standardized the sodium hydroxide to be used to identify the concentration of the hydrochloric

phthalate (KHP); during each of the trials, sodium hydroxide was gradually added to the KHP from
the burette to the beaker. After each addition of sodium hydroxide, the pH was recorded in order to

American Dream Motivation
The American Dream
The American Dream is a dream to live in a place where someone s rights and freedoms can not be
taken away from them and where they can achieve their goals without anyone stopping them no
matter what their background is. People achieved the American dream through motivation and hard
work. Although as time passed, they became too lazy to actually work for it. Somewhere along the
way, people began to interpret the American dream as a dream to live in wealth. Because of this, it has
made them think that happiness is defined by how much money they have. They also started to find
ways to get rich quick without working for it. Many people question whether or not the American
dream is attainable or too far fetched. The American ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Chandler V Cape Plc Case Summary
Chandler v Cape Plc [2012] EWCA Civ 525 was a very important decision as it traversed the limits of
common law and the fuelled the debate on how much power and influence the court has in lifting the
corporate veil to support the underhanded claims (due to limited liability) of tort victims.
Consequently, it also led to how the assumption of responsibility is determined given the concept of
limited liability. This assignment is going to analyse the decision of the case, evaluate the reasoning
and its implications, and compare the consequences of a later decision with its precedents. The case,
as per the following evaluation, was found to be pushing the borders of common law, creating both
positive and negative implications. The case was also found to be contradictory to other important
landmark cases, such as Adams v Cape Industries Plc [1990] Ch 433. The Case s Decision Chandler v
Cape Plc [2012] EWCA Civ 525 was a landmark Court of Appeals decision that resolved a tort victim
s claims from a parent company of a subsidiary where the victim suffered an industrial injury. The
court s decision relied on the existence of a duty of care on the part of Cape Plc via an assumption of
responsibility by using the three part Caparo test to determine whether there is a duty of care, and the
second and third parts of the test to determine assumption of responsibility. The decision reads:
The basis on which the judge found there was a duty of care on the part of Cape is on the basis

Hypothesis testing is the process in which an analyst may test a statistical hypothesis. The
methodology used by the analyst is based on the nature of the data used and the main goals of the
analysis. The main goal in this is to either reject or accept the null hypothesis. Through testing, results
will show that someone who may prove one answer, may not mean that answer is actually correct, for
there may be many factors that may change the outcome. For this reason is why researchers the five or
one percent probability rates. In this null hypothesis it will prove that there is no difference between
these variables. With the single variables it is also proven that there is no difference from zero.
Statistical evidence will later prove that if it is indeed proven to be fact or nullified based on the
evidence gathered. A null hypothesis is a process in which research may try to disprove, reject or
nullify the proposed hypothesis. In a study, the researcher may use the hypothesis based on a specific
testable prediction; this is based on a dependent and independent variable in a study. In result, the
hypothesis researched will match what the analyst is trying to prove to be true in the problem. The
first step one must take when testing a hypothesis is restating the question experience analyzed into an
alternative hypothesis and null hypothesis. The following scenario is as follows: Do

Abortion And Birth Control Rights In The Catholic Church.
Abortion and Birth Control Rights in the Catholic Church In our modern world, the topics of abortion
rights and access to birth control seem to be at the top of the list for political strife and conversation;
being pro choice and pro life are labels thrown around between Republicans and Democrats on the
political platform. Despite the topics recent political trend due to our country s new pro life
administration, it has always been a trending topic for women since the 1960s. Monumentally, the
1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade made abortion legal. Despite its legal status, the controversy
over the rights a woman has to choose her stance on abortion and birth control stems further than the
political spectrum; it is often an internal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A 54 year old Catholic woman stated in an interview conducted on the topic of the modernization of
the church insightfully noted that Vatican II allowed for practical changes, like music and singing, and
women allowed into upfront roles as readers, lectors, and Eucharistic ministers, as well as altar servers
in some places. Vatican II aimed to produce a different experience of the mass, but also set out to
reposition the church in a relative relationship with the modern world (Mathis).
With smaller scale changes occurring within the Roman Catholic Church, pro choice Catholics hoped
the Vatican II could also change its views on women s sexual health. Conversation about abortion and
birth control legitimately started within the Catholic Church for the first time in the early 1960s prior
to this era, such topics were not even murmured let alone acknowledged. However, women vocalizing
concerns about sexual wellbeing often poses a problem for the modern religious woman: Catholic
women whose feminist consciousness is raised have been alienated from the Catholic hierarchy by
few issues so much as by the abortion issue. Women are finding it difficult to take a moral stance on
something that is not only a religious problem, but also a social one: Unlike men, who have always
enjoyed virtually total control over their participation in the reproductive process . . . women have
never been able to freely determine [their participation because]

Impacts Of The Shikoku Pilgrimage
Shikoku Pilgrimage
Is the Omairingu project inspiring or ridiculous?
Introduction
The Shikoku Henro is a Buddhist Pilgrimage visiting eighty eight Buddhist Temples in Shikoku to
commemorate one of the most famous Japanese Buddhist Monks Kūkai as known as Kōbō Daishi.
This pilgrimage is a training bringing both physical and spiritual benefits to pilgrims through its
intensive process. Nevertheless, due to the consequences of rapid modernization in Japan, cultural
practices like Shikoku Henro are at threats of erosion because of the increasing concentration of
Japanese people on fulfilling material life rather than enriching spiritual experience. Facing challenges
of being eternally forgotten, Shikoku Pilgrimage needs a greater dynamic to continue preserving its
quintessence. One of the possible solutions that were already implemented is giving birth to the
Omairingu manga, anime and cosplay pilgrimage in attempts to reintroduce this holy practice in a
more pop cultural approach. However, the Omairingu concept is quite controversial among traditional
pilgrims and pop culture fans on how much is too much to deliver sacred images. For this controversy,

The Stress Of Civilian Life
The Stress of Civilian Life
Belinda Maio
Liberty University Abstract
The stress that a soldier faces when they leave the military can be overwhelming. Most soldiers enlist
out of high school or College. They go from living with their parents to living within the fortress of
military institutions. They are given everything that they need while they are in the service. They learn
to live a certain type of life. This life is organized and there is little that the servicemen need to figure
out for themselves. They have everything that they can ever need right on the base where they live.
Then after years of service, they are retired or they do not reenlist. Now this is where their stress
begins. They are faced with now finding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is not a flaw of the military servicemen and woman it is just the way the system is set up.
The Money
Going from the military life to being a civilian can put a financial hardship on the family mostly if the
servicemen are unable to find work when they get out of the military. The family is then forced to go
on a tight budget. In order to understand the hardship on the servicemen it is important to understand
how the military works as far as money, and benefits that the servicemen are given and how they
helped them make ends meet.
In the military, servicemen are used to getting money for their food, rent, and clothing. Every month in
the military depending on your rank, you get B.H.A. This stands for Basic Housing Allowance. The
higher rank you are the more money you get. So in a sense you are living rent free and can possibly
make money if your rent is lower than your B.HA.
Then you get B.A.S which stands for Basic allowance for subsistence. Now this is a set amount. There
is a single amount and a married amount. This money is used for groceries each month. The military
member also gets a clothing allowance. This is set to your rank also. There is also the cost of living
allowance. So if you live in a place which has a high cost of living you would receive an adjustment to
make up for this and so you can afford to live there.
Along with all the money that the servicemen and woman get there are also bonus pays for combat,
hazardous duty pay,

Essay on Repairing Spinal Cord Injuries
Injuries can happen to anyone, anywhere. Injuries affect people s lives as they limit their choices,
temporarily or permanently. Most injuries are not preventable, because most happen unexpectedly. For
example, spinal cord injuries can occur if a person falls abruptly on his/her back and shatters their
spinal cord. Although injuries cannot be prevented, they can be healed. New technologies are under
development to solve major injuries, which do not yet have a cure. One of these major injuries is a
spinal cord injury.
The human body consists of many important systems. The nervous system is one of these that ensure
survival of a person. The nervous system is split into two main parts. The spinal cord and the brain
make up the Central ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This results in either a loss of sensation, or a loss of perception. According to the Rick Hansen Spinal
Cord Injury Registry, vehicle accidents make up 46% of spinal cord injuries. Acts of violence (from
knife wounds or gun shots) make up 11% of spinal cord injuries. Falls and sports injuries make up
24%, industrial accidents (damages from chemicals) make up 5%, and other injuries (such as
inflammation of the spinal cord) make up 14% of spinal cord injuries. The survival rate is reasonably
high for those suffering from spinal cord injuries, but life will never be normal again. Since the
connection between the brain and the receptor or effector is damaged, stimulations may not be
interpreted or signals may not reach the effector. This might result in loss of balance, coordination,
loss of sensation, uncontrolled movements, and paralysis.
It is important to note that nerves in the CNS do not regenerate, while nerves in the PNS do
regenerate. This is why when a person gets a cut; it completely heals in several days. But a person
with spinal cord injury cannot completely heal because spinal cord does not contain neurilemma, a
membrane that promotes regeneration of neurons. It was thought that the neurons would not
regenerate once damaged. However, research has found that they do indeed have the ability to
regenerate if scars do not obstruct the regenerative process. Scars are the result of astrocytes and

Relationship Between The Stamp And Currency Act
Before the American Revolution, Great Britain ruled its colonies in North America. The ruling
government imposed strict taxes via its acts of parliament. Most of these taxes raised revenue for the
British troops and settling debts arising from the Indian and French war (1756 1753). This paper
provides details of the Stamp and Currency Acts.
The Stamp Act
On March 22, 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act which became effective on
November 1, 1765. This act implemented a direct tax requiring the colonies to use stamped papers on
all printed materials (George). The printed materials had a revenue stamp to facilitate tax collection.
Colonies paid the stamp tax using the British currency. The colonies used paper money that could not
pay the stamp tax. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The printed materials included newspapers, legal documents, and magazines among others. On April
1763, George Grenville became British prime minister replacing John Stuart ( Stamp Act 1765 ).
Grenville appointed distributors of the stamp in the colonies, some of them included local colonists.
George Grenville initiated the Stamp Act.
The act faced a hostile reception where residents of major colonies protested against the act and aired
their concerns. Stamp distributors were in serious trouble. For instance, protesters hung Andrew
Oliver on an elm tree on August 14, 1765. He distributed stamps in Massachusetts. Violence continued
in critical colonies such as Rhodes Island and New York.
On October 1765, representatives from different colonies met in New York to discuss on petitioning
the Stamp Act. The meeting was known as the Stamp Act Congress. The representatives provided
proof that the parliament did not have the right to tax them. Meanwhile, protests continued, and so
many people lost their lives ( Stamp Act 1765 ). On March 18, 1766, the royal assent repealed the act.

The Use of Polls to Analyze Public Opinion in Politics Essay
The Use of Polls to Analyze Public Opinion in Politics
Public opinion is defined in the text as the distribution of the population s beliefs about politics and
policy issues (Edwards, Wattenberg, and Lineberry 150). On paper, it sounds so simple; in reality it is
much more difficult to determine. The most common method for ascertaining and consolidating public
opinion has been through the widespread use of polls. Their popularity has steadily increased over the
years. One reason is that they provide an accurate, reliable representation of the opinions of an entire
population and supply decision makers with valuable insight that may be used to determine a future
course of action. However, not all polls are created equal. Polls ... Show more content on

Without a randomly selected sample, the results can only be applied to the specific persons questioned
(Blake 1). This is why results from polls that allow self selection, such as those found on the web, or
in your mailbox, automatically demand a higher level of scrutiny and skepticism.
Wording and ordering of interview questions is another area that demands major attention. Words,
terms and phrases should be stated and ordered in such a way as to create as little room for bias as
possible, and should be presented, in full, with the polling results (Blake 2). Question wording has
been called the biggest source of bias and error in data , and is therefore an aspect of polling that will
always leave room for criticism (Gallup 4). Occasional ill wording of questions is tolerable, if not
unavoidable, as long as it is not obviously meant to tilt the results or prompt a certain response.
However, it is not unheard of nor is it uncommon for such polling practices to occur. Some attempts to
persuade are definitely more malicious in nature than others. This is the subject of the article When
Push Comes to Poll , by Larry Sabato and Glenn Simpson. They outline several types of sneaky
polling practices. But, by far, Sabato and Simpson agree that negative persuasive polls are the worst!
These polls target a specific

Steel is born in the flames and sent out to live and grow old. It comes back to the flames and has a

Attaway moved from the segregated state of Mississippi to the industrialized city of Chicago, Illinois.
The novelist became part of the Great Migration, just as the Moss brothers became part of it when
they escaped Kentucky to work on the steel mills of Pennsylvania. It is apparent that Blood on the
Forge has a distinct connection to Attaway s life. Attaway seeks to tell the plot of the story into five
parts. Part one of the story renders the Life of the Moss brothers before the Steel Mills. Working for
Mr. Johnson as a sharecropper, the Moss brothers were dirt poor, unable to feed themselves and work
the land because of the unfortunate event that killed the Moss brother s mom that lead to Big Mat

The Ethics Of The English Marine Insurance System
1. Introduction
While in recent years, more and more self help motivational books or websites may be encouraging an
All or Nothing attitude towards life in general, one would indisputably agree that when an assured is
taking up a policy, in this context, a Marine Policy, one is trying to protect against risks of the
unknown, and definitely not signing up for a All or Nothing lottery game. However, two judgments in
the English Courts for rules on proximate causation, particularly cases with a combination of perils to
be considered, seemed to suggest the notion of Do you feel lucky today? thus raising doubts on the
justice of the rules on proximate causation in the English marine insurance system.
Hence, this paper aims to discuss in greater depth the reasoning and outcome of the two judgments i.e.
the judgment of the Court of Appeal in The Miss Jay Jay [1987] 1 Lloyd s Rep 32, and of the Supreme
Court judgment in The Cendor MOPU [2011] 1 Lloyd s Rep. 560, to see if they are an arguably
sufficient justification for the view that the English marine insurance system rules on proximate
causation should be repealed and replaced by a system similar to that used in the Nordic Marine
Insurance Plan.
2. Proximate Causation
2.1 Predominant or Efficient Cause
The concept of proximate causation has a critical role in Marine Insurance Law. A connection between
the covered perils and the loss is required to determine causation and therefore liability.

Frederick Douglass And His Life
Frederick Douglass believed that all people were born equal, but he also believed that humans were
not just automatically born free. He deduced that man has the innate instinctive ability to mold
themselves into whoever they wanted to become. So, naturally self improvement and education were
two crucial aspects of Frederick s life. To Douglass the most horrific thing about slavery was the fact
that slaves were totally and completely precluded from and form of education, which prevented them
from improving themselves. Douglass worked exceedingly hard to obtain an education in order to
ultimately become a free man. Although he still had to physically escape slavery his education played
a vital role in his journey to freedom. Frederick ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Only when he witnessed the whipping of his Aunt Hester did he truly realize what true suffering really
was. That event definitely desensitized Douglass to the dehumanization that slaves were subjected to.
His personal introduction to affliction was when he was sent to work for Edward Covey. However, it
was the time spent with Covey that Frederick learned to overcome suffering. Edward Covey was a
poor man with a nasty reputation when it came to the treatment of slaves. Slave owners give Covey
their slaves for one year, during which he breaks the slaves while using them as free labor on his land.
(sparknotes.com). Frederick recalled his time spent with Covey as being the hardest time he had ever
spent as a slave. Douglass was worked to exhaustion and weakened by Coveys harsh punishments.
The more Frederick was dehumanized by Covey the more he lost his drive, desire to learn, and natural
liveliness. Douglass even contemplated committing suicide or even killing Covey, but both thoughts
terrified him beyond belief. Covey lived on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay. It was a frequent thing
for ships to pass by his house. To Douglass the ships with their beautiful white sails symbolized
freedom. Douglass recalled standing on the bank and speaking aloud to the ships, asking them why

An Effective Nurse Client Relationship Essay
The nurse client relationship is said to be a helping or therapeutic relationship in which the main focus
is to enhance the health and wellbeing of the patient. As stated by Harris,Nagy and Vardaxis (as cited
in Mosby s Dictionary,2008) A nurse client relationship can be defined as a therapeutic relationship
between a nurse and client built on a series of interactions and developing over time The relationship
is different from a social relationship in the way that it is only focused on the needs of the
client/patient.The relationship is goal oriented and has 3 phases which correspond to those of
Hildegard E.Peplau which are The Orientation Phase,Working Phase and The Termination Phase.
When discussing an effective nurse client relationship many factors are incorprated in the
establishment of this relationship among these factors are positve regard, trust and interpersonal skills.
People will forget what you say to them. They will never forget how you made them feel This direct
quote from Maya Angelou backs up the thesis that in order to establish an effective nurse client
relationship as a nurse you must display effective interpersonal skills.Interpersonal skills are vital life
skills and when used by nurses help display an ability to communicate and interact successfully with
patients/clients.
In facilitating a nurse client relationship there is a variety of different concepts we must consider and
apply in order for the nurse client relationship to be a helping and

The Silent Killer Short Story
The Silent Killer
Reginald and Timothy
Let me recount to all of you the tale of Reginald. Reginald was a corporate lawyer based in New York
and lived there with his wife and four children. Reginald s life was rich and full of joy and happiness.
Years went by and Reginald retired with his family and moved to the great state of Utah. Months later
Reginald s wife died of cancer and his children all moved away to start their futures at college. At that
point in time, Reginald found himself completely alone, depressed, and unable to leave his house
without assistance. But why is he depressed? Some would argue that he lived a successful life and he
has no reason to be depressed. While this is true some of the time what most people don t see what is
really going on. Reginald often finds himself stilling alone day after day with no one visiting him and
being unable to leave. Reginald is suffering from social isolation however this does not just affect the
elderly or those who don t have family around.
Let s take a look at Reginald s child Timothy. Timothy moved away to college just a few months after
his mother died. He knows a few people and he does is go to class, comes home, and does his
homework. Timothy does this day after day and sits at home every day. Timothy tries to get out of the

Worden V. Edward Gein Case
The lawyer of a man who is being accused of murder contacted me. It was requested that I be the
expert witness and decide if the man, Edward Gein, is mentally fit to stand trial.
(Good) Ed, the second of two boys, was born to George and Augusta Gein on August 27th, 1906.
Augusta detested her husband, and considered him a failure for being an alcoholic who couldn t keep
a job, but she would not divorce him as it would have gone against her religion. The family was living
in La Crosse, WI, but Augusta moved the family to a large farm outside of Plainfield. The farm
became the family s permanent home as it allowed Augusta to keep the boys isolated from outside
influences. George Gein was a raging alcoholic and would physically abuse the boys. ... Show more

The skins from ten human heads were found preserved, and another skin taken from the upper torso of
a woman was rolled up on the floor. There was a belt fashioned from carved off nipples, a chair

table propped up by a human shinbones, and a refrigerator full of human organs. The four posts on
Gein s bed were topped with skulls and a human head hung on the wall alongside the nine skinned

uncovered a soup bowls fashioned from skulls, a shoebox full of female genitalia, faces stuffed with
newspapers and mounted like hunting trophies on the walls, and a mammary vest flayed from the

Why It Is Important To Greek Art Essay
Excuse me, my friends for bringing up this topic at such a busy time, but I feel like this a topic that
must be addressed. For many years, Athens was the place for culture. Lycon, you remember those
days where you would throw those fantastic parties! Meletus father was a playwright. Look where it
brought them. To this assembly. My fellow Athenians, we must support the arts in order to become the
center place for Greek culture, and so we do not become idiots like our neighbors, the Spartans. Those
in poverty need entertainment. Let s walk through the life of a poor person. First, they get up in the
morning, usually very early, and start to head off for their workplace. At their workplace, they toil and
toil away until it is time to go home. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Imagine a paved road, going straight across the world until it reaches the end of the earth and falls off.
There is only one way to go. A person who follows this way will become a follower, and will not be
able to make decisions, and will eventually reach the end of the earth and fall off, his voice never to be
heard from again. Now, imagine that the road has many branching pathways, one leading to
righteousness, one leading to justice, one leading to a naked man taking a shower. These are all
choices that we can make. When a person appreciates music, their mind is opened up so that they can
make decisions that are more thought out. Take Crito for example. As a follower of Socrates, and rich
man, you must have some musical training. He used his musical training to develop a new way of
eating pork skins! Instead of getting his hands dirty with, he used a piece of paper to grab his pork
skin and eat it! However, on a serious note, if music is supported, then we will have many people in
our assembly who do have different views, and who do think their ideas out before presenting them.
That, in turn, will lead to a fairer democracy, for we will have more ideas that are of the

need of help when his baby, Coyotito, is stung by a scorpion. Kino feels his only hope is to find a
pearl beautiful enough to sell. His dream comes true when he discovers a magnificent pearl one

saver. Throughout the novel it becomes apparent the pearl is no where close to a miracle. Kino s life

Jones Blair Case
Problem/Issue
Jones Blair is a paint company headquartered in Dallas, Texas that sells architectural paint. Jones Blair
markets its paint to fifty counties in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and eleven county
Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan areas. Jones Blair has branded itself as having a high end paint
product. Increased R D, material, and labor cost have allowed Jones Blair to have the highest price
among competitors in its service area and still obtain a great amount of business. Jones Blair is
focused on providing architectural paint to a market that is fifty percent segmented, which half
consists of do it yourself consumers and the other fifty percent spilt among professional painters and
government contracts. Jones Blair has enjoyed dollar sales rising at an annual rate of four percent over
the past five years. Even though Jones Blair has enjoyed a successful rise in dollar sales, it has seen a
decline in the gallon volumes in DFW areas due to a rise in competition. Jones Blair is aware that it is
approaching the threshold in its prices. Jones Blair is afraid that once the threshold price is reached,
then the decline in volume sales will lead to Jones Blair unsuccessfully meeting its sales margins.
Jones Blair needs to determine how and where to adjust marketing efforts to raise sales volume
amounts in the DFW and Non DFW areas. Jones Blair currently spends approximately three percent of

The Coherence Theory Of Truth Essay
Section 2.2: The Coherence Theory of Truth
In his book Meditations on First Philosophy , Descartes writes that all beliefs, even the most
irresistible convictions, may not correspond to how the world really is; and this is something that
defenders of the correspondence theory are arguably unable to dismiss. As a result, the coherence
theory takes a different approach and argues that a proposition (truth bearer) is true if it fits or coheres
with a specific set of beliefs (truth maker). These beliefs may belong either to the individual (and
include the laws of logic, for example), to human beings at the ultimate stage of historical
development, or to a system of beliefs held by a God or the Absolute (Walker, 1989). So in the
example where Billy believes that dogs have five legs , his claim can be assessed by considering if this
statement coheres with a specific set of true beliefs. For instance, it may be commonly understood that
dogs have four legs not five, that there has never been a dog with more than four legs, and that no one
apart from Billy has ever claimed that dogs can have more than four legs. Thus, it follows that the key
to determining whether Billy s statement is true or false is internal consistency and logical standards
(Dunwoody, 2009, p. 117).
Even though the coherence theory of truth differs from the coherence theory of knowledge, which
states that a belief is justified if the belief coheres with a set of beliefs that forms a coherent system

Travel restrictions have been placed, parents are keeping their kids home from school, and people are
essentially quarantining themselves amidst the panic. Even recently here at UGA, an event featuring a
guest speaker travelling from Liberia to Athens was recently cancelled by the University for
precautionary measures. Granted, cancelling the trip was indeed justified considering the speaker is
from Liberia, the country facing the brunt of the Ebola virus effects. Regardless, justified or not, sheer
pandemonium has set in, and it looks like it is here for the long haul. The misinformation being
presented on Ebola has, as a result, created a sort of ripple effect across the United States and Europe.
Ebola screenings, for example, are now being performed at airport security checkpoints. A tactic such
as this is a simple knee jerk reaction to the recent news. The screenings themselves have recently been
criticized for being widely ineffective and useless. Researchers recently presented data that claimed
that Airport screening would still let 93% of people with Ebola slip through the cracks, because only a
handful of those sick with the virus would have symptoms when they arrive at the airport (Brodwin).
In short, Ebola screenings taking place at airports are simply gumming up travel and proving to be
doing more harm than

Customer satisfaction is everything. It is through the detailed survey that initiates quality initiatives
and process changes based on this surveys of which the implemented change start at the grass root
levels with staff closest to the area of need identified from these surveys. Arnold Palmer Hospital
further builds the culture of quality by observing the four quality quadrants as analysed by the
executive team namely service, quality, finance and human resources that make the organisation focus
on same goals, vision and to be in the same line to achieve same result of quality culture. So, it would
be very important for me to ensure that the hospital staff cares for the patients, and that the staff is
responsive to the patient s needs. Further, all the four determinants of quality have to be successfully
met of which are:
Reliability: Creating a culture that radically reduces system failure and effectively respond when
failures do occur is the goal of high reliability. The concept of reliability has to be used to make
patient care better. It is used to achieve patient safety, quality, and efficiency goals.

Canadian Identity Stereotypes
Letting Others Define Us
Canadian identity is defined as how Canadians differ from the rest of the world and the uniqueness of
Canadian life. Today, Canada has a variety of stereotypes foreigners associate with Canada and
essentially, Canadian identity is defined based on how others perceive us. Some of the critical ideas
that foreigners typically associate Canada are universal healthcare, multiculturalism, and peace. All
three of these stereotypes based off foreigners impressions of Canada help define Canadian identity.
However, these stereotypes do not appear out of thin air, instead, they come from historical events.
The Citizenship Act, UN Peacekeeping Mission during the Suez Crisis, and the Medical Care Act all
contributed in the construction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It simply provided an easy way to define the lives of people living in Canada as Canadian citizens.
The Citizenship Act of 1947 allowed citizens to become subjects of Canada rather than subjects of
Britain. It allowed anyone of any racial or ethnic background to apply for citizenship, free of
discrimination. It was meant to create a sense of unity among Canadians while relieving racial or
ethnic tensions. This was significant in defining not only Canadian citizens, but also led to Canada s
multicultural society and the Multiculturalism Act in 1971. From a foreigners perspective, this act was
perceived as an attempt of removing discrimination and racism in Canada. Due to these anti
discriminatory rules of the act, foreigners inferred that Canada was starting to minimize and remove
racial discrimination to allow everyone to be a Canadian citizen. In simplified terms, Canada wanted
to promote multiculturalism instead of discriminating against everyone who was not British. Thus,
foreigners defined multiculturalism as a part of Canadian identity. This aspect of national identity only
strengthened with time as more and more events promoted multiculturalism for Canada to become the
multicultural country today. In addition, it is seen today that many immigrants choose to come to
Canada due to the culturally diverse, welcoming society here. This further proves that foreigners
believe that multiculturalism is a big part of Canada, defining its national identity. In summary, the
Citizenship Act marked the beginning of multiculturalism in Canada and sparked more events
promoting multiculturalism. This resulted in foreigners defining a stereotype of multiculturalism as an
important aspect of Canada s national identity

The Theory Of Self And Memory
Personal identity has been, and will arguably remain, a major area of debate and discussion amongst
philosophers, both in Western and Eastern branches of academia. Indeed, this idea that personal
identity more commonly referred to as the self remains constant, despite any and all qualitative
changes that can occur to a person, has left many philosophers ever so puzzled. Nevertheless, four
main theories have been developed in an effort to best explain both the existence of the self and how it
can persist through any period of time. Some follow on Rene Descartes theory, where the soul can be
assigned the role of the self. Others prefer the one John Locke had proposed, where the self and
memory are related. Others still argue that animalism, the view that the person body and the self are
the same entity, is a better explanation. Then there are those who follow on the Buddhist teachings of
the Anatta, a theory that argues against the very idea of the self. Amongst these four main theories, the
Buddhist theory of Anatta, the idea that the self does not exist, is arguably a better explanation of the
self, for it is less problematic than the others can be.
The initial problem in theorizing over the matter of the self is found in the idea of individual
continuity, of persistence in more than just qualitative features over time. In the most intuitive of
senses, the idea of the self can be simplified to terms of the persistence of personal identity over any
period of time.

Comparing the Living Dead in James Joyce s The Dead and...
Dubliners and The Living Dead
In his work The Dead, James Joyce utilizes his character Michael Furey, Gretta Conroy s deceased
love from her youth, as an apparent symbol of how the dead have a steadfast and continuous power
over the living. The dominant power which Michael maintains over the protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, is
that Gabriel is faced with the intense question of whether his wife, Gretta Conroy, loves him and
whether he honestly loves her. Joyce provides substantial information to persuade one to believe that
Gabriel does truly love his wife. Even though it is made evident to the reader that Gabriel possesses
such devotion and adoration for Gretta, Michael diverts Gabriel s confidence in his love, causing

Gabriel becomes distraught at the revelation of her statement. Joyce describes Gabriel s anguished
state, Generous tears filled Gabriel s eyes. He had never felt like that himself towards any woman, but
he knew that such a feeling must be love (Joyce 182). Gabriel is perplexed as to why, if Gretta loves
him so much, she still possesses memories of her first love. He also wonders why this important detail
of Gretta s life was not brought to his attention at an earlier point. Gabriel s recognition that he has
been excluded from what he believes to be the deepest experience of Gretta s life now becomes the
deepest experience of his life. Gretta s reaction to his questions about her first love causes Gabriel to
become overwhelmed by Michael Furey s control over him.
Gabriel by his ideas, his tastes, and his sensitivities has been isolated from others but always found
solace in his self esteem. Michael Furey has destroyed this. The tears gathered more thickly in his eyes
and in the particular darkness he imagined he saw a young man standing under a dripping tree (Joyce

Gabriel, and his influence can in no way be obliterated. Joyce depicts the power Michael has over

Some of the Victorian values that would have influenced George Eliot are the traditional family values and the role of women in families and society. Chandler V Cape Plc Case Summary Chandler v Cape Plc [2012] EWCA Civ 525 was a very important decision as it traversed the limits of common law and the fuelled the debate on how much power and influence the court has in lifting the corporate veil to support the underhanded claims (due to limited liability) of tort victims. Consequently, it also led to how the assumption of responsibility is determined given the concept of limited liability. This assignment is going to analyse the decision of the case, evaluate the reasoning and its implications, and compare the consequences of a later decision with its precedents. The case was also found to be contradictory to other important landmark cases, such as Adams v Cape Industries Plc [1990] Ch 433. The Case s Decision Chandler v Cape Plc [2012] EWCA Civ 525 was a landmark Court of Appeals decision that resolved a tort victim s claims from a parent company of a subsidiary where the victim suffered an industrial injury. Vatican II aimed to produce a different experience of the mass, but also set out to reposition the church in a relative relationship with the modern world (Mathis). Most soldiers enlist out of high school or College. They go from living with their parents to living within the fortress of military institutions. They are given everything that they need while they are in the service. They learn to live a certain type of life. This life is organized and there is little that the servicemen need to figure out for themselves. They have everything that they can ever need right on the base where they live. This is not a flaw of the military servicemen and woman it is just the way the system is set up. The Money Going from the military life to being a civilian can put a financial hardship on the family mostly if the servicemen are unable to find work when they get out of the military. The family is then forced to go on a tight budget. In order to understand the hardship on the servicemen it is important to understand how the military works as far as money, and benefits that the servicemen are given and how they helped them make ends meet. In the military, servicemen are used to getting money for their food, rent, and clothing. Every month in the military depending on your rank, you get B.H.A. This stands for Basic Housing Allowance. The higher rank you are the more money you get. So in a sense you are living rent free and can possibly make money if your rent is lower than your B.HA. Then you get B.A.S which stands for Basic allowance for subsistence. Now this is a set amount. There is a single amount and a married amount. This money is used for groceries each month. The military member also gets a clothing allowance. This is set to your rank also. There is also the cost of living allowance. So if you live in a place which has a high cost of living you would receive an adjustment to make up for this and so you can afford to live there. Along with all the money that the servicemen and woman get there are also bonus pays for combat, hazardous duty pay, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is important to note that nerves in the CNS do not regenerate, while nerves in the PNS do regenerate. This is why when a person gets a cut; it completely heals in several days. But a person with spinal cord injury cannot completely heal because spinal cord does not contain neurilemma, a membrane that promotes regeneration of neurons. The ruling government imposed strict taxes via its acts of parliament. Most of these taxes raised revenue for the British troops and settling debts arising from the Indian and French war (1756 1753). This paper provides details of the Stamp and Currency Acts. The Stamp Act On March 22, 1765, the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act which became effective on November 1, 1765. The Use of Polls to Analyze Public Opinion in Politics Essay The Use of Polls to Analyze Public Opinion in Politics Public opinion is defined in the text as the distribution of the population s beliefs about politics and policy issues (Edwards, Wattenberg, and Lineberry 150). On paper, it sounds so simple; in reality it is much more difficult to determine. The most common method for ascertaining and consolidating public opinion has been through the widespread use of polls. Their popularity has steadily increased over the years. One reason is that they provide an accurate, reliable representation of the opinions of an entire population and supply decision makers with valuable insight that may be used to determine a future course of action. Words, terms and phrases should be stated and ordered in such a way as to create as little room for bias as possible, and should be presented, in full, with the polling results (Blake 2). Question wording has been called the biggest source of bias and error in data , and is therefore an aspect of polling that will always leave room for criticism (Gallup 4). Occasional ill wording of questions is tolerable, if not unavoidable, as long as it is not obviously meant to tilt the results or prompt a certain response. • 26. The Coherence Theory Of Truth Essay Section 2.2: The Coherence Theory of Truth In his book Meditations on First Philosophy , Descartes writes that all beliefs, even the most irresistible convictions, may not correspond to how the world really is; and this is something that defenders of the correspondence theory are arguably unable to dismiss. As a result, the coherence theory takes a different approach and argues that a proposition (truth bearer) is true if it fits or coheres with a specific set of beliefs (truth maker). These beliefs may belong either to the individual (and include the laws of logic, for example), to human beings at the ultimate stage of historical development, or to a system of beliefs held by a God or the Absolute (Walker, 1989). So in the example where Billy believes that dogs have five legs , his claim can be assessed by considering if this statement coheres with a specific set of true beliefs. For instance, it may be commonly understood that dogs have four legs not five, that there has never been a dog with more than four legs, and that no one apart from Billy has ever claimed that dogs can have more than four legs. Thus, it follows that the key to determining whether Billy s statement is true or false is internal consistency and logical standards (Dunwoody, 2009, p. 117). Even though the coherence theory of truth differs from the coherence theory of knowledge, which states that a belief is justified if the belief coheres with a set of beliefs that forms a coherent system (Audi, ... Viewership was steadily increasing, and the amount of family time spent in front of the television screen was steadily declining. This was mainly due to the new format of television, shows were no longer for all viewers, but instead had target audiences; MTV was actually starting to show music videos, reality television was a new a popular form of television, and Saturday morning cartoons were a part of every child s weekly routine. Another reason the messages is silently displayed on the screen, is if there isn t too much attention drawn to that message, it won t bring about too much discussion; because they never mention which essential vitamins and minerals the children are ... Arnold Palmer Hospital further builds the culture of quality by observing the four quality quadrants as analysed by the executive team namely service, quality, finance and human resources that make the organisation focus on same goals, vision and to be in the same line to achieve same result of quality culture. So, it would be very important for me to ensure that the hospital staff cares for the patients, and that the staff is responsive to the patient s needs. Further, all the four determinants of quality have to be successfully met of which are: Reliability: Creating a culture that radically reduces system failure and effectively respond when failures do occur is the goal of high reliability. The concept of reliability has to be used to make patient care better. It is used to achieve patient safety, quality, and efficiency goals. 1. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Canadian Identity Stereotypes Letting Others Define Us Canadian identity is defined as how Canadians differ from the rest of the world and the uniqueness of Canadian life. Today, Canada has a variety of stereotypes foreigners associate with Canada and essentially, Canadian identity is defined based on how others perceive us. Some of the critical ideas that foreigners typically associate Canada are universal healthcare, multiculturalism, and peace. All three of these stereotypes based off foreigners impressions of Canada help define Canadian identity. However, these stereotypes do not appear out of thin air, instead, they come from historical events. The Citizenship Act, UN Peacekeeping Mission during the Suez Crisis, and the Medical Care Act all contributed in the construction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It simply provided an easy way to define the lives of people living in Canada as Canadian citizens. The Citizenship Act of 1947 allowed citizens to become subjects of Canada rather than subjects of Britain. It allowed anyone of any racial or ethnic background to apply for citizenship, free of discrimination. It was meant to create a sense of unity among Canadians while relieving racial or ethnic tensions. This was significant in defining not only Canadian citizens, but also led to Canada s multicultural society and the Multiculturalism Act in 1971. From a foreigners perspective, this act was perceived as an attempt of removing discrimination and racism in Canada. Due to these anti discriminatory rules of the act, foreigners inferred that Canada was starting to minimize and remove racial discrimination to allow everyone to be a Canadian citizen. In simplified terms, Canada wanted to promote multiculturalism instead of discriminating against everyone who was not British. Thus, foreigners defined multiculturalism as a part of Canadian identity. This aspect of national identity only strengthened with time as more and more events promoted multiculturalism for Canada to become the multicultural country today. In addition, it is seen today that many immigrants choose to come to Canada due to the culturally diverse, welcoming society here. This further proves that foreigners believe that multiculturalism is a big part of Canada, defining its national identity. In summary, the Citizenship Act marked the beginning of multiculturalism in Canada and sparked more events promoting multiculturalism. This resulted in foreigners defining a stereotype of multiculturalism as an important aspect of Canada s national identity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 32. The Theory Of Self And Memory Personal identity has been, and will arguably remain, a major area of debate and discussion amongst philosophers, both in Western and Eastern branches of academia. Indeed, this idea that personal identity more commonly referred to as the self remains constant, despite any and all qualitative changes that can occur to a person, has left many philosophers ever so puzzled. Nevertheless, four main theories have been developed in an effort to best explain both the existence of the self and how it can persist through any period of time. Some follow on Rene Descartes theory, where the soul can be assigned the role of the self. Others prefer the one John Locke had proposed, where the self and memory are related. Others still argue that animalism, the view that the person body and the self are the same entity, is a better explanation. Then there are those who follow on the Buddhist teachings of the Anatta, a theory that argues against the very idea of the self. Amongst these four main theories, the Buddhist theory of Anatta, the idea that the self does not exist, is arguably a better explanation of the self, for it is less problematic than the others can be. The initial problem in theorizing over the matter of the self is found in the idea of individual continuity, of persistence in more than just qualitative features over time. In the most intuitive of senses, the idea of the self can be simplified to terms of the persistence of personal identity over any period of time. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Comparing the Living Dead in James Joyce s The Dead and... Dubliners and The Living Dead In his work The Dead, James Joyce utilizes his character Michael Furey, Gretta Conroy s deceased love from her youth, as an apparent symbol of how the dead have a steadfast and continuous power over the living. The dominant power which Michael maintains over the protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, is that Gabriel is faced with the intense question of whether his wife, Gretta Conroy, loves him and whether he honestly loves her. Joyce provides substantial information to persuade one to believe that Gabriel does truly love his wife. Even though it is made evident to the reader that Gabriel possesses such devotion and adoration for Gretta, Michael diverts Gabriel s confidence in his love, causing Gabriel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gabriel becomes distraught at the revelation of her statement. Joyce describes Gabriel s anguished state, Generous tears filled Gabriel s eyes. He had never felt like that himself towards any woman, but he knew that such a feeling must be love (Joyce 182). Gabriel is perplexed as to why, if Gretta loves him so much, she still possesses memories of her first love. He also wonders why this important detail of Gretta s life was not brought to his attention at an earlier point. Gabriel s recognition that he has been excluded from what he believes to be the deepest experience of Gretta s life now becomes the deepest experience of his life. Gretta s reaction to his questions about her first love causes Gabriel to become overwhelmed by Michael Furey s control over him. Gabriel by his ideas, his tastes, and his sensitivities has been isolated from others but always found solace in his self esteem. Michael Furey has destroyed this. The tears gathered more thickly in his eyes and in the particular darkness he imagined he saw a young man standing under a dripping tree (Joyce 182). Though Michael is certainly dead in body, he lives on in the memories of both Gretta and Gabriel, and his influence can in no way be obliterated. Joyce depicts the power Michael has over Gabriel, A vague terror seized Gabriel... as if... some impalpable and vindictive being was coming against him, gathering forces in its vague world (Joyce ...
