How To Invade Iraq
Support To invade Iraq Hindsight makes everyone geniuses. With hindsight, more people would have
bought shares in Microsoft when it first came out. Ditto for Amazon, Facebook, something called
Berkshire Hathaway, and shares in, what was then, a small retailer based in Arkansas Walmart. We do
not have hindsight. We can not guarantee success in everything we do. If the Iraq War only lasted 100
days, we would not have argued about whether there were weapons of mass destruction. It did not, on
both counts. It lasted 3,195 days from March 20, 2003 till December 18, 2011.
If we look back on the events surrounding the war, we can understand how it happened. Surprisingly,
however, when we understood how, it was easier to understand and support the why. In March 2003,
the United States initiated a preemptive war on Iraq. Iraq had nuclear capability termed weapons of
mass destruction . Iraq had previously used chemical weapons on Iran and on its own people. Iraq
supported terrorists including the architect of the 911 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As for why, we can understand how brutal the Iraq regime appeared, and in a world where threats
grow, the Iraq War was a preemptive war and an unpopular war but not a war without cause.
Oppose Not to invade Iraq There are those who say that Saddam Hussein was an evil man and the
world is better off without him. There are those who support the Iraq War and say the prospect that
Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction was sufficient grounds for the invasion. There are
those who say that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden had nearly a decade long relationship and
possible alliance and that justified the U.S. Invasion of Iraq. Whether you support those views or not,
it does not justify the following costs:
4,488: U.S. service personnel killed,
32,223: U.S. troops injured,
134,000: Iraqi civilians killed,

Failures Of The Puritan Society
Seventeenth century Puritans had several aspirations, successes, and failures when it came to creating
a model society. They had many successes in their society, some examples are their education system,
their advancements in equality for women, and the way they created a tight knit close society.
Although they had many achievements, the Puritans also did fall short in many aspects of their
society. They ultimately did fail at their perfect society, and that is a very important aspect since that
was their main goal. They also were very strict about their policies regarding the church. Once the
generations progressed, they had to create new rules to allow people basic religious rights such as
baptism. They also fused church and state, which was necessary in a society such as this, but it
ultimately hindered progression such as allowing non church members to vote. As the years
progressed more and more non Puritans entered the Puritan society, this hindered society because
eventually the small majority was making the most riveting decisions. Ultimately the Puritans had
both failures and successes when attempting a model society, but the weight of the failures simply
outweighed the successes. Seventeenth century Puritans had a few specific goals when it came to the
creation of their model society. Most importantly, they wanted every member of the community to be
one of the elect. The elect were those who had received salvation and would in turn make it to heaven.

Who Is Willa Cather s Admiration In My Antonia
Willa Cather has a strong admiration for the character Antonia in My Antonia. The introduction of My
Antonia states that the narrator and Jim were to write down all they knew of her in order to maybe get
a picture of her. I believe this strong admiration is because of the characteristics that are shown by
Antonia throughout the story. She is a hardworking girl that belongs to a Bohemian family who has
started a farm in Nebraska. Not only is she hard working but throughout the story she shows
characteristics of being strong both inside and out. Also, it is very apparent that she wants to be
independent and make her own decisions. I think Willa Cather admires the character Antonia because
she can, in a way, reflect on her characteristics

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Moles
Moles are disturbing particularly in the event that they are on obvious parts of our body. Once in a
while they vanish with age, however for the most part they remain with us as an ugly stamp on our
skin. Accordingly we generally pay special mind to approaches to evacuate them.
Before going to talk about how to evacuate moles let us first get a fast thought regarding what moles
are and why or where they create?
Moles are little hued spots on the skin made up of cells called Melanocytes. The logical name for
moles is melanocytic naevi. Moles are regularly brownish in colour albeit some might be darker or
skin hued. They can be level or raised, smooth or harsh, and some have hair developing from them.
Moles are typically roundabout or oval with a smooth edge.
Moles can change in number and appearance. Some blur away after some time, frequently without you
understanding. They additionally some of the time reacts to hormonal changes, for instance amid:
pregnancy when they may get slightly darker
teenage years when they increase in number

Dna Editing System For A Type II Crispr System Mechanism
CRISPR/Cas9 DNA editing system is a prokaryotic immune system that becomes resistant to foreign
genetics such as plasmids. CRISPR stands for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic
Repeats, which are prokaryotic DNA strands that have a short repetition base sequence. Cas9 is a
nuclease enzyme that is used to cut into DNA strands that are associated with CRISPR type II.
CRISPR/Cas9 system has several advantages when using this technology in the biological and
biomedical sciences. It also has a few disadvantages that cause concerns when using this system in the
medicine field. However, before all of this can be discussed, a depth of what CRISPR/Cas9 is and
where it comes from and why is it important to the biology field.
There are many highly diverse Cas (CRISPR associated) proteins but only one that is mainly used,
which is Cas9.1 Which Cas9 derivative is found on the gRNA that contains plasmid, which are
associated with CRISPRs type II in the bacterial immune system. Cas9 is an important asset to a type
II CRISPR system mechanism that is required for gene silencing. Cas9 protein engages in the
processing of crRNA and is also responsible for eliminating the target DNA in the type II CRISPR
system.1 Cas9 function as an RNA guide for the DNA endonuclease enzyme that is involved with
CRISPR adaptive immune system.

Not True Love in William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet Essay
Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet popularly considered by many to be the quintessential love story of
all time is a play that we are all familiar with in one way or another. Whether it be through the plethora
of portrayals, adaptations and performances that exist or through your own reading of the play,
chances are you have been acquainted with this tale of tragic love at some point in your life. Through
this universal familiarity an odd occurrence can be noted, one of almost canonical reverence for the
themes commonly believed to be central to the plot. The most widely believed theme of Romeo and
Juliet is that of the ideal love unable to exist under the harsh social and political strains of this world.

However, he is the one who seems to have the faulty reasoning and who relies on fancy words to
convey his otherwise weak emotions. It is the attention he receives that causes me to scrutinize him
with a keener eye; after all, we must hold those we revere most highly accountable for their actions . .
.
From the moment we first hear about Romeo, it is in the context of his suffering at the hands of love.
Romeo s father, Montague, perplexed by his son s behavior states that, Many a morning hath he there
been seen, / With tears augmenting the fresh morning s dew, / Adding to clouds more clouds with his
deep sighs (1.1.124 26). While this may be the first time we encounter Romeo s melancholy humour,
it certainly isn t the last. In fact, one of the primary sources of our infatuation with Romeo rests in our
sympathy for him. From the very start this poor boy is plagued by affections for girls that fate, it
seems, will not let him be with. At first, it s Rosaline, a girl who has sworn that she will still live
chaste (1.1.210), a vow that sets Romeo reeling and complaining because from love s weak childish
bow she lives unharmed (1.1.204). His depression over Rosaline is enough to draw the attention of his
father, Montague, who has observed that Romeo shuts himself up in his room all day in order to
wallow in the darkness. These are the actions of someone who is undeniably quite

Preparing to Conduct Business Research Part 1
Introduction
In this paper Team C will discuss a situation within a company that requires research, hypothesis and
variable. We will also go over the ethics that need to be taken into account. The situation that is being
faced is the employee turnover rate is too high. This is a significant problem because it is causing the
company to lose money each time they have to train a new employee. This is a great situation to
research and find out what is going on, and figure out how it can be changed. The research for this will
figure out why the situation seems to be that there is a high ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another may be training and development opportunities. The variables that we are looking for in this
study will in some way show how to increase employee retention. When dealing with employee
retention issues there may be more than one solution to fixing the issue. That is why it is important to
ask the right questions during an exit interview as well as in any other form of interview or survey.
Ethical Considerations
In the issue of poor employee retention research is definitely a good way to figure out what the issues
are and how to combat them. There are however, ethical matters that should be considered during the
research process. Making sure that employees confidentiality is kept during the process is very
important, also you want to make sure that race is not involved. It is also important to make sure that
the results do not interfere with the employees that are currently employed within the company. It is
important to keep the objectives clear, and to make sure that proper consent is given when necessary.
Making sure that ethical considerations are taken into account are very important during any business
research including finding out why there is poor employee retention.
Conclusion
In this paper Team C has discussed the issue of poor employee retention concluding in a high
employee turnover rate. This is an issue that can be common among some companies and that is a
great example of

Comparison Of Sympathy And Caged Bird
There have been many injustices throughout history, like slavery and discrimination; this is the time
where two poems take place; Sympathy and Caged Bird . Maya Angelou and Paul Laurence Dunbar
describe how it is like to be discriminated and separated, through their poems Sympathy and Caged
Bird . However, they did not convene to generate these poems. Dunbar innovated the metaphor of a
caged bird and discrimination. In her poem Caged Bird debuted in 1969, Maya Angelou writes about a
character that is a caged bird who cannot fly and is separated from other birds. Paul Laurence Dunbar
also writes of the struggle of a caged bird, who cannot become free even after eating the bars of his
cage, in his poem Sympathy broached in 1889. Both writers explain the situations of caged birds and
their desires to be free. In the poems Sympathy and Caged Bird , caged birds both sing for freedom,
however, one is more confined than the other; Caged Bird is more meaningful, because the bird is
unable to fly, and is emotionally affected by that.

The bird in Sympathy is able to fly. I know why the caged bird beats his wing/...for he must fly back
to his perch and cling (8, 10). The caged bird has enough freedom to be able to fly and try to break
down his cage. Therefore, the bird has more freedom. In conflict, the bird in Caged Bird has less
freedom and is more confined in his cage. But a bird that stalks/ down his narrow cage/ can seldom
see through his bars of rage (8 11). The bird cannot fly in his very small cage; this makes attacking his
cage very difficult. On the contrary, the caged bird in Sympathy can fight his cage, while the bird in
Caged Bird is diffident and doesn t have enough space to do so. The bird in Sympathy is able to fly
and fight the bars of misery; while the bird in Caged Bird cannot do because his cage is

Catalase And Hydrogen Peroxide Reaction Lab
Investigating the Effects of Temperature, Inhibitors, Enzyme, and Substrate Concentration on the
Velocity of Catalase Hydrogen Peroxide Reactions
By Linsey Coles
Abstract
This lab served to demonstrate the catalase catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water
and oxygen gas under different reaction conditions. This included the investigation of the effects of
enzyme concentration, temperature, substrate concentration, and presence of inhibitors on the initial
reaction velocity. Because this catalase hydrogen peroxide reaction is important in biological systems,
this lab demonstrates the importance of maintaining homeostasis in cells to provide optimal conditions
for these reactions. The experiments were carried out using a eudiometer and primarily concluded that
reaction rate is dependent on temperature, substrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Exp. Experiment s Second Introduction
This lab served to demonstrate the reaction between the enzyme catalase and hydrogen peroxide under
different environmental conditions and the addition of an inhibitor. This is an important reaction in
biological systems. Hydrogen peroxide serves many important roles in the body such as acting in
signaling between cells, controlling inflammation at sites of injury (Halliwell et al. 2000), and cardio
myogenesis (Seonmin et al. 2011). While important, hydrogen peroxide in excess can break down to
hydroxide radicals and cause damage to DNA and other tissues (Halliwell et al. 2000). Because of
this, hydrogen peroxide in cells must be regulated and this is done by catalase. Catalase is an enzyme
that catalyzes the dissociation of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas, preventing the
formation of oxidizing hydroxide radicals (Yang et al. 2002). It does this by binding to the hydrogen
peroxide.

Renaissance Humanism Research Paper
When you hear the word Humanism you might automatically thing about current definition of
Humanism. This particular essay instead will discuss Renaissance Humanism instead. In this essay, I
will talk about several important facts around Humanism. First, I will define what Humanism is.
Second, I will compare and contrast the core assumptions and attitudes that Humanism brings to
society, culture, and the universe with the assumptions and attitudes that prevailed in Western Europe
before the Renaissance. Last, how did Humanism pose a challenge to the traditional worldview of the
Catholic Church? Renaissance humanism came to be around the thirteenth century during the
intellectual movement which came to dominate European thought during the Renaissance. ... Show

Scholastics emphasized logic, reason and dialectic where Humanists emphasized the study of the
classics and language (Ridenour, 2018). Scholasticism focused on training people who would was as
theologians, on the other hand, humanism focused on creating people who would be ideal citizens in
whatever domain their work was in. The most distinctively difference between the two was in the relm
of the supernatural. In scholasticism, faith in supernatural things was an intrinsic understanding,
whereas, humanism rejects the supernatural as a basis for study of work but placed emphasis on
human reasoning (Ridenour, 2018). Scholasticism and humanism are both historical philosophies that
influenced particular university level teaching methods. It was a school of thought that tried to bring
the ideas of Aristotle and the ideas of the church. Both scholasticism and humanism emphasized at
least some mans participation in our own salvation. They both believed they were Christians and had
to do Christian type work. They believed that all humans are inherently good and that we have free

Kinetics
Section 1:
Kinetics is the study of the rate of chemical processes. The kinetics of the reaction between crystal
violet and NaOH was studied. In order to monitor crystal violet concentration as a function of time, a
spectroscopic colorimeter was used. What is the rate law for decolorization of crystal violet? In order
to figure this out, the rate of the reaction of crystal violet and sodium hydroxide must be found. In this
experiment, the initial goals were to determine the overall rate law for the rate of decolorization of
crystal violet in basic solutions as a function of time and to determine the rate law for the reaction
including the actual value of k; Rate = k[A]x[B]y. The rate of a reaction was expected to depend on

Time) because it had a correlation closest to 1. All three orders were graphed and a linear regression
was used to see which graphed order was closest to 1. The order was determined by comparing the
concentration and time to the mathematical predictions made using the integrated rate laws. Analyzing
each graph and finding each correlation helped determine which graph was closest to 1. The more
concentrated a solution is, the higher the absorbance of that solution. This is due to Beer s Law. The
law measures the absorbance of a solution by determining how much light passes through a solution.
As the concentration of a solution increases, fewer wavelengths of light are able to pass through the
concentrated solution. The absorbance at 60 seconds was 0.573 (Figure 1: Table1). To calculate the
concentration (molarity), the Beer s Law equation was used, Abs = slope(m)+b. Plugging in what is
known into the Beer s Law equation resulted in 0.573 = 3.172e+004 + 0, where the concentration is
determined by M = 0.573 0/ 3.172e+004. So, the concentration at 60 seconds using the equation (M =
0.573 0 / 3.172e+004) was 1.824e 5 M. The 1st order graph resulted in k=0.006152 (Figure 1: Graph

Family Dynamics Of Hispanic Families
Family Expectations Familismo. Latino parents expect their children to prioritize family needs over

Mutual Aid Agreements Are Essential For Allocating Resources
Mutual Aid Agreements Brian H. Doyle Saint Leo University Abstract Mutual aid agreements are
essential for allocating resources, equipment, and personnel between jurisdictions through intrastate,
interstate, private organizations, and nongovernmental organizations agencies in the event of an
emergency situation that exceeds the capabilities of the local agencies. Intrastate agencies mobilized
by a mutual aid agreement consist of resources within the state that can provide support to the
requesting department. During catastrophic events, interstate sources activated through a mutual aid
agreement are comprised of resources from other states that are able to support the operations required
when state resources are incapable of providing adequate aid. Private sector organizations, nonprofit
organizations, and nongovernmental organizations provide additional support in times of crisis when
the organization has necessary resources to sustain operations. Emergency situations that may arise
and benefit from the resources established in an existing mutual aid agreement include mass casualty
incidents, fire and law enforcement situations, natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes, and
terrorist attacks. Mutual Aid Agreements provide for increased capabilities during natural disasters,
terrorist events, and other emergency situations by enabling organizations at all levels to leverage
resources in their favor when the situation exceeds the capabilities of the local

Diversity And Equality And Diversity
Diversity tends to be established by people from different spheres of life including different
ethnicities, cultures, and social settings. It allows individuals to appreciate and understand the
interdependence of culture, the environment in which people are living, and humanity. Diversity also
helps individuals to build alliances and unity despite having a difference regarding their beliefs,
religion, and culture. It helps one to recognize and appreciate that people are born different regarding
their personality and values so that one can accommodate those differences and live together in peace
and harmony. There are some ways through which diversity can be promoted. Some of those ways
include; creating an environment that includes all persons regardless of their social status and
economic background. Secondly, diversity can be improved by ensuring there is equal access to jobs
and opportunity for all people without discrimination. Thirdly, diversity can be enhanced by making
amendments in the organization policies, procedures, and process. Fourthly, diversity can be
strengthened by ensuring people are included and treated with fairness and dignity. Fairness helps to
eliminate issues and differentials because it encourages all members of the society feel appreciated.

Looking at the section beginning No one has imagined us, I didn t identify the us necessarily as female
but more generally just as humanity struggling and that their the only one who notice how rough
things are, which, incidentally, I think is more powerful left unnamed because it allows the reader to
take on the poem for him or herself. Then I read live like trees, which i get the sense it means they
want to live naturally, free from the patriarchal oppression, and be able to branch out, take up space in
this city. The poet makes reference to the opera Tristand und Isolde (a story about lovers that do
confuse death and love, due to a love potion) and makes a point to say that the opera is NOT the story
that fate, magic, love potions, etc., have nothing to do with it. The existential theme is continued when
the poet mentions a tape recorder a device that can only record sound, what is actually said and done.
In a sense, she is saying that actions are what are important thoughts and intentions are meaningless in
death, what remains after we are gone is how we were are seen by others. If our actions define who we
are or how we tried to love, the recorded may have caught some ghost of us that recordable actions are
what will be remembered after death. She is saying that love is what we say and do, what we choose
to act upon by ourselves despite the forces that rage within us and against. I think it s also

Short Summary Of Araby
James Joyce tells a story of a young boy around the age of eleven, who lives with his uncle and aunt in
an uninhabited house at the end of a blind corner. He likes to play with his friends till late night. Araby
also known as the bazaar was the place he wishes to visit. This story is mainly based on the type of
place where they live, his fondness toward his friend s sister, and the Araby(bazaar) where he wanted
to go. According to the story the place they live sounds awful because as he mentioned The former
tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing room (Joyce 86). This place doesn t sounds
adequate enough for a child to live in because it can cause unnecessary fear for the child. Also he was
playing in the contaminating place till late night in freezing cold, which can be proven harmful for a
child s physical health. Once his aunt send him to market to pick up some of the parcels, on his way he
saw drunken men, druggies, and some bad people were cursing on each other. Those were the worst
things for a child to see, and a child was not supposed to send to those kind of market as well. Living
in this type of environment is dangerous for the child s future because a child learn faster by observing
an adult . His uncle and aunt were careless about him. They never paid attention to the things he had
been doing during their absence. On the other hand, they should have used all the bad things to give
him an example that, if he started doing those things he will never able to be a successful man. He will
be stuck there as those people were, and never will able to see a good lifestyle. But his uncle and aunt
had never bother themselves to teach him anything. As he likes to play with Mangan everyday. Most
of the time Mangan s sister come out to call him for tea, and he (Joyce as a child) likes to watch his
sister, every time she come out of her house. A little by little he started liking her, but he was scared to
talk to her. Except some casual talks. He was in love with her because everyday he uses different
techniques to take a glance at her. Once he murmured: O love! O love! many times for her. He
promised her that he will bring something for her whenever he goes to Araby. For a eleven year

Israel s Geography Essay
Israel is one of the world s smallest countries with a total area of 7,850 square miles. Since its
independence from British rule in May 1948, Israel has become home to some of the holiest sites of
Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Since 1948, Israel has been in numerous short wars with neighboring
countries fighting violence escalated by Palestinian groups and militias.
Israel has five major geographical regions, which consist of the Mediterranean coastal plain, the
central and northern highlands, the Plain of Esdraelon, the Great Rift Valley, and the Negev. The
Mediterranean Coastal Plain extends along the entire Israeli coast, which is also, where two thirds of
Israel s population lives. The central and northern highlands consist of a chain of hills and mountains

The As A Symbol Of Good Luck And Auspiciousness
Jew... This classification was the first stake that drove a division between the general German
population and the Jewish people.
One of the earliest forms of propaganda created, as well as one of the most recognizable to the general
public today, is the use of the Swastika to represent the National Socialist Germans Workers Party
(Nazi party). According to the USHMM s article on the History of the Swastika, it was not always
used as a symbol of distinguished the Nazi party fro the rest of the population. In their article, they
state that:
In the beginning of the twentieth century the swastika was widely used in Europe. It had numerous

A potent symbol intended to elicit pride among Aryans, the swastika also struck terror into Jews and
others deemed enemies of Nazi Germany.
This was the first classification and division created by the Nazis that had begun the process of
genocide. This was a crucial first step in ruling out the Jews as part of the Aryan race, and it only got
easier to further separate the Jews into us and them categories.
Stage two is symbolization, where names or other such symbols are given to the classifications. In his
examination of step two, Stanton mentions that, We name people Jews ... or distinguish them by colors
or dress; and apply the symbols to members of groups... [and] when combined with hatred, symbols
may be forced upon unwilling members of pariah groups: the yellow star for Jews under Nazi rule
This symbol, the Star of David, was a religious symbol used throughout Judaism. However, under
Nazi rule it became a symbol of labeling and a cause for separation. As one can see, symbols were a
large part of propaganda. The swastika was uses to represent the Nazi party, while the Star of David
was used to identify and represent the Jewish people residing in Germany. And like the Nazi s twisted
the true meaning of the Swastika to fit their means of representing racial purity, they also twisted the
religious meaning of the Star of David to something as derogatory as labeling individuals they deemed
lesser than themselves.

Reflective Essay They Say I Say
The writer starts off with stating the progression of the They Say I Say novel, explaining that once you
read and interpreted the opposing argument, we move onto developing our own argument. One thing
the writer did bring up was the consensus of how people would respond to having to write your own
argument. Bottom line, we all believe we don t know how to do it nor feel confident enough to
interject our own opinion. What we don t realize is we actually can.
My favorite line was that good arguments are not based on more knowledge about the topic but rather
how you can get to the main topic of the issue at hand and then address it. The writer follows with
three main ways to respond to other s arguments which are agreeing, disagreeing or both combined.
These points can help avoid an argument being dragged out or as the saying goes beating around the
bush . Identifying where you stand in your argument can actually make your argument stronger. What
drew me into this piece was that I could identify with this piece. I, too had expressed that I don t feel
comfortable entering what is considered a high powered conversation. Like stated in the piece, I

Analysis Of Gauthier ( 1987 )
Gauthier (1987) argues that while moral constraints are necessary in certain cases, such as in the
presence of market failures, they are not required in a perfectly competitive market (PCM). The PCM
is defined by the absence of non pecuniary externalities and public goods, perfect information,
certainty and mutual unconcern. In a PCM utility maximisation leads to a Pareto efficient outcome.
Since this allocation is efficient and achieved through free exchange, Gauthier (1987) concludes that
the PCM must be a morally free zone. Morality would result in a failure to reach optimality. However,
this essay will propose three different scenarios in which even PCMs should have moral constraints
placed upon them, and therefore cannot be morally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gauthier (1987:96) tries to get round this by arguing that in a PCM no one is affected, whether
beneficially or harmfully, by any market activity to which she has not chosen to be party. If this were
true it would rule out pecuniary externalities, but they obviously occur in PCMs. If Gauthier still
wanted to include the exclusion of pecuniary externalities, then he would undermine his own
argument that as long as a market is perfectly competitive it should be a morally free zone.
Nevertheless they are obviously important to consider when determining how morality should interact
with markets as they can have a significant impact on people s lives. Hausman (1992) uses the
example of the introduction of mechanical weaving looms to highlight this. The introduction of
mechanical looms would make the weaving industry more efficient, but would diminish the value of
the human and material capital of the hand loomers who had previously worked in the industry and as
a result would destroy their way of life. Defends of markets as morally free zones may respond with
the fact that PCMs should ensure these individuals are redirected to a new position. However, even if
they do manage to get a new job there is no guarantee that they will receive the

Video Games Cause Violence Research Paper
Video Games Cause Violence?
In this age of technology, it s very safe to say that a large majority of the world s population has
played at least one video game. This can vary from playing games on console, like Xbox One,
Playstation 4, and for the older generation, the NES to playing mobile games like Tetris. There are
many consoles that span from the creation of video games. This has opened opportunities to make
several kind of games. These can vary from side scrollers like Super Mario Bros. on the NES, to Role
playing games (RPG) like Final Fantasy IX on the Playstation 1. While this has caused some great
games to surface, it has also allowed intense violence to be let into games. Parents and anti gaming
communities state that this is why kids can become violent. This is false, because violent games can
be avoided to prevent this issue, and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has even made
various precautions to make sure parents know what they re purchasing. Comprehensible symbols,
detailed lists, and age restrictions prevents children from becoming violent .
To begin, the ESRB has released a full list of comprehensible symbols. For example, if you re looking

Success In George Gladwell s Individualistic Means Of Success
Success has long been viewed as a result of an individual s determination and in some cases, innate
talent. Said individual would generally be of a less fortunate background and rise to triumph with
seemingly no assistance from others. Conversely, Gladwell argues against this individualistic
approach to analyzing success. He instead argues that It is only by asking where they [successful
people] are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn t. Gladwell looks
deeper into the environment from which the successful spring and, using logic, thoroughly explains
every aspect that lead to their success.
Texting has revolutionized the way humans communicate in more ways than merely increasing the
speed at which they transmit information. For Instance, Common texting abbreviations such as lol or
rotfl have become ingrained into the culture of many first world countries and are now used in
everyday conversation. Though the individual speaking or typing these abbreviations is not actually
transmitting recognizable English words, there is a mutual understanding between the ones
communicating of what each series of letters means. The meanings of the words are not obscured in
any way.
When biologists examine the ecology of an organism, they observe not only that organism s traits but
also its environment. The biologist looks at things such as the surrounding organisms and how much
of a threat they are to an organism s survival, the accessibility of resources to the organism. In short,
the biologist looks at the organism s environment and sees what advantages it has had that allowed it
to survive, and in some cases, thrive. This is similar to the way in which Malcolm Gladwell describes
Accumulative Advantage . When Gladwell analyzes a successful person s rise to triumph, he takes
into account the person s environment. He looks at things such as birth date, social attitude, economic
trends, and genealogy to try to piece together what opportunities could have been an advantage and
what advantages could have accumulated (hence the term Accumulative Advantage) in a person s life
to propel them to their current successful status.

Vinyl Record History
In the early 1950s a new way of making music was discovered. This method grew to be popular
during the 1960s and remained popular for decades to come. Of course, this refers to the age of vinyl
records, a time where the market was ruled by little black discs. A vinyl record is a circular grooved
disc made from a petroleum based liquid ( What Are Vinyl Records?, n.d). They originally gained
popularity for their uncanny ability to capture and replay music. Vinyls revolutionized the music
industry, and naturally they became the main source of music distribution. The purpose of this essay is
to educate the public about the physics, history, and the creative process behind vinyl records. Records

Any speck of dust or debris that ever got on the record could be heard as static when the record was
played. They were also vulnerable to scratches which usually caused permanent damage. Records
could also be easily broken because of how thin they were. If they got too hot they would bend and
warp which would permanently ruin the record. All of these flaws caused a record s sound quality to
degrade overtime because it was impossible to protect a record from them. Cassette tapes, CDs, and
MP3s offered a stronger, longer lasting form of music distribution. The music market continued to
move and vinyl records were left behind. Despite all their flaws, vinyls continue to be made and sold,
and any music aficionado knows that in order to have the best and most natural sound they ll have to
find a vinyl record. Vinyls left behind a lasting legacy of pure sound, and no other form of recording

rates of hepatitis C infection in comparison to overall population. They attributed this to following
reasons; sexual behaviors, tattoo or piercing materials, nail or hair clippers, and razors. Some studies

study showed that 21% were sexually active and had one sexual experience at least at a sexual event

behavior at earlier age. Observations have been made that non injector drug users are involved in risky
behavior such as unprotected sex and exchanging sex for drugs or money. These drug users get high

to the social network of these people. The behavior could be subjective to communication and
exposure to individuals in networks who are involved in risky behaviors (Neaigus et al., 2006).

Society Versus the Individual Essay
Society Versus the Individual
The adage, the proper study of man is man , aside from its obvious gendered exclusion, describes
mounds of writing and thought about society and its components. Debates rage on in virtually all
fields with variations on the same theme: society versus the individual. In the writings of Durkheim,
Sahlins, and Foucault, the individual as coherent, persistent, and in control dissolves and is subsumed,
to different extents, within society. For the first two, society dominates the individual to a large degree
but not entirely. For Foucault, however, the entire terms of the debate seem meaningless, as both are
constructs of one larger mode of discursivity: the power/knowledge game that creates the ... Show

Obviously, these philosophical distinctions do not necessarily preclude subjectivity or make one feel
any less free , but the move is important strategically. If the subject is, while not an illusion (Foucault
29), fabricated by discourse, it becomes a politicized space that can have various destructive or
productive effects.
Beyond being merely arbitrary, Foucault offers some solid reasons the individual may be politically
undesirable. On the one hand, the concept of an individual subject with relative autonomy, coherence,
persistence, and so forth is far from internally cogent. If the subject is partially determined, and
partially free, the theory doesn t say much at all because free remains undefined. If the freedom has
behavior, patterns, or rules then it is not free, but if it is random, it is just as meaningless to call it free.
Further, if the subject is only free in certain cases, but is not free to determine what those cases are,
then it cannot control its own freedom, and is thus again unfree. Even if the self were considered
entirely free, which can only be established of course by non falsifiable decrees such as the Sartrean
insistence

How is Beowulf an Epic Hero
Every epic hero possesses certain heroic characteristics. The epic poem Beowulf describes the most

many as a strong, courageous and a helpful person. He shows all of the qualities and traits that a true
hero possesses.
Beowulf, like other epic heroes, possesses the following heroic qualities: epic heroes are superhuman

This shows Beowulf s strength, courage and fearlessness. Through this it is evident that he possess
courageous traits.
Beowulf s strength is exemplified many times in the story. Beowulf was said to have the strength of
thirty men in his mighty handgrip. He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious from all but
his last. In his argument with Unferth, Beowulf explains the reason he lost a swimming match with his
opponent Brecca. Not only had Beowulf been swimming for seven nights, he had also stopped to kill
nine sea creatures in the depths of the ocean. Beowulf is also strong enough to kill the monster
Grendel with his bare hands by ripping off his arm. When Beowulf is fighting Grendel s mother, he is
able to slay her by slashing the monster s neck with a giant sword that can only be lifted by a person
as strong as Beowulf. When he chops off her head, he carries it from the ocean with no difficulty, but
it takes four men to lift and carry it back to Heorot. This strength is a key trait of Beowulf s heroism.
Another heroic trait of Beowulf is his ability to put his people s welfare before his own. Beowulf s
uncle is king of the Geats so he is sent to help kill Grendel. His actions toward Grendel show that he is
willing to help others. In an epic it is usually found that the hero often determines the fate of a nation
or group of people. He uses his super human physical strength

Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth Essay
Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth serves as a strict model of

anxiety of falling from luxury, Lily could not recall the time when there had been money enough, and
in some vague way her father seemed always to blame for the deficiency. She offers a hidden opinion
that obsessing about money leaves one no time to enjoy life, It seemed to tire him to rest... Ultimately,
Mr. Bart died when he went bankrupt, which symbolizes high society s materialistic view that a man is
only useful and valued if he has a fat wallet. Individuals lived by the idea that happiness could be

  • 2. How To Invade Iraq Support To invade Iraq Hindsight makes everyone geniuses. With hindsight, more people would have bought shares in Microsoft when it first came out. Ditto for Amazon, Facebook, something called Berkshire Hathaway, and shares in, what was then, a small retailer based in Arkansas Walmart. We do not have hindsight. We can not guarantee success in everything we do. If the Iraq War only lasted 100 days, we would not have argued about whether there were weapons of mass destruction. It did not, on both counts. It lasted 3,195 days from March 20, 2003 till December 18, 2011. If we look back on the events surrounding the war, we can understand how it happened. Surprisingly, however, when we understood how, it was easier to understand and support the why. In March 2003, the United States initiated a preemptive war on Iraq. Iraq had nuclear capability termed weapons of mass destruction . Iraq had previously used chemical weapons on Iran and on its own people. There are those who support the Iraq War and say the prospect that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction was sufficient grounds for the invasion. There are those who say that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden had nearly a decade long relationship and possible alliance and that justified the U.S. Invasion of Iraq. Whether you support those views or not, it does not justify the following costs: 4,488: U.S. service personnel killed, 32,223: U.S. troops injured, 134,000: Iraqi civilians killed, 2.8 million: Iraqi civilians displaced, ... • 3. Failures Of The Puritan Society Seventeenth century Puritans had several aspirations, successes, and failures when it came to creating a model society. They had many successes in their society, some examples are their education system, their advancements in equality for women, and the way they created a tight knit close society. Although they had many achievements, the Puritans also did fall short in many aspects of their society. They ultimately did fail at their perfect society, and that is a very important aspect since that was their main goal. They also were very strict about their policies regarding the church. Once the generations progressed, they had to create new rules to allow people basic religious rights such as baptism. They also fused church and state, which was necessary in a society such as this, but it ultimately hindered progression such as allowing non church members to vote. As the years progressed more and more non Puritans entered the Puritan society, this hindered society because eventually the small majority was making the most riveting decisions. Ultimately the Puritans had both failures and successes when attempting a model society, but the weight of the failures simply outweighed the successes. Seventeenth century Puritans had a few specific goals when it came to the creation of their model society. Most importantly, they wanted every member of the community to be one of the elect. The elect were those who had received salvation and would in turn make it to heaven. They also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The introduction of My Antonia states that the narrator and Jim were to write down all they knew of her in order to maybe get a picture of her. She is a hardworking girl that belongs to a Bohemian family who has started a farm in Nebraska. Not only is she hard working but throughout the story she shows characteristics of being strong both inside and out. Also, it is very apparent that she wants to be independent and make her own decisions. I think Willa Cather admires the character Antonia because she can, in a way, reflect on her characteristics ... Not True Love in William Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet Essay Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet popularly considered by many to be the quintessential love story of all time is a play that we are all familiar with in one way or another. Whether it be through the plethora of portrayals, adaptations and performances that exist or through your own reading of the play, chances are you have been acquainted with this tale of tragic love at some point in your life. Through this universal familiarity an odd occurrence can be noted, one of almost canonical reverence for the themes commonly believed to be central to the plot. It is the attention he receives that causes me to scrutinize him with a keener eye; after all, we must hold those we revere most highly accountable for their actions . . . From the moment we first hear about Romeo, it is in the context of his suffering at the hands of love. Romeo s father, Montague, perplexed by his son s behavior states that, Many a morning hath he there been seen, / With tears augmenting the fresh morning s dew, / Adding to clouds more clouds with his deep sighs (1.1.124 26). While this may be the first time we encounter Romeo s melancholy humour, it certainly isn t the last. In fact, one of the primary sources of our infatuation with Romeo rests in our sympathy for him. From the very start this poor boy is plagued by affections for girls that fate, it seems, will not let him be with. At first, it s Rosaline, a girl who has sworn that she will still live chaste (1.1.210), a vow that sets Romeo reeling and complaining because from love s weak childish bow she lives unharmed (1.1.204). His depression over Rosaline is enough to draw the attention of his father, Montague, who has observed that Romeo shuts himself up in his room all day in order to wallow in the darkness. Comparison Of Sympathy And Caged Bird There have been many injustices throughout history, like slavery and discrimination; this is the time where two poems take place; Sympathy and Caged Bird . Maya Angelou and Paul Laurence Dunbar describe how it is like to be discriminated and separated, through their poems Sympathy and Caged Bird . However, they did not convene to generate these poems. Dunbar innovated the metaphor of a caged bird and discrimination. In her poem Caged Bird debuted in 1969, Maya Angelou writes about a character that is a caged bird who cannot fly and is separated from other birds. Paul Laurence Dunbar also writes of the struggle of a caged bird, who cannot become free even after eating the bars of his cage, in his poem Sympathy broached in 1889. Both writers explain the situations of caged birds and their desires to be free. In the poems Sympathy and Caged Bird , caged birds both sing for freedom, however, one is more confined than the other; Caged Bird is more meaningful, because the bird is unable to fly, and is emotionally affected by that. Catalase And Hydrogen Peroxide Reaction Lab Investigating the Effects of Temperature, Inhibitors, Enzyme, and Substrate Concentration on the Velocity of Catalase Hydrogen Peroxide Reactions By Linsey Coles Abstract This lab served to demonstrate the catalase catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas under different reaction conditions. This included the investigation of the effects of enzyme concentration, temperature, substrate concentration, and presence of inhibitors on the initial reaction velocity. Because this catalase hydrogen peroxide reaction is important in biological systems, this lab demonstrates the importance of maintaining homeostasis in cells to provide optimal conditions for these reactions. Experiment s Second Introduction This lab served to demonstrate the reaction between the enzyme catalase and hydrogen peroxide under different environmental conditions and the addition of an inhibitor. This is an important reaction in biological systems. Hydrogen peroxide serves many important roles in the body such as acting in signaling between cells, controlling inflammation at sites of injury (Halliwell et al. 2000), and cardio myogenesis (Seonmin et al. 2011). While important, hydrogen peroxide in excess can break down to hydroxide radicals and cause damage to DNA and other tissues (Halliwell et al. 2000). Because of this, hydrogen peroxide in cells must be regulated and this is done by catalase. Catalase is an enzyme that catalyzes the dissociation of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen gas, preventing the formation of oxidizing hydroxide radicals (Yang et al. 2002). It does this by binding to the hydrogen peroxide. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This particular essay instead will discuss Renaissance Humanism instead. In this essay, I will talk about several important facts around Humanism. First, I will define what Humanism is. Second, I will compare and contrast the core assumptions and attitudes that Humanism brings to society, culture, and the universe with the assumptions and attitudes that prevailed in Western Europe before the Renaissance. Last, how did Humanism pose a challenge to the traditional worldview of the Catholic Church? Renaissance humanism came to be around the thirteenth century during the intellectual movement which came to dominate European thought during the Renaissance. ... Scholasticism focused on training people who would was as theologians, on the other hand, humanism focused on creating people who would be ideal citizens in whatever domain their work was in. The most distinctively difference between the two was in the relm of the supernatural. In scholasticism, faith in supernatural things was an intrinsic understanding, whereas, humanism rejects the supernatural as a basis for study of work but placed emphasis on human reasoning (Ridenour, 2018). Scholasticism and humanism are both historical philosophies that influenced particular university level teaching methods. It was a school of thought that tried to bring the ideas of Aristotle and the ideas of the church. Both scholasticism and humanism emphasized at least some mans participation in our own salvation. In order to monitor crystal violet concentration as a function of time, a spectroscopic colorimeter was used. What is the rate law for decolorization of crystal violet? In order to figure this out, the rate of the reaction of crystal violet and sodium hydroxide must be found. In this experiment, the initial goals were to determine the overall rate law for the rate of decolorization of crystal violet in basic solutions as a function of time and to determine the rate law for the reaction including the actual value of k; Rate = k[A]x[B]y. All three orders were graphed and a linear regression was used to see which graphed order was closest to 1. The order was determined by comparing the concentration and time to the mathematical predictions made using the integrated rate laws. Analyzing each graph and finding each correlation helped determine which graph was closest to 1. The more concentrated a solution is, the higher the absorbance of that solution. This is due to Beer s Law. The law measures the absorbance of a solution by determining how much light passes through a solution. As the concentration of a solution increases, fewer wavelengths of light are able to pass through the concentrated solution. The absorbance at 60 seconds was 0.573 (Figure 1: Table1). To calculate the concentration (molarity), the Beer s Law equation was used, Abs = slope(m)+b. Plugging in what is known into the Beer s Law equation resulted in 0.573 = 3.172e+004 + 0, where the concentration is determined by M = 0.573 0/ 3.172e+004. So, the concentration at 60 seconds using the equation (M = 0.573 0 / 3.172e+004) was 1.824e 5 M. The 1st order graph resulted in k=0.006152 (Figure 1: Graph 1). Doyle Saint Leo University Abstract Mutual aid agreements are essential for allocating resources, equipment, and personnel between jurisdictions through intrastate, interstate, private organizations, and nongovernmental organizations agencies in the event of an emergency situation that exceeds the capabilities of the local agencies. Intrastate agencies mobilized by a mutual aid agreement consist of resources within the state that can provide support to the requesting department. During catastrophic events, interstate sources activated through a mutual aid agreement are comprised of resources from other states that are able to support the operations required when state resources are incapable of providing adequate aid. Private sector organizations, nonprofit organizations, and nongovernmental organizations provide additional support in times of crisis when the organization has necessary resources to sustain operations. Emergency situations that may arise and benefit from the resources established in an existing mutual aid agreement include mass casualty incidents, fire and law enforcement situations, natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes, and terrorist attacks. Mutual Aid Agreements provide for increased capabilities during natural disasters, terrorist events, and other emergency situations by enabling organizations at all levels to leverage resources in their favor when the situation exceeds the capabilities of the local ... • 23. Short Summary Of Araby James Joyce tells a story of a young boy around the age of eleven, who lives with his uncle and aunt in an uninhabited house at the end of a blind corner. He likes to play with his friends till late night. Araby also known as the bazaar was the place he wishes to visit. This story is mainly based on the type of place where they live, his fondness toward his friend s sister, and the Araby(bazaar) where he wanted to go. According to the story the place they live sounds awful because as he mentioned The former tenant of our house, a priest, had died in the back drawing room (Joyce 86). This place doesn t sounds adequate enough for a child to live in because it can cause unnecessary fear for the child. Also he was playing in the contaminating place till late night in freezing cold, which can be proven harmful for a child s physical health. Once his aunt send him to market to pick up some of the parcels, on his way he saw drunken men, druggies, and some bad people were cursing on each other. Those were the worst things for a child to see, and a child was not supposed to send to those kind of market as well. Living in this type of environment is dangerous for the child s future because a child learn faster by observing an adult . His uncle and aunt were careless about him. They never paid attention to the things he had been doing during their absence. On the other hand, they should have used all the bad things to give him an example that, if he started doing those things he will never able to be a successful man. He will be stuck there as those people were, and never will able to see a good lifestyle. But his uncle and aunt had never bother themselves to teach him anything. Reflective Essay They Say I Say The writer starts off with stating the progression of the They Say I Say novel, explaining that once you read and interpreted the opposing argument, we move onto developing our own argument. One thing the writer did bring up was the consensus of how people would respond to having to write your own argument. Bottom line, we all believe we don t know how to do it nor feel confident enough to interject our own opinion. What we don t realize is we actually can. My favorite line was that good arguments are not based on more knowledge about the topic but rather how you can get to the main topic of the issue at hand and then address it. The writer follows with three main ways to respond to other s arguments which are agreeing, disagreeing or both combined. These points can help avoid an argument being dragged out or as the saying goes beating around the bush . Identifying where you stand in your argument can actually make your argument stronger. • 27. Analysis Of Gauthier ( 1987 ) Gauthier (1987) argues that while moral constraints are necessary in certain cases, such as in the presence of market failures, they are not required in a perfectly competitive market (PCM). The PCM is defined by the absence of non pecuniary externalities and public goods, perfect information, certainty and mutual unconcern. In a PCM utility maximisation leads to a Pareto efficient outcome. Since this allocation is efficient and achieved through free exchange, Gauthier (1987) concludes that the PCM must be a morally free zone. Morality would result in a failure to reach optimality. However, this essay will propose three different scenarios in which even PCMs should have moral constraints placed upon them, and therefore cannot be morally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gauthier (1987:96) tries to get round this by arguing that in a PCM no one is affected, whether beneficially or harmfully, by any market activity to which she has not chosen to be party. If this were true it would rule out pecuniary externalities, but they obviously occur in PCMs. If Gauthier still wanted to include the exclusion of pecuniary externalities, then he would undermine his own argument that as long as a market is perfectly competitive it should be a morally free zone. Nevertheless they are obviously important to consider when determining how morality should interact with markets as they can have a significant impact on people s lives. Hausman (1992) uses the example of the introduction of mechanical weaving looms to highlight this. The introduction of mechanical looms would make the weaving industry more efficient, but would diminish the value of the human and material capital of the hand loomers who had previously worked in the industry and as a result would destroy their way of life. Defends of markets as morally free zones may respond with the fact that PCMs should ensure these individuals are redirected to a new position. • 29. Success In George Gladwell s Individualistic Means Of Success Success has long been viewed as a result of an individual s determination and in some cases, innate talent. Said individual would generally be of a less fortunate background and rise to triumph with seemingly no assistance from others. Conversely, Gladwell argues against this individualistic approach to analyzing success. He instead argues that It is only by asking where they [successful people] are from that we can unravel the logic behind who succeeds and who doesn t. Gladwell looks deeper into the environment from which the successful spring and, using logic, thoroughly explains every aspect that lead to their success. Texting has revolutionized the way humans communicate in more ways than merely increasing the speed at which they transmit information. For Instance, Common texting abbreviations such as lol or rotfl have become ingrained into the culture of many first world countries and are now used in everyday conversation. Though the individual speaking or typing these abbreviations is not actually transmitting recognizable English words, there is a mutual understanding between the ones communicating of what each series of letters means. The meanings of the words are not obscured in any way. When biologists examine the ecology of an organism, they observe not only that organism s traits but also its environment. The biologist looks at things such as the surrounding organisms and how much of a threat they are to an organism s survival, the accessibility of resources to the organism. In short, the biologist looks at the organism s environment and sees what advantages it has had that allowed it to survive, and in some cases, thrive. This is similar to the way in which Malcolm Gladwell describes Accumulative Advantage . When Gladwell analyzes a successful person s rise to triumph, he takes into account the person s environment. He looks at things such as birth date, social attitude, economic trends, and genealogy to try to piece together what opportunities could have been an advantage and what advantages could have accumulated (hence the term Accumulative Advantage) in a person s life to propel them to their current successful status. • 36. Society Versus the Individual Essay Society Versus the Individual The adage, the proper study of man is man , aside from its obvious gendered exclusion, describes mounds of writing and thought about society and its components. Debates rage on in virtually all fields with variations on the same theme: society versus the individual. In the writings of Durkheim, Sahlins, and Foucault, the individual as coherent, persistent, and in control dissolves and is subsumed, to different extents, within society. For the first two, society dominates the individual to a large degree but not entirely. For Foucault, however, the entire terms of the debate seem meaningless, as both are constructs of one larger mode of discursivity: the power/knowledge game that creates the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously, these philosophical distinctions do not necessarily preclude subjectivity or make one feel any less free , but the move is important strategically. If the subject is, while not an illusion (Foucault 29), fabricated by discourse, it becomes a politicized space that can have various destructive or productive effects. Beyond being merely arbitrary, Foucault offers some solid reasons the individual may be politically undesirable. On the one hand, the concept of an individual subject with relative autonomy, coherence, persistence, and so forth is far from internally cogent. If the subject is partially determined, and partially free, the theory doesn t say much at all because free remains undefined. If the freedom has behavior, patterns, or rules then it is not free, but if it is random, it is just as meaningless to call it free. Further, if the subject is only free in certain cases, but is not free to determine what those cases are, then it cannot control its own freedom, and is thus again unfree. Even if the self were considered entirely free, which can only be established of course by non falsifiable decrees such as the Sartrean insistence ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Through this it is evident that he possess courageous traits. Beowulf s strength is exemplified many times in the story. Beowulf was said to have the strength of thirty men in his mighty handgrip. He fought in numerous battles and returned victorious from all but his last. In his argument with Unferth, Beowulf explains the reason he lost a swimming match with his opponent Brecca. Not only had Beowulf been swimming for seven nights, he had also stopped to kill nine sea creatures in the depths of the ocean. Beowulf is also strong enough to kill the monster Grendel with his bare hands by ripping off his arm. When Beowulf is fighting Grendel s mother, he is able to slay her by slashing the monster s neck with a giant sword that can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf. When he chops off her head, he carries it from the ocean with no difficulty, but it takes four men to lift and carry it back to Heorot. This strength is a key trait of Beowulf s heroism. Another heroic trait of Beowulf is his ability to put his people s welfare before his own. Beowulf s uncle is king of the Geats so he is sent to help kill Grendel. His actions toward Grendel show that he is willing to help others. In an epic it is usually found that the hero often determines the fate of a nation or group of people. He uses his super human physical strength ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth Essay Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth Edith Wharton s The House of Mirth serves as a strict model of etiquette for high society in the Gilded Age. It teaches one the intricate art of keeping up appearances and assimilating into the fickle leisure class. At the same time, the novel s underlying purpose is to subtly critique this social order. Lily Bart s perpetual, although often reluctant quest for financial stability and mass approval is a vehicle for demonstrating the numerous absurdities and constant pretensions of a class that revolved around money and opinion. Lily Bart embodies the enormous tension between old and new money that was so prevalent during the 1880 s. Since birth, she was fated to be in the middle of ... Hudson Bart had appeared young; but Lily could not recall the time when her father had not been bald and slightly stooping, with streaks of grey in his hair, and a tired walk. It was a shock to her to learn afterward that he was but two years older than her mother. Wharton hints at the toll of the constant anxiety of falling from luxury, Lily could not recall the time when there had been money enough, and in some vague way her father seemed always to blame for the deficiency. She offers a hidden opinion that obsessing about money leaves one no time to enjoy life, It seemed to tire him to rest... Ultimately, Mr. Bart died when he went bankrupt, which symbolizes high society s materialistic view that a man is only useful and valued if he has a fat wallet. Individuals lived by the idea that happiness could be bought, while unwittingly causing their own demise. Wharton also implies that high society s symbols of luxury can often be harmful when Lily becomes addicted to tea. Wharton critiques society s willingness to go to any extent for the sake of appearing prominent, Lily was naturally proud of her mother s aptitude in this line: she had been brought up in the faith that, whatever it cost, one must have a good cook, and be what Mrs. Bart called decently dressed. The characters are living a constant lie, and the fear that anyone outside the immediate family can be privy to one s true financial position is evident when Mrs. Bart is reluctant to ...
