1. Pose and Facial Expression
Research
Millum and Ferguson
Marjorie Ferguson -Ferguson identified four main women's poses used in magazines.
• Chocolate box
• Invitational
• Super Smiler
• Romantic and sexual
Where as Trevor Millum identified poses generally used by men in magazines.
• Carefree
• practical
• Seductive
• Comic
• Catalogue
2. All front cover images are a close up of an individual young and
attraction well known female. Either Models, Singers, actresses
or any other job that involves being a popular sensation. The
companies have used the device of star appeal to draw the
readers attention, implying by using a well known celebrity to
model on their magazine it will get more publicity. In addition
to this I also quickly that young females are the primary
audience were the majority of lifestyle magazines, implying
this type of magazine would relate best to them. All images are
presented in the middle third implying importance and
significance to the issue. All models are presented at a direct
angle looking at the camera, automatically creating a
connection with the audience implying there's no barriers
between them. Enforcing loyalty, respect and friendship all
emotions I wanted to display through my own product.
However depending on the magazine company the face
expression of the model differs to suit that type of audience.
Such as: Vogue is a very well known and established iconic
fashion and lifestyle magazine that has been around since
1892, therefore they have a older target audience compared to
others and affect better to different styles etc. All vogue front
cover model present a serious facial expression suggesting
they believe there industry is important and shouldn't be taken
as a joke. Where as Heat or Teen Vogue's models use a playful
3. The general codes and conventions for content images is a long shot of
a model slightly positioned off middle third with text or sub images
featured around them( either middle left or middle left), this still
suggests importance to the model as some is in the middle third
however this time it has equal significance with the text on the page.
Text as a feature is an key part to making a content page, hence the
word content as it provides the reader with information about the
magazine. This is a technique used to persuade the buyer to read on.
The long shot of the model has been used to show the fashion and
possible lifestyle aspects of the following magazines, this type of shot
allows the readers to see outfits, styles and further hidden information.
Where as the close up used previously was displaying mainly the beauty
aspect as it was up close and personal in the models face. The stances
of the models are very bold and big implying confidence, attitude and
strength. For example: on the top left Glamour issue the mature model
is standing with her hands on her hips suggesting she's brave, confident
and wants to be seen, also displaying the outfit. Where as the model
within the Teen Vogue magazine is sitting down with my arms coming
over my body, just pose symbolises defence which is a characteristic all
teens tend to act upon. She also displays shy, young and relaxed
emotions by sitting down.
4. After looking at many adverts I have gathered the general idea
of the main codes and conventions followed by most fashion,
beauty and healthy industries. All adverts I have looked at are a
extreme long shot, mainly in a landscape form. This helps to
improve professionally as there's space and the adverts doesn't
look mess or busy. The models tends to be positioned again off
the middle third showing importance but not taking attention
away from the product being advertised itself. The model either
has the product in their arms demonstrating how to use it or it
will be along side them, this gives viewers essential information
without having to use a lot of text and space. There's a mixture
of close ups shots and long shots this depends on the product
that is being advertised. For example if a make up product is the
subject there will be a close up of a model with the product and
looking as they are using it/have it on. Where as if it's a fashion
product being advertised a long shot will be used so the model
can display the item on, making it look much more appealing
and trendy
5. I have analysed several articles and came to the judgement that
all articles within lifestyle magazine do tend to follow some
codes and conventions however it definitely depends on the key
topic of the article. Etc. Beauty, Health, Fashion or a question
and answer with celebrities. One general code and convention
followed by articles images is that they usually take up a one full
side of the page. This enforces importance to the character as
they are presented bold and big for all to see, this suggest
companies really wanted their model to be seen by readers. This
device used is called star appeal by presenting a well known,
popular and monumental character/artist so that readers will be
drawn to buy the magazine and find out more about their
favourite celebs. The majority of companies use mid shots or
medium long shot, leaving factors of the models body out. This
suggests there's something to hidden such as hidden identity or
secret, implying this perhaps could be revealed in the text along
side the image. Most models aren't making connection with the
camera unless its a question and answer about them, the others
seem as if they have been actions shots and just captured in the
shot. This adds realism and honesty to the article suggesting
what you see is what you get, not posed or altered. Facial
expressions are some very serious and blank. Enforcing
importance of topic, professionally and attitude.
