2. Target Audience
My target audience is young teens aged between 12 and 15. However, the more predominant gender
reading my magazine will me females due to the colour schemes and the article basis’. I wanted to attract
young teens that were interested in pop genre and also the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. The magazine
is based around celebrities and their music adventures, therefore, my readers must have an interest in
new pop music. Personally, I feel as though I have successfully attracted my target audience through the
use of colour schemes and the celebrities that I have included in my magazines.
I did a lot of research into my audience and what they like and like to read in order for the
magazine to appeal to them. I created a series of mood boards on a variety of things so that I had an idea of
what my audience want to see. Later in the design process, I referred back to the mood boards
3. Mood Board
I created a series of mood boards that represented my target audience and showcased the objects and areas that, in my eyes, I think they would like. I made a mood board of the things
my target audience would like, but also a one for the competitions and the magazines that I was taking information from. I did this so that I could evaluate and analyse their colour
scheme and genre and see it any of it would clash or could inspire me when creating my magazine. In the bottom right corner of this slide is one of my mood boards that I made. As you
can see I have included band and manufacture logos that would appeal to and also be some thing that they would generally have and use. The main colour of the mood board is pink
because that will be the main tone that I use on my magazine because it generally represents and appeals to young teenage females. I posted these mood boards on my blog so that my
audience can see it and also so that I can use them for future references when making decisions.
I returned to looking at these mood boards later in the creating process,
They helped me to come up with final clothing styles for the models that were going to be on the magazine. I made the clothing styles very girly and relaxed on some pictures, directly
reflecting the mood board which I had created on my target audience. This
helped create a connection and attract the target audience into reading the magazine because
it was their favourite colour schemes and also types of clothing that they would generally
wear on a day to day basis.
As you can see the finished product that is on the final front cover reflects my
initial mood boards that I created. The model is wearing a light pink jumper top and has quite
a natural look, with tinted pink lips. The mood boards started the process into creating the
magazine and were the basis for most of my design ideas.
4. Social Media
On my contents page I have included three social media links for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I have done so
because when I researched my target audience, their biggest interest was social media, texting and Snapchatting.
Therefor I made one my aims to include this because it would allow the magazine to create an online following where
teens can go onto our Instagram page and read the latest articles and also access our web page. At first I planned to
make the social media segment quite large because I wanted to promote it even more than some of the articles,
however after a lot of deliberation and research I minimized it in order to draw more attention to the more important
aspects of the magazine. However, it is still clearly visible for the audience to read and look for.
Due to growing up in a technology targeted and based world, teenagers will use social media for a lot of
things like reading about gossip. Therefor, by including an online resource for them to read information. We, as a
magazine company, will be creating that connection between the magazine and the reader because we are offering
them the opportunity to read the magazine online, maybe not is as much detail, but they can still view it without having
to stand and read a magazine, because most teens wouldn't be seen reading a magazine
5. Dominant Image
I had two dominant images within my magazine, one of the front cover and then one of the double page spread. When
taking the images I wanted the model to look quite innocent and young because an image that looked sexual would be
inappropriate for the age range of the target audience. I also choose a model that was around the target audiences
age range so that they can relate to them and create that connection, which will pull them into reading the article. If a
image of an older model was on the front cover of a pop magazine, targeted at teens, then they
maybe reluctant to buying it because of the age gap and
having nothing in common with them. The dominant
image on the double page spread also includes the
model, this is so that I could tie it in to the same story and
showcase my main article on the front cover. The image has the
model wearing quite relaxed clothing because I want the reader
to feel comfortable when reading my article, the overall feeling
of the magazine is quite relaxed and chilled therefor I
wanted this to have a reflection on the images that I have included.
6. Language And Register
Throughout my magazine I have used a mixture between informal and formal language, this is so that my magazine can be interesting but also full of
information. Due to my targetaudience being quite young I decided to use a view slang terms throughout the magazine because it will then createthat
personal connection between the reader and the magazine, making them want to read it even more because it’s on their level and connects with their
speaking styles. If the language was to be very complex and constantly formal, then I may not have as many readers because the language is to complex
for them and they can’t understand it or they don’t want to be reading a pop magazine within the context.
I did some research into language and register on pop magazines and found that generally pop magazine readers are quite young, therefore, the
language has to be quite simple in order for them to be interested and to understand it. I also realised most magazine use quite a lot of punctuation, like
question marks and exclamation marks. Therefore, I tried to incorporate them within my text because I feel as though they can give the article a lift and
make them sound more interesting. I also used rhetorical questions throughout the magazine, in order to keep the readerinvolved in the article and get
them thinking about what they are reading, making it more memorable.
My article was written in a normal, column format and then at the end I incorporateda small question and answer section. I involved this question
section because when I created some surveys, my feedback suggested that my target audience prefer a small question and answer section as well as
some normal structured text. Therefore, I chose to add a small Q and A section at the end of the text so that my targetaudience could learn facts and the
artists personal opinions and answers almost immediately, allowing them to read it quicker. As well as this writing structure, my main aim was to create
and continually use an upbeat tone to keep the audience interestedand excited to find out more. If the tone of the text was to have been bland and
boring, then my target audience would not read it due to their age range, and wanting to read about all of the gossip in an informal and exciting manner.
7. Colour Scheme
The use of colour schemes is highly important when it comes to the creation of magazine. When determining a colour scheme you have to consider
you targetaudience and also the genre of the magazine your creating. Colour schemes all match a certain genre, for example, rock magazines would
generally have a dark colour scheme and pop magazines would quite a light and feminine colour scheme.
Taking all of the stereotypical schemes into
consideration, I have decidedto use pink, purple and blue tones throughout my magazine. This is because I want my magazine to appeal and attract
my target audience, teenagegirls. Because pink tones are generally associated with females I have used the colour scheme throughout, in order to
attract as many readers as possible. Also thee colour scheme I have chosen will be bright and vibrant, therefore, will stand out on the shelves.
My overall colour scheme for the magazine was based on pinks and light blues. I wanted to use these colours
because they’re bright and vibrant but also were stereotypically relatableto my target audience. When you think of the colour pink, you think young,
feminine, relaxed and in your face. I used it because of all of these reasons, I wanted it to be in your face and bright, so that you cant walk past it
without having a glance at the cover. My target audience is young female teens, therefor stereotypicallythought as of being a gender that loves the
colour pink. In my opinion, and according to my research, my targetaudience generally like these bright colours to be on the magazine because it
fits with the genre and is a colour that is visually pleasing for them.
