The document outlines a photo shoot plan that includes:
1) Using a 16/17 year old female model to appear slightly older and be inspirational to target readers of a similar age.
2) Giving the model heavy eye makeup and messy curly hair against a natural setting like a field or forest with minimal props and clothing.
3) Photographing the model with a serious pose for the cover and another serious pose plus a natural laughing pose for inside pages to convey emotion and relate to the natural background.
This presentation contains an analysis of images that I considered using as the main image on the front cover image for my magazine and why they would or would not be suitable.

1. Photo shoot plan
Model
For my model I will use a female aged 16/17, however I will attempt to make them look
slightly older than this as the typical musician will become well known around the age of 20.
I feel that by using someone of this age range on the cover, it will be inspirational to the
reader as the model on the front cover is of a similar age to my target readers. I have chosen
to use a female rather than a male on the front cover of my magazine because I have aimed
my magazine to appeal more to females than males. I have chosen to go against the male
gaze (Laura Mulvey) as I want the female on the cover to be inspiring and be seen as an
aspiration for the female reader rather than trying to attract the male reader and act as an
object of desire.
Hair/Make-up
In terms of make-up, my model will have quite heavy eye-make-up with a more minimalistic
face. I have chosen this combination as I feel that this will provide a high level of contrast
once the images have been manipulated and edited as this was the chosen style of image
from my questionnaire. I also believe that people’s eyes tell a lot about the person. I want
the readers to notice the models eyes first of all as hopefully they will help to convey the
emotion within the model which will relate to the story for my double page spread. For the
hair I will use a model with long hair that hasn’t been styled. I will aim for the model to hair
quite messy curly hair as I feel these styles fit the genre of my magazine.
2. Props
I don’t plan to use any props in my photo-shoot. I feel that it would take away the attention
from the model which I want to be the first thing the reader notices on the page. However I
may include flowers in the models hair to fit in with my choice of background and the genre
and reinforce the feminine feel of the magazine.
Clothes
The outfit that my model will wear will be fairly minimalistic; a jacket, either denim, leather
or an army jacket, a plain shirt or t-shirt, and either leggings or shorts with tights. I feel that
this combination will work well against the setting I have chosen as the minimal nature of
the outfit ensures that detail isn’t taken away from the background. I also feel that the
outfit fits in with current fashion trends within the indie genre. My questionnaire results
also showed that my target audience have an interest and fashion.
3. Location/setting
For my setting, I will place my model in a field, forest or countryside. I feel this will provide a
contrast between the model who will be quite heavily made up and the natural setting.
However, if I am not able to photograph my model at the setting, I will photograph the
model and the setting separately.
Colours
For the colours, I will try to keep the model as plain as possible with the setting/background
as bright and light as possible. I feel that this will provide a good contrast between the two
as well as bringing some colour to the page, which was voted as the most popular choice on
my questionnaire.
Lighting
I will aim to use as much natural lighting as possible to provide a more even colour all over. I
also feel that this will fit the natural feel that I want to achieve in the image, which also
relates to the background that I have chosen. However, if I need to photograph the model
indoors on a white sheet, I will have to use as much natural lighting from windows and then
use artificial lighting to achieve the correct lighting.
Pose
I aim for the model to have a serious, basic image in the form of a passport photo for the
front cover. I feel this pose will allow me to convey the deeper emotions and leave the
reader wondering how they may be feeling. I also feel this is the best pose to ensure that
the models face and eyes are they first thing they notice on the page. For the inside images
on the contents page and double page, i aim to have another similar image, and a natural
laughing pose. I feel that by making the laughing image natural, it will relate to the natural
background and setting that I have chose
