DEFINITION
OF
CURRICULUM
BLOOM’S TAXONOMY
• In the 1950’s, Benjamin Bloom headed a group of
educational psychologists whose goal was to develop a
system of categories of learning behavior to assist in the
design and assessment of educational learning. The
group identified three domains of learning.
• Cognitive (thinking)
• Affective (feeling)
• Psychomotor (doing)
The Cognitive Domain
• Cognition refers to conscious mental
activities, and include thinking, reasoning,
understanding, learning, and remembering.
• The taxonomy contains six levels, with
sublevels identified for each.

The Cognitive Domain
Knowledge
The student will define the 6
levels of Bloom's taxonomy
of the cognitive domain.
The Cognitive Domain

Student translates,
comprehends, or interprets
information based on prior
learning.

The Cognitive Domain
The student will explain
the purpose of Bloom's
taxonomy of the cognitive
domain.

principles to complete a
problem or task with a
minimum of direction.

The Cognitive Domain
Application
The student will write an

each level of Bloom's
taxonomy.
The Cognitive Domain

assumptions, hypotheses,
evidence, or structure of a
statement or question.

The Cognitive Domain
Analysis
The student will compare

The Cognitive Domain
Synthesis
The student will design a
classification scheme for writing
educational objectives that
combines the cognitive, affective,
and psychomotor domains.

Student appraises,
assesses, or critiques on a
basis of specific standards
and criteria.
