Communities now own or manage a quarter of the world’s tropical forests, but the case studies in this presentation illustrate the many key challenges remaining for smallholder and community forest management in the tropics. For example, the customary rights of smallholders and communities are still not properly recognised; there are discrepancies between the law and the reality in forest management and use; and there are difficulties in linking communities to markets.
CIFOR scientist Amy Duchelle explains how the smallholder and community forest management model came about, and where we need to go next. She gave this presentation on 16 June 2012 as part of the Forest Stewardship Council’s side event at Rio+20. She was answering the topic “Focussing on smallholders and forest communities: achievements and challenges at the local level”.
The evolving role of tropical forests for local livelihoods in Indonesia
This document summarizes research on how the role of tropical forests has evolved for local livelihoods in Indonesia. Key findings include: (1) Forests remain important but their significance is declining for local communities. (2) Major trends affecting livelihoods and forests are development projects, logging/mining activities, floods, and decreasing yields of rice and eaglewood. A presentation on community forest
Community forests in Nepal cover 25% of the country's forest land and are managed by over 14,000 local community forest user groups (CFUGs) representing 35% of Nepal's population. Under the 1993 Forest Act, national forests are handed over to CFUGs for protection, management, and sustainable use. Since 1978, community forestry has led to increased forest cover, social mobilization, income generation, and institutional development at the local level. However, challenges remain in ensuring disadvantaged groups' access, improving technical forest management, focusing on local needs, and supporting women and the poor through CFUG decision making. Overall, community forestry shows promise for sustainable forest management if democratic processes and people's participation are strengthened

Vulnerabilities of forests and forest dependent people

Silvicultural systems

Natural regeneration uses seeds and sprouts while artificial regeneration may involve site preparation and planting.

Empowering Community-Based Climate Solutions
New York, 18 June, 2015 — The UNDP Equator Initiative hosted a Brown Bag Lunch to discuss how community-based climate solutions are achieved and what they can teach us about engaging communities to address climate change.
The talk featured Gregory Mock, former Editor in-Chief of the World Resources Report series, and was moderated by Nick Remple, Global Advisor for Community Based Landscape Management at BPPS and Director of the Community Development and Knowledge Management for the Satoyama Initiative (COMDEKS).
Mr. Mock, who has written extensively on local environmental governance and community-based efforts to sustainably manage local ecosystems, drew parallels between the findings of the Equator Initiative and the COMDEKS program:
“Forest communities can be a potent source of local climate solutions when they are empowered with resource rights and access to support networks,” said Mr. Mock. “Experience from the Equator Initiative and COMDEKS shows that community-based management of local forests can cut deforestation rates and reverse forest degradation."
In 2012, Mr. Mock collaborated with the Equator Initiative to survey 10 years of Equator Prize experience and extract lessons on the enabling conditions for successful local action. In 2014, he worked with the COMDEKS Programme to document its community-based approach to managing rural landscapes in 10 pilot countries.”
Participatory Forest Management (Pakistan)
Participatory Forest Management (PFM) is a strategy for sustainable forest management that encourages local communities living near forests to manage or co-manage forest resources. PFM aims to involve local stakeholders in decision making for forest management. In the 1980s, governments began decentralizing natural resource management to local institutions to reduce costs, more effectively protect resources and local livelihoods, and increase local responsiveness and efficiency through community participation and skills. PFM strategies include Community Based Forest Management, where villagers fully own and manage village lands, and Joint Forest Management, where government and communities collaboratively manage government forest reserves.

Growing forest partnerships and the investing in locally controlled initiative

This is a presentation of some of the results of my PhD project. I presented it in September 2013 to the Environmental Politics Research Group at Lund University, Sweden.
Sustainable forest management malaysia
1) Malaysia recognizes forestry as an important economic sector and is making efforts to manage its forest resources sustainably through various policies and practices.
2) Key aspects of sustainable forest management in Malaysia include establishing permanent forest reserves, determining annual allowable cuts, implementing reduced impact logging, and obtaining timber certification.
3) While some deforestation has occurred historically for development purposes, Malaysia's forest policies and practices have helped reduce deforestation rates and promote sustainable management of its production and protection forests.

Managing for high value timber and biodiversity in the Congo Basin
Multiple-use forest management is considered by many as a preferable alternative to single-use, generally timber-dominant, management models to ensure a greater biodiversity. In this presentation we will briefly explore the major land-uses in the Congo Basin and their actual or potential for sustaining biodiversity in a production context. We then focus on the most extant production systems (shifting cultivation, industrial logging concessions and main commodity crops) to analyze the existing issues and options for managing actively both valuable timber species and biodiversity with a special emphasis timber stands, wildlife and the potential role of certification.
We highlight a few promising but yet ‘unfinished’ examples in the region and we review these cases to draw lessons and recommendations. We contend however that true multiple-use could only be realized by expanding beyond boundaries of formal management units through new innovative land-use units, allowing a spatial cohabitation of the interests of local people, of conservation proponents and of extractive industries in the same management unit.

CGIAR Research Program 6 - An overview
Forests are cut, temperatures rise and biodiversity is lost. The poor become poorer and indigenous cultures disappear. With the rise in temperatures, fires increase, droughts lengthen, floods spread, and pests and diseases affecting livestock and plants adapt and multiply. What many are calling a 'perfect storm' gathers strength and the impact rolls across the developing world from the forests to the farms to the atmosphere. This scenario stems in large measure from the poor management of our forests, trees and wild genetic resources.
The CGIAR research program outlined in this presentation brings together four of the world's leading research centres in their respective subjects - the World Agroforestry Centre, CIFOR, CIAT and Bioversity - and channels them toward a clear objective: enhancing the management and use of forests, agroforestry and tree genetic resources across the landscape from forests to farms.

REDD experiences in Latin America: Lessons Learned at the project level

Land tenure and redd+ good bad ugly
This document summarizes a study on how land tenure issues relate to REDD+ programs. The study found that unclear or informal land tenure can lead to the exclusion of forest communities from REDD+ benefits and increase the risk of land grabbing. At the national level, countries had substantial land tenure problems but weak policies to address them. Project-level efforts by proponents tried to address tenure, but were limited without stronger national frameworks. While REDD+ is raising more discussion on tenure rights, the outcomes still carry both risks and opportunities that depend on how rights are approached and whether local communities or elites capture the benefits.
Kenya's indigenous peoples and redd
Indigenous peoples in Kenya face challenges regarding REDD+ implementation, as the government does not fully recognize them and they are not involved in the REDD+ process. Deforestation is driven by demand for timber, fuelwood, and charcoal as well as poverty. Climate change is negatively impacting indigenous livelihoods. There is a need for capacity building, IP involvement in REDD+, and measures to ensure good governance. Kenya has forest policies and laws, but IP concerns are not fully addressed. Information about REDD+ remains limited.
Redd readiness activities in kenya iisd
Kenya has begun REDD readiness activities to reduce deforestation and forest degradation. The Kenya Forest Service coordinates national REDD efforts through a technical working group divided into subgroups focusing on consultation and participation, methodology, and policy/institutions.
