- The document discusses cloud computing and provides perspectives from IT professionals on what qualifies as cloud computing. It addresses different cloud models like IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS.
- Survey results show that IT professionals view hosted services as legitimate examples of cloud computing, rather than just the enabling technology. Factors like elastic scaling of resources and pay-per-use models are also seen as important.
- There is no single definition and different workloads may be suited to different deployment models between on-premise, hosted, dedicated, or shared/dynamic environments. The key is understanding individual requirements.

The Briefing Room with Malcolm Chisholm and Druva
Live
The emergence of the mobile workforce has left an indelible mark on the enterprise; every employee is now mobile, and business data continues to be dispatched to the far reaches of the enterprise. While this has added enormous opportunity for increased productivity, it has also muddied the waters when it comes to controlling and protecting valuable data assets. As companies quickly evolve to address the new set of challenges posed by this shift in data usage, IT must ensure that all data, no matter where it’s generated or stored, is available and governed just as if it were still safely behind the corporate firewall.
Register for this episode of The Briefing Room to hear veteran Analyst Malcolm Chisholm as he explains the myriad challenges that mobile data introduces when addressing regulations and compliance needs, requiring new approaches to data governance. He’ll be briefed by Dave Packer of Druva, who will outline his company’s converged data protection strategy, which brings data center class capabilities to backup, availability and governance for the mobile workforce. He will share strategies to meet regional data residency, data recovery, legal hold and eDiscovery requirements and more.

In 2016, cloud technologies went mainstream. But with maturity came the realization that moving to the cloud doesn’t happen overnight. CIOs are prioritizing hosted computing and cloud data storage. But they’re approaching the shift as a gradual, multi-year journey.
Many startups and small businesses will continue to go all-in on cloud. But enterprises will find success in a slow but steady move from on-prem. Hybrid ecosystems—of data, software, and infrastructure—will be the reality for most established organizations.
As this shift to cloud progresses where are things are headed? This paper highlights the top cloud trends for 2017.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

26. Lots of hosted service options, lots of potential ON-DEMAND SERVICE CATEGORIES Business application services It is in this area that the term ‘Software as a Service’ (SaaS) was originally coined. Services at this level are typically focused on the delivery of complete business functionality, e.g. CRM, ERP, etc. Hosted productivity tools Services here are more concerned with horizontal capability ranging from desktop suites for end users, through to modelling, development and project management tools for analysts and developers. Hosted comms/collaboration Spearheaded initially by hosted email and web conferencing, the number of services offerings in this area has exploded to include full unified communications and/or social media (directories, blogs, wikis, etc). Trading community services As supply chain automation has gathered momentum in some industry sectors, services have emerged aimed at facilitating the way in which customers and suppliers collaborate and transact electronically. Plug-in services A myriad of services exist which do not provide complete business functionality but ‘plug into’ existing applications to enhance or extend them. Examples include everything from mapping to credit checking. Application platform services As an alternative to consuming pre-built services from external providers, application platform services provide development and runtime environments allowing custom applications to be built and hosted online. Operational services This often overlooked but highly important category is where we find services concerned with online backup, archiving, security (e.g. email filtering), etc., and even full blown monitoring and management tools.
