3. A phrase is defined as a group of
related words that does not contain a
subject and a verb. The following are
examples of phrases:
 to the park
 at the fair
 a mischievous boy
 before the first test
 broken into thousands of pieces

words that contains a subject and
predicate (verb). The following are examples
of clauses:
Independent clause Dependent clause
She is hurry. Because she is hurry

5. Clauses as part of Noun Phrases
Noun
o Noun is a term given to a
naming word that names a
person, an animal, place, thing,
quality, idea, or action.

Noun Phrases
NOUNPHRASE = noun+ modifiers
A noun phrase is a group of related
words which play the role of a
noun or a pronoun as the head
and any associated modifiers.

7. Examples:
The shopkeeper will only allow 2 children in at once. (normal
noun)
The overweight shopkeeper will only allow 2 children... (noun
phrase)
Give it back to the boy. (normal noun)
Give it back to the boy on the boat. (noun phrase)

• Similar to the noun, a noun
phrase commonly functions
both as a subject as well as
an object of the verb.

Adverbial Phrases
Adverb
o Adverbs are words that tell us
more about verbs. They tell us
how, when, or where the
action of the verb takes place.

10. Clauses as part of Adverbial Phrases
o When a phrase tells us something
more about the action word in the
sentence, or describes the verb in a
sentence, it is called an adverb or
adverbial phrase.
Example:
Tony decided to move to Reading yesterday. (normal
adverb)
Tony decided to move to Slough in June last year.
(adverbial phrase)

When an adverbial phrase is at the start of a sentence, it is usual
to follow it with a comma.

12. Adverbial Phrases
o Prepositional phrases and infinitive
phrases can both function as adverb
phrases in sentences.
o An adverb phrase is simply two or more
words that act as an adverb. It can
modify a verb, adverb, or adjective and
can tell “how”, “where”, or “when.”
