8. TYPES OF
CLASSIFICATION
• Multistage Classification- sets are
sorted into subsets, then each of those
subsets is sorted again and again. This
creates several layers, or stages, of
subsets.
• Example: Animals that may have been
grouped as vertebrates may be separated
again into groups of reptiles, birds,
mammals, fish, and amphibians. These are
all subsets of vertebrates. 8
10. TYPES OF
CLASSIFICATION
Serial Ordering- objects are
placed in order by the extent to
which they have a certain
property. For example, rocks
may be placed in order from
smallest to largest or lightest to
heaviest.

12. HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT CLASSIFYING
OBJECTS OR EVENTS? FOLLOW THESE
TIPS.
1. Observe a set of objects or
events. Think of their proponents or
characteristics.
2. Divide the set into two or more
groups based on one observable
property.
3. Divided the objects or events
based on a second observable
property.
13. •4. Repeat number 3
using another
observable property.
•5. Show the
classification using a
diagram.
