There are two main classifications of matter: pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances can be either elements, which are made of only one type of atom, or compounds, which are made of two or more elements chemically bonded together. Mixtures contain two or more pure substances that are either evenly mixed, forming a homogeneous mixture, or unevenly mixed, forming a heterogeneous mixture.
