increasing Euro-Kid’s self-trust by involving in the project as an active
European citizen. Realizing this step will contribute greatly to the growth of
school prestige locally, nationally and at European level by examples of
good practice generated by Project. Eurokid involves in society needs” will
be integrated as a school mini-project and practical example of social ethics
notions taught in social matters of civic education, European citizenship.
In the context of the project, our students were interested in the
integration of the mentally-handicapped with the society. They felt that
there was a lot to be done in this issue. Accordingly, they initiated a
campaign that involves integration with the mentally-handicapped
students. The steps taken in this civic project are as follows:
They announced this campaign in all of the classes at school.
The students brought toys, dolls, puzzles, play dough, books,
paints, clothing items, etc.
Students collected money to buy chocolates and candies.

Hanım Education and Application School (Şakire Hanım Eğitim

IMPRESSIONS OF THE STUDENTS

MY IMPRESSIONS OF VISITING ŞAKİRE HANIM EDUCATION AND
IMPLEMENTATION SCHOOL FOR THE DISABLED
According to the 4th step of Comenius Project, we, Turkish group, visited a
school called Şakire Hanım Education Implementation School, which gives
education to disabled children. We prepared presents for each child
according to their age. When we arrived at the school, all of us were excited
and looking forward to giving the presents. We visited each class and gave
the toys. The impressions of their face when we gave the presents were
worthseeing and the feeling I had was unexplainable. I was both very happy
and rueful. Because they haven’t got the same opportunities with us and it
really made me sad. But on the other hand, I thought that the schools for
disabled children are such good places that they can be improved and they
can join life with the support of the schools.
I learnt from our visit that we should realize how lucky we are being
healthy and we shouldn’t complain about anything we can deal with.

A TRIP TO ŞAKİRE HANIM EDUCATION AND IMPLEMENTATION SCHOOL
FOR THE DISABLED
Our trip to Şakire Hanım school was really instructive and effective. First of
all, we met people from all age who were disabled. They were kind and very

cute. It was an emotional moment for all of us but they were more
emotional than us. I think the only thing they need from all other people is
love –not compassion - their acting is natural and sympathetic. The most
important thing I’ve learnt from that school is ‘no matter how different you
are from others, you can manage everything you believe.’ I saw so many
examples about that. They didn’t give up. They were trying so hard to
connect with life. They were happy. They danced with us. They played
games with us . And they showed us what they learnt from school.

In the scope of this project, we went to Şakire Hanım education and practise
school. And before that, we had bought some presents for them. After that
we went there and gave these presents. It was great to see the smile on
their faces. We played together and after that we went to auditorium and
some students sang and all students who were studying in this school
danced. That day was fun because we made new friends and gained new
experience. Then, we left the school but we felt deeply affected with the
experience we had, because their life was very difficult but in that difficult
life they could smile, so it was nice to make them happy. As a result, we
were happy, too. I think everybody must go somewere like that and meet
these people. Because it is very important experience for a new perspective
on life.

It was a day I will never forget. Because our ordinary life removes us from
humanity. It makes us hard-hearted, callous. At that school, I found myself

in a place which reminds me that I am human and I am away from bad
feelings. There, everything was completely different. There were a lot of
people who waited for attention, help, compassion from me. I attended
their lessons, kissed them. I asked them how they were and what they were
doing. They replied me with a smile in their eyes. This is the best thing
about being a human. Humans are different from animals with their
humanly feelings. But day by day we go away from our feelings and forget
that we are humans. That place reminded me these, and I learnt again that
every person is a candidate for being disabled.
