Digital Imaging
When I was first given the assignment, I decided I would complete it with something I
can use for my unit plan so I won’t have to create another one later. After I decided this, I began
to brainstorm ideas. Since my class has Caucasian, African American, and Latino students, I
decided to find pictures of families similar to theirs. I also added other pictures that displayed
less traditional families that the students may not be familiar with. I did so because they need to
be exposed to different things and understand that every family is different, just as we are all
different. I then decided to create a collage of all of the pictures and put a heading that read
Family. By doing this, I am showing the class that every family is very different, but all of them
are still families. This image will give the students a visual of what a family looks like. It may be
different than what their idea of family may be, but it will open their minds to more possibilities.
The first step in creating this image was to open the images I chose to use. With each
image, I opened it and used the lasso tool to outline only the people and move them to a canvas
image. I did so with all ten images. Then I moved the layers around to place certain images
below and above others. Once I positioned them the way I wanted them, I cropped the collage so
the edges were not rigid. Then, I created a white background and flattened all of the layers and
put the heading above the image.
