Hardware tools are grouped into these four categories:
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools
Hand tools
Cleaning tools
Diagnostic tools
Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools
Static electricity is easily generated by friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing,
hair, fabric, and etc. The friction of moving air alone will charge suspended particles and
cause the buildup of static electrical charges on people and objects in the environment.
Grounded antistatic work mats used with antistatic wrist straps provide the most basic
means for the controlled discharge of electrostatic electricity.
Examples of ESD Tools:
Anti-static wrist strap – Used to prevent ESD
damage to computer equipment.
Figure 29. Anti- static wrist strap
Anti-static mat – Used to stand on or place hardware on to
prevent static electricity from building up.
Figure 30. Anti- static mat
Hand Tools
A hand tool is adevicefor performing work onamaterialor aphysicalsystemusing
onlyhands. Hand tools canbeused manuallyor electricallypowered, usingelectrical
current.
Hand Tools
Tool Description
Flat Head Screwdriver – Used to loosen or tighten slotted screws.
Philips Head Screwdriver – Used to loosen or tighten cross-head
screws.
Torx Screwdriver - Used to loosen or tighten screws that have a
star-like depression on the top, a feature that is mainly found on
laptop.
Hex Driver – Sometimes called a nut driver, is used to tighten
nuts in the same way that a screwdriver tightens screws.
Needle-Nose Pliers – Used to hold small parts.
Tool Description
Wire Cutter – Used to strip and cut wires.
Tweezers – Used to manipulate small parts.
Part Retriever – Used to retrieve parts from location that is too
small for your hand to fit.
Flashlight – Used to light up areas that you cannot see well.
Cleaning Tools
Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining or repairing
computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not damaged
during cleaning. Examples:
Cleaning Tools
Tools Description
Lint-free Cloth – Used to clean different computer components
without scratching or leaving debris.
Compressed Air – Used to blow away dust and debris from
different computer parts without touching the
components.
Cable Ties – Used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a
computer.
Parts Organizer – Used to hold screw, jumpers, fasteners and
other small parts and prevents them from
getting mixedtogether.
Diagnostic Tools
Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new generation of
hardware and operating system update, but that does not mean they are problem-free.
Here are the most popular tools for diagnosing your computer problems:
Diagnostic tools
Tools Description
Multimeter – Used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality
of electricity in computer components.
Loopback Adapter – Used to test the functionality of computer
ports.
Proper Use of ESD Tools
Proper Use of Antistatic Wrist Strap
1. Connect the cable to the metal chassis of the
computer.
2. Wrap the strap around your wrist.
3. The connection will keep your body at the same
voltage (potential) as the computer.
4. Attach the wire on the same side of the equipment as
the arm wearing the antistatic wrist strap to keep the
wire out of the way while you are working.
Figure 31. Proper Use of Anti- static wrist strap
CAUTION: Never wear an antistatic wrist strap if you are repairing a monitor or CRT.
Proper Use of Antistatic Mat
1. Lay the computer on the mat.
2. Connect the computer to the mat
with the cable.
3. Connect the mat to a reliable
electrical ground with its cable.
4. Now, you and the computer are at
ground potential.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Personal Protective Equipment - It refers to protective clothing,
helmets, goggles, or other gear designed to protect the
wearer's body or clothing from injury by electrical hazards,
heat, chemicals, and infection, for job-related occupational
safety and health purposes.
PPE can also be used to protect the working environment from
pesticide application, pollution or infection from the worker (for
example in a microchipfactory).
It is important that students and teachers during their laboratory
period should be required to use personal protective equipment.
 Goggles A large spectacles, with
shields around the rims, for protecting
the eyes from dust, excessive light,
wind, etc.
 Rubber Sole A special type of shoes
used to prevent electrical shock and for
waterproofing and insulating purposes.
 Apron A garment worn over the front
of the body as a protection for one’s
cloth.
 Face Mask A covering for the face to
prevent the inhaling or absorbing dust
andother chemicals
 Gloves The covering material with a
separate sheath for each finger used
for handprotection.
Anti-Static and Safety Precautions
The little shock you experience while you are walking across a
carpeted floor or when you touched a door knob, table, counter
or even another person is a result of static electricity. Static
electricity is the discharge of electricity between two objects
with different electrical potential. Humans can't feel a static
shock until it is several thousand volts strong, but it takes less
than 30 volts to fry a sensitive computer component, such as a
stick of RAM or a processor.
That's why computer technicians and home computer builders
have to guard their computers against the deadly ravages of
static electricity, as well as take steps to avoid injury.
 Safety and Anti-Static Rules

 · Always use an anti-static wrist strap when working on a
computer (except when working on monitors)
 · Always disconnect a computer from the AC power and from any
powered
 peripherals while you are working on it.
 · Always grasp a metal part of the computer chassis with your
bare hand before you touch anything inside. Do this even if you are
wearing an anti-static wristband.
 · Always handle electronic components by a non-conducting
(non-metallic)
 edge. Don't touch the pins or other connectors.
 · Never plug an ATX power supply into AC power unless it is
connected either to a computer's motherboard or to a dummy test
load.
 · Always use a UL-approved surge protector or an
Uninterruptible Power
 Supply that incorporates surge and spike protection.
 · Never eat, drink, or smoke while working on a computer.

  • 3. Hardware tools are grouped into these four categories: Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) tools Hand tools Cleaning tools Diagnostic tools Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools Static electricity is easily generated by friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing, hair, fabric, and etc. The friction of moving air alone will charge suspended particles and cause the buildup of static electrical charges on people and objects in the environment. Grounded antistatic work mats used with antistatic wrist straps provide the most basic means for the controlled discharge of electrostatic electricity. Examples of ESD Tools: Anti-static wrist strap – Used to prevent ESD damage to computer equipment. Figure 29. Anti- static wrist strap
  • 4. Anti-static mat – Used to stand on or place hardware on to prevent static electricity from building up. Figure 30. Anti- static mat Hand Tools A hand tool is adevicefor performing work onamaterialor aphysicalsystemusing onlyhands. Hand tools canbeused manuallyor electricallypowered, usingelectrical current.
  • 5. Hand Tools Tool Description Flat Head Screwdriver – Used to loosen or tighten slotted screws. Philips Head Screwdriver – Used to loosen or tighten cross-head screws. Torx Screwdriver - Used to loosen or tighten screws that have a star-like depression on the top, a feature that is mainly found on laptop.
  • 6. Hex Driver – Sometimes called a nut driver, is used to tighten nuts in the same way that a screwdriver tightens screws. Needle-Nose Pliers – Used to hold small parts. Tool Description Wire Cutter – Used to strip and cut wires.
  • 7. Tweezers – Used to manipulate small parts. Part Retriever – Used to retrieve parts from location that is too small for your hand to fit. Flashlight – Used to light up areas that you cannot see well.
  • 8. Cleaning Tools Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining or repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not damaged during cleaning. Examples: Cleaning Tools Tools Description Lint-free Cloth – Used to clean different computer components without scratching or leaving debris. Compressed Air – Used to blow away dust and debris from different computer parts without touching the components.
  • 9. Cable Ties – Used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a computer. Parts Organizer – Used to hold screw, jumpers, fasteners and other small parts and prevents them from getting mixedtogether.
  • 10. Diagnostic Tools Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new generation of hardware and operating system update, but that does not mean they are problem-free. Here are the most popular tools for diagnosing your computer problems: Diagnostic tools Tools Description Multimeter – Used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality of electricity in computer components. Loopback Adapter – Used to test the functionality of computer ports.
  • 11. Proper Use of ESD Tools Proper Use of Antistatic Wrist Strap 1. Connect the cable to the metal chassis of the computer. 2. Wrap the strap around your wrist. 3. The connection will keep your body at the same voltage (potential) as the computer. 4. Attach the wire on the same side of the equipment as the arm wearing the antistatic wrist strap to keep the wire out of the way while you are working. Figure 31. Proper Use of Anti- static wrist strap CAUTION: Never wear an antistatic wrist strap if you are repairing a monitor or CRT.
  • 12. Proper Use of Antistatic Mat 1. Lay the computer on the mat. 2. Connect the computer to the mat with the cable. 3. Connect the mat to a reliable electrical ground with its cable. 4. Now, you and the computer are at ground potential. Figure 32. Proper Use of Anti- static mat

  • 17. SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Personal Protective Equipment - It refers to protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other gear designed to protect the wearer's body or clothing from injury by electrical hazards, heat, chemicals, and infection, for job-related occupational safety and health purposes. PPE can also be used to protect the working environment from pesticide application, pollution or infection from the worker (for example in a microchipfactory). It is important that students and teachers during their laboratory period should be required to use personal protective equipment.
  • 18.  Goggles A large spectacles, with shields around the rims, for protecting the eyes from dust, excessive light, wind, etc.  Rubber Sole A special type of shoes used to prevent electrical shock and for waterproofing and insulating purposes.  Apron A garment worn over the front of the body as a protection for one’s cloth.
  • 19.  Face Mask A covering for the face to prevent the inhaling or absorbing dust andother chemicals  Gloves The covering material with a separate sheath for each finger used for handprotection.
  • 20. Anti-Static and Safety Precautions The little shock you experience while you are walking across a carpeted floor or when you touched a door knob, table, counter or even another person is a result of static electricity. Static electricity is the discharge of electricity between two objects with different electrical potential. Humans can't feel a static shock until it is several thousand volts strong, but it takes less than 30 volts to fry a sensitive computer component, such as a stick of RAM or a processor. That's why computer technicians and home computer builders have to guard their computers against the deadly ravages of static electricity, as well as take steps to avoid injury.
  • 21.  Safety and Anti-Static Rules   · Always use an anti-static wrist strap when working on a computer (except when working on monitors)  · Always disconnect a computer from the AC power and from any powered  peripherals while you are working on it.  · Always grasp a metal part of the computer chassis with your bare hand before you touch anything inside.
