Survey Responses From 1606 Kosovan Entrepreneurs Who...
Method Sample and research design This study is based on survey responses from 1606 Kosovan
entrepreneurs who completed questionnaire in face to face interviews during December January 2002
2003, 2003 2004, 2004 2005 (thereafter 2002, 2003 and 2004). SME surveys were conducted by
Riinvest Institute for Development Research and one of the authors had a leading role in this research
project. Samples were selected randomly from the business register kept at the Statistical Office of
Kosova and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (2005). Interviews were conducted by experienced and
trained final year students from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Prishtina and monitored
carefully by the Riinvest research team. Respondents were key informants, mainly the owner or the
general of companies. The response rate was very high with an average of 96.4 percent. The exclusion
of these observations might lead to sample selection bias, but in our case this is not a concern as the
non response rate is very small (around 3.6 per cent of total cases) and also our sample remains still
representative (see, Cameron and Trivedi, 2005). Pooling data. The pooled data technique is used to
test set of econometric models of firm growth. The pooled data contains information from three
independent surveys from the period 2002, 2003 2004. An independently pooled cross section
technique is obtained by pooling randomly sampled cross sections at different points in time
(Wooldridge 2006).

Hunting And Feasting
In order to protect vital food sources, past heritages, traditions, and cultural values for future
generations, the government should not ban the practice of hunting wild animals. Author Jacqueline
Thursby argues, in her article Hunting and Feasting in Utah and Idaho that this region is rugged
country; it is no easy task, even today, to make a living there, and wild game continues to serve as a
mainstay for some families (103). Most urban families take for granted the accessibility of the
supermarket; a convenience that is hardly used for these communities in Utah and Idaho, mostly
thriving off of what the earth provides for them. Banning the right to hunt in this region would be
similar to closing down all providers of food in big cities,

Cleveland Indians Argumentative Essay
The Cleveland Indians are a baseball team founded in 1894 (cleveland.indians.mlb.com). Although the
name is obviously racist, in 1894 there unfortunately was not as large of public concern regarding the
treatment of Native Americans. Now, the name is deemed to be offensive, as it should be. The logo
depicts a Native American referred to as Chief Wahoo, an aspect of the team that also creates public
scrutiny. For these reasons, the Cleveland Indians are changing their logo. However, the
implementation of the decision will be put off a year and the team will continue using the name.
Moreover, the logo will still be available on merchandize, enabling the team to profit off of racist
insignia. In 2014, president and CEO of the Cleveland Indians, Mark Shapiro, had already limited the
use of the logo. Thus, evidently, the Cleveland Indians are not doing enough to combat the prejudice
and insensitivity they exhibit through their team name, mascot and logo. The team also is clearly only
publicizing their supposedly monumental, yet actually minute, decision in order to boost public
perception of the organization. This is not a decision done in order to do the right thing; it is a

Redskin is a racial slur and the use of the word is one of the worst examples of a sport team having a
offensive name. Nevertheless, nearly four in five Americans don t think a name change for the team
should be required (ap gfkpoll.com). This lack of consensus about the fact that sports teams shouldn t
be racially insensitive reveals a larger epidemic. The name of these sports teams become so beloved to
some people that they will not be able to change unless the fans realize that the names, logos and
racism present in the teams impotence to modify these aspects are wrong. Fans need to learn to
separate the racism of the monikers from their support of the

Why Corporations Should Not Hire Military Veterans
Military veterans have many characteristics that show good leadership and courage, which is what
companies should be aspiring to have in their employees. Instead, many corporations are purposely
not hiring military veterans; resulting in thousands becoming homeless. Corporations are
discriminating against our soldiers and the government is not endeavoring to help these soldiers either.
Companies automatically assume that vets suffer from mental illnesses, are irrational and violent, and
are uneducated and incompetent. Our government needs to establish more programs that will benefit
our soldiers such as: creating shelter homes; providing them with therapists to help them with newly
developed mental disorders; and allowing them to gain stability by giving them more job
opportunities. There are numerous reasons as to why corporations are choosing to not hire military
veterans. There are two sets of reasons: one being the reasons that corporations tell the public and, two
being what they truly mean but will not announce freely to the public. In the article, 5 Reasons Why
Employers Are Not Hiring Vets by Lisa Nagorny and Dan Pick, student veterans at Wharton s MBA
for Executives program, Nagorny and Pick discuss the interviews they conducted with 87 individuals
and 69 companies. At the end of their study, they concluded five main reasons on why employers do
not hire veterans. Those reasons came down to being: skill translation; negative stereotypes; skill
mismatch; concern

Essay about Farmington Industries
Farmington Industries
Case Write Up
Farmington Industries is a small, publicly traded U.S. based corporation, which produces
programmable control instruments. With high interests in Mexico, the company has expanded to four
Mexican related businesses, which are listed below along with their specific function:
The Maquiladora Assembly Facility This facility is used to assemble imported U.S. manufactured
components into final products for sale mainly in the U.S. Seeing as the majority of sales occur in the
U.S., this facility generates its revenues in USD.
Farmington (Antilles) N.V. This facility is an offshore shell corporation by which the U.S. parent
exports U.S. manufactured products to Mexico and other countries. ... Show more content on

The devaluation of this currency leads to lower costs for the subsidiary, in relation to wages, since the
peso has depreciated against the USD during this time period. The facility can purchase Mexican
pesos with their USD profits at increasingly appealing exchange rates, and then use these pesos to
finance new operations. By doing so, this shows the positive effect of the devaluation of the peso for
the Maquiladora Assembly Facility.
On the other hand, the peso devaluation will not have that much of a positive effect on Farmington
(Antilles) N.V. as the peso depreciates relative to the USD. The result is the subsidiary being
negatively impacted as the USD/peso exchange rate is rising, as they convert revenue earned in pesos
to USD to deposit into U.S. bank accounts. This facility had almost 4 million MXN receivables at the
end of the year. The 1994 average exchange rate is 3.5 MXN/USD, where these 4 million MXNs
would equate to approximately 1.14 million USD. When the exchange rate values the devalued peso at
5.0 MXN/USD, these 4 million MXNs are only equal to 0.80 million USDs, showing a loss of more
than 300,000 USDs. When the exchange rate changes from 4.0 to 5.0 MXN/USD, we can see the loss
the company would experience, and thus the negative impact on this facility.
Farmington Industries was not very well prepared for the December 20, 1994 devaluation. Farmington
Industries business model creates a hedge by billing the majority of their transactions

The Social And Social Problems And Effects Of Smartphones
Nearly all of today s society has a smartphone in hand. As a whole, we depend on this phone in the
same aspect as we did a baby blanket in our childhood. Major mental health issues, such as lack of
social skills, memory problems, and stress are due to this technology. These are some of the biggest
concerns when it comes to owning a phone, unfortunately, the effects are not fully realized. These
devices have brought several problems in user s lives, despite supposedly making it easier. Everyday
human social interactions are suffering due to the part smartphones play. Furthermore, being
connected through this technology is something that is bragged upon, but users are not as connected as
they would like to think. Unfortunately this constant communication gives a false sense of connection,
because when they are face to face there is little interaction. Turkle states that communication between
family members when Parents text and do email...while children complain about not having their
parents full attention ( 3.) Parents are no longer paying attention to what their child is doing whether it
be a baseball game or dance competition they are overwhelmed with demands on their time. Walsh et
al. says that the behavioral reaction is a need to compulsively check their device[s] for any messages
or updates (qtd. In Hardwood et al. 268). It is not just parents that have this problem. All of society is
too busy looking at their smartphone to notice what is going on around them.

Improving HTTP Performance Using Stateless TCP
Improving HTTP Performance Using Stateless TCP In this paper a server side approach is made
which can reduce processing load per connection. The advantages of running web servers over a basic
transport protocol that is similar to TCP are studied here. The stateless TCP for HTTP decreases the
kernel resources required per TCP connection. So it increases the number of client initiated HTTP
connections per second. Stateless TCP modifications decreases the server s CPU usage and other TCP
memory requirements. This helps to serve small webpages under overloaded situations. Two
Algorithms (David A Hayes, Improving http performance using stateless tcp, 2011) are mentioned that
show the basic operation of stateless TCP, one for incoming packets and one for outgoing packets
from server. These include few rules to react to incoming control packets and also information to deal
with application data. Algorithm 1: incoming Every TCP packet is captured which arrives at port 80
and following operations are performed, 1. If it s a TCP SYN packet, send back a TCP SYN/ACK 2. If
TCP DATA packet a) Store ack number and start timer b) Send TCP ACK packet back to sender,
correct sequence and ack number c) Send TCP payload to server via UDP socket 3. If a TCP FIN
packet, send back TCP FIN/RST/ACK and delete data and timer stored at 2a 4. If none of above drop
the packet Algorithm 2: outgoing Event 1: On a local UDP socket send a request on port 80 and

BOOK 1 Ready to give up, after waiting more than an hour for her daughter, suddenly Katherine saw
the old Malibu coming into the parking lot, and hid behind the building. Katherine peeked around the
corner and watched Marlene kiss the driver passionately before waltzing across the doctor s parking
lot. Unlocking the door the new red Mercedes, the raven haired beauty with a reputation for being
high maintenance drove out of the parking lot and down the street.
With her thoughts lingering on the last hours spent with her lover, Marlene entered the garage and
breathed a sigh of relief when she failed to see her husband s car. Exiting the Mercedes, straightening
her clothes, she picked up the mail before entering the house. After placing ... Show more content on

immediately.
Go ahead, and talk to Jerry, I don t care! I have no idea why Frank called my phone, Marlene said, My
goodness, Mother. I ve only spoken to him a few times.
If that is true, why do you park your Mercedes in different garages around town at least four days a
week? Katherine asked.
Surprised by what her mother said, Marlene asked, And just where did you get that information?
I followed you and watched you park your car and get into another car, Katherine said.
Oh, come on Mom, you were following the wrong car. I don t have the only red Mercedes in Jackson
Heights. Good God, Mom! I would never jeopardize my family s happiness, Marlene said,
sarcastically, waving her hands. Concerned with her daughter s happiness, Katherine said, Honey, don

love you, Mother, and I do expect you to keep your mouth shut. I swear I ll see you in your grave
before you cause me trouble. I m warning you, leave it alone! Although shocked, Katherine failed to

Ancient Christian Worship By Andrew B. Mcgowan
Zoryana Nichipor Christianity Western Culture Box #390 Word Count: Book Review of Ancient
Christian Worship: Early Christian Practices in Social, Historical, and Theological Perspective
Throughout this book, Andrew B. McGowan thoroughly informs us on each cultural background and
formation of the different types of acts of worship throughout the early Christian church. We see
through this information that the way the Church worships has evolved into something completely
different from what it once was. In one form or another we are forced to appreciate how the early
Christians worshipped and, I would even assert, are challenged to bring these traditions into our own
mentality of worship. If we are to look to the New Testament and how worship is referred to, it is a
great deal about ethos or a Christian way of life, but relatively little about the specifics of distinctive
liturgical practice or performance. In chapter one of McGowan s book, we see a compare and contrast
given with how the early church worshiped more communally as opposed to how we worship today;
which is more aesthetic and internal. McGowan reiterates numerously that worship in the New
Testament is a subject of service, reverence and ethics. They were not merely one sacramental part of
a community or worship life but the central act around or within which others reading and preaching,
prayer and prophecy were arranged. The New Testament was in the setting of a very communal
culture. And

A Research Study On Helicopter Parenting Essay
College life for the twenty first century student is not what it used to be. According to an American
College Health Association National College Health Assessment survey, eighty five percent of college
students feel so tremendously overwhelmed they walk through the day blind and just hoping things
work out (Fisher). Students lack the ability to focus and manage everything that is piled on them
during class. The term helicopter parenting was first common in the 1990 s, but was first used in 1969.
Now, forty seven years later, helicopter parenting has become prevalent in college students lives and
the culture around people. A helicopter parent is one who takes an overprotective or excessive interest
in the life of their child or children. Helicopter parenting does not start out randomly as a college
student; helicopter parenting is a process that develops results.
The helicopter parent issue is prevalent to many people. People from Doctor Amy Joyce to stay at
home mom Jamie Porter have done studies to explain the effects of helicopter parenting. Psychologists
such as Chris Meno have done research and testings to collect data on helicopter parented children.
The issue of helicopter parenting is not just concerning children; it is concerning people across the
country.
President of Frostburg State University told Amy Joyce parents have called him to settle a dispute
between their child and their roommate. Joyce explains in her piece How Helicopter Parents Are

Taking a Look at Neoconservatism
Neoconservatism
Neoconservatism is one of the most well known and distinctive sociopolitical trends to emerge in the
1970s. In modern politics, many neoconservatives are often dyed in the wool rightists; however the
movement was originally conceived and shaped by a collective of former leftists and liberal
Democrats who had become disillusioned with the left due to the many political struggles of the
nation during the 1960s, and what they perceived as guilt ridden anti Americanism embraced by the
left in the wake of the anti Vietnam War movement. (Nuechterlein 1996) In fact, Merriam Webster s
dictionary defines neoconservative as a former liberal espousing political conservatism. During the
1960s, Neoconservatives were staunchly opposed to communism, the counterculture movement,
particularly the political radicalism and its animus against authority, custom, and tradition. (Ball and
Dagger 2013)
In 1965, two prominent New York neoconservatives, columnist Irving Kristol, and sociologist Daniel
Bell established The Public Interest, a quarterly public policy journal focusing on the political
economy of the United States and culture. The magazine often espoused dissatisfaction with social
reforms of the 1960s, which were viewed as having destroying the moral values of the country. The
magazine would go on to become the leading neoconservative publication for the next 40 years.
Throughout the 1970s, as many neoconservatives rose to political prominence, giving the

The Differences Between Legalism And Confucianism
Q: Han Fei Zi was known for synthesizing and refining the legalist theories and practices that had
been developed before him. Explain his views on law, statecraft and power. Comment on the
fundamental differences between Legalism and Confucianism.
Han Fei Tzu:
Legalism, is an ancient Chinese philosophy concerned with the art of rulership and the stability of the
state. Along with hundreds of other philosophical schools, legalism emerged during the Warring States
Period (453 422 BC), a time of intense political and intellectual turmoil. Unlike other schools of
thought, legalism defined the strength of the state, through a system of punishments and rewards,
propagated by common laws. Neither concerning itself with Confucian idealization of the past, or the
morality of man, legalisms pragmatic system of governance, as best defined by Han Fei Zi, ended the
hundreds of years of warfare and unified China. As aforementioned, Legalism was at the forefront of
philosophical discourse during the Warring States Period. The Warring States Period was a time of
both immense growth and conflict, as the remaining seven states fought over the dominance of China.
Although through much of the Warring States Period, the Zhou Dynasty claimed dominance over
China, by the end of the two hundred and twenty five year long period, the Kingdom of Qin emerged
victorious. While much of the Warring States Period consisted of warfare, the era also saw the spread
of philosophical ideas throughout

LGBT Community and Discrimination.
When one hears the words LGBT and Homosexuality it often conjures up a mental picture of people
fighting for their rights, which were unjustly taken away or even the social emergence of gay culture
in the world in the1980s and the discovery of AIDS. However, many people do not know that the
history of LGBT people stretches as far back in humanity s history, and continues in this day and age.
Nevertheless, the LGBT community today faces much discrimination and adversity. Many think the
problem lies within society itself, and often enough that may be the case. Society holds preconceptions
and prejudice of the LGBT community, though not always due to actual hatred of the LGBT
community, but rather through lack of knowledge and poor media ... Show more content on

Data also showed Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual youth were twice as likely than heterosexual youth have
considered attempting suicide in the past year (31 percent vs. 14 percent). Other research suggests that
youth that identifies as transgender or transsexual also experience emotional distress; one fourth
reported a prior suicidal attempt.
Research seems to supporting the theory that negative experiences resulting from LGBT stigma can
lead to chronic stress contributes to emotional distress among LGBT teens and adults. Many other
studies investigated the consequnces of stressor on the mental health of LGBT youth. These studies
usually find support for association among stressors associated with being LGBT and poorer mental
health.
Mediation analyses showed that perceived discrimination accounted for increased depressive
symptomology among LGBT males and females and accounted for an elevated risk of self harm and
suicide ideation among LGBT males. Perceived discrimination is a likely contributor to emotional
distress among LGBT youth. (Joanna Almeida)
According to a study as many as 93 percent of teenagers have heard words that were derogatory in
nature about sexual orientation with half of the teens who heard those words in the community and
every day in school. While 78 percent of gay or perceived to be students are teased and bullied both in
their schools and communities. LGBT teens live

Comparing Parents In The Glass Menagerie By James Williams
My parents love to live vicariously through me, especially my mother, and while I understand their
inclination to do this, it can make them a bit controlling of my actions. Williams exhibits in The Glass
Menagerie the damaging effects of overbearing parents on the mental and emotional growth of their
children. In the play, the mother inhibits the development of her children because she tries to control
her children s lives, which takes away the ability to become independent and focus on personal needs.
Amanda treats Laura like a child and constantly makes decisions for her, and she and keeps him from
enjoying his life. Amanda belittles Laura s self ownership which makes Laura immature and helpless
as an adult. When the subject of gentleman callers comes up, Amanda addresses Laura, saying, How
many do you suppose we re going to entertain this afternoon? [...] [reappearing, airily] What? No one
not one? You must be joking! [Laura nervously echoes her laugh] (Williams 18). Amanda is caught up
in her dreams of marriage for Laura, made clear by her enthusiastic tone and body language, but Laura
s uncomfortable laugh shows how she is not amused by her mother s aspirations. Amanda is only
focused on what she wants for Laura, but she should really be concerned with what Laura wants for
herself. In addition, Amanda cannot accept the fact that her daughter is not going to have any suitors;
she denies reality and tries to bring Laura into her world of illusions. This irresponsible parenting
causes Laura to become the childish adult that she is. When Amanda questions where Laura was going
instead of business college, Laura explains that, I went in the art museum and the bird houses at the
Zoo. I visited the penguins every day! [...] Lately I ve been spending most of my afternoons in the
Jewel Box, that big glass house where they raise the tropical flowers (21). Laura is twenty three years
old and she is getting excited about visiting attractions meant for kids. She would rather explore the
Zoo, an art museum, or a greenhouse than attend college, exhibiting her immature and irresponsible
mindset. This juvenile behavior is what leads to Laura s helplessness. While on the fire escape,
Amanda tells Laura to make a

China s Become A Global Superpower And Its Transformation...
I once regretted that I majored in Chinese Language and Literature. Even after completing my Master
s degree in China I could not see the practical use of my studies. However, now I think it has become
my strength to comprehend Chinese Language and culture as a student who seeks to research on the
International Studies related to China as a Ph.D. candidate. During my study in China, I witnessed
China s emergence as a global superpower and its transformation from a development aid recipient to
a donor country. This particularly intrigued me more than its language and culture. The transformation
was similar to my home country, Korea, but this time I was able to witness it. China s growing foreign
aid started to have a significant impact on the landscape of the global development community and
became a formidable alternative to existing Official Development Assistant (ODA). A non OECD
country, has become the center of controversies with its foreign aid policies. I was intrigued with this
phenomenon and encountered a question: How do developed countries (traditional donors) and
developing countries (development aid recipients) work with China to enhance positive developments
and minimize frictions? In the pursuit of solution to my question, I enrolled the second Master s
degree in Public Policy at KDI School of Public Policy and Management where I gained a great deal
of academic knowledge about public policy, global governance and political economy. Also, I have

William Carlos Williams s The Twentieth Century
The early twentieth century in the United States was a time of rapid change combined with rapid loss.
As new technologies designed to improve everyday living became available to people across the
nation, a new culture was rising in America: a culture that both afforded comfort and thrived on
capitalism. There were many critics of this new America, including poets Ezra Pound and William
Carlos Williams. The aforementioned poets reflected on a fast changing America through exploitation.
As an American, Poet William Carlos Williams believed that the twentieth century culture in America
was at a decline. With modern inventions and the growth of a capitalist America, suburbanites and
rural Americans were suffering from the urbanization and industrialization of America. William Carlos
Williams lived in the suburbs and worked as a family physician, where he observed much of his
suburban America (. Through his observations, on people he could see a generalization of what was
changing throughout the twentieth century and its effects on people like himself. His poetry
appreciated America for what it was while critiquing what he saw it becoming, a degeneration of rural
communities which meant a decline of American culture. (Monacell, 125). For example, Williams
poem To Elsie demonstrates a critique on American culture that has been tainted by modernity. Elsie,
as in the To Elsie , was a nursemaid who worked for Williams family. Williams finds in Elsie an
analogue for

Anabolic Steroids Should Be Banned Research Paper
There are many substances that are banned in the world of athletics. Almost no matter what governing
body you look at for a sports association the list of banned substances is the same. The USADA, the
NCAA, and WADA are the three largest organizations that I have found and all of them bann the same
substances. There list include, but are not limited too stimulants, anabolic agents, beta blockers,
diuretics and other masking agents, growth factors, street drugs, and anything chemically related to
items on the list. It also continued into procedures that it considered illegal which included blood
doping, gene doping, local anesthetics, and beta 2 agonists ( 2016 17 NCAA Banned Drug List 2016).

With athletes these aren t really viewed as performance enhancers but are illegal, so are still placed on
the banned substance list. The common effects of almost any street drug is it gives a feeling of
euphoria, and also makes that person feel invincible, which are the side effects that make people like
them. They also cause nausea and vomiting, the failure to recognize injury, and eventually your body
develops a dependence on them. One of the specific street drugs I m gonna mention is marijuana.
While it s not viewed as a hard drug it still has side effects that people can either view as fun or
dangerous. These side effects impair short term memory, increased heart rate, difficulty concentrating,
and slowed reflexes. It also causes mood swings and impairs comprehensive thinking ( Effects of
Performance Enhancers 2014). These side effects happen very quickly due to how marijuana is
usually introduced to a person system. The reason it acts so quickly is explained on the National
Institute on Drug Abuse website, When a person smokes marijuana, THC quickly passes from the
lungs into the bloodstream. The blood carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout

Intercultural Identity
An individual s culture, upbringing, privileges, orientation etc. all affect how one views the world. In
order to confront difficult issues, such as social justice, one must realize how their positionality effects
their epistemologies. Takacs (2002) states that when we develop the skill of understanding how we
know what we know, we acquire a key to lifelong learning (p. 28). Being able to discern why we view
the world in a certain way leads to truths about one s own identity, such as their privileges in society.
However, these identities are not always apparent. Tatum (2000) states that it is our targeted identities
that hold our attention, while the dominant identities go unexamined (p. 7). In order to develop a
holistic sense of self, we must examine all parts of our being. As my interviewer remarked: you have
to know who you are, and how you show up in pieces, and the impact that may give to others, because
that definitely contributes (A. Rubango, personal communication, September 13, 2017). Every person
has their own multitude of identities. My interviewer s own identity contains numerous components as
a female, an immigrant from the Congo, and having a middle class SES. Through her many target and
dominant identities, she has acknowledged how these pieces have given her a unique viewpoint on the
world, and how they have affected her view on issues, such as those pertaining to social justice.
Exploring one s identity is crucial, but it is vital on the

Personal Narrative- Homeless Man Essay
Personal Narrative Homeless Man
My friends often describe me as a cynic and a pessimist. For the most part, they re right. Sentiment
loses value when it permeates one s attitudes and behavior just as the value of a commodity decreases
as it becomes ubiquitous, so as a rule I reserve expressing sentiment for rare occasions that I deem
worthy. Fortunately, even the harshest cynics are surprised sometimes.
To begin, most people in my hometown know who Mike is. But I would bet that ninety nine percent of
those people don t know Mike s name. Mike is a homeless man who lives at the public library. He
didn t really attract my attention until several months ago; since then, I have found him impossible to
ignore.

With guilt welling up inside my chest for driving past Mike so many previous times and overlooking
him, I couldn t make myself look away.
As the light turned green, I sat for a moment, not moving, and asked myself what I was going to do.
Then I accelerated slowly, waiting for the car on my left to pass as I changed over to the left lane. I
made four left turns at four consecutive stoplights until I approached the library again. Pulling into the
library s parking lot, I turned off my lights, radio, and heat. As I opened the car door, the cold air stung
me like a quick slap to my face. Slowly and uncertainly, I walked toward Mike.
The street was eerily quiet as I crossed. So was Mike. Staring at me unwaveringly, he said nothing as I
approached. The crow s feet framing his eyes, the ridges in his forehead, and the crinkles in his cheeks
still stand out in my mind. How many nights had he lain on that bench, covering his face as the wind
whipped against it? Now he hugged his body tightly. He was wearing an old pair of tan khakis, a shirt
that I couldn t see clearly, and a light multi colored jacket, its sleeves ending above his pale wrists,
that was just slightly too small and clung to his body. As I gave him the money in my wallet, he took it
slowly and stared at it for a second in disbelief. Although the street in front of the library is usually an

ING5 Case Study
The ING (INhibitor of Growth) family of genes and proteins (ING1 ING5) was identified in 1996,
from PCR mediated subtractive hybridization between a normal mammary epithelial cell strain and
several transformed breast cancer cell lines, followed by an in vivo functional screen for
tumourigenesis1. The ING proteins target histone acetyltransferase (HAT) and histone deacetylase
(HDAC) complexes to the H3K4me3 mark, altering histone acetylation and gene expression2. ING4
was identified by computational analysis and is expressed in various tissues; also several splice
variants and transcripts were described for this protein3 5. The ING5 protein of the ING family, was
described by computational homology search and shares a high amino acid ... Show more content on

Also, due to the presence of the LID in all INGs, we will study if ING5 and ING4 are capable of
interacting with Lamin A in differentiating stem cells and the importance of this interaction to stem
cell differentiation.
To achieve these objectives, we will use three different mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell lines (R1, D3,
E14), already present in the lab. In ongoing studies, it was noted that these cells presented all five of
the ING genes with altered expression when they were induced to differentiate. We will first study if
altering ING5 and ING4 expression using siING5 and siING4 to decrease it and pCI ING5, pCI ING4
to increase levels, will affect differentiation and the self renewal rate of these lines. We will use sphere
formation assays to assess self renewal. We will also induce differentiation with these different
expression constructs, thus measuring the influence of these proteins in the process. To determine the
degree of differentiation with varying expression of the ING genes, we will use flow cytometry to
follow changes in stem cells markers, such as OCT4, OLIG2 and Nestin16.
Previous studies from our group already described the LID and the interaction of several ING proteins
with Lamin A12. In the conditions used in this study, ING4 was co precipitated with Lamin A.
However, even though ING5 presents the LID, it was not co precipitated12. In this work we aim to
evaluate the effects of the possible interaction between the ING4 and

Mental Changes In Macbeth
In the play Macbeth, the main character s mental state due to the prophecy changes over time. William
Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as different figures though the play. And his main changes are mostly
caused by people around him and also himself hesitating. At the beginning the witches said Fair is
foul/and foul is fair (1/1/11), so even the prophecy seems positive to Macbeth, everything has been
established already. One of the main element of Macbeth s downfall is his mentally weakness.
In Act one scene 3, when Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches for the first time and knows the
first prophecy about Macbeth being the King, Macbeth was not excited about the fair news:

Reputation and interest has made Macbeth become ruthless. He could do anything in order to achieve
his goal. But still he is not as strong as Lady Macbeth, because of his instability, he cannot bear this
change in such a short time. He started to have the same delusion as he had when Duncan died. When
brains were out, the man would die,/ And there an end.But now they rise again (3/4/95 96). Macbeth is
consumed by his fear. When he sees Banquo s ghost, he has already lost all sense of reason. Such a
huge change in such a short time clearly shows the main reason that causes Macbeth s downfall to the
audience, in such a mental condition, he seems like another person rather than the one who was

Problems Associated With Hepatitis C
Introduction:
Indigenous peoples in Canada (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) are recognized as having a significantly
increased hepatitis C disease burden in comparison to non Indigenous Canadians (Uhanova, Tate,
Tataryn, Minuk, 2013). Due to over representation in many groups considered high risk for hepatitis C
transmission, such as those living in unstable housing or engaging in injection drug use, Indigenous
peoples living in urban settings are particularly affected (Miller et al., 2010). Recent studies have
shown that comprehensive research on the risk factors associated with hepatitis C acquisition in urban
Indigenous populations is lacking (Uhanova et al., 2013; Plitt et al., 2011). Furthermore, available
evidence suggests that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, it will assist in identifying the most salient hepatitis C risk factors for inclusion in a survey to
be administered to a sample of urban Indigenous persons living with hepatitis C.
To meet these objectives, peer reviewed databases were searched using the SFU Library Fast Search
function. The following search terms were utilized: ( Indigenous OR Aboriginal OR First Nations OR
Métis OR Inuit ) AND ( hepatitis C ) AND ( urban ) AND ( risk factor ). After the initial serch, all
articles published prior to 2008 were excluded, yielding 1,890 results. Upon reviewing the most
relevant abstracts, five articles were deemed to be the most focused on hepatitis C risk factors in urban
Indigenous populations and included in this review.
This review will draw out and summarize key themes and findings from those five studies. Next,
potential gaps in the research related to hepatitis C risk factors for this population will be examined. It
will will then conclude with a brief discussion of future directions for research, as well as the
implications of these risk factors on hepatitis C policy and interventions for urban Indigenous
populations.

The Negative Effects Of Music In Education
Each year there is that one student ; the kid with the headphones, the kid who never appears to be
listening, when you (the teacher) go to ask them to take the headphones out, they tell you that the
music helps them. This is the student who panics at the word test, and struggles to pay attention when
they do not have their headphones in, they have a hard time with other kids. As a teacher it s your job
to make sure all students follow the rules, and focus in the classroom. You may not be trying to make
it hard for them, you are just trying to make sure they learn. Many may feel that students can not learn
or comprehend when they have a headphone on, however research shows that students who listen to
music have better behaviour, less stress, and higher grade scores. For some people music is a
distraction, it is more like an added stress, and it doesn t help. Many teachers included have the
mindset that music does not help, and when there is little information supporting music in classrooms,
their point is understandable. For instance, according to Susan Hallam and John Price, historically
there have been many claims regarding the beneficial effects of music on behavior and development,
but there has been little empirical work to verify them . If only a few studies have been conducted,
how do we know the accuracy of the tests, or if they were modified to show a specific result? During
one of the experiments, they discovered that when music was played throughout the whole

Young Goodman Brown Mood
Young Goodman Brown, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story about a man who ends up losing
his positive vision of all those who he used to look up to because of the wickedness of sin and the way
in which it turns good people bad so abruptly. In the quote above, the message that is being stated is
that the devil himself is not as terrible in its own skin and flesh, but as soon as he takes on the persona
or the body of another being, then the effect of his evil is magnified. However, Young Good Brown
focuses itself on a much deeper concept. In Hawthorne s, Young Goodman Brown, the elements and
ideas of mood, tempo, theme, and empathy, that arise from a simple, small, yet powerful quote, all
play essential roles in describing the idea ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Goodman discovers that even highly respected people in the town of Salem fall victim to the force of
darkness. However, it is important to analyze that the individuals fall to sinful actions because of the
fact that the real threat of evil is quiet and lurking. In one instance, the second traveler states, sit here
and rest yourself a while; and when you feel like moving again, there is my staff to help you along.
Further proving the point of the way in which evil works, the second traveler, or the devil, never
forces Brown to attend the ceremony that takes place near the end of the short story, he only
encourages him to; however, the reader already knows that Brown intends to attend the ceremony
regardless. So, evil or the devil, simply aid us in doing what is already in our intention to do; though,
the actual action comes from what is already in our hearts to do. This is due in part to the natural
curiosity, again, that comes with being human. Humans are inclined to sin and the seeming less,
harmless, decisions that one makes on a day to day basis add up to dominate our very nature, just like
Brown s small decisions along his journey in the forest lead him to his final destiny. Thus, through a

The Assumption Proposal
Hamilton s economic policies, although created to help the country as a whole, are directed to benefit
the rich and mainly northern states, and not the poorer more southern states. Separating the rich from
the poor will only divide the country more, and create more economic problems for the poorer parts of
the new country. Hamilton s assumption plan and establishment of the Central Bank will only divide
the country into rich and poor parts and create economic and social tension. The Assumption Plan is
Hamilton s belief that all of the state s debt, from the revolution, should be taken on by the entire
nation. In order to fix the national debt, Hamilton wanted to pay back all states and national debts

Southern Plantations would again have to fund Northern businesses, putting more of a financial strain
on the South than on the North. Putting a tax on whiskey hurts the farmers who grow the grain that is
the basis for whiskey. Many of the farmers can barely afford to process the grain, let alone pay an
additional tax on it. In addition the farmers are having to take a financial hit for the Northern States
who do not process the ingredients for whiskey. Again this tax is only beneficial to the richer northern
states separating the rich from the poor once again. As for creating a Central Bank, having a set
standard for currency will allow all the states to interact in commerce with ease and in moderate
supply, keep the economy from falling into recession. But if it there is a surplus, the value of money
can drop and cause inflation and recession. Although this would help the government financially,
Jefferson and many others opposed to Hamilton s ideas, because the bank was just another way to
make the rich richer, and the poor poorer. The constitutionality of it was questionable, because the
Constitution doesn t blatantly say the government has the power to create private corporations. The

The Road Not Taken
In line one, Frost introduces the elements of his primary metaphor, the diverging roads. Lines two to
three expresses the speaker s disappointment with his human limitations; he must make a choice. The
choice is not easy, since quot;long I stood quot; before coming to a decision. Lines four and five
examine the path as best the narrator can. However his vision is limited because the path bends and is
covered over. These lines indicate that although the speaker would like to acquire more information,
he is prevented from doing so because of the nature of his environment. In the following three lines,
lines six through eight, the speaker indicates that the second path is a more attractive choice because it

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Has worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In the leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first foe another day!
Yet knowing how way leads onto way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
The reader can just picture Robert Frost walking in a wooded area of the New Hampshire forest when
suddenly he comes upon a trail that divides and he wrote he Road Not Taken? A poem that has been
used in countless high school graduation speeches and as a metaphor for any situation in which a
person must make an important decision. The simple themes have always appealed to Frost s readers

Ellis Island Immigration
Hundreds of years have past since many people immigrated here, to The New World. Life was
difficult and many people died on the way here. If traveling by boat, it took about 2 3 weeks at sea.
About one half of the immigrants docked in New York City and in Pennsylvania. Some immigrants
went to Ellis Island before getting to America starting from 1892 until 1954. On Ellis Island, everyone
got inspected for diseases and/or disabilities, in order, to make sure that these people coming in could
support the United States economy. The inspections were one of the most dreaded parts about the trip,
because if someone was not accepted, they would be sent back. The New World s population grew
rapidly from the 1700s to the 1900s because people were trying to get away from crop failure, raising
taxes, famine, religious restrictions, executions and/or to have a chance at a better life. We are not sure
why, but Hans Davit Merkey, age 17 came to America from Switzerland on September 16, 1736.

The Differences Of Alexander Hamilton And Thomas Jeffersons
Like many in their time, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were friends and on the same side
to absolve colonial ties with Great Britain. But once the war was over and independence was
documented in the Treaty of Paris, the new business of creating a new nation was at hand. During this
time, it became apparent that those who shared the same side during the revolution would now find
themselves at odds with one another. Both men had visions and desires for the new nation. However,
nearly one hundred years later and following the civil war, one vision in particular, was closer to
reality than the other. Both of these men were fundamental in the birth of this nation, but their views
on government, economics, and politics differ substantially. Economically speaking, Hamilton wanted
a growing and thriving society based on trade and large manufacturing companies. In contrast,
Jefferson envisioned a society that was based mainly on the presence of many small farmers. Jefferson
particularly did not want large amounts of manufacturing to be done in the US. He argued that
manufactured goods could be imported from Europe, while the US could remain primarily agrarian.
During the Reconstruction period, the South went through a major reconstruction and rebuilding
phase. Although farming was still a large part of the economy, large manufacturing facilities emerged
as well. The increase in large manufacturing facilities and international trade mirrored the vision of
Hamilton much more so than Jefferson s. Jefferson and Hamilton differed widely in their views of
politics and the structure of society. Jefferson envisioned an egalitarian country vs Hamilton s
aspirations of a more stratified society. Jefferson wanted pure equality for everyone regardless of
social, economic, or background. In contrast, Hamilton wanted a growing manufacturing society were
owners of factories and large industries were politically more powerful than the people that worked
for them. Although the Reconstruction was designed to create a perfect equal rights society, other than
freeing the slaves, it failed miserably and was unlike Jefferson s vision of an egalitarian society.
Although the slaves were free, they still didn t receive equal

Hypothesis Of Anti Dsg1 And Anti-Dibins
Multiple hits hypotheses
Recent evidence has indicated that besides anti Dsg1 and anti Dsg3 antibodies, patients develop
antibodies against additional desmosomal (i.e. desmocollins, plakins) and nondesmosomal proteins,
such as cell membrane receptors (nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, pemphaxin, thyroperoxidase and
some other annexins). Volker et al. pointed out that desmocollin 3 is expressed throughout the basal,
spinous and lower granular layer. Blocking of Dsg3 function with a monoclonal antibody led to the
formation of intraepidermal blisters. Nondesmosomal autoantigens such as pemphaxin and 9

The mechanisms of apoptosis in PV may be based on the PV IgG triggered activation of signalling
pathways, such as the epidermal growth factor receptor activation dependent intracellular signalling

understanding the mechanisms of apoptosis is pivotal for the development of more specific therapies.

The basal cell shrinkage hypothesis and the apoptolysis theory
Studies reported that PV acantholysis mainly occurs in the superior basal layer, and is generally
characterized by tombstone like transformation of basal cells. Claude et al. proposed a new hypothesis
of pemphigus pathogenesis in 2006, which suggests that after the pathogenic PV autoantibody binds to
the keratinocyte receptor, a series of signal transduction pathways trigger the rupture of the
cytoskeleton, resulting in the collapse and shrinkage of the keratinocytes. This hypothesis explains
why PV acantholysis mainly occurs at the basal layer, even though the keratinocytes in the superior
basal layer remain connected. In 2009, a novel term, apoptolysis , was proposed by

Colleges Should Require Class Attendance
Does your attendance record reflect your final grade in college? No not because the professor will
mark you down a certain percentage of your grade, but because of the relationship between students
that show up for class and the ones that regularly skip. When I started attending college, I was a bit
confused why such a large percentage of students weren t attending class. It seemed as the quarter
moved further along, class attendance went down. After spending a bit of time on google, I found a
few statistics that reflect why I believe class attendance should be mandatory. On the contrary, some
students will say that they should have the freedom to decide if they want to go to class, because they
are now adults. However, to improve students grades and school drop out rates. Colleges should
require class attendance. Building in class continuity will help prepare young adults for the work
world and requiring class attendance will help develop students for a thriving career. Fortunately, in

Nonprofit Hospital
Should we receive our treatment, nonprofit or for profit hospitals? Many people would say there is
little distinction between the two. One can receive adequate treatment at either institution; however,
some would say they have specific differences in how care is administered. This work will make
informative comparisons between the two institutions, argue the merits, and explain how they both
operate to save lives.
First, let s look at the organization of a non profit hospital. A non profit hospital is by definition one
that exists solely to be at the service of the community s healthcare needs. One of the most important
distinctions about a non profit hospital is that no person or company makes any money due to non
profit hospitals. Therefore, all of the income received by a non profit hospital is to be used to help not
only the patients, improve the overall health of a particular community.
At the present time, there are about 2,800 non profit hospitals in the United States (Shah et al, 2007).

The quality of care can arguably be based more on policies of individual hospitals and who they
employ rather than its financial circumstances, some researchers have determined certain differences
between how patients are treated in nonprofit and for profit organizations (Mueller, 2016). Nonprofits
may not offer the best quality when it comes down to upgraded technology because they find it hard to
find funding (Mueller, 2016). For profit hospitals usually have more capital, which provides them with
state of the art equipment. George Washington University on the other hand have stated that the two
hospitals are equal in how they administer care and treat their patients. There is nothing saying that the
quality of care given at each institution more effective than the other. The difference lies in the type of

International Trade Law Flexibilities And Their Utilization
3. International Trade Law Flexibilities and their Utilization in Africa
Thirty nine African states are in the WTO. These states have the duty to comply with the WTO
treaties, which among others includes the TRIPS Agreement. The Agreement requires states to respect
the rights of patent holders over their products. Accordingly, only the patent owner has an exclusive
right to make, use, to offer for sale, sell, or import the product. Nevertheless, amendments to the
TRIPS Agreement issued exceptions that favor the public health needs of least developed countries.
Among the thirty nine WTO member states from Africa twenty four are direct beneficiaries of these
flexibilities as they are included in the Least Developed Country list of the UN. Four of the exceptions
to the TRIPS Agreement and their use in Africa are discussed below.
3.1. Compulsory License
As per the main TRIPS Agreement the government of the country where the patent is registered was
allowed to authorize the supply of the product only for domestic market without the consent of the
patent owner. Amendment to the TRIPS agreement introduced the compulsory license exception,
which allows countries to allow production and sale of patented pharmaceutical products to least
developed countries, and to countries that requested the application of compulsory license exception,
without the patent holder s consent.
Utilization of compulsory license requires proper regulation and planning from governments of both

These taxes prevented counties from selling the goods they needed to earn the money to repay loans to
the U.S. banks. In a three year period over 9,000 banks went bankrupt or had to close their doors to
avoid bankruptcy which led to a decline in purchasing powers. When the banks started failing people
lost their saving because the banks were uninsured. The banks weren t as willing to offer new loans.
At the same time this was occurring, there was the distribution of unequal income. Businesses were
showing great profits during the 1920 s, however the working class only got a small portion of this
wealth with their low wages. People with low incomes purchased merchandise on credit. People
thought that they had more money to spend on materialistic possessions using credit. Advertising

they were repossessed. Once the slowing of manufactured goods occurred, inventory accumulated and

Democracy Was Not Suitable For Burma
From 1948 1962, the country existed as a democratic republic, but was largely dysfunctional as there
were continued insurgencies by different ethnic and political factions, such as the Red Flag
Communists, the White Flag Communists, the Thirty Comrades, the Revolutionary Burma Army, and
the Karen National Union. In 1962 General Ne Win and the Revolutionary Council led a military
Junta that seized control of the Government. They deposed of Prime Minister U Nu and openly
declared that Parliamentary democracy was not suitable for Burma. (Hoare 2015) The highly
superstitious and oppressive leadership of Ne Win can be observed in what was labeled The Burmese
Path to Socialism a guiding ethos to the government of the time that was largely oppressive. The key
tenants to this path included a totalitarian military rule, which gave no freedoms to its people. Like
many other communist dictatorships, it embraced an attitude of authoritarian socialism, anti western
sentiment, and anti intellectual fervor. In Beyond Rangoon we bear witness to the story of Aung Ko, a
University Professor who was fired for housing student protestors, despite not being involved in any
other way. (Boorman 1995) Anti intellectualism is a key for oppressive regimes to retain power, as
they must succeed in silencing all criticism and dissent. More than just being anti western, the country
adopted a militant Burmese nationalism that led to a xenophobic exclusion of the other. This, some

which the Buddha is surrounded by his first disciples. The other garden that is in the temple is the

Avalofitesvara Bodhisattva. The other images depicted are of heaven kings. The bodhisattva is
important because the vows of this Bodhisattva are of a compassionate mind and the power of
wisdom. This bodhisattva answers the prayers of sentient beings no matter where they are and

Almost no Greek tragedy escapes the use of violence. The Medea, The Oresteia, Antigone, and other
classic works of Grecian tragoidia all involve huge components of violence in many prominent places,
and for all of these stories, violent action is an integral part of the play. Medea, especially, is a
character worthy of note in this regard; her tumultuous life can be plotted accurately along a path of

events of the gripping Medea. In contrast to this turbulent streak of brutality in Grecian tragedy stands
the world of Greek comedy. Violence in comedy is just as much a part ... Show more content on

In comparison to this is Lysistrata, a comedy in which violence is not shown to be an answer that
works. In this story, however, the overarching dilemma is the existence of the Peloponnesian War. For
Euripides, violence is a question and a centerpiece of intrigue, yet it is not the root of the plot.
Aristophanes, on the other hand, chooses to investigate gender relations and the concerns of daily life
by using a hollow context of violence that ostensibly motivates the actions of the characters while
avoiding center stage as an issue of any weight in the play itself.
At first glance this analysis seems wrong: it appears that Lysistrata is very much concerned with
violence. After all, Aristophanes intended to write an anti war piece. However, while this statement is
technically true, it is only a skin deep realization. In actuality, Lysistrata herself is not anti war in the
sense of being ideologically opposed to war; she is anti war only insofar as she detests the
Peloponnesian War. And yet, although the Mede is at our gates, / You ruin Greece with mad intestine
wars. / This is my first reproach to both of you, (Aristophanes 1132) says Lysistrata to the assembled
Spartan and Athenian ambassadors. In this passage, the fiery woman establishes her stance and
proclaims that she is mainly upset over the fact that the current war is more a civil war than a war
against actual enemies. Her core

The Conflict Between Palestinian Arabs And Jews
The conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Jews is a phenomenon that stems from the struggle over
land defined exclusively as a Holy Land by both groups. Their competing claim to this territory and
the constant struggle for exclusive political control has created irreconcilable differences. Jewish
claim over the land is based on a covenant made between God and Abraham and the need for haven
from the growing anti Semitism in Europe. Palestinian Arabs claims to the land are based on their
continuous residence in the country and the rejection of the notion that ancient kingdoms constitute
claims over land in a modern time. They believe that because Abraham s son Ishmael is the forefather
of the Arabs, then God s promise of the land to the children of Abraham include them as well.
Although the land of Palestine was inhabited by a range of individuals living in peace, the growing
tension from the Zionist group, as well as the influx of Jewish immigration created growing anti
Semitism, which led to the Jewish push towards finding a haven.
In the late 1800s, a group of extremist minorities of the Jewish population began to colonize what was
then Palestine. Known as Zionists, their goal was to create a Jewish homeland, a haven from the
growing anti Semitism. The Zionist ideology was based on the premise that the only solution to have a
viable Jewish community in modern times would be in Eretz Israel. Eretz Israel was the land in which
the identity of the Jewish people was

Research Paper On Electric Cars
Are Electric Cars the Answer to Climate Change?
The market for electric cars has exploded over the last couple of years. The idea that owning an
electric car will reduce pollutants and help with climate change is a popular opinion. However,
research shows that electric cars actually contribute similar levels of pollutants to the environment as
their counterpart: internal combustion engines. Electric cars have been painted from the very
beginning as zero emission vehicles. Should a vehicle be advertised as a zero emissions vehicle when
the power that it charges from is far from zero?
An environmentalist named Robert F. Kennedy wrote an article in 2009 for the Financial Times in
which he said that the United States must end its dependence on deadly, destructive coal (Bryce 58).

Nuclear can produce 56 watts per square meter while wind only produces 1.2 watts per square meter.
Wind requires 45 times the land to produce the same amount of power. Not only does nuclear require
very little land to produce a lot of power, but the amount of waste it produces is next to none. In one
year, the U.S. coal industry produces nearly 2,200 times as much solid waste as the U.S. nuclear
industry has produced in more than four decades (Bryce 261).
Emissions coming out of an internal combustion engine are produced at the car and that is where
people inhale them. Fuel burning internal combustion engines that power conventional vehicles emit
carbon dioxide and fine particulate matter including acids, organic chemicals as well as dust and soil;
this pollution has been linked to respiratory and heart problems and cancer (Park). With an electric car
those same emissions are being released at a power plant while the car is being driven somewhere
else. This has given the illusion that driving an electric vehicle is

African-American Organized Crime In The 1930 s
African American Organized Crime Almost most organized crime was ___by Italian, Jewish and Irish
gangsters. African American organized crime emerged because it was able to meet general social
needs (Schatzberg 4). The conditions under which African Americans lived during the Depression and
Prohibition years were dreadful. The economic frustration and the racism that they suffered enabled
them to ___criminal behavior in order to deal with the hostility. Harlem endured greater levels of
poverty, illness, overcrowding and crime compared to other city neighborhoods in 1930. The Harlem
gangs formed out of social unrest and racial inequality and were involved in gambling especially the
numbers game or the policy and also in prostitution, robbery and drugs. During this era there was

Narcotics were at first legal. During the Prohibition, narcotics flowed through the Port of New York in
the 1920s and 1930s (Hortis 130). Traffickers of every ethnicity were involved in the drug trade and
the Jew Arnold Rothstein was the most significant in the 1920s. In the 1930s Italian syndicates
dominated the trade and held their distributions operations in Italian East Harlem. Hoover s
administration tried to deal with the manufacture, sale and use of illicit narcotics and is best portrayed
by the Federal Bureau of Narcotics. In 1930, legislation for a new and independent federal agency
concerned with the problem of illicit narcotics was introduced on June 9 of that year and the
legislation was signed into law by Hoover (James Hawdon, Mark Kleiman). The FBN increased
penalties for drug usage and broaden enforcement measures. Primarily they dealt with curtailment of

Operant Conditioning And Classical Conditioning
Classical conditioning is defined as a learning process that occurs when a biological response is paired
with a neutral stimulus in reference of Brembs and Heisenberg (2000). An age old example is Ivan
Pavlov conditioned his dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell by giving them food each time it rang. In
doing such, the dogs learned to associate the sound of the bell to meal time. Operant conditioning is a
spin on classical conditioning, whereas instead of trying to pair a response with a stimulus, a direct
behavioral outcome is achieved with reinforcements or
punishments.
In classical conditioning there are what is called an unconditioned stimulus and an unconditioned
response. The unconditioned response is an unlearned response that occurs naturally in reaction to the
unconditioned stimulus. Such as when someone jerks their hand away when they burn themselves on a
hot stove. There is also a conditioned stimulus and a conditioned response. An example of this would
be getting hungry when you smell the scent of food. The body knows that usually when the smell of
food is around it is time to eat, therefore your stomach rumbled in anticipation of the meal. Sometimes
classical conditioning is referred to as respondent conditioning.
In operant conditioning the goal is to have a specific behavioral outcome. Positive reinforcement
causes the strengthening of a response by adding something. Such as getting a treat after doing
something good. Negative reinforcement is the act of

British Child Protection Policies Essay
Introduction
Parliaments and their members can and should be among the foremost champions of child protection.
They can legislate, oversee government activity, allocate financial resources and, as leaders within
their nations and communities, raise awareness of issues and provide advocacy.
Historic Perspective
The end of the 19th century saw a raising concern with the cruelty inflicted to children by their
guardians, that was expressed in the public campaigns carried out by the National Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Children . This, together with the progressive intervention of the state into
family life during that period, for example through compulsory education, created the appropriated

(The prevention of delinquency was made through psychological treatment of the family and from the
late 1920 s there was a spread of Child Guidance Clinics .)
Following the death of Denis O Neil at the hands of his foster parents in 1945 and the Curtis report in
1946, that investigated the welfare of looked after children , the parliament passed the Children Act
1948 which created local authorities children s services to take responsibility for children in care .
This was coherent with the after War period of the welfare state and the idea of widen welfare services
and allowances . In 1952, after lobbying by children s departments workers representatives for a more
preventive work , the Children and Young Persons (Amendment) Act extended the duties of local
authorities to investigate any cases of alleged abuse or neglect . This responsibility was further
extended in 1963 by the Children and Young Persons Act. The act placed a duty on local authorities to
provide preventive services to families to avoid the entrance of children into care and to reduce the
time spent in care.
Put Bowlby s emerging attachment theory therefore?
Put Kemp as responsible for the re emerging of child abuse in early 60 s?
With the growing focus on the work with families become apparent the need to have a more effective
service for all the family. In the Seebohn report in 1968 that need was recognised and one of the

How Did The Agricultural Revolution Affect Europe
The Agricultural Revolution had an enormous impact on Europe, particularly in England and the
Netherlands. There were many ideas of how to improve agriculture and eliminate subsistence living. A
few key individuals paved the way for the agricultural revolution. These people included Viscount
Charles Townsend, Jethro Tull and Cornelius Vermuyden. The aforementioned individuals developed
ideas that were crucial to the Agricultural revolution. The essential components of the Agricultural
Revolution during the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe included improvements in farming,
pertaining to the Open Field System, the implementation of enclosure and an increased availability of
farmland; A lot of this had to do with the leadership and guidance of ... Show more content on

There was the removal of the Open Field System, a removal of the fallow year and the introduction of
nitrogen supplying crops. Not to mention that there were significant increases in the number of
livestock, production and farmland (because of drainage). The Agricultural Revolution can be
compared to the Scientific Revolution in Europe that occurred years before the Agricultural
Revolution. During the Scientific Revolution there were many changes in people s way of thinking.
For example, Copernicus revolutionized new outlooks by introducing a heliocentric view, this was
later solidified as true by Johannes Kepler. Kepler proved Copernicus views by establishing the 3
Laws of Planetary Motion. Another great scholar of the Scientific Revolution was Galileo Galilei who
challenged ideas regarding motion. Taking all of these great minds into account it is clear that the
Scientific Revolution urged a belief in learning, investigation and experimentation. This very thought
process is applicable to the Agricultural Revolution that occurred years later. During the Agricultural
Revolution great minds such as Viscount Charles Townsend, Jethro Tull and Cornelius

Problems and Challenges Faced by Multinational...
Introductions
A multinational corporation (MNC) is a corporation that operating in two or more countries, known as
host countries but managed from one country, known as home country. Multinational Corporation is
also known as international corporation (Wikipedia, 2011). Besides that, MNC can be defined as a
corporation that derives revenues from operations in countries other than home country
(BusinessDictionary, 2011).
The objective of MNC to operate in other countries is to gain competitive advantage through several
ways. Firstly, MNC is able to take advantage of difference in country specific circumstances. For
example, MNC may choose to locate its productions in less developed country like Vietnam to gain
cheap labor cost. Secondly, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is a very good example which can reflect the situation perfectly is the case happened at
Argentina in 2001, where the country has changed the government for three times in just two weeks
time due to the financial crisis that lead to collapse of the economy. Then, foreign investors faced
problems like utilities and energy as there was a new legislation against them issued by the new
government (Alvaro Mehmet, 2007).
3) Government effectiveness
According to World Bank, government effectiveness is referring to captures perceptions of the quality
of public services, the quality of the civil service and the degree of its independence from political
pressures, the quality of policy formulation and implementation, and the credibility of the government
s commitment to such policies. This is important for foreign investors because they do not wish to pay
for the deficiencies in the provision of public goods by government.
Developing country MNCs may have more experience as they used to doing so at home where home
governments do not supply them goods. Therefore, MNCs may suffer for the ineffectiveness of the
government which can lead to unexpected cost and also size of the operations being limited in the
country. LDCs have lower government effectiveness which causes the government systems and
establishments are slow and politically dependant, thus lead to lack of high quality of public goods.
4) Regulatory quality

Pyramid Discipleship Essay
Pyramid Discipleship Discipleship in a mega church
One of the hardest things to do when you are in a mega church is creating a community of genuine
discipleship and not just a Sunday Church . It can seem like a giant task to take on when looked at
head first because creating personal relationships with a thousand or more people is a lot of
relationships, but there are ways to do it, and following the mold of pyramid discipleship can be very
effective.
So what is it?
Pyramid discipleship is a system set up in a way to where one person will only take on 5 to 10 (at the
very most) people at a time to disciple. And as they continue in their discipling there will be others
above them to disciple them as they go. When you actually look at this inside of the church it becomes
clearer and easier to understand. At the top of the pyramid would be the senior pastor, a maybe some
of the elders or other staff members. Moving down the pyramid would be the staff that would oversee
the discipleship program. Weather this be one or two people, this is where the discipleship starts.
These leaders will be discipled by the elders or senior pastor, this is including not only questions about
the program but also walking with them through their spiritual life, and life in ... Show more content

With what kind of hearts? Part of what we are giving to our leaders is the ongoing discipleship they
will have. This is the same thing our leaders are giving to their disciples. Along with that we will hold
different fellowship nights to give our leaders a night of rest and fun as they can come and eat and talk
to the other leaders. This will also be available for the leaders to hold for their own groups. We want
true, genuine, Christ like hearts of love for this to be done at all. If it does not stem from love, then it
is nothing we want to promote. From the beginning we will push the idea of having a loving heart and

Method Sample and research design This study is based on survey responses from 1606 Kosovan entrepreneurs who completed questionnaire in face to face interviews during December January 2002 2003, 2003 2004, 2004 2005 (thereafter 2002, 2003 and 2004). SME surveys were conducted by Riinvest Institute for Development Research and one of the authors had a leading role in this research project. Samples were selected randomly from the business register kept at the Statistical Office of Kosova and the Ministry of Trade and Industry (2005). Interviews were conducted by experienced and trained final year students from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Prishtina and monitored carefully by the Riinvest research team. Respondents were key informants, mainly the owner or the general of companies. The response rate was very high with an average of 96.4 percent. The exclusion of these observations might lead to sample selection bias, but in our case this is not a concern as the non response rate is very small (around 3.6 per cent of total cases) and also our sample remains still representative (see, Cameron and Trivedi, 2005). Pooling data. The pooled data technique is used to test set of econometric models of firm growth. The pooled data contains information from three independent surveys from the period 2002, 2003 2004. An independently pooled cross section technique is obtained by pooling randomly sampled cross sections at different points in time (Wooldridge 2006). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hunting And Feasting In order to protect vital food sources, past heritages, traditions, and cultural values for future generations, the government should not ban the practice of hunting wild animals. Author Jacqueline Thursby argues, in her article Hunting and Feasting in Utah and Idaho that this region is rugged country; it is no easy task, even today, to make a living there, and wild game continues to serve as a mainstay for some families (103). Most urban families take for granted the accessibility of the supermarket; a convenience that is hardly used for these communities in Utah and Idaho, mostly thriving off of what the earth provides for them. • 4. Cleveland Indians Argumentative Essay The Cleveland Indians are a baseball team founded in 1894 (cleveland.indians.mlb.com). Although the name is obviously racist, in 1894 there unfortunately was not as large of public concern regarding the treatment of Native Americans. Now, the name is deemed to be offensive, as it should be. The logo depicts a Native American referred to as Chief Wahoo, an aspect of the team that also creates public scrutiny. For these reasons, the Cleveland Indians are changing their logo. However, the implementation of the decision will be put off a year and the team will continue using the name. Moreover, the logo will still be available on merchandize, enabling the team to profit off of racist insignia. In 2014, president and CEO of the Cleveland Indians, Mark Shapiro, had already limited the use of the logo. Thus, evidently, the Cleveland Indians are not doing enough to combat the prejudice and insensitivity they exhibit through their team name, mascot and logo. The team also is clearly only publicizing their supposedly monumental, yet actually minute, decision in order to boost public perception of the organization. • 5. Why Corporations Should Not Hire Military Veterans Military veterans have many characteristics that show good leadership and courage, which is what companies should be aspiring to have in their employees. Instead, many corporations are purposely not hiring military veterans; resulting in thousands becoming homeless. Corporations are discriminating against our soldiers and the government is not endeavoring to help these soldiers either. Companies automatically assume that vets suffer from mental illnesses, are irrational and violent, and are uneducated and incompetent. Our government needs to establish more programs that will benefit our soldiers such as: creating shelter homes; providing them with therapists to help them with newly developed mental disorders; and allowing them to gain stability by giving them more job opportunities. There are numerous reasons as to why corporations are choosing to not hire military veterans. There are two sets of reasons: one being the reasons that corporations tell the public and, two being what they truly mean but will not announce freely to the public. In the article, 5 Reasons Why Employers Are Not Hiring Vets by Lisa Nagorny and Dan Pick, student veterans at Wharton s MBA for Executives program, Nagorny and Pick discuss the interviews they conducted with 87 individuals and 69 companies. At the end of their study, they concluded five main reasons on why employers do not hire veterans. • 6. Essay about Farmington Industries Farmington Industries Case Write Up Farmington Industries is a small, publicly traded U.S. based corporation, which produces programmable control instruments. With high interests in Mexico, the company has expanded to four Mexican related businesses, which are listed below along with their specific function: The Maquiladora Assembly Facility This facility is used to assemble imported U.S. manufactured components into final products for sale mainly in the U.S. Seeing as the majority of sales occur in the U.S., this facility generates its revenues in USD. Farmington (Antilles) N.V. This facility is an offshore shell corporation by which the U.S. parent exports U.S. manufactured products to Mexico and other countries. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The devaluation of this currency leads to lower costs for the subsidiary, in relation to wages, since the peso has depreciated against the USD during this time period. The facility can purchase Mexican pesos with their USD profits at increasingly appealing exchange rates, and then use these pesos to finance new operations. By doing so, this shows the positive effect of the devaluation of the peso for the Maquiladora Assembly Facility. On the other hand, the peso devaluation will not have that much of a positive effect on Farmington (Antilles) N.V. as the peso depreciates relative to the USD. The result is the subsidiary being negatively impacted as the USD/peso exchange rate is rising, as they convert revenue earned in pesos to USD to deposit into U.S. bank accounts. This facility had almost 4 million MXN receivables at the end of the year. The 1994 average exchange rate is 3.5 MXN/USD, where these 4 million MXNs would equate to approximately 1.14 million USD. When the exchange rate values the devalued peso at 5.0 MXN/USD, these 4 million MXNs are only equal to 0.80 million USDs, showing a loss of more than 300,000 USDs. When the exchange rate changes from 4.0 to 5.0 MXN/USD, we can see the loss the company would experience, and thus the negative impact on this facility. Farmington Industries was not very well prepared for the December 20, 1994 devaluation. Farmington Industries business model creates a hedge by billing the majority of their transactions ... • 7. The Social And Social Problems And Effects Of Smartphones Nearly all of today s society has a smartphone in hand. As a whole, we depend on this phone in the same aspect as we did a baby blanket in our childhood. Major mental health issues, such as lack of social skills, memory problems, and stress are due to this technology. These are some of the biggest concerns when it comes to owning a phone, unfortunately, the effects are not fully realized. These devices have brought several problems in user s lives, despite supposedly making it easier. Everyday human social interactions are suffering due to the part smartphones play. Furthermore, being connected through this technology is something that is bragged upon, but users are not as connected as they would like to think. Unfortunately this constant communication gives a false sense of connection, because when they are face to face there is little interaction. Turkle states that communication between family members when Parents text and do email...while children complain about not having their parents full attention ( 3.) Parents are no longer paying attention to what their child is doing whether it be a baseball game or dance competition they are overwhelmed with demands on their time. • 8. Improving HTTP Performance Using Stateless TCP Improving HTTP Performance Using Stateless TCP In this paper a server side approach is made which can reduce processing load per connection. The advantages of running web servers over a basic transport protocol that is similar to TCP are studied here. The stateless TCP for HTTP decreases the kernel resources required per TCP connection. So it increases the number of client initiated HTTP connections per second. Stateless TCP modifications decreases the server s CPU usage and other TCP memory requirements. This helps to serve small webpages under overloaded situations. Two Algorithms (David A Hayes, Improving http performance using stateless tcp, 2011) are mentioned that show the basic operation of stateless TCP, one for incoming packets and one for outgoing packets from server. These include few rules to react to incoming control packets and also information to deal with application data. Algorithm 1: incoming Every TCP packet is captured which arrives at port 80 and following operations are performed, 1. If it s a TCP SYN packet, send back a TCP SYN/ACK 2. If TCP DATA packet a) Store ack number and start timer b) Send TCP ACK packet back to sender, correct sequence and ack number c) Send TCP payload to server via UDP socket 3. If a TCP FIN packet, send back TCP FIN/RST/ACK and delete data and timer stored at 2a 4. • 10. Ancient Christian Worship By Andrew B. Mcgowan Zoryana Nichipor Christianity Western Culture Box #390 Word Count: Book Review of Ancient Christian Worship: Early Christian Practices in Social, Historical, and Theological Perspective Throughout this book, Andrew B. McGowan thoroughly informs us on each cultural background and formation of the different types of acts of worship throughout the early Christian church. We see through this information that the way the Church worships has evolved into something completely different from what it once was. In one form or another we are forced to appreciate how the early Christians worshipped and, I would even assert, are challenged to bring these traditions into our own mentality of worship. If we are to look to the New Testament and how worship is referred to, it is a great deal about ethos or a Christian way of life, but relatively little about the specifics of distinctive liturgical practice or performance. In chapter one of McGowan s book, we see a compare and contrast given with how the early church worshiped more communally as opposed to how we worship today; which is more aesthetic and internal. McGowan reiterates numerously that worship in the New Testament is a subject of service, reverence and ethics. They were not merely one sacramental part of a community or worship life but the central act around or within which others reading and preaching, prayer and prophecy were arranged. The New Testament was in the setting of a very communal culture. And ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. A Research Study On Helicopter Parenting Essay College life for the twenty first century student is not what it used to be. According to an American College Health Association National College Health Assessment survey, eighty five percent of college students feel so tremendously overwhelmed they walk through the day blind and just hoping things work out (Fisher). Students lack the ability to focus and manage everything that is piled on them during class. The term helicopter parenting was first common in the 1990 s, but was first used in 1969. Now, forty seven years later, helicopter parenting has become prevalent in college students lives and the culture around people. A helicopter parent is one who takes an overprotective or excessive interest in the life of their child or children. Helicopter parenting does not start out randomly as a college student; helicopter parenting is a process that develops results. The helicopter parent issue is prevalent to many people. People from Doctor Amy Joyce to stay at home mom Jamie Porter have done studies to explain the effects of helicopter parenting. Psychologists such as Chris Meno have done research and testings to collect data on helicopter parented children. The issue of helicopter parenting is not just concerning children; it is concerning people across the country. President of Frostburg State University told Amy Joyce parents have called him to settle a dispute between their child and their roommate. • 12. Taking a Look at Neoconservatism Neoconservatism Neoconservatism is one of the most well known and distinctive sociopolitical trends to emerge in the 1970s. In modern politics, many neoconservatives are often dyed in the wool rightists; however the movement was originally conceived and shaped by a collective of former leftists and liberal Democrats who had become disillusioned with the left due to the many political struggles of the nation during the 1960s, and what they perceived as guilt ridden anti Americanism embraced by the left in the wake of the anti Vietnam War movement. (Nuechterlein 1996) In fact, Merriam Webster s dictionary defines neoconservative as a former liberal espousing political conservatism. During the 1960s, Neoconservatives were staunchly opposed to communism, the counterculture movement, particularly the political radicalism and its animus against authority, custom, and tradition. (Ball and Dagger 2013) In 1965, two prominent New York neoconservatives, columnist Irving Kristol, and sociologist Daniel Bell established The Public Interest, a quarterly public policy journal focusing on the political economy of the United States and culture. The magazine often espoused dissatisfaction with social reforms of the 1960s, which were viewed as having destroying the moral values of the country. The magazine would go on to become the leading neoconservative publication for the next 40 years. Throughout the 1970s, as many neoconservatives rose to political prominence, giving the ... Explain his views on law, statecraft and power. Comment on the fundamental differences between Legalism and Confucianism. Han Fei Tzu: Legalism, is an ancient Chinese philosophy concerned with the art of rulership and the stability of the state. Along with hundreds of other philosophical schools, legalism emerged during the Warring States Period (453 422 BC), a time of intense political and intellectual turmoil. Unlike other schools of thought, legalism defined the strength of the state, through a system of punishments and rewards, propagated by common laws. Neither concerning itself with Confucian idealization of the past, or the morality of man, legalisms pragmatic system of governance, as best defined by Han Fei Zi, ended the hundreds of years of warfare and unified China. As aforementioned, Legalism was at the forefront of philosophical discourse during the Warring States Period. The Warring States Period was a time of both immense growth and conflict, as the remaining seven states fought over the dominance of China. • 15. Comparing Parents In The Glass Menagerie By James Williams My parents love to live vicariously through me, especially my mother, and while I understand their inclination to do this, it can make them a bit controlling of my actions. Williams exhibits in The Glass Menagerie the damaging effects of overbearing parents on the mental and emotional growth of their children. In the play, the mother inhibits the development of her children because she tries to control her children s lives, which takes away the ability to become independent and focus on personal needs. Amanda treats Laura like a child and constantly makes decisions for her, and she and keeps him from enjoying his life. Amanda belittles Laura s self ownership which makes Laura immature and helpless as an adult. When the subject of gentleman callers comes up, Amanda addresses Laura, saying, How many do you suppose we re going to entertain this afternoon? [...] [reappearing, airily] What? No one not one? You must be joking! [Laura nervously echoes her laugh] (Williams 18). Amanda is caught up in her dreams of marriage for Laura, made clear by her enthusiastic tone and body language, but Laura s uncomfortable laugh shows how she is not amused by her mother s aspirations. Amanda is only focused on what she wants for Laura, but she should really be concerned with what Laura wants for herself. In addition, Amanda cannot accept the fact that her daughter is not going to have any suitors; she denies reality and tries to bring Laura into her world of illusions. This irresponsible parenting causes Laura to become the childish adult that she is. When Amanda questions where Laura was going instead of business college, Laura explains that, I went in the art museum and the bird houses at the Zoo. I visited the penguins every day! Even after completing my Master s degree in China I could not see the practical use of my studies. However, now I think it has become my strength to comprehend Chinese Language and culture as a student who seeks to research on the International Studies related to China as a Ph.D. candidate. During my study in China, I witnessed China s emergence as a global superpower and its transformation from a development aid recipient to a donor country. This particularly intrigued me more than its language and culture. The transformation was similar to my home country, Korea, but this time I was able to witness it. China s growing foreign aid started to have a significant impact on the landscape of the global development community and became a formidable alternative to existing Official Development Assistant (ODA). A non OECD country, has become the center of controversies with its foreign aid policies. • 18. William Carlos Williams s The Twentieth Century The early twentieth century in the United States was a time of rapid change combined with rapid loss. As new technologies designed to improve everyday living became available to people across the nation, a new culture was rising in America: a culture that both afforded comfort and thrived on capitalism. There were many critics of this new America, including poets Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams. The aforementioned poets reflected on a fast changing America through exploitation. As an American, Poet William Carlos Williams believed that the twentieth century culture in America was at a decline. With modern inventions and the growth of a capitalist America, suburbanites and rural Americans were suffering from the urbanization and industrialization of America. William Carlos Williams lived in the suburbs and worked as a family physician, where he observed much of his suburban America (. Through his observations, on people he could see a generalization of what was changing throughout the twentieth century and its effects on people like himself. His poetry appreciated America for what it was while critiquing what he saw it becoming, a degeneration of rural communities which meant a decline of American culture. (Monacell, 125). In order to confront difficult issues, such as social justice, one must realize how their positionality effects their epistemologies. Takacs (2002) states that when we develop the skill of understanding how we know what we know, we acquire a key to lifelong learning (p. 28). Being able to discern why we view the world in a certain way leads to truths about one s own identity, such as their privileges in society. However, these identities are not always apparent. Tatum (2000) states that it is our targeted identities that hold our attention, while the dominant identities go unexamined (p. 7). In order to develop a holistic sense of self, we must examine all parts of our being. As my interviewer remarked: you have to know who you are, and how you show up in pieces, and the impact that may give to others, because that definitely contributes (A. Rubango, personal communication, September 13, 2017). Every person has their own multitude of identities. My interviewer s own identity contains numerous components as a female, an immigrant from the Congo, and having a middle class SES. To achieve these objectives, we will use three different mouse embryonic stem (ES) cell lines (R1, D3, E14), already present in the lab. In ongoing studies, it was noted that these cells presented all five of the ING genes with altered expression when they were induced to differentiate. We will first study if altering ING5 and ING4 expression using siING5 and siING4 to decrease it and pCI ING5, pCI ING4 to increase levels, will affect differentiation and the self renewal rate of these lines. We will use sphere formation assays to assess self renewal. We will also induce differentiation with these different expression constructs, thus measuring the influence of these proteins in the process. Problems Associated With Hepatitis C Introduction: Indigenous peoples in Canada (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) are recognized as having a significantly increased hepatitis C disease burden in comparison to non Indigenous Canadians (Uhanova, Tate, Tataryn, Minuk, 2013). Due to over representation in many groups considered high risk for hepatitis C transmission, such as those living in unstable housing or engaging in injection drug use, Indigenous peoples living in urban settings are particularly affected (Miller et al., 2010). Recent studies have shown that comprehensive research on the risk factors associated with hepatitis C acquisition in urban Indigenous populations is lacking (Uhanova et al., 2013; Plitt et al., 2011). The Negative Effects Of Music In Education Each year there is that one student ; the kid with the headphones, the kid who never appears to be listening, when you (the teacher) go to ask them to take the headphones out, they tell you that the music helps them. Many may feel that students can not learn or comprehend when they have a headphone on, however research shows that students who listen to music have better behaviour, less stress, and higher grade scores. For some people music is a distraction, it is more like an added stress, and it doesn t help. Many teachers included have the mindset that music does not help, and when there is little information supporting music in classrooms, their point is understandable. Young Goodman Brown Mood Young Goodman Brown, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story about a man who ends up losing his positive vision of all those who he used to look up to because of the wickedness of sin and the way in which it turns good people bad so abruptly. In the quote above, the message that is being stated is that the devil himself is not as terrible in its own skin and flesh, but as soon as he takes on the persona or the body of another being, then the effect of his evil is magnified. Further proving the point of the way in which evil works, the second traveler, or the devil, never forces Brown to attend the ceremony that takes place near the end of the short story, he only encourages him to; however, the reader already knows that Brown intends to attend the ceremony regardless. So, evil or the devil, simply aid us in doing what is already in our intention to do; though, the actual action comes from what is already in our hearts to do. • 31. The Differences Of Alexander Hamilton And Thomas Jeffersons Like many in their time, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were friends and on the same side to absolve colonial ties with Great Britain. But once the war was over and independence was documented in the Treaty of Paris, the new business of creating a new nation was at hand. During this time, it became apparent that those who shared the same side during the revolution would now find themselves at odds with one another. Both men had visions and desires for the new nation. However, nearly one hundred years later and following the civil war, one vision in particular, was closer to reality than the other. Both of these men were fundamental in the birth of this nation, but their views on government, economics, and politics differ substantially. Economically speaking, Hamilton wanted a growing and thriving society based on trade and large manufacturing companies. In contrast, Jefferson envisioned a society that was based mainly on the presence of many small farmers. Jefferson particularly did not want large amounts of manufacturing to be done in the US. He argued that manufactured goods could be imported from Europe, while the US could remain primarily agrarian. During the Reconstruction period, the South went through a major reconstruction and rebuilding phase. Although farming was still a large part of the economy, large manufacturing facilities emerged as well. The increase in large manufacturing facilities and international trade mirrored the vision of Hamilton much more so than Jefferson s. Jefferson and Hamilton differed widely in their views of politics and the structure of society. Jefferson envisioned an egalitarian country vs Hamilton s aspirations of a more stratified society. Jefferson wanted pure equality for everyone regardless of social, economic, or background. In contrast, Hamilton wanted a growing manufacturing society were owners of factories and large industries were politically more powerful than the people that worked for them. Aristophanes, on the other hand, chooses to investigate gender relations and the concerns of daily life by using a hollow context of violence that ostensibly motivates the actions of the characters while avoiding center stage as an issue of any weight in the play itself. The Conflict Between Palestinian Arabs And Jews The conflict between Palestinian Arabs and Jews is a phenomenon that stems from the struggle over land defined exclusively as a Holy Land by both groups. Their competing claim to this territory and the constant struggle for exclusive political control has created irreconcilable differences. Jewish claim over the land is based on a covenant made between God and Abraham and the need for haven from the growing anti Semitism in Europe. Palestinian Arabs claims to the land are based on their continuous residence in the country and the rejection of the notion that ancient kingdoms constitute claims over land in a modern time. The idea that owning an electric car will reduce pollutants and help with climate change is a popular opinion. However, research shows that electric cars actually contribute similar levels of pollutants to the environment as their counterpart: internal combustion engines. Electric cars have been painted from the very beginning as zero emission vehicles. Should a vehicle be advertised as a zero emissions vehicle when the power that it charges from is far from zero? In one year, the U.S. coal industry produces nearly 2,200 times as much solid waste as the U.S. nuclear industry has produced in more than four decades (Bryce 261). • 45. Operant Conditioning And Classical Conditioning Classical conditioning is defined as a learning process that occurs when a biological response is paired with a neutral stimulus in reference of Brembs and Heisenberg (2000). An age old example is Ivan Pavlov conditioned his dogs to salivate at the sound of a bell by giving them food each time it rang. In doing such, the dogs learned to associate the sound of the bell to meal time. Operant conditioning is a spin on classical conditioning, whereas instead of trying to pair a response with a stimulus, a direct behavioral outcome is achieved with reinforcements or punishments. In classical conditioning there are what is called an unconditioned stimulus and an unconditioned response. The unconditioned response is an unlearned response that occurs naturally in reaction to the unconditioned stimulus. Such as when someone jerks their hand away when they burn themselves on a hot stove. There is also a conditioned stimulus and a conditioned response. An example of this would be getting hungry when you smell the scent of food. The body knows that usually when the smell of food is around it is time to eat, therefore your stomach rumbled in anticipation of the meal. Sometimes classical conditioning is referred to as respondent conditioning. In operant conditioning the goal is to have a specific behavioral outcome. Positive reinforcement causes the strengthening of a response by adding something. Such as getting a treat after doing something good. Negative reinforcement is the act of ...
