Culture, Leadership and Staffing at Xerox
Culture, Leadership and Staffing at Xerox
Leadership
After much reorganization and movement of leadership, Anne Mulcahy took over the helm of Xerox.
Anne was a popular 24 year Xerox veteran promoted to president and chief operating officer when her
predecessor Thoman was fired. Anne was a straight talker. She was very decisive in her decision
making and took responsibility when she made an error. So much so that analysts were astonished
Anne when conceded that Xerox had an unsustainable business model. However, Mulcahy later
backed away from this statement, saying that she meant only that the company needed to cut operating
costs and redirect investment from money losing to high margin businesses.

The Brazilian subsidiary, long the company s largest source of profit outside the U.S., was reeling
from colossal currency translation losses and soaring interest rates. In North America, productivity
was deteriorating as the sales force braced for the reorganization scheduled to begin in January.
All the while, Xerox strengthened its core business by maintaining an organization wide focus on
innovation. Even with all of the cost cutting we did, we didn t take a dollar out of research and
development, Mulcahy said.
Xerox hit a record high of nearly $64 a share in May, 1999, just three weeks after Thoman replaced
Allaire as CEO. Today, the stock trades around $7, a few dollars above the price at which it listed on
the New York Stock Exchange in 1961. The evisceration of $38 billion in shareholder wealth already
qualifies Xerox as a corporate catastrophe of the first order. And the company s woes are not over yet
not by a long shot.
Xerox posted a loss of $198 million over the last three months of 2000, the largest quarterly loss in a
decade. By even the most optimistic forecast (its own), the company will not edge back into the black
until the second half of this year, at the earliest. With $2.6 billion in debt coming due this year and a
$7 billion bank loan looming in 2002, Xerox is cutting spending, firing workers, and trying to raise as
much as $4 billion by selling off assets.

Sompack a Turkish Manufacturer
ABSTRACT
SomPack which is a Turkish manufacturer, had to make a hard decision about its substantial corporate
strategy, because in the mid 1990s SomPack realized that China was a threat. China had been making
inroads into U.S. Market. The main issue was the labor cost differentials, so SomPack tried to set
some ways to reduce labor costs and increase the capacity. The company took a step to product
assembly that is the lipstick mechanism and the mechanism was high volume component that has
multistep process. They had a machine custom designed, but the machine was so sensitive to operate
and defects occurred. Then, they decided to redesign the parts of assembly to decrease material cost,
but it also did not work well. If they would have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, it causes some problems about the moulds and to fix they had to pay much more for labor costs.
Another criterion is SomPack`s customers` demand cheap products. Moreover, SomPack loss their
suppliers and the customers due to the Chinese affects in cosmetic market. Lastly, large customers
who could control suppliers in China increasingly preferred to deal with them directly. Customers
increasingly approached SomPack for smaller order quantities, and when they needed to change their
product mix often, so SomPack could not have depended on Chinese suppliers for such products
either.
FACTS
Facts are related to criteria. There are some economic and also social facts that are connected to
economic ones. Economic facts are that the company was trying to reduce labor costs, product quality
by the use of cheaper raw material, use of cheaper costs and machines. Also, the social facts occurred
due to loss of customers. Those customers started to look for new countries to find a new company.
That is, SOMPACK was famous with its quality products and good customer relations, but they had to
decrease costs because of the fact that global crisis and foreign competition had increased.
ACTION PLAN
SomPack`s goal is to be different than the other companies on the base of production`s quality and
service.
SHORT TERM STEPS
SomPack should reduce the costs as much as they can by the use

Internship Essay For Internships
How did I came about with this internship? Good question to ask.
The decision I made from the list was listed as UAMS Patient Education Patient Care Services with
Barbie Brunner. I contacted her and even went up to her office to see if it was possible I can intern in
her department. She stated, she is interviewing an internship coordinator, so give her a few weeks. The
few weeks will be around when the semester start, so that wouldn t help me at all. I went to this
women name Katherine Metz (I go to church with her). During graduation season for high school
students, she was recognized for University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) number one
Nurse Educator Award. A lightbulb pop above my head. I thought to myself that I should talk to her
about an internship at UAMS dealing with educating patients. She ask for some personal information
and she emailed me back within two days. Dana Smith Patient Education Specialist emailed me and
told me she will be handling getting me processed to intern with them. I went in for an interview. They
told me the general information about the department, what will be taking place on the first day,
scheduling, dress code, lunch, parking, and how and where to get the badge. After talking to them I
know I will enjoy this internship with Dana Smith and Emily Gordon in the Patient Education
Department at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

Language And Sexism In Language
Language plays an important role in society. In large extent it is a mirror of it while at the same time it
functions as means of constructing and maintaining that society. As a phenomenon of society,
language reflects all the perspectives of human society. Sexism in language has been a controversial
topic in sociolinguists since its inception. In this chapter, a historical overview will be made and a
definition of sexist language will be provided.
Sexism in language exists when language devalues members of a certain gender. Sexist language has
many definitions but for the sake of this essay the following definition will be used: [a statement] is
sexist if its use constitutes, promotes or exploits an unfair or irrelevant or impertinent distinction
between the sexes (Vetterling Braggin 1981:3).
Over the years there have been many concerns about gender and language which can be traced to
linguistics and to feminist theory. As a research field it developed side by side with the second wave of
feminism during the 1960s and 1970s, despite the fact that gender and language have been a debatable
issue for a long time. Around that time many articles and books were written which addressed two
questions; the essence and importance of gender bias in language and of gender differences in
language use. As Lakoff ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women s secondary social status being reflected in language was strongly endorsed by Lakoff (1973,
1975). According to this mirror model, positive words like strong, intelligent, sexually active,
independent and negative one just reflected negative attitudes towards women in society (Stanley,
1977). The issue was whether language just reflected men s power or whether it also feeds into it.
According to many feminists, language establishes and nourishes negative beliefs towards women and
their secondary social status besides the fact that it also reflects men s

Media Panics
A media panic or often referred to as a moral panic, is a term that describes how the media is
formulating issues amongst our society. Over time, our culture has shifted and caused for many
conclusions regarding media panics and the relationship between youth and the media culture. Based
upon previous knowledge and course readings, I have drawn a very disturbing conclusion; this being
that no matter what age, children are willing or non willingly now under surveillance to determine
what kind of role media is playing in their lives. With what I have gathered from the readings and
class lectures, most authors strongly believe that different forms of media directly influence children s
thinking or perception. What authors and researchers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The authors discuss the objectifying gaze, which I believe has a lot to do with how females are
perceived with the usages of photo altering technology and online visual cultures. The theoretical
framework of the objectification theory places female bodies in a sociocultural context with the aim of
illuminating the lived experiences and mental health risks of girls and women who encounter sexual
objectification (Frederickson Roberts, 174). The pose and the filter that a young woman chooses to
enhance the beauty of her photo is argued to read just that, and it allows for others viewing them to
assume their lived experiences, how these young women generally are, the practices they engage in,
etc. What we tend to forget, especially in an age where digital culture is so prominent, is that a picture
is a snapshot of a moment in time. According to Drotner (1999), the idea that new media has become a
threat and a main cause of moral panics to young people is problematic because it infers that they are
effected by what they are exposed to. This assumption of children, introduces to our society that every
piece of media may be able to change them. What we are telling ourselves is that young people are
followers and do not have a mind of their own; they are vulnerable, innocent and easily influenced.
Media panics introduce the idea that there should be some sort of protection for children from the
dangers media may introduce. In

Industrial Sectors Of Northern Ireland And The Republic Of...
An instrument in which governments use as a method to intervene in international trade and
investment as mentioned earlier are tariffs. A tariff is a form of tax established on foreign goods and
services, which are imported. Tariffs are generally used to restrict international trade, as they increase
the price of imported goods and services which as a result, makes those commodities more expensive
to consumers. Also, a tariff can be exactly like a quota, which will be discussed later, if, permitting the
same import volume, the domestic output and prices are identical under the alternative trade policies
(Fung, 1989). By restricting trade of imported foreign goods and services through tariffs but
increasing the costs, it provides protection to domestic producers against the foreign competitors. As
seen from the experience from the Irish case study of a comparison between the industrial sectors of
Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to examine the effects of protection on industries
specialization and trade, tariffs can play a major part in an industry s and its surrounding industries
performance (McAleese, 1977). Governments employ the use of tariffs for many reasons; firstly, they
could be protecting domestic employment because as the competition of imported goods that threaten
domestic industries increase, it could cause these domestic firms to fire workers or even shift
production abroad to cut costs to stay competitive. Governments can also apply a

suspected murder and she took the throne in 1762. Although she made no great reforms in Russian
society, she gathered many friends by her death in 1796.
Catherine had to keep the nobility pleased at all times because if she didn t she could be dethroned
easily. Because of this she carried out very few social reforms. Russia continued to follow an
economic growth that Peter that Great had started. She tried to remove trade barriers, and assisted in
expanding the middle class, which helped trade. Catherine II s great addition to Russia was the land

His rule was a time of excellent Russian literary works from authors such as Dostoyevsky and Tolstoi,
despite the policies of censorship and control that he put into place,. During his reign many technical
institutes were founded. By the end of his rule, there were a large number of trained professionals in
Russia. His government also successfully completed the codification of laws, which led to better
economic development, the stabilization of the currency, and the creation of protective tariffs. The
main flaw of Nicholas I s rule was the timidness exhibited by him and his government. Fearing
peasant revolts and the constantly distrusting nobility, the government never took any serious steps
towards abolishing the serf system and reforming their backward agrarian economy.
Alexander II. The son of Nicholas I, Alexander I took the throne after his father s death in 1855.
Alexander I s rule was during the time when the people expected much from their leader, and he
responded by reforming the country. The main reform of his rule was that of the abolishment of
serfdom. Because of this Russia was at last on its way towards joining the world in becoming a
modern society. Alexander II also introduced elected institutions of local government, the zemstvos,
they handled education, health, welfare, and made changes in the

Scout s Childhood Simplicity in Harper Lee’s To Kill a...
The adult world is a cold and terrifying place. There are robberies, shootings, murders, suicides, and
much more. If you were to be a small child, perhaps age 5, and you were to look in at this world, you
would never know how bad it actually was, just from a single glance. Children have a small slice of
ignorant bliss, which helps to keep them away from the harsh of reality. It isn t until later, when they
encounter something that opens their eyes and shows them, that they truly start to understand the
world we live it. Harper Lee s To Kill A Mockingbird shows the many differences between the
simplicity of being a kid and the tough decisions and problems that adults must face every day.

Bob Yule is a very corrupt character. He beats his daughter, he doesn t care for his children, and in the
end of the book he tries to harm Scout and Jem, just because their father defended a black man in
court. Once his mind is made up, he will not change his course of action, which leads to his own
demise. We do not know where Mr. Yule went wrong, or when he changed, but we do have in
comparison his daughter, Mayella. She was simply following her father s lead in court, and though she
lied under oath, she still had a certain amount of innocence. She did not have a vicious or malicious
intent, but more as a scared girl. She was scared of her father and of what he would do to her if she
didn t comply with his commands. Though these reasons are not to be used as excuses for her
behavior, they give a little bit of insight into the mind of a teenager. She was simply looking out for
her own well being, not that of another, which is a common thing for people to do.
Though it would seem like the adult world is distorted, there are some parts that are not the same as
the parts where Bob Yule lives. This would be in Atticus Finch s house. Atticus may be an adult but he
is not corrupt by any means. He is an honest man, who happens to sometimes have a dishonest job. In
the case of Tom Robinson, he has an honest job and must

Internal And External Conflict In The Story Blue Winds...
The comparison of internal and external conflicts and the effect on the lives of the protagonists
Internal and external conflicts often affect a person s life as well as their families lives. Additionally, it
may lead a man to experience an epiphany about his own life. The story Blue Winds Dancing
demonstrates the internal and external struggles experienced by the native as he transitions into white
society. The native is an outcast and has a longing to return to his native reserve. In comparison, Angel
Levine describes the life of a Jewish man named Manischevitz who lost everything: his children, his
business, and his eventually his wife because of her illness. He reaches out to God, but there is no

In Angel Levine , Manischevitz struggles with his surroundings. He lost everything, including his
children and his establishment because it catches fire and then burn[s] to the ground (Malamud). He
now must support the family financially and take care of his ill wife, Fanny. Another large external
issue that Manischevitz faces is the ability to trust the black angel. He thinks [he] is a faker because
God would not send a black angel. However, God sent him this black angel as a test of his faith and
after he wavers, he returns to God. Throughout these tests of faith, he experiences an epiphany,
understanding that there are Jews everywhere (Malamud). Similarly, the native also has an external
conflict; he cannot get home after he realizes that he does not want to acculturate into the white
society. He tries to return home by dangerously hitchhiking onto the Santa Fe train. When he finally
leaps onto the cattle car, the native feels peaceful and content at last because he is going home
(Whitecloud). However, once the native finally arrives home, he faces an additional conflict; will his
family accept him. He is shivering for the dawn because he is simultaneously nervous and excited on
his journey home (Whitecloud). The story concludes with his family welcoming him back into the
native world.

Essay on The Politics of Going Green
Sustainability, as it pertains to the environment, seems like an idea that would appeal to everyone. The
idea of conserving what we have, reusing what we can, and developing new ways to more efficiently
use our planet s limited recourses just seems like common sense to me. Unfortunately, our
representatives in Washington D.C. have used environmentalism as a way to gain votes and divide the
electorate. Responsible management of our planet has become as widely debated as gay marriage or
religion in the schools. Like most social issues, sustainability has ardent supporters and determined
critics. Global warming has become the spotlight for both sides of the battle over sustainability in
American politics. Supporters of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On that day some 20 million Americans throughout the country held peaceful demonstrations favoring
environmental reforms. The year ended with the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) on December 2, 1970.The EPA is charged with establishing and enforcing environmental
protection standards, conducting environmental research, assisting others in combating environmental
pollution, and recommending new environmental protection policies to the President (Lewis). The
short Carter administration s energy policy highlighted funding for solar energy and the continuation
of Nixon policies. As the environmental decade came to close and the Carter administration ended in
1981, the new President shifted attention and funding elsewhere. The left praised Reagan for his
environmental record as governor of California but after entering the oval office Reagan quickly
began undoing much of the environmental progress of the last decade. In his first year in office
Reagan proposed a 25 percent cut in funding for the EPA. Reagan was quoted saying trees cause more
pollution than automobiles do, and if you ve seen one tree you ve seen them all (Little). I, along with
most Americans, easily get frustrated when politicians change their views just so they will get elected.

Uniquely Cheap
Because computers can perform millions of computations each second, the cost of an individual
calculation approaches zero. This unique property of computers leads to interesting consequences in
ethics.
Uniquely Discrete
In a stimulating paper On the Cruelty of Really Teaching Computer Science, Edsger Dijkstra
examines the implications of one central, controlling assumption: that computers are radically novel in
the history of the world. Given this assumption, it follows that programming these unique machines
will be radically different from other practical intellectual activities. This, Dijkstra believes, is because
the assumption of continuity we make about the behavior of most materials and artifacts does not hold
for computer systems. For most things, small changes lead to small effects, larger changes to
proportionately larger effects. If I nudge the accelerator pedal a little closer to the floor, the vehicle
moves a little faster. If I press the pedal hard to the floor, it moves a lot faster. As machines go,
computers are very different.
Uniquely Coded
Computers operate by constructing codes upon codes upon codes cylinders on top of tracks, tracks on
top of sectors, sectors on top of records, records on top of fields, fields on top of characters, characters
on top of bytes, and bytes on top of primitive binary digits. Computer protocols like TCP/IP are
comprised of layer upon layer of obscure code conventions that tell

What Is George Berkeley s Argument Against The View Of...
George Berkeley is a philosopher against the views of materialism. He presents his argument against
materialism using dialogues between two characters. The first character is Philonous, who is meant to
represent George Berkeley and his viewpoints that humans see nothing more than ideas. The second
character is named Hylas. Hylas is meant to represent the views of a materialist. A materialist believes
everything has a foundation in matter, and therefore humans see objects as they are. In the first
dialogue between Philonous and Hylas, they discuss their understanding of the senses as related to
matter. More specifically, they are in a debate about whether the senses are a necessary part of matter.
Hylas believes matter is a substance that exists without someone needing to perceive it. Philonous
believes matter cannot exist without someone having some mental understanding of it, and in the
event that no physical being is present to perceive ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In their discussion, Philonous states that an object cannot be two colors at once and therefore the color
seen is based the viewer s perception. Hylas replies by stating that under ideal conditions the object
will be seen as one color, because that is the object s true color. Hylas presents his objection to
Philonous point that an object cannot be two things at once by getting to the root of what causes
beings to see color. Hylas argues that light is a material that interacts with the mind to give a
perception of some color. More clearly, the mind can only perceive objects who possess qualities that
can be understood through the senses. Hylas is arguing that matter in itself has qualities that can be
seen in different ways depending on the person, however even if people have conflicting perceptions,
the object will always possess its quality. For example, in the case of the chair being seen as white or
yellow depending on the person, under a microscope the chair will always be one

Paradise Bent Video Analysis
For Video Reflection Paper Two, I decieded to watch and write about Paradise Bent . Paradise Bent
follows Heather Croall learning about the Fa afaine s of Somoa everyday life, past, and place in their
culture. Fa afaine are Somoan boys who are brought up as girls, and act as girls in everyday Samoan
life. The first aspect of the video I found interesting was how it seemed that the Fa afaine are a new
trend and sect of Samoan society. What I found interesting was how the arrival of the European
missioniaries correlated with the explosion of transvestism. What also fascinated me was how after the
European s came, the girls of Samoa seemed to be overshadowed and replaced. I found it intersting
how the traditional Samoan female roles of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I thought it was strange how the western, and more imporantly Christian culture, led to Samoan
women being forced to wear breast coverings and mandatory dresses. This was because they
percieved them to be too revealing and sexual. One aspect of the video that I found surprising was
how Samoan religion supported the Fa afaine. Christianity is the official religion of Samoa. A core
value of Christianity is the close sexual bond and relationship between a man and woman. I found it
shcoking how accepting the Samoan minsiters and pastors were of the Fa afaine. I was also suprised
how the Fa afaine were allowed to dress as women while attending church. A second aspect of the
video that I found surprising was how accepting the enitre communtity was of the Fa afaine and the
open roles they played in everyday Samoan society. I found it shocking how at five years old, Blondie
s mom gave him dresses to wear and openly praised his siblings when they referred to him as their
sister . His mom allowed and praised him for wearing lava lava under his armpits and shaving his
entire body to mimic that of a woman. What was also suprising was how after his mom s actions,
Blondie began viewing himself as a female and saw the women of the community as his role models.
Because of this, he and the thousands of other Fa afaine performed the traditional daily

Model Of A Soup Pan
What do you think of when you hear pre 1950 s music? Do think of Frank Sinatra? Ella Fitzgerald? T
Bone Walker? Well a thing all three of them have in common is that they influenced and were
influenced by the culture at the time. A great model that can represent the culture changing at the time
is my model of a soup pan. The soup pan is not perfect by any means, as in my opinion it is
impossible to perfectly show how American culture changed throughout the 1900 s. One way a soup
pan represents cultural change is how sub or fringe culture can be added to the overall culture. The
soup changes as society adds ingredients to it. If we add a carrot and onion to a tomato soup, it is not
really tomato soup anymore. It is. . .tomatonionarrt soup? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example like how classical music does not really affect today s music, classical music had been
strained out of the pot and pushed aside. Classical music is still there however, some people might not
want the soup, maybe they want to go over to the raw ingredients and eat them. They would be weird,
but they can. Another idea that supports this model is that when new generations are born they might
not like the soup being made so they slowly while mom and dad are not watching change the soup
slightly to fit their palate. As social politics progressed some of the music that was rooted in either
racism or misogyny. The new generation of people changed the definition of how to be popular. Out
went the old fashioned older white man classical musicians and in came the younger more diverse
group of singers like Ella Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald would not of been able to be popular/as popular if not
for the progression of the United State s social society. White society started to recognize African
Americans as people and not as animals or property . Society picked out the ingredients they did not

law of torts
THE LAW OF TORTS INTRODUCTION The word tort is of French origin and is equivalent of the
English word wrong, and the Roman law term delict. It is derived from the Latin word tortum, which
means twisted or crooked. It implies conduct that is twisted or crooked. It is commonly used to mean a
breach of duty amounting to a civil wrong. Definition: a tort is defined as a civil wrong for which the
remedy is a common law action for unliquidated damages and which is not exclusively the breach of a
contract or the breach of a trust or other merely equitable obligation. A tort arises due to a person s
duty to others in generally which is created by one law or the other. A person who commits a tort is

act does not give rise to liability in tort. 2. Mental elements: Plaintiff may be required to show some

set by law. To determine fault, the following may be proved: a) Malice: In the popular sense, malice
means ill will or spite. In Law, it means i) intentional doing of a wrongful act and, ii) improper motive.
b) Intention: i.e. where a person does a wrongful act knowing the possible consequences likely to
arise, he is said to have intended that act, and is therefore at fault. c) Recklessness: i.e. where a person
does an act without caring what its consequences might be, he is at fault. d) Negligence: i.e. where the
circumstances are such that a person ought to have foreseen consequences of his act and avoided it
altogether, he would be at fault if he bothers not. e) Motive: Motive is the ulterior objective or purpose
of doing an act and differs from intention. 3. Malfeasance, misfeasance and non feasance:
Malfeasance‟ refers to the commission of a wrongful act which is actionable per se and do not require
proof of intention or motive. „Misfeasance‟ is applicable to improper performance of some lawful act,
for example, where there is negligence.

In recent years, airlines build a closer relationship, especially European airlines and Chinese airlines.
Europe is the headstream of airplane, but compared to North America, European aviation is a little bit
weak on the ridership. In late 1990s and early 2000s, Europe had more interactions with American
aviation. In recent years, Europe set China as a new partner. European aviation is trying to expand its
international market through increasing new cooperation.
In recent years, the relationship between Chinese and European Aviation is getting closer. The
strongest evidence is that Chinese government and European Union have signed a 5 year work
agreement for reducing the economic burden in aviation industry, preserving aviation safety and
environmental compatibility. European Union and China emphasized the importance of this project by
preparing over 10 million euro as its budget. The detailed work plan was reviewed and updated in
September 2016. This is the first official cooperation in European and Chinese aviation, which is
managed by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Civil Aviation Administration of
China.
In terms to those individual airlines, there is another event that caught the public attention is that the
chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Carsten Spohr and Mr. Song

Goldman Sachs On Wall Street
Goldman Sachs on Wall Street Goldman Sachs was founded in 1869 with a humble purpose of
providing loans to small business and creating a market for the loans through commercial paper.
However, in the late 1920s the business drifted from its humble roots and took on an investment
strategy. As years went by, the company grew bigger and bigger until it was extremely successful.
During this time the company made many of decisions that would be considered unethical or gray ,
these decisions may not be considered illegal, however, they are not fair to the businesses clients or
employees.
Gray Ares of Goldman s
While reading the case study, what was up with Wall Street? The Goldman Standard and Shades of
Gray I came across numerous actions that would be considered gray, meaning they may not
necessarily be illegal, but when looking at them from a business perspective they could be considered
unethical. The first gray area I came across was when Goldman bought 90% of their shares with their
own money to make the business appear more successful, leading the public to buy the remaining
shares. They then sold the share they had purchased for more money, allowing them to purchase more
companies. Second, the company took part in laddering; laddering is defined as the promotion of
inflated pre IPO prices for the sake of obtaining a greater allotment of the offering (Laddering, 2016) .

ABSTRACT
In the grid new renewable resources are added to extract more power. This adds more power quality
issues to grid connection. A Power quality problem is an occurrence manifested as a nonstandard
voltage, current or frequency that results in a failure or a mis operation of end user equipment. This
paper investigates the use of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is connected at a point of
common coupling with Battery Energy Storage System(BESS)to overcome of a power quality issues
of a wind farm equipped with variable speed wind turbines driving Double Fed Induction Generators
(DFIG). A physical control scheme, including four control loops: ac voltage, dc voltage, ac active
current and ac reactive current controllers, is pre specified for the STATCOM. A synthetic algorithm is
proposed to embed these physical control loops in the output feedback path. The simulation results
demonstrated that under various system disturbances, the proposed mode decoupling STATCOM is
effective in regulating IG terminal voltage.

Adoption Programs Help Increase Dog Adoptions
Many people understand the awful living conditions in animal shelters. Upon entering, one
immediately notices the stench of unwashed animals, the dirt and grime that coat the walls, and the
pleading, desperate faces of the inhabitants. While this is a serious issue, there is a far more important
one at hand: the euthanization, or killing, of healthy animals in shelters. In a population chart of dogs
in the United States, over a third (2.4 million) died in shelters (Ortega Pacheco Jiménez Coello 235).
The high number of dogs killed in shelters emphasizes the need to prevent shelter animal euthanasia.
In order to save the lives of healthy shelter animals, methods such as initiating adoption programs,
desexing companion animals, increasing volunteer and staff effectiveness, and raising community
awareness must be enforced.
Specialized adoption programs help decrease the number of animals in shelters, thus reducing the
number euthanized. At a shelter in Louisiana, the employees began an adoption program designed to
increase dog adoptions. The dogs chosen for the program were given to foster homes, which were
tasked with marketing and finding permanent homes for the dogs. The program decreased the number
of dogs staying in the shelter, which in turn reduced the euthanasia rate. Using a program such as this
in all communities would reduce the staff time, daily care costs, and shelter housing needed (Mohan
Gibbons 2). If implementing a similar program at every shelter or

The Positive Aspects Of Imperialism
Imperialism is described in The American history as a The quest for colonial empires . This was
something new for the newly developed country, The request for more natural resources was at its

expanding its power and influence the United State was more than eager to get into this river that

because it will help spread the American way of life such as democracy. However, this idea was not
fully explored by the Americans, they headed into a battlefield with weapons and crafty strategy, but

Americans in today s worldwide imperialism as a positive idea or negative?. Imperialism is viewed by
many an immoral act even if its initial reason was thoughtful, suppression of the American way of life
and the after effect is a stain on the nation that way never be wiped out. American must begin to look

Elizabeth Bennet Individualism
The society of 18th century England was incredibly rigid and defined. There was little to no
movement between classes and every person s role was clearly outlined. However, in the novel, Pride
and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy do not adhere to the typical
behaviors of this society. Elizabeth is individualistic and opinionated while Darcy transcends class
barriers. While both Elizabeth and Darcy stray from the social norm, through their love story and
subsequent marriage, Austen shows that individualism should be rewarded. Elizabeth has a unique,
outspoken, and willful nature that sets her apart from other characters. She represents individualism,
bourgeois initiative, natural energy, and a challenging ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He has a deep admiration for the social hierarchy, which is in stark contrast with Elizabeth s
individualistic nature. His 10,000 pounds a year, coupled with his pompous behavior, separate him
from others. Due to Darcy s wealth, aloofness, and disdain for those beneath him, he incarnates social
tradition, the aristocracy, stability, and respect for the past (Wilkes). Darcy exemplifies the highest
rank in the social order and because of this, exhibits an air of superiority. While speaking to Sir
William at the Lucas s party, Darcy states that he is fond of superior society (Austen, 28). This shows
that Darcy would rather not interact with people in the lower classes, which serves as an obstacle
toward his eventual engagement to Elizabeth. His tendencies toward arrogance and self importance
are not typical to people such as the Bennet s. Darcy s contempt for the lower classes alienate him
from Elizabeth. While expressing his love for her, he says, In vain I have struggled. It will not do
(Austen, 285). This suggests that Darcy did not want to love Elizabeth because of her status. Darcy is
attracted to Elizabeth because of her unusual behavior, however, in his first proposal to her, he shows
that he has tried to suppress his feelings. Darcy knows that he loves her, yet he tried to convince
himself that he does not have any feelings towards her, because he believes that she is beneath him.
This stems back to his traditional values. Darcy knows that he has a high status and is extremely
powerful, so he cannot understand why he is experiencing feelings toward someone who is so
significantly less wealthy than he is. Darcy is disdainful toward Elizabeth s status and connections,
and his temperament initially prevents them from being

On March 23rd, 1775, Patrick Henry delivered his Speech to the Virginia Convention. This speech

Laws Of Evidence
The laws of evidence have as their primary concern the protection of accused persons from wrongful
conviction. All other considerations, many being of marked significance, are to be weighted in light of
this crucial principle . Discuss.
The laws of evidence are crucial in both governing and administrating justice. They have been
carefully developed through many different statutory obligations and also developed through the
common law. It can be argued that the main aims of evidence are to fairly and justly seek the truth to a
crime, and if the court finds so, prosecute the accused. However, it can be noted that in both criminal
and civil crimes, the laws of evidence are centred around protecting the accused of misconduct, with

Blackburn (falsely convicted of sexual assault and murder) and Sam Hallam to name but a few. In all
of these cases there was a clear miscarriage of justice, and with most stemmed from the laws of
evidence being used improperly or not to protect the accused but to fit the crime to the man .
Projects such as the innocence project aim to combat these miscarriages of justice, but it must be
noted that for the purposes of whether the primary aims of the laws of evidence were to protect the
accused from wrongful conviction, would projects such as the innocence project have to be developed
to actively seek justice for those wrongfully convicted? Or should not the system devised by the laws
of evidence seek to prevent these miscarriages from happening in the first

The Narrative Voice in the Lovely Bones
In the novel The Lovely Bones (TLB) by Alice Sebold, the narrative voice is the key technique that
hooks the reader and compels him or her to turn over the page. While the author uses a number of
other literary techniques to draw the reader in, it is the narrator s voice that is this novel s most
interesting and appealing feature. The narrative voice in this novel is unique to other novels because
the narrator is a girl named Susie Salmon who is speaking from heaven. This is a distinctive point in
the novel because it gives us the story from the perspective from others and we experience themes in
the book that we never experienced before.
Firstly the narrator of the book TLB is a teenaged girl named Susie Salmon who has been raped at
murdered by a man named Mr. Harvey. Susie lived in a small American town and was killed in a
cornfield at the age of 14. We know that she is talking from the after life because she tells us from the
first page I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973 . She then starts to narrate the
novel from the afterlife. This perspective allows us this point of view to experience the narrator and
the people she is connected with in a way we have never touched upon before. Susie can tell the mood
of a person, what he/she is thinking at the time, what they are going to do next and it s because of the
way she can interpret the emotions of other people that makes the narrative voice of this novel it s
unique selling point

The Signs Of Shopping By Malcolm Gladwell
To be successful in a capitalistic government, you must be willing to step on the heads of those who
are below you, and claim their successes as your own. Advertisements within our capitalistic culture
act as a way to force the customer into buying what the corporate overlords want you to buy. Anne
Norton, author of The Signs of Shopping is a heavily published author, and has earned many awards in
her field. In her essay, she explains how businesses use advertisement techniques to increase the
profits in a retail store. Malcolm Gladwell, the author of The Science of Shopping is a staff writer for
the New Yorker. In his essay, he explains how Paco Underhill, a retail expert, taught many Forbes 500
companies how to create more opportunities to up sale to their customers. Norton shows how malls
and other shopping outlets only want one demographic to shop in their stores, and Gladwell shows
how stores utilize their internal structure to make more money. Both utilize a negative tone toward the
business practices shown in the articles, and demonstrate the manipulation of the consumer with the
usage of imagery within advertisements to show that capitalism is unethical. Manipulation of
consumers in stores and other establishments, is at a new high. Capitalism acts as the encouragement
to large corporations to use these controversial practices. Norton uses blunt language and Gladwell
explains the significance of retail to show how capitalism encourages manipulation. Norton used

Abolishing The Penny Essay
The penny, also known simply as the one cent coin, was first made about 230 years ago in 1787. The
first penny ever made was 100% copper and it was heavier and larger than the usual penny today. The
design itself was suggested by the famous Benjamin Franklin ( A Brief History of the U.S. Cent ).
Lately, people have talked about the idea of abolishing the penny, but others disagree. The penny
should not be abolished. Granted, pennies waste time. MoneyCrasher.com had this to say: Often, when
we pay with cash at a store, the total amount doesn t end in a multiple of $0.05... [so] we have to either

To begin, nickels cost more than pennies. An article on The Spruce says this: [The] Mint can make 5
pennies and still lose less money than making 1 nickel (Headley). This quoted information is basically
saying that it would cost less for five pennies to be made compared to just one nickel. The cost
difference is actually about 1.4 cents, which doesn t seem like much, but it may become a larger
problem when the money amount adds up in the end. Furthermore, if the penny were abolished and
the nation would be stuck using nickels, then the Mint would lose even more money. A popular
argument for the abolishment of the penny is that it wastes the money for the Mint. This is partly true,
but if the pennies were entirely eliminated, more nickels would be in demand, which would cost the
Mint more. Twenty nickels, which equals a dollar, costs about $1.54 to make, compared to a dollar
amount of pennies, which costs $1.26 to make. With all the pennies abolished, the number of nickels
made would have to double, which would subtract more money from the Mint, leaving them with
even money savings less than before

Pros And Cons Of Unveiling Secularism
Unveiling Secularism
I swear by my religion. I will die for it. But it is my personal affair. The state has nothing to do with it.
The state would look after your secular welfare, health, communications, foreign relations, currency
and so on, but not your or my religion. (Gandhi). When debating the word secularism , many people
will dispute that the public has become less religious and stopped believing in God. They assume that
a secular government is an anti religious one; a government that aims to reject religions. In fact,
secularism is the belief that religion should not be part of the affairs of the state or part of public
education. (YourDictionary). In other words, secularism is the belief that government and religion don
t influence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea of secularism appears a little bit strange for some people and some countries. At first, fanatic
people refuse to make any change to their lives and consider this concept (secularism) illegal and will
separate them from God: they think that secularism will abolish religions and decrease the number of
religious people. They believe that the only law is the law of God. For example, homosexual couples
are free to do whatever they want (they become able to marry for instance) due to the law of
secularism. Thus, those religious people take this example to oppose secularism because for them
homosexuality is a sin. In addition, separating religion from the state is a difficult task as Elizabeth
Shakman Hurd mentioned: The creation of the category of religion and its demarcation from politics is
a highly politicized decision that is not subject to a final settlement, and the pretense of a final
settlement exacerbates international conflict rather than diminishing it. ( Hurd 235). The most
difficulty that faces secular people is that they are assailed by all the religions because those secular
people are minorities and cannot afford the pressure imposed on them. In view of this fact, each
secular human being will be neglected and considered as enemy which is not the case. Therefore,
being a secular person may lead to different hitches. On the other hand, some secular people try to
trigger problems and conflicts between religious people and themselves. So even in secularism you
find extreme positions that lead to conflict like the militant secularism. As Simone Chambers said that
we have three types of secularism: militant, restrictive and open secularism. What makes secularism
difficult is the Militant secularism because it is mistrustful and suspicious of

Compare And Contrast David And Bathesheba
Several things have not changed over ancient times very girl craves to be pursued, every man
struggles with lust, and the Lord can use ordinary humans to do extraordinary things. These are world
wide things and have been around since the beginning of time. We as girls desire to be irreplaceable
and want to be wanted. Even Christian culture has played into this. Boaz pursued Ruth in a way that
greatly displayed the love of Christ. They were a lot like spaghetti and meatballs great by themselves
but a powerhouse when combined. The old testament also documents the hardships in relationships in
our fallen world. There are also sweet records of the works He has done in peoples lives. And the
result of immovable faith. We can learn from people s triumphs and failures in the Bible. David and
Bathesheba story was a clear warning not too think too highly of one s ability to say no because even

She truly trusted in the Lord s timing. She lived humbly and walked in Christ like love unintentionally
setting an incredible example that wont ever go out of date. Hannah s husband was a bigamist and her
sister wife Peninnah would try to intentionally hurt her feelings. She longed for a son, not to fulfill
selfish desires but so she could raise him to love and serve the Lord. She has a pure heart and wanted
nothing more than to raise one of her own to be a servant of the Lord. Even in today s sin infested
world when someone has an extraordinary mother who loves the Lord and consistently instills grace in
her children it can really show in their every day eyes. Hannah and her husband Elkanah had a deep
love for one another despite having a third party in their strange love triangle. It was obvious that
Hannah did not just seek to be a Godly mother but she sought to be a wife who showed the love of
Christ. And instead of distancing herself from the Lord when it seemed as if she might never become a
mother she poured out her heart

The Problem Of The Hospital Emergency
The world hospital comes from Latin word hopes, which means a visitor or host who receives a
visitor. That is why in the early century, the primary goal of the hospital was to serve the poor. Torrens
(1993) states, In the early 20 the century, with the establishment of consistent medical education,
hospitals became more accepted across socioeconomic classes and became the symbol of medicine.
Since hospitals now requires more training and specialization for workers, furthermore, need
sophisticated material to delivery services, hospitals passed the poorhouses to the symbol of the
institutionalizations of health care said Niles (1994). Hospitals almost lost the duty to provide care to
people in emergency because they turned patients away who cannot pay or indigents. That is why
many people are afraid to dial 911 now even though they have an important emergency to go to the
hospital emergency because of fear to turn way. This situation if not remedy can cause people to die
when they could be saved if they would admit to the hospital emergency.
Today, admitting to the hospital is so expensive that makes it very difficult to those who do not have
insurance to get in when there are sick. This issue becomes so common that retains the concerns of
many. For that, the government intervenes by creating institutions such as the Emergency Medical
Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and the Consolidated Omnibus reconciliation Act (COBRA)
created and passed by the US congress in 1986 to

Seidman On Heterosexuality
Heterosexuality is a modern invention means that it is a manmade concept, and it is only recently that
heterosexuality was constituted by defining homosexual desires/identity as the deviant desires/identity,
thereby normalizing the heterosexual desires/identity as the normal and proper sex desire (Seidman,
2003). Heterosexuality has been socially constructed, because what it means to be heterosexual is
different across the time: the contemporary definition of heterosexuality is linked with the identity, but
the nineteenth century definition of heterosexuality indicated a reproductive drive or behavior
(Seidman, 2005; 46). Seidman elaborates that the heterosexuality only became an identity, because
societal changes that took place in

  • 2. Culture, Leadership and Staffing at Xerox Culture, Leadership and Staffing at Xerox Leadership After much reorganization and movement of leadership, Anne Mulcahy took over the helm of Xerox. Anne was a popular 24 year Xerox veteran promoted to president and chief operating officer when her predecessor Thoman was fired. Anne was a straight talker. She was very decisive in her decision making and took responsibility when she made an error. So much so that analysts were astonished Anne when conceded that Xerox had an unsustainable business model. However, Mulcahy later backed away from this statement, saying that she meant only that the company needed to cut operating costs and redirect investment from money losing to high margin businesses. Bloomberg magazine report ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Brazilian subsidiary, long the company s largest source of profit outside the U.S., was reeling from colossal currency translation losses and soaring interest rates. In North America, productivity was deteriorating as the sales force braced for the reorganization scheduled to begin in January. All the while, Xerox strengthened its core business by maintaining an organization wide focus on innovation. Even with all of the cost cutting we did, we didn t take a dollar out of research and development, Mulcahy said. Xerox hit a record high of nearly $64 a share in May, 1999, just three weeks after Thoman replaced Allaire as CEO. Today, the stock trades around $7, a few dollars above the price at which it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1961. The evisceration of $38 billion in shareholder wealth already qualifies Xerox as a corporate catastrophe of the first order. And the company s woes are not over yet not by a long shot. Xerox posted a loss of $198 million over the last three months of 2000, the largest quarterly loss in a decade. By even the most optimistic forecast (its own), the company will not edge back into the black until the second half of this year, at the earliest. With $2.6 billion in debt coming due this year and a $7 billion bank loan looming in 2002, Xerox is cutting spending, firing workers, and trying to raise as much as $4 billion by selling off assets. ... • 3. Sompack a Turkish Manufacturer ABSTRACT SomPack which is a Turkish manufacturer, had to make a hard decision about its substantial corporate strategy, because in the mid 1990s SomPack realized that China was a threat. China had been making inroads into U.S. Market. The main issue was the labor cost differentials, so SomPack tried to set some ways to reduce labor costs and increase the capacity. The company took a step to product assembly that is the lipstick mechanism and the mechanism was high volume component that has multistep process. They had a machine custom designed, but the machine was so sensitive to operate and defects occurred. Then, they decided to redesign the parts of assembly to decrease material cost, but it also did not work well. If they would have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, it causes some problems about the moulds and to fix they had to pay much more for labor costs. Another criterion is SomPack`s customers` demand cheap products. Moreover, SomPack loss their suppliers and the customers due to the Chinese affects in cosmetic market. Lastly, large customers who could control suppliers in China increasingly preferred to deal with them directly. Customers increasingly approached SomPack for smaller order quantities, and when they needed to change their product mix often, so SomPack could not have depended on Chinese suppliers for such products either. FACTS Facts are related to criteria. There are some economic and also social facts that are connected to economic ones. Economic facts are that the company was trying to reduce labor costs, product quality by the use of cheaper raw material, use of cheaper costs and machines. Also, the social facts occurred due to loss of customers. Those customers started to look for new countries to find a new company. The decision I made from the list was listed as UAMS Patient Education Patient Care Services with Barbie Brunner. I contacted her and even went up to her office to see if it was possible I can intern in her department. She stated, she is interviewing an internship coordinator, so give her a few weeks. The few weeks will be around when the semester start, so that wouldn t help me at all. I went to this women name Katherine Metz (I go to church with her). During graduation season for high school students, she was recognized for University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) number one Nurse Educator Award. A lightbulb pop above my head. I thought to myself that I should talk to her about an internship at UAMS dealing with educating patients. She ask for some personal information and she emailed me back within two days. Dana Smith Patient Education Specialist emailed me and told me she will be handling getting me processed to intern with them. I went in for an interview. They told me the general information about the department, what will be taking place on the first day, scheduling, dress code, lunch, parking, and how and where to get the badge. • 5. Language And Sexism In Language Language plays an important role in society. In large extent it is a mirror of it while at the same time it functions as means of constructing and maintaining that society. As a phenomenon of society, language reflects all the perspectives of human society. Sexism in language has been a controversial topic in sociolinguists since its inception. In this chapter, a historical overview will be made and a definition of sexist language will be provided. Sexism in language exists when language devalues members of a certain gender. Sexist language has many definitions but for the sake of this essay the following definition will be used: [a statement] is sexist if its use constitutes, promotes or exploits an unfair or irrelevant or impertinent distinction between the sexes (Vetterling Braggin 1981:3). Over the years there have been many concerns about gender and language which can be traced to linguistics and to feminist theory. As a research field it developed side by side with the second wave of feminism during the 1960s and 1970s, despite the fact that gender and language have been a debatable issue for a long time. Around that time many articles and books were written which addressed two questions; the essence and importance of gender bias in language and of gender differences in language use. As Lakoff ... • 6. Media Panics A media panic or often referred to as a moral panic, is a term that describes how the media is formulating issues amongst our society. Over time, our culture has shifted and caused for many conclusions regarding media panics and the relationship between youth and the media culture. Based upon previous knowledge and course readings, I have drawn a very disturbing conclusion; this being that no matter what age, children are willing or non willingly now under surveillance to determine what kind of role media is playing in their lives. With what I have gathered from the readings and class lectures, most authors strongly believe that different forms of media directly influence children s thinking or perception. What authors and researchers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The authors discuss the objectifying gaze, which I believe has a lot to do with how females are perceived with the usages of photo altering technology and online visual cultures. The theoretical framework of the objectification theory places female bodies in a sociocultural context with the aim of illuminating the lived experiences and mental health risks of girls and women who encounter sexual objectification (Frederickson Roberts, 174). The pose and the filter that a young woman chooses to enhance the beauty of her photo is argued to read just that, and it allows for others viewing them to assume their lived experiences, how these young women generally are, the practices they engage in, etc. What we tend to forget, especially in an age where digital culture is so prominent, is that a picture is a snapshot of a moment in time. According to Drotner (1999), the idea that new media has become a threat and a main cause of moral panics to young people is problematic because it infers that they are effected by what they are exposed to. This assumption of children, introduces to our society that every piece of media may be able to change them. What we are telling ourselves is that young people are followers and do not have a mind of their own; they are vulnerable, innocent and easily influenced. Media panics introduce the idea that there should be some sort of protection for children from the dangers media may introduce. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Industrial Sectors Of Northern Ireland And The Republic Of... An instrument in which governments use as a method to intervene in international trade and investment as mentioned earlier are tariffs. A tariff is a form of tax established on foreign goods and services, which are imported. Tariffs are generally used to restrict international trade, as they increase the price of imported goods and services which as a result, makes those commodities more expensive to consumers. Also, a tariff can be exactly like a quota, which will be discussed later, if, permitting the same import volume, the domestic output and prices are identical under the alternative trade policies (Fung, 1989). By restricting trade of imported foreign goods and services through tariffs but increasing the costs, it provides protection to domestic producers against the foreign competitors. As seen from the experience from the Irish case study of a comparison between the industrial sectors of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to examine the effects of protection on industries specialization and trade, tariffs can play a major part in an industry s and its surrounding industries performance (McAleese, 1977). Governments employ the use of tariffs for many reasons; firstly, they could be protecting domestic employment because as the competition of imported goods that threaten domestic industries increase, it could cause these domestic firms to fire workers or even shift production abroad to cut costs to stay competitive. Governments can also apply a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hylas is meant to represent the views of a materialist. A materialist believes everything has a foundation in matter, and therefore humans see objects as they are. In the first dialogue between Philonous and Hylas, they discuss their understanding of the senses as related to matter. More specifically, they are in a debate about whether the senses are a necessary part of matter. Hylas believes matter is a substance that exists without someone needing to perceive it. • 22. Adoption Programs Help Increase Dog Adoptions Many people understand the awful living conditions in animal shelters. Upon entering, one immediately notices the stench of unwashed animals, the dirt and grime that coat the walls, and the pleading, desperate faces of the inhabitants. While this is a serious issue, there is a far more important one at hand: the euthanization, or killing, of healthy animals in shelters. In a population chart of dogs in the United States, over a third (2.4 million) died in shelters (Ortega Pacheco Jiménez Coello 235). The high number of dogs killed in shelters emphasizes the need to prevent shelter animal euthanasia. In order to save the lives of healthy shelter animals, methods such as initiating adoption programs, desexing companion animals, increasing volunteer and staff effectiveness, and raising community awareness must be enforced. Specialized adoption programs help decrease the number of animals in shelters, thus reducing the number euthanized. At a shelter in Louisiana, the employees began an adoption program designed to increase dog adoptions. The dogs chosen for the program were given to foster homes, which were tasked with marketing and finding permanent homes for the dogs. The program decreased the number of dogs staying in the shelter, which in turn reduced the euthanasia rate. Using a program such as this in all communities would reduce the staff time, daily care costs, and shelter housing needed (Mohan Gibbons 2). If implementing a similar program at every shelter or ... • 24. Elizabeth Bennet Individualism The society of 18th century England was incredibly rigid and defined. There was little to no movement between classes and every person s role was clearly outlined. However, in the novel, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy do not adhere to the typical behaviors of this society. Elizabeth is individualistic and opinionated while Darcy transcends class barriers. While both Elizabeth and Darcy stray from the social norm, through their love story and subsequent marriage, Austen shows that individualism should be rewarded. His 10,000 pounds a year, coupled with his pompous behavior, separate him from others. Due to Darcy s wealth, aloofness, and disdain for those beneath him, he incarnates social tradition, the aristocracy, stability, and respect for the past (Wilkes). Darcy exemplifies the highest rank in the social order and because of this, exhibits an air of superiority. While speaking to Sir William at the Lucas s party, Darcy states that he is fond of superior society (Austen, 28). This shows that Darcy would rather not interact with people in the lower classes, which serves as an obstacle toward his eventual engagement to Elizabeth. His tendencies toward arrogance and self importance are not typical to people such as the Bennet s. Darcy s contempt for the lower classes alienate him from Elizabeth. While expressing his love for her, he says, In vain I have struggled. It will not do (Austen, 285). This suggests that Darcy did not want to love Elizabeth because of her status. Darcy is attracted to Elizabeth because of her unusual behavior, however, in his first proposal to her, he shows that he has tried to suppress his feelings. Darcy knows that he loves her, yet he tried to convince himself that he does not have any feelings towards her, because he believes that she is beneath him. This stems back to his traditional values. Darcy knows that he has a high status and is extremely powerful, so he cannot understand why he is experiencing feelings toward someone who is so significantly less wealthy than he is. While the author uses a number of other literary techniques to draw the reader in, it is the narrator s voice that is this novel s most interesting and appealing feature. An article on The Spruce says this: [The] Mint can make 5 pennies and still lose less money than making 1 nickel (Headley). This quoted information is basically saying that it would cost less for five pennies to be made compared to just one nickel. The cost difference is actually about 1.4 cents, which doesn t seem like much, but it may become a larger problem when the money amount adds up in the end. Furthermore, if the penny were abolished and the nation would be stuck using nickels, then the Mint would lose even more money. A popular argument for the abolishment of the penny is that it wastes the money for the Mint. This is partly true, but if the pennies were entirely eliminated, more nickels would be in demand, which would cost the Mint more. Twenty nickels, which equals a dollar, costs about $1.54 to make, compared to a dollar amount of pennies, which costs $1.26 to make. When debating the word secularism , many people will dispute that the public has become less religious and stopped believing in God. They assume that a secular government is an anti religious one; a government that aims to reject religions. The idea of secularism appears a little bit strange for some people and some countries. At first, fanatic people refuse to make any change to their lives and consider this concept (secularism) illegal and will separate them from God: they think that secularism will abolish religions and decrease the number of religious people. They believe that the only law is the law of God. For example, homosexual couples are free to do whatever they want (they become able to marry for instance) due to the law of secularism. Thus, those religious people take this example to oppose secularism because for them homosexuality is a sin. In addition, separating religion from the state is a difficult task as Elizabeth Shakman Hurd mentioned: The creation of the category of religion and its demarcation from politics is a highly politicized decision that is not subject to a final settlement, and the pretense of a final settlement exacerbates international conflict rather than diminishing it. ( Hurd 235). The most difficulty that faces secular people is that they are assailed by all the religions because those secular people are minorities and cannot afford the pressure imposed on them. In view of this fact, each secular human being will be neglected and considered as enemy which is not the case. Therefore, being a secular person may lead to different hitches. On the other hand, some secular people try to trigger problems and conflicts between religious people and themselves. So even in secularism you find extreme positions that lead to conflict like the militant secularism. Torrens (1993) states, In the early 20 the century, with the establishment of consistent medical education, hospitals became more accepted across socioeconomic classes and became the symbol of medicine. Since hospitals now requires more training and specialization for workers, furthermore, need sophisticated material to delivery services, hospitals passed the poorhouses to the symbol of the institutionalizations of health care said Niles (1994).
