Cultural Influence Of The Early Medieval Era
Exam 2: Cultural Influence One prominent theme that has been encountered throughout this course
has been the idea of influence from one culture to another; a cultures influence on another can impact
things such as stylistic transition, and transfer of subject matter. The combination of local traditions
and newly introduced ideas will allow for new types of artwork to be produced. Artwork during the
Early Medieval era, Romanesque era, and Gothic era demonstrates how local and imported ideas
intermingle to produce new things. In order to fully express the idea of cultures integrating local ideas
with ideas of other cultures to form new artworks, focusing specifically on architecture will allow for
the theme to be fully justified. During the dynamic Early Medieval era, which dates back to 500 1000
BCE, European identity was developed and stimulated by Europeans interactions with other cultures
in Eurasia and the Mediterranean. During the Early Medieval era early Christian basilicas such as
Santa Sabina and San Paolo fuori le Mura (St. Paul s Outside the Walls) maintained the basic structure
of the Roman basilica, and incorporated local ideas, which include added Christian elements such as
the transept and the ambo. The Romanesque era is the art of Europe from approximately 1000 AD to
the rise of the Gothic style in the 13th century. Romanesque architecture retained many basic features
of Roman architectural style, which include round headed arches, vaults, apses, and

The core responsibilities of operations managers tend to be similar across many industries. The
planning of various company operations and activities is another major concern of the operations
manager. Operations managers tend to determine which products are bought and sold, what prices
they are bought or sold for and to whom they will be marketed. The operations manager also helps
plan and coordinate activities between various departments such as determining what types of sales
promotions the company will engage in. (Chron.com) Operation managers add value to a company s
products or services by ensuring that business operations are efficient in terms of using as few
resources as needed, and effective in terms of meeting customer requirements. An operations manager
typically ensures smooth operation of various processes that contribute to the production of goods and
services of an organization. (Buzzle.com) http://www.buzzle.com/articles/operations manager

Comparing Ghiberti, Hieronymus Bosch, And Christopher Wren
Looking back on the past, art, music, and literature played an important role in society. Compared to
today, it still has that same effect. It s inspiring and changing society in many different ways. Art has a
power of expressing what we humans can t explain. It brings out a feeling in all of us that s
unimaginable and unexplainable. Religion has served as a primary subject matter of art. However,
there are many views when it comes to the relationship between humans and God. Three artists from
three different time periods explore the comparisons between art and religion. Lorenzo Ghiberti,
Hieronymus Bosch, and Christopher Wren have explored the idea that art has influenced religion and
that it s meaning is one we cannot fully explain. All three ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Paul s Cathedral, designed by Christopher Wren represents religion because it had a profound
influence on society during that time. When the Great Fire of 1666 occurred, London faced many
struggles. Almost 100,000 people were left homeless according to our text and society felt powerless.
They had lost faith in life and ultimately God. When the St. Paul s Cathedral was finished, it gave the
city hope for a greater world full of many opportunities. The use of certain shapes and simple
symmetry resembled true architecture and power. This building fully supports that art had great
influence on religion in London. It was a place where people could feel safe and pray. It was a cultural

The Regression Equation For Multiple Regression
Assignment 3C 1) The regression equation for the table is as follows: Y= 1.51x1 +( 2.57)x2 +1.24x3
+9.60x4 +75.46. The equation for multiple regression is Y=B1x1 +B2x3 +B4x4 +a, where Y is the
dependent variable, b is the coefficient, a is the constant and x is the independent variable. 2) The
confidence interval I have applied for all the coefficients is 95%, meaning there is a 5% chance the
results fall outside the interval. The education coefficient is between 1.95 and 1.07. The gender
coefficient is between 0.07 and 5.21 at a 95% confidence level. The immigrant coefficient is between
4.08 and 1.6 at 95% confidence level, and the religion coefficient is between 12.76 and 6.44 at a 95%
confidence level. 3) The confidence interval is one of the parameters that estimates or demonstrates
the relationship between the results found in the sample and a characteristic in the population. There is
a 95% probability that the education level of the population is between 1.95 and 1.07. Since the null
value(0) is not part of the interval, there is statistical significance. The results for gender fall between
0.07 and 5.21, since the confidence interval includes 0, it is not statically significant. The results for
immigration fall between 4.08 and 1.6, since the result also includes 0 in the interval, there is no
statistical significance. The confidence interval results for religion fall between 12.76 and 6.44,
proving there is statistical significance between the

Total Quality Management Is Defined As A Companywide Essay
Total quality management is defined as a companywide effort to continually improve the ways people,
machines, and systems accomplish work. Management gurus William Edwards Deming, Joseph
Moses Juran, and Philip Bayard Crosby and their philosophies on improving quality and performance
excellence lead to frameworks. The U.S. Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the
international ISO 9000 certification and the Six Sigma concept are frame works known worldwide. By
implementing these frameworks and concepts, companies have improved overall quality from the
products and services as well as improving the employees and customers standard of living. When the
company goes to implement total quality management, some of its core values are driven in order to
improve the quality of the company. Those values are having methods and processes designed to meet
the needs of internal and external customers, giving every employee in the organization training in
quality, having quality designed into a product or service so that errors are prevented from occurring,
rather than being detected and corrected in an error prone product or service, the organization
promotes cooperation with vendors, suppliers, and customers to improve quality and hold down cost,
and managers measure progress with feedback based on data. (Page 41 42, Noe)
The concept of total quality management was applying statistical theory to control the quality of
products. Later after world war two, Japan made

Recommendations For Tesco
Giant is one of the largest retailers in Malaysia. Giant store was founded by the Teng family in 1944.
The store started as a simple grocery store in one of the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur in 1944 and
expanded with the opening of the Teng Minimarket Centre in Bangsar in 1974. Its purpose was to
offer their customers wide range of food products at lowest prices as possible. As years gone by the
store reputation grew and so did the business. Dairy Farm, which captured Giant in 1999, recognized
that the leading to Giant s success had been its capability to continuously offer value for money
products. It maintained this basis principle even as it began turning Giant into a national and

The Long Term Dispute Over Which Is Better, East Coast Vs....
The long term dispute over which is better, east coast vs. west coast, will undoubtedly continue until
this country no longer exists. While both coasts offer travelers and natives a variety of places to eat,
things to do, and places to see, California, North Carolina, and South Carolina want to put their states
on the map with their interesting history and ways of living. Due to so much variety on each coast,
there is something on each side for everyone. More often than not, people picture California and the
Carolinas to be polar opposites. This way of thinking comes from the idea that Hollywood, the city of
dreams, consumes California entirely. Consequently, travelers must dig deep to find the hidden gems
throughout each state. There will always be more than what meets the eye.
There are hundreds of military bases throughout the United States of America. California and the
Carolinas contribute to that statistic. Home to almost 30 different bases, California boasts the most
commonly known Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps Recruit Depot
San Diego, and the Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, home to the Navy SEALS. One of the very
prevalent military communities within California is San Diego. There is an overwhelming sense of
pride in the Armed Forces around every corner in what is a relatively large city. North and South
Carolina are very familiar with that same sense of pride.

Effects Of Slavery On African American Slavery
Through out this chapter we discover that the Europeans tend to take things that do not belong to them
and also like to take credit for numerous things as well. We also learn that they like to kidnap others to
do their hard labor while that stand back and making a living off of others hard labor. During this
process I do believe it was the start of slavery for the African Americans. For the Europeans it meant
the freedom to treat people any kind of way rather than treating someone like another human being.

everything they claimed, majority of the time was created by some one of another nationality. The

disputing whites authority. When the slaves tried to resist order there were consequences put in to

Radioactivity Lab Report
Objective
Radioactivity is present all throughout the environments on earth, which relates to the unstable atomic
nuclei. Going into detail, radioactivity occurs in unstable atomic nuclei and is caused by the
spontaneous disintegration of atomic nuclei. Radiation is used in numerous ways that are used in
experiments and medical procedures. In this article, radioactivity will be defined, the three types of
radioactivity will be explained, and the different methods of radiation will be illustrated.
Introduction Nuclei are formed with a higher stability after unstable atomic nuclei spontaneously
decompose, and this process is called radioactivity. Therefore, radioactivity refers to the particles that
are released from nuclei due to nuclear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The alpha particles have an atomic mass of 4 and a charge of +2. When an alpha particle is released
from the nucleus, the mass number of the particle decreases by four units and the atomic number
decreases by two units. An example of this would be where the helium nucleus is the alpha particle.
The energy is a collection of stable nucleons, and those heavier nuclei that can be perceived as
collections of alpha particles, such as carbon 12.01 or oxygen 16.00 are also stable. Beta radiation is a
stream of electrons that are called beta particles. When the beta particle is released, a neutron is
transformed to a proton in the nucleus, thus maintaining the mass number of the nucleus. Although,
the atomic number increases by one unit. An example of this occurring is when the electron is the beta
particle. Pursuing this further, gamma rays are high energy photons with a very short wavelength of
0.0005 to 0.1 nm. The emission of gamma radiation results from an energy change within the atomic
nucleus. Gamma emission changes neither the atomic number nor the atomic mass. Alpha and beta
emission are often accompanied by gamma emission, as an excited nucleus drops to a lower and more
stable energy

Notre Dame de Paris
Abstract
Notre Dame of Paris is one of the most prominent cathedrals in the land of Paris and portrays many
diversified Gothic characteristics. This research essay will explore the cathedral in detail while
emphasizing on the influence of Gothic architecture on the cathedral. Notre Dame of Paris bears all
the structural features of a Gothic cathedral including the famous rose window. By far, the Gothic
style has influenced the entire design of Notre Dame of Pairs. If there were other influences, it would
be too minor to be taken noticed of. The construction began in year 1163. Being a significant building

This majestic cathedral decorated the land of Paris, dominating both the history of architecture as well
as religion history. The cathedral still stands proudly after enduring an eventful history over many
centuries. Truly a fascinating historic building to behold, Our Lady of Paris , another term for Notre
Dame of Paris, portrays many diversified characteristics which will help identify a structure as Gothic.
One may lay eyes upon this building and refer it to one of Gothic s grand structure. For many, their
first concept of Gothic architecture derives from some reference to this majestic construction. In this
research, I shall consider the following questions as an approach to appreciate and comprehend Notre
Dame de Paris s architectural aesthetic and value better:
1. What are the obvious influences of the Gothic style to the cathedral?
2. Has the Gothic style influenced the building completely or only part of it? If it was only partially
influenced, what may be the other influence that affected the design of the structure?
3. How and when the cathedral was build?
4. What is the importance of this cathedral and how did the local people accepted the cathedral? As a
brief introduction to Gothic, the label Gothic was coined in Italy. It was during Renaissance, as a
derogatory reference to the art and architecture of these earlier centuries (Introduction:

Factor V Leiden is a single nucleotide substitution Guanine to Adenine at nucleotide 1691 which is
responsible for the single amino acid replacement (Arg506Gln).
Factor V Leiden is inactivated by the protein C and S nearly 10 times slower than the normal Factor V,
resulting in increased clotting factor that is why it is commonly called APC Resistance.
Factor V Leiden is the most common genetic cause of venous thrombosis, which leads to deadly
pulmonary embolism when the part of the clot breaks away to the pulmonary artery. It is involved in
20 40% of cases and is present in 3% of the general population.
The other major genetic causes of venous thrombosis (deficiencies of protein C and S) together
account for only 5 10% of cases.
Factor V Leiden increases the risk of venous thrombosis 3 8 times for heterozygous (one bad gene
inherited) and substantially more, 30 140 times for homozygous (two bad gene inherited) individuals.
2% of the general population was found to be heterozygous.
Risk is increased still further in situations such as pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, estrogen therapy,
malignancy, diabetes mellitus, immobilization, surgery, trauma, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking
or long time travel (commonly called economy class syndrome). In these cases risk of clotting can
increase dramatically.

probability that change will occur. If private organizations or volunteers attempted to enforce positive
environmental changes, it would not be as effective since they do not hold as much authority as the

would also take much longer for change to occur if the EPA did not oversee these additional

The first assesses the degree to which repeated researches yield the same results; the second is based
on the stability of measurements over time while the third is based on the similarity of measurements
within a given period of time. On the other hand, Joppe (2000) suggested that a valid research is one
that truly measures what it was intended to measure. In other words, a valid research is one that
provides true results.
Quantitative research involves the use of experimental and quantitative measures to test general
hypotheses (Hoepfl, 1997). Golafshani (2003) suggested that quantitative research is based on the
measurement and the analysis of the causal relationship between variables. Through quantitative
research, the researcher is familiarized with the concept to be studied and generates the hypothesis to
be tested. As such, the mathematical process takes the norm for analyzing the numeric data and the
information gathered takes a numeric form that can be quantified and summarized. Moreover,
according to Charles (1995), the final result of the quantitative research is usually expressed in
statistical terminologies. Another aspect of quantitative research, as seen from Golafshani (2003), is
that it emphasizes on the facts and causal. Therefore, a qualitative researcher should construct an
instrument, standardize it and administer it according to predetermined procedures. However, the

What Is The Elite Class In The Masque Of The Red Death
David Davis ENGL 313 001 Prof. Shelly Jarenski December 1st, 2017 Edgar Allan Poe s Critique of

the eccentric Prince Prospero and his affluent courtiers bask in the secluded comforts, and presumed

Although this tale takes place in an unnamed European country, history has proven the universal
nature of this dynamic; a dynamic which has been spoken against by many figures in America s
[literary] history. For instance, in A Model of Christian Charity, a sermon manual meant to instruct
Christians on how to act as good citizens in the New World, John Winthrop a Puritan lawyer
highlights the importance of both wealth and poverty in God s plan to maintain balance among his
elect: God Almighty in His most holy and wise providence, hath so disposed of the condition of
mankind, as in all times some must be rich, some poor, some high and eminent in power and dignity;
others mean and in submission. (Winthrop; 166). In Winthrop s eyes, this socio economic dichotomy

Shias Beliefs About Khums
Khums: refers to the religious obligation of a Muslim to pay one fifth of the spoils of war as tax. This
tax was paid to the Caliph or the head of state that was in charge at the time. Sunnis and Shias have
different beliefs about Khums. Shias believe that khums is applied to the business income and is paid
at the beginning of the financial year. Sunnis who are followers of Salafism acknowledge khums,
however the followers of the remaining four schools do not acknowledge it.
Tablighis: Tablighis are members of the Tablighi jamaat, an extremely orthodox Islamic movement
that follows the work of the Prophet to the letter. The jamaat was founded by Muhammad al

Although our number is very similar to those of Jewish people in this country, we have no comparison
in strength in terms of economic, political and educational strength. We do not have any Congressmen
or Senators. We do not control university boards or faculties. We do not have a single factory or
financial institution, which is able to employ Muslims in large numbers. Therefore, we cannot judge
the future of Islam by looking at the number of Muslims praying on earth or attending the conventions
and bazaars of ISNA. There have to be deeper indicators of our strength (Athar, 2008).
As stated by Dr. Athar, the future of Islam cannot solely depend on the spiritual actions of the
community. The quality of the Muslim people will determine the future of the religion. Muslims need
to practice peace, justice and equality that made the religion so appealing in the past. These righteous
qualities will make the public aware of the good we represent and hopefully wash away all the
negative connotations that were stuck to Muslims and Islam

A Cross-Examination Of Themes In Walden, By Henry David...
The Journey from Enslavement to Freedom, from Society to Nature: A Cross Examination of Themes
in Thoreau s Walden and Slavery in Massachusetts
Working Thesis
In Walden, Thoreau explains that to him, slavery is not only as simple as the historically common
definition of the physical enslavement of a man or woman to another man. Slavery, in the abstract, is
both mental and physical, and society represents a seemingly unavoidable, but somewhat overlooked
form of slavery put upon us all. Thoreau hypothesizes and experiments with the journey from
enslavement of society to freedom. What characterizes enslavement? Is it mental, physical, or both?
How do people go about attaining their freedom? Can we ever achieve it completely? The journey
from slavery to freedom is a prominent theme in Thoreau s writings. This essay cross examines these
themes in the first chapter of Walden ( Economy ) with a discourse delivered by Thoreau at an anti
slavery convention, Slavery in Massachusetts , and argues for an interpretation of Thoreau s concept
of the journey from enslavement to freedom: All of society represents enslavement, with everyone
being slaves in various degrees and forms, such as physical, mental, forced, voluntary, or self inflicted.
For Thoreau, the only paths to freedom are nature and God.

Cons Of Eugenics
The idea that one can improve the human race by careful selection of those who mate and produce
offspring is called eugenics. It is better understood as the process of selective breeding can improve
human society. The term eugenics is from the greek, meaning well born . The idea of eugenics is to
have a society be abundant with many wanted traits, during a movement called the melting pot where
people tried to solve their problems with the use of technology. Inquiries into Human Faculty and Its
Development, is the book in which Sir Francis Galton first mentioned the term eugenics. In the book
he says that humans believe that humans were disrupting evolution in maintaining the weak and sickly

The way eugenics will be used is by correcting genetic problems in embryos. Soon enough a parent
will be able to find out the accurate view of their child s genes, allowing any defects to be seen. If the
child seems perfectly healthy no changes will be made. On the other hand if a problem is spotted the
parents may choose to go through with gene therapy, also known as eugenics. This process will not
only be able to identify health problems, but also personality traits. It allows the baby to be deigned to
the parents desire. There are many pros and cons to this concept, which is a reason why there are
questions to whether the situation can be resolved or not. One of the greatest benefits of eugenics is
the possibility of fighting illnesses and curing types of cancer. The chances of cancer or genetic
illnesses is when the persons genes are altered and the traits are passed on to their children. A way to
prevent genetic illness is when the doctor injects an artificial human chromosome into the fertilized
egg, which will cause the child to cancel the effects of the illness as the child grows. A result of this
would be that people will be able to live longer and healthier lives. By using this method, there is a
possibility to creating the perfect child as it can possibly alter the behavioral and physical traits as
well. Although there are positive effects there can also be many drawbacks. In a way eugenics can be

National Health System ( Nhs ) Essay
National Health System (NHS) England (1800words) The National Health System began in 1948 with
the aim to provide free health care for the English thus removing health access inequities. This essay
considers two strengths of the NHS, being free health and locally responsive health care and two
weaknesses being the financial burden and unprecedented pressure on health care resources. One of
the strengths of the NHS England is residents receive free fully funded medical care that includes all
medical treatment, screenings including antenatal, dental, prescriptions, specialist referrals and
optometrists (NHS England, 2016). Furthermore, while being free at point of access, the NHS system
is an efficient, effective, care, safe, coordinated and patient centred system that was ranked number
two worldwide on equity (NHS England, 2016). Free healthcare supports Ham s (2010) claim that
being free at point of entry is a characteristic of a high performing health care system. The benefits of
free healthcare were that everyone was able to get the same medical treatment. The delivery of health
care through Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG s) is another strength. CCG s were created in
2012 following the passing of the Health and Social Care Act, to replace primary care trusts in
2013(NHS England, 2013). Their strength lies in their authority and purpose to provide health care
that is responsive to a geographical area and set patient number. They are clinically led, often by local

History of Health Insurance Essay
Healthcare didn t always exist in the United States. Before the 1920 s, most people didn t have health
coverage. Most people were treated at home and hardly anyone, except a few large employers offered
healthcare. Everyone else paid out of pocket. As the population shifted from rural areas to urban
centers, families lived in smaller homes with less room to care for sick family members (Faulkner
1960, p. 509). Increasing requirements for licensing and accreditation, in addition to a rising demand
for medical care, eventually led to rising costs. By the end of 1920s, there was an increased demand
for medical care and the costs of medical care increased.

Also, a lack of insurance is a huge financial burden for individuals and their families. Lack of health
insurance has social consequences, as well. Some diseases are highly contagious and can be spread
easily to family members, friends, colleagues, co workers and others, one may come in contact with.
With health insurance, these contagious diseases can be contained and cured or treated more quickly
and cost effectively. People without health insurance have limited, reduced access to services of
preventive care, like cancer screening.
Moreover, the benefits of expanding coverage outweigh the costs for added services. [4] Safety net
care from hospitals and clinics improves access to care but does not fully substitute for health
insurance. These findings are supported by much research, although some cautions are appropriate in
using these results. People with health insurance are protected against uncertain and high medical
expenses and are more likely to receive needed and appropriate health care. In addition, having health
insurance is associated with improved health outcomes and lower mortality, so employees with health
insurance are more likely to be productive workers. You do not pay income tax on health insurance
benefits so it is more valuable per dollar than the same amount in taxable pay. [5]

Reincarnation Is A Belief Of The Soul After Death
Reincarnation is a belief that has existed since ancient times. Not everybody believes in the theory, but
it is also the basis of some religions. Reincarnation is the rebirth of the soul after death, and it is
believed to happen to everyone. Some people even have memories of their past lives unlike others.
Reincarnation is an intriguing belief that could explain what happens to people after death.
I.A.
The one person who started the theory of reincarnation is unknown, but there are a few religions
believed to have started the theory in ancient times. Many Americans like to think of reincarnation as
a fantasy of supernatural Buddhists, Hindus, and aboriginal tribes, but there are many more religions
whose teachings say to believe. First, the subject of reincarnation comes up in the traditions of India.
Second, it is one of the core beliefs of hinduism Hindus have always believed in the theory (
Reincarnation ). Next, many people claim ancient Egyptians taught reincarnation. It is also believed to
be in ancient Greek mythology ( Reincarnation Mark ). Another believed culture to have studied
reincarnation in the early ages was the Greek Pre socratics. Finally, the religion, Jainism, mentions
reincarnation very early in their culture ( Reincarnation ).

Chief Bromden decides to elude others and troubles by pretending to be deaf and dumb. Since the
black assistant nurses believe that he isn t intelligent enough to understand their conversations, they
converse about confidential topics. This permits Bromden to gain insight on what is truly happening in
the hospital, or learning about the Big Nurse s plans in advance. I predict that he will learn valuable
information in the future since the staff believes him to be so incompetent. In a way, the Chief is an
actor playing the part of an ignorant patient, and instead of being paid for his acting, his recompense is
avoiding trouble and hearing secrets. A literary device used multiple times in the quote is repetition;

Chief Bromden is observing the Big Nurse and through her expression he creates this picture in his
mind of a robot, which oversees every movement, thought, and word said. Since she is described as a
robot, I imagine the nurse to be cold and have a metaphorical mask over her face at all times. In order
for her to maintain her value of order in the hospital, she must show no sign of affection or love in her
behavior. If she were to grow too attached to a patient, the smooth order of the hospital would turn
erratic because the patients could do whatever they want and receive little punishment in return. I
predict that the nurse must not be married or have any children, because she behaves so frigid and her
actions are script like. If she were to have a family, the BIg Nurse would sometimes show pity or
kindness to the patients. The quote contains both imagery and simile, because the nurse is compared to
a robot, and the narrator describes how the nurse keeps an eye on everything in the ward. The Big
Nurse is like a robot because Chief Bromden believes her to control everything that is happening in
the hospital, similar to a machine. In addition, the imagery in the quote depicts the nurse with wires
shooting out and sending constant signals, another indication of her power over the

The Effects Of Community On Parenting Practices
Running head: EFFECTS OF COMMUNITY ON PARENTING Sanchez | 2
The Effects of Community on Parenting Practices
Christina Sanchez
November 6th 2016
The definition of a community can vary by its culture and experiences. It is those differences that are
the framework for what any given community regards as normal and appropriate when it pertains to
parenting practices. These norms set the standards as to when and how parents should seek help from
others as well. Parenting practices are normally looked at in relation to a particular culture; this focus
excludes community input and effect on the expectations and behaviors of parents. For this reason, the
focus of this paper will be the effect of community, not culture, on parenting practices. The
community can become the standard reference for a parent, and practices may be accepted without
question even if they do not match that of the broader society. Variations that exist here in the
Southwest, include Native and non Native parenting practices, Hispanic influences, and socio
economic factors. For Native American families in the Southwest, it is important to also note that their
style of shared living impacts their parenting practices. For instance, children may live with other
family members such as grandparents, and move routinely from family member to family member as
they are growing up. The burden of parenting or raising children in a traditional Native American
family belongs to the

Essay about Civil War Weapons and Atrillery
The Weapons of the American Civil War
The Civil War, also called The War Between the States, was one of the bloodiest wars in American
history. What made the Civil War such a massacre? The Civil War was such a bloodbath because the
technological advances were so far superior to the tactics of the infantry, that the weapons virtually
obliterated the soldiers. Soldiers would form lines known as a battalions. In these battalions, soldiers
would basically march to their deaths. In addition to weapons doing so much damage, fortification on
the battlefield was far more advanced than had ever been before. The Cheveau de frise was the main

Colonel Mosby once remarked . . .the only real use for a sword was to hold a piece of meat over a fire

yet devastating weapons. One of these weapons was the .52 caliber breech loading Billinghurst Requa
battery; it was produced only 50 times. This weapon consisted of 25 rifled barrels side by side that,
when primed, were set off by a lanyard to inflict massive damage over a small range of territory.7 The
Union forces also produced many long range artillery weapons. Unlike the Confederates, who used
Howitzers; the Union Army used mortars. The short squat mortar, as it was called, was originally used
by the Ottoman s in 1453. The mortars operated by the Union were primarily used to hurl shells over
walls or into large concentrations of enemy soldiers. In addition to lobbing bombs over walls, the
mortars were also extremely effective in dismantling naval forces. The mortars could be shot from
miles inland, therefore Confederate naval forces never saw the bombs coming. The mortar weighed
17,120 pounds and could fire a 220 pound bomb 4,325 yards. There were smaller versions of these
mortars (the 300 lb Coehorn mortar with a 5.8 inch bore that hurled an 18 pound shell), but they saw

Social Darwinism Chapter 2 Summary
Chapter 2: Social Darwinism is an article that is trying to explain the reason and thought of why the
European settlers behaved the way they did. The Europeans traveled to South Africa in the 17th and

One main reason that the Roman Empire expanded so much was because of their many good emperors
such as Trajan and his successor Hadrian.
Trajan was emperor of Rome from 98 117 CE and is considered one of the Five Good Emperors of
Rome. One reason Trajan was considered such a good emperor was because he was kind and generous
to the Roman People and Senate. Because of this, Trajan was one of the reasons that Rome could have
so much land and be at the height of their power during his reign. Trajan made sure that the poor were
fed and cared for, and almost everybody in his empire liked him. Aside from his kindness, Trajan was
also recognized for his achievements in war and expanding Rome to its height in 117 AD with 5
million square kilometers. Throughout Trajan s reign, he captured Dacia, or present day Romania, and
the Parthian Empire, or the Persians with his skill in fighting. Following Trajan s death in 117,
Hadrian rose to the throne. Hadrian is considered another one of the five good emperors of Rome,
except Hadrian was different than Trajan in that he unified and consolidated Rome rather than seize

Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to this theory/ conclusion. At a Historically Black College or
University, an individual has the ability to further their education. I decide to attend Virginia Union
University to gain a better understanding of my history, to bond with others within the black
community, and to profit from the HBCU experience. While attending a Virginia Union University, I
am able to further my education while gaining a better understanding of my history. HBCU s emerged
at the conclusion of the Civil War. The constant debate on the importance of educating African
Americans was at its peak. Whether it was industrial or liberal education, former slaves knew that it
was a vital skill to obtain. Although the government passed the Morrill Act in 1862, providing each
state with a facility for higher learning, African Americans were not able to attend these white
facilities. It was

Eveline
Historical background: Irish Social Conditions and Emigration Ireland has endured waves of
emigration, particularly after1848. Many left their native land to seek a better life elsewhere. The Irish
were second class citizens within their own nation; Ireland was a British colony and the Northern
Protestants controlled the economy of the country. Catholic families often faced hardship. Alcoholism
and abuse, as portrayed in Eveline were rampant. As a result, many of the Irish sought to escape James
Joyce represents everyday life of Dublin in the early twentieth century in his collection of short
stories, Dubliners. Dubliners consists of 15 stories and each of them unfolds lives of many different

A bell clangs, and Frank tries to pull her on board, but Eveline clutches an iron railing on shore,
feeling that he will drown her in the seas of the world. She cries out and grasps the railing tighter
while Frank calls to her, and she turns her helpless face to him without a glimpse of love or farewell or
recognition, staying on shore as the boat pulls away. Characters Frank 2 Frank is a sailor planning to
move to Buenos Aires and take his lover Eveline with him. He has told Eveline he intends to marry
her, which may well be the case, but Frank is a mysterious character and there is some implication that
his intentions are devious. He started his sailing career on a trade route associated with exile and full
of stories about infamously savage tribes from Argentina. Also, going to Buenos Aires was a slang
term for prostitution, and the night boat to Liverpool may have been a reference to the mythological
journey over the Styx river to the pagan underworld both of which are implications that Frank might
have no intention of marrying his lover, but instead is planning bring her into a situation she will find
immoral. However, Frank is also described as kind, manly, open hearted and is set up as Eveline s
only way to happiness, so he may indeed have only the best intentions in helping his lover to escape
from her abusive household and difficult job. In fact, the

Shakespeare Hardship
About 150 years after his death, questions arose about the authorship of William Shakespeare s plays.
Scholars and literary critics began to float names like Christopher Marlowe, Edward de Vere and
Francis Bacon men of more known backgrounds, literary accreditation, or inspiration as the true
authors of the plays. Much of this stemmed from the sketchy details of Shakespeare s life and the
dearth of contemporary primary sources. Official records from the Holy Trinity Church and the
Stratford government record the existence of a William Shakespeare, but none of these attest to him
being an actor or playwright.
Skeptics also questioned how anyone of such modest education could write with the intellectual
perceptiveness and poetic power that is displayed in Shakespeare s works. Over the centuries, several
groups have emerged that question the authorship of Shakespeare s plays.
The most serious and intense skepticism began in the 19th century when adoration for Shakespeare
was at its highest. The detractors believed that the only hard evidence surrounding William
Shakespeare from Stratford upon Avon described a man from modest ... Show more content on

But his reputation as a dramatic genius wasn t recognized until the 19th century. Beginning with the
Romantic period of the early 1800s and continuing through the Victorian period, acclaim and
reverence for William Shakespeare and his work reached its height. In the 20th century, new
movements in scholarship and performance have rediscovered and adopted his works.
Today, his plays are highly popular and constantly studied and reinterpreted in performances with
diverse cultural and political contexts. The genius of Shakespeare s characters and plots are that they

The Pros And Cons Of Banned Books
In 1982, First Amendment Rights activist Judith King began Banned Books Week in order to bring
banned books to the attention of the American public (Revolvy, 2017, ¶2). A banned book is a piece of
literature that was banned from schools or libraries due to its controversial content. Some of these
controversial topics include racism (seen in Huckleberry Finn), damaging lifestyles (such as drug use,
co habitation without marriage, etc), or presence of witchcraft (seen in Harry Potter). The books with
this content have been banned in order to prevent controversies in the classroom and stop students
from forming their own opinions that could be different from that of their peers. However, controversy
is a very important potential learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 drove out all non Catholics in Spain in an attempt to
purify the Spaniards. A modern day example of religious intolerance is in the Middle East. Blasphemy
laws are an example of religious discrimination, as blasphemy in this context is essentially the practice
of any religion other than Islam. According to Huffington Post, These laws... often carry with them a
mandatory death sentence. Allegations of blasphemy are often presented with no evidence, because to
reproduce the evidence would be to reproduce the blasphemy. This is evidence that practicing a
religion other than Islam in the Middle East comes with a large risk that many are unwilling to take,
which is why Christianity only makes up 4% of the entire Middle East (Ben Mei, 2017, ¶1).
Nevertheless, learning about this type of religious discrimination and about religions in general is an
important aspect of a student s life. By learning about other religions from a nonbiased perspective,
students are far less likely to discriminate against religions other than their own and can reduce bias
later on in life. This is perfectly summarized by the Washington Post when it states, The study of
religion from an academic, nondevotional perspective in primary, middle, and secondary school is
critical for decreasing

Symbolism In Desiree s Baby, By Kate Chopin
The mystery of the unknown appears in Gothic Literature almost everywhere, but while leaving the
reader guessing, hints are included to guide an inference. In Kate Chopin s Desiree s Baby she
explores the ideas of racism and the idea that women are under men and are the cause of all problems,
she also includes symbolism to portray a deeper meaning which is present in her other works.
Although it is not blatantly said in the story, it can be inferred that Desiree killed herself and her baby
near the end of the story. There is a sense of uncertainty yet prominent foreshadowing that this was
going to happen once Desiree has the realization that her baby is not fully white, and becoming
dejected. This is inferred by the inclusion of quotes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This symbol has been used in many stories including Kate Chopin s The Awakening where she uses
water as a symbol of finding freedom and being awoken. Water as a symbol has a deeper meaning of
finding oneself and being free. It is not just water, it guides characters and inspires them to either
make a change or it sets them free from their worries. Being that Desiree was troubled by the new
weight put upon her by the assumption of her husband, she feels as if she cannot live being so
unhappy. The Bayou which is an area of water being semi swamp like can be seen as a place of
freedom for Desiree. Since she chose not to take the road to her mothers and instead took the less
traveled path, it can be inferred that she wanted to be set free and thought she would never be free
even after she left her husband s plantation. This plays into leading the reader to infer that Desiree has
killed herself and her child. Kate Chopin also expresses the symbol of clothing by dressing Desiree in
pure white, characterizing her as pure and someone who can do no wrong. The dress of Desiree plays
into the foreshadowing that she is not the one to blame. White is seen as a color of purity. Desiree is
described as wearing soft white muslins and laces, both playing into purity and femininity (Chopin
329).

  • 2. Cultural Influence Of The Early Medieval Era Exam 2: Cultural Influence One prominent theme that has been encountered throughout this course has been the idea of influence from one culture to another; a cultures influence on another can impact things such as stylistic transition, and transfer of subject matter. The combination of local traditions and newly introduced ideas will allow for new types of artwork to be produced. Artwork during the Early Medieval era, Romanesque era, and Gothic era demonstrates how local and imported ideas intermingle to produce new things. In order to fully express the idea of cultures integrating local ideas with ideas of other cultures to form new artworks, focusing specifically on architecture will allow for the theme to be fully justified. During the dynamic Early Medieval era, which dates back to 500 1000 BCE, European identity was developed and stimulated by Europeans interactions with other cultures in Eurasia and the Mediterranean. During the Early Medieval era early Christian basilicas such as Santa Sabina and San Paolo fuori le Mura (St. Paul s Outside the Walls) maintained the basic structure of the Roman basilica, and incorporated local ideas, which include added Christian elements such as the transept and the ambo. The Romanesque era is the art of Europe from approximately 1000 AD to the rise of the Gothic style in the 13th century. Romanesque architecture retained many basic features of Roman architectural style, which include round headed arches, vaults, apses, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Comparing Ghiberti, Hieronymus Bosch, And Christopher Wren Looking back on the past, art, music, and literature played an important role in society. Compared to today, it still has that same effect. It s inspiring and changing society in many different ways. Art has a power of expressing what we humans can t explain. It brings out a feeling in all of us that s unimaginable and unexplainable. Religion has served as a primary subject matter of art. However, there are many views when it comes to the relationship between humans and God. Three artists from three different time periods explore the comparisons between art and religion. Lorenzo Ghiberti, Hieronymus Bosch, and Christopher Wren have explored the idea that art has influenced religion and that it s meaning is one we cannot fully explain. All three ... When the Great Fire of 1666 occurred, London faced many struggles. Almost 100,000 people were left homeless according to our text and society felt powerless. They had lost faith in life and ultimately God. When the St. Paul s Cathedral was finished, it gave the city hope for a greater world full of many opportunities. The use of certain shapes and simple symmetry resembled true architecture and power. This building fully supports that art had great influence on religion in London. The equation for multiple regression is Y=B1x1 +B2x3 +B4x4 +a, where Y is the dependent variable, b is the coefficient, a is the constant and x is the independent variable. 2) The confidence interval I have applied for all the coefficients is 95%, meaning there is a 5% chance the results fall outside the interval. The education coefficient is between 1.95 and 1.07. The gender coefficient is between 0.07 and 5.21 at a 95% confidence level. The immigrant coefficient is between 4.08 and 1.6 at 95% confidence level, and the religion coefficient is between 12.76 and 6.44 at a 95% confidence level. 3) The confidence interval is one of the parameters that estimates or demonstrates the relationship between the results found in the sample and a characteristic in the population. There is a 95% probability that the education level of the population is between 1.95 and 1.07. Since the null value(0) is not part of the interval, there is statistical significance. The results for gender fall between 0.07 and 5.21, since the confidence interval includes 0, it is not statically significant. The results for immigration fall between 4.08 and 1.6, since the result also includes 0 in the interval, there is no statistical significance. • 7. Total Quality Management Is Defined As A Companywide Essay Total quality management is defined as a companywide effort to continually improve the ways people, machines, and systems accomplish work. Management gurus William Edwards Deming, Joseph Moses Juran, and Philip Bayard Crosby and their philosophies on improving quality and performance excellence lead to frameworks. The U.S. Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the international ISO 9000 certification and the Six Sigma concept are frame works known worldwide. By implementing these frameworks and concepts, companies have improved overall quality from the products and services as well as improving the employees and customers standard of living. When the company goes to implement total quality management, some of its core values are driven in order to improve the quality of the company. Those values are having methods and processes designed to meet the needs of internal and external customers, giving every employee in the organization training in quality, having quality designed into a product or service so that errors are prevented from occurring, rather than being detected and corrected in an error prone product or service, the organization promotes cooperation with vendors, suppliers, and customers to improve quality and hold down cost, and managers measure progress with feedback based on data. The long term dispute over which is better, east coast vs. west coast, will undoubtedly continue until this country no longer exists. While both coasts offer travelers and natives a variety of places to eat, things to do, and places to see, California, North Carolina, and South Carolina want to put their states on the map with their interesting history and ways of living. Due to so much variety on each coast, there is something on each side for everyone. More often than not, people picture California and the Carolinas to be polar opposites. This way of thinking comes from the idea that Hollywood, the city of dreams, consumes California entirely. Consequently, travelers must dig deep to find the hidden gems throughout each state. There will always be more than what meets the eye. There are hundreds of military bases throughout the United States of America. California and the Carolinas contribute to that statistic. In this article, radioactivity will be defined, the three types of radioactivity will be explained, and the different methods of radiation will be illustrated. The alpha particles have an atomic mass of 4 and a charge of +2. When an alpha particle is released from the nucleus, the mass number of the particle decreases by four units and the atomic number decreases by two units. An example of this would be where the helium nucleus is the alpha particle. The energy is a collection of stable nucleons, and those heavier nuclei that can be perceived as collections of alpha particles, such as carbon 12.01 or oxygen 16.00 are also stable. Beta radiation is a stream of electrons that are called beta particles. When the beta particle is released, a neutron is transformed to a proton in the nucleus, thus maintaining the mass number of the nucleus. Although, the atomic number increases by one unit. An example of this occurring is when the electron is the beta particle. Pursuing this further, gamma rays are high energy photons with a very short wavelength of 0.0005 to 0.1 nm. The emission of gamma radiation results from an energy change within the atomic nucleus. Gamma emission changes neither the atomic number nor the atomic mass. Factor V Leiden is a single nucleotide substitution Guanine to Adenine at nucleotide 1691 which is responsible for the single amino acid replacement (Arg506Gln). Factor V Leiden is inactivated by the protein C and S nearly 10 times slower than the normal Factor V, resulting in increased clotting factor that is why it is commonly called APC Resistance. Factor V Leiden is the most common genetic cause of venous thrombosis, which leads to deadly pulmonary embolism when the part of the clot breaks away to the pulmonary artery. It is involved in 20 40% of cases and is present in 3% of the general population. The other major genetic causes of venous thrombosis (deficiencies of protein C and S) together account for only 5 10% of cases. Factor V Leiden increases the risk of venous thrombosis 3 8 times for heterozygous (one bad gene inherited) and substantially more, 30 140 times for homozygous (two bad gene inherited) individuals. 2% of the general population was found to be heterozygous. Risk is increased still further in situations such as pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, estrogen therapy, malignancy, diabetes mellitus, immobilization, surgery, trauma, high blood pressure, obesity, smoking or long time travel (commonly called economy class syndrome). The Pressure to Be Perfect The Bell Jar and Black Swan: The Pressure to be Perfect In a society where competition among others and influences from the media are becoming increasingly prevalent by the decade, it is easy for one to feel the extreme pressure to be perfect. Many individuals face the internal conflict of feeling that they are not adequate enough for various personal or societal standards, often leading to unhealthy insecurities, mental and emotional instabilities, and identity crises. Firstly, society s reminders to individuals to reach a superficial level of perfection create unhealthy stress within oneself, leading to progressive depression. It is the feeling of not being good enough for the world that crushes her self esteem and will to succeed, as later on she begins to contemplate harming her body and even committing suicide. The protagonist in Black Swan, prima ballerina Nina Sayers, faces a similar ignition to her mental instabilities through the pressures of society. In this case, Nina is naturally a perfectionist who tries to strive in the highly competitive ballet industry, which takes a huge toll on her physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is evident that throughout the course of Nina s training for her big debut as Swan Queen in the ballet company s annual production, she is obsessed with the idea of perfection to live up to society s expectations of what a prima ballerina should be. When the former prima ballerina of the company, Beth McIntyre, unexpectedly retires, the director, Thomas Leroy, introduces her to the entire ballet industry at a gala. He announces, But as we bid adieu to one star, we welcome another! We re opening our season with my new version of Swan Lake. Taking the role of our new Swan Queen, the exquisite, Nina Sayers (Aronofsky). What Is The Elite Class In The Masque Of The Red Death David Davis ENGL 313 001 Prof. Shelly Jarenski December 1st, 2017 Edgar Allan Poe s Critique of the Elite Class in The Masque of the Red Death In The Masque of the Red Death by Edgar Allan Poe, the eccentric Prince Prospero and his affluent courtiers bask in the secluded comforts, and presumed safety, of excessive wealth, all while a deadly plague known as The Red Death ravages the peasantry. Although this tale takes place in an unnamed European country, history has proven the universal nature of this dynamic; a dynamic which has been spoken against by many figures in America s [literary] history. For instance, in A Model of Christian Charity, a sermon manual meant to instruct Christians on how to act as good citizens in the New World, John Winthrop a Puritan lawyer highlights the importance of both wealth and poverty in God s plan to maintain balance among his elect: God Almighty in His most holy and wise providence, hath so disposed of the condition of mankind, as in all times some must be rich, some poor, some high and eminent in power and dignity; others mean and in submission. (Winthrop; 166). In Winthrop s eyes, this socio economic dichotomy must exist in order for the divine virtues of communalism, unity, and charity to be upheld. By these standards, Prospero would be an unholy and un American individual, as Poe paints him and those of his class as a consciously oblivious group, whose high status affords them the ability to fiddle while their country is engulfed ... • 24. A Cross-Examination Of Themes In Walden, By Henry David... The Journey from Enslavement to Freedom, from Society to Nature: A Cross Examination of Themes in Thoreau s Walden and Slavery in Massachusetts Working Thesis In Walden, Thoreau explains that to him, slavery is not only as simple as the historically common definition of the physical enslavement of a man or woman to another man. Slavery, in the abstract, is both mental and physical, and society represents a seemingly unavoidable, but somewhat overlooked form of slavery put upon us all. Thoreau hypothesizes and experiments with the journey from enslavement of society to freedom. What characterizes enslavement? Is it mental, physical, or both? How do people go about attaining their freedom? Can we ever achieve it completely? The journey from slavery to freedom is a prominent theme in Thoreau s writings. This essay cross examines these themes in the first chapter of Walden ( Economy ) with a discourse delivered by Thoreau at an anti slavery convention, Slavery in Massachusetts , and argues for an interpretation of Thoreau s concept of the journey from enslavement to freedom: All of society represents enslavement, with everyone being slaves in various degrees and forms, such as physical, mental, forced, voluntary, or self inflicted. For Thoreau, the only paths to freedom are nature and God. TS #1 Slavery is not only physical; it is mental and even emotional with ties to the pressures and demands of everyday life. National Health System ( Nhs ) Essay National Health System (NHS) England (1800words) The National Health System began in 1948 with the aim to provide free health care for the English thus removing health access inequities. This essay considers two strengths of the NHS, being free health and locally responsive health care and two weaknesses being the financial burden and unprecedented pressure on health care resources. One of the strengths of the NHS England is residents receive free fully funded medical care that includes all medical treatment, screenings including antenatal, dental, prescriptions, specialist referrals and optometrists (NHS England, 2016). Furthermore, while being free at point of access, the NHS system is an efficient, effective, care, safe, coordinated and patient centred system that was ranked number two worldwide on equity (NHS England, 2016). Free healthcare supports Ham s (2010) claim that being free at point of entry is a characteristic of a high performing health care system. The benefits of free healthcare were that everyone was able to get the same medical treatment. The delivery of health care through Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG s) is another strength. CCG s were created in 2012 following the passing of the Health and Social Care Act, to replace primary care trusts in 2013(NHS England, 2013). Their strength lies in their authority and purpose to provide health care that is responsive to a geographical area and set patient number. They are clinically led, often by local ... As the population shifted from rural areas to urban centers, families lived in smaller homes with less room to care for sick family members (Faulkner 1960, p. 509). Increasing requirements for licensing and accreditation, in addition to a rising demand for medical care, eventually led to rising costs. The Effects Of Community On Parenting Practices Running head: EFFECTS OF COMMUNITY ON PARENTING Sanchez | 2 The Effects of Community on Parenting Practices Christina Sanchez November 6th 2016 The definition of a community can vary by its culture and experiences. It is those differences that are the framework for what any given community regards as normal and appropriate when it pertains to parenting practices. These norms set the standards as to when and how parents should seek help from others as well. Parenting practices are normally looked at in relation to a particular culture; this focus excludes community input and effect on the expectations and behaviors of parents. For this reason, the focus of this paper will be the effect of community, not culture, on parenting practices. The community can become the standard reference for a parent, and practices may be accepted without question even if they do not match that of the broader society. Variations that exist here in the Southwest, include Native and non Native parenting practices, Hispanic influences, and socio economic factors. For Native American families in the Southwest, it is important to also note that their style of shared living impacts their parenting practices. The point that Chopin was trying to get across was that Calixta and Alcee had a strong passion for one another, and perhaps loved each other, but they could never have been married because of their social differences. It is a passionate, but brief affair between two married people from different social classes that takes place during a cyclone in Louisiana around 1898. The story symbolizes the freedom that a woman felt inside after the rain during a time when women had no freedom. (Firtha lesson 2 page 1) Calixta and Alcee had a strong passion for each other. (Chopin807) Chopin goes on to say; The generous abundance of her passion, without guile or trickery, was like a white flame which penetrated and found response in depths of his own sensuous nature that had never yet had been reached. (807) She stated that text because Calixta had never felt that way with her own husband. Also, Chopin refers to her mouth being a fountain of delight. (807) She adds, And when he possessed her, they seemed swoon together at the very borderline of life s mystery. (807)This must have been when they reached their climax. • 40. Contemporary Australian Society Of The 1940 S Australian... Contemporary Australian society. A society that currently appears predicated on an economy and lifestyle that no longer exists the 1940 s Australian Dream . We are all aware of the facts that materiality is unsustainable; that consumption is overwhelming; that economic gain is all pervasive. Yet we favour ignorance. Time has caught up with us and the self interested ideals that once held our society together are no longer durable. This has produced a gap, but nothing palpable to replace it with. Hence individuals like you and I must resort to other avenues of fulfilment. We open our land to refugees; we open our hearts to each passing generation, each aging population, each child that learns to be a citizen, a patriot. This empathy ... This philosophy postulates not only that selfishness exists but also that it motivates all our actions fundamentally, that personal interest is the only reason we help other people. While this seems a problematic conclusion reflecting a reductive vision of human motivations, to quote the philosopher Joel Feinberg, Empirical evidence of the required sort is seldom presented in support of psychological egoism. Further, the theory is in principle un falsifiable and non scientific; it is an ideology. On October 9th 2013, a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience by the Max Planck Institute for Human and Cognitive Brain Sciences revealed neurobiological roots of how our own sentiments can distort empathic capacity.4 An incredible part of the brain, the right supramarginal gyrus, has been attributed with the ability to recognise a lack of empathy and autocorrect. Studies have revealed our brain s neural circuitry is malleable and potentially rewired through neuroplasticity. Hence our personal tendency for empathy and compassion can be labeled innate , but never fixed. In recent years, these same researchers have found compassion may be trained through short, daily exposure: meditation, volunteerism, mindfulness training and physical activity that puts the human body through challenging experiences, are among these findings. While the research may seem overwhelming, consider the findings in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. The Black Colleges And Universities Essay Double consciousness describes the individual sensation of feeling as though your identity is divided into several parts, making it impossible to have one unified identity (Understanding W.E.B DuBois, n.d.). This proposal was brought forth by W.E.B Bois. He believed that African American s were struggling with these repressed feelings of not knowing who they are; they could not combine their African background with their now developed American identity. This concept was developed in 1903, but is still very relevant today; one may be able to relate the relevance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) to this theory/ conclusion. At a Historically Black College or University, an individual has the ability to further their education. I decide to attend Virginia Union University to gain a better understanding of my history, to bond with others within the black community, and to profit from the HBCU experience. While attending a Virginia Union University, I am able to further my education while gaining a better understanding of my history. HBCU s emerged at the conclusion of the Civil War. The constant debate on the importance of educating African Americans was at its peak. Whether it was industrial or liberal education, former slaves knew that it was a vital skill to obtain. Although the government passed the Morrill Act in 1862, providing each state with a facility for higher learning, African Americans were not able to attend these white facilities. It was ... Characters Frank 2 Frank is a sailor planning to move to Buenos Aires and take his lover Eveline with him. He has told Eveline he intends to marry her, which may well be the case, but Frank is a mysterious character and there is some implication that his intentions are devious. He started his sailing career on a trade route associated with exile and full of stories about infamously savage tribes from Argentina. Also, going to Buenos Aires was a slang term for prostitution, and the night boat to Liverpool may have been a reference to the mythological journey over the Styx river to the pagan underworld both of which are implications that Frank might have no intention of marrying his lover, but instead is planning bring her into a situation she will find immoral. • 43. Shakespeare Hardship About 150 years after his death, questions arose about the authorship of William Shakespeare s plays. Scholars and literary critics began to float names like Christopher Marlowe, Edward de Vere and Francis Bacon men of more known backgrounds, literary accreditation, or inspiration as the true authors of the plays. Much of this stemmed from the sketchy details of Shakespeare s life and the dearth of contemporary primary sources. Official records from the Holy Trinity Church and the Stratford government record the existence of a William Shakespeare, but none of these attest to him being an actor or playwright. Skeptics also questioned how anyone of such modest education could write with the intellectual perceptiveness and poetic power that is displayed in Shakespeare s works. Over the centuries, several groups have emerged that question the authorship of Shakespeare s plays. The most serious and intense skepticism began in the 19th century when adoration for Shakespeare was at its highest. The Pros And Cons Of Banned Books In 1982, First Amendment Rights activist Judith King began Banned Books Week in order to bring banned books to the attention of the American public (Revolvy, 2017, ¶2). A banned book is a piece of literature that was banned from schools or libraries due to its controversial content. Some of these controversial topics include racism (seen in Huckleberry Finn), damaging lifestyles (such as drug use, co habitation without marriage, etc), or presence of witchcraft (seen in Harry Potter). For example, the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 drove out all non Catholics in Spain in an attempt to purify the Spaniards. A modern day example of religious intolerance is in the Middle East. Blasphemy laws are an example of religious discrimination, as blasphemy in this context is essentially the practice of any religion other than Islam. According to Huffington Post, These laws... often carry with them a mandatory death sentence. Allegations of blasphemy are often presented with no evidence, because to reproduce the evidence would be to reproduce the blasphemy. This is evidence that practicing a religion other than Islam in the Middle East comes with a large risk that many are unwilling to take, which is why Christianity only makes up 4% of the entire Middle East (Ben Mei, 2017, ¶1). Nevertheless, learning about this type of religious discrimination and about religions in general is an important aspect of a student s life. By learning about other religions from a nonbiased perspective, students are far less likely to discriminate against religions other than their own and can reduce bias later on in life. This is perfectly summarized by the Washington Post when it states, The study of religion from an academic, nondevotional perspective in primary, middle, and secondary school is critical for decreasing ... • 45. Symbolism In Desiree s Baby, By Kate Chopin The mystery of the unknown appears in Gothic Literature almost everywhere, but while leaving the reader guessing, hints are included to guide an inference. In Kate Chopin s Desiree s Baby she explores the ideas of racism and the idea that women are under men and are the cause of all problems, she also includes symbolism to portray a deeper meaning which is present in her other works. Although it is not blatantly said in the story, it can be inferred that Desiree killed herself and her baby near the end of the story. There is a sense of uncertainty yet prominent foreshadowing that this was going to happen once Desiree has the realization that her baby is not fully white, and becoming dejected. This is inferred by the inclusion of quotes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This symbol has been used in many stories including Kate Chopin s The Awakening where she uses water as a symbol of finding freedom and being awoken. Water as a symbol has a deeper meaning of finding oneself and being free. It is not just water, it guides characters and inspires them to either make a change or it sets them free from their worries. Being that Desiree was troubled by the new weight put upon her by the assumption of her husband, she feels as if she cannot live being so unhappy. The Bayou which is an area of water being semi swamp like can be seen as a place of freedom for Desiree. Since she chose not to take the road to her mothers and instead took the less traveled path, it can be inferred that she wanted to be set free and thought she would never be free even after she left her husband s plantation. This plays into leading the reader to infer that Desiree has killed herself and her child. Kate Chopin also expresses the symbol of clothing by dressing Desiree in pure white, characterizing her as pure and someone who can do no wrong. The dress of Desiree plays into the foreshadowing that she is not the one to blame. White is seen as a color of purity. Desiree is described as wearing soft white muslins and laces, both playing into purity and femininity (Chopin 329). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
