In 1986, reactor number four at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine exploded, releasing radioactive fallout across Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and beyond. The explosion was one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. An exclusion zone remains around the plant due to high radiation levels. In the aftermath, 28 emergency workers died from acute radiation syndrome and nearby residents faced increased cancer risks while wildlife and agriculture were severely impacted by radiation poisoning. The abandoned city of Chernobyl remains largely uninhabited due to the ongoing effects of the nuclear disaster.
