On April 26, 1986, there was a nuclear reactor accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, resulting in an explosion of the No. 4 reactor. This was the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history, with at least 56 direct deaths and over 600,000 people exposed to radiation. The accident occurred during a safety test where operators had disabled safety mechanisms, allowing power levels to drop too low. Over 30 years later, the site remains highly radioactive with 200 tons of material still needing containment.
