Edward Gordon Craig Uber Marionettes
Edward Gordon Craig, a prominent English set designer and theorist from 1900, designed sets and
created modernist theories which greatly influenced modern theatre. Regarded as one of his most
controversial essays on theatrical discourse, The Actor and the Über marionette rendered Edward
Gordon Craig s critique on modern theatre. Although he appreciates actors and their work to a certain
degree, Craig advocates for the complete removal of actors from theatre and warns actors of their
misconceptions of acting as art form, providing the guidelines on what it means to be an artist in his
eyes. Denouncing actors entirely for their emotional and human weaknesses, Craig hopes to turn to a
developing alternative at the time as their replacements, large scale puppets uber marionettes whose
purposeful movements, controlled emotional state, and crafted image work together to create a
deliberate impassioned performance. Despite sharing similarities with Craig s uber marionettes and
embodying some aspects of his philosophy, the Muppets ultimately differ in the respect that they
retain and emphasize a human element from humans acting with and through a puppet.
As mentioned above, Craig holds the notion that these puppets or uber marionettes will bring about a
revival in modern theatre. This revival has to do with the reforming of the governing laws of theatre
and acting as an art. In his essay, Craig interprets art as the desired expression of an artist s thoughts,
emotions,

Native American Themes In Louise Erdrich s Antelope Wife
Louise Erdrich is a Native American author from Little Falls, Minnesota. Her mother is a Chippewa
Indian and her father is German American. Through her writing, she demonstrates native ideas and
culture. Native American themes are often present in her works. She shines a light on both
perspectives of her background. Some of her works mention reservations in Minnesota and North
Dakota which connects to her birthplace and where she grew up. Erdrich did not really look into her
native heritage until she went to Dartmouth and they had just opened the Native American department.
She delved more into the subject and started to use it in her writing. Erdrich gives readers, whether or
not they are Native American or not, a look at Native American culture from the eyes of both natives
and others in society. This theme is present in many of her works including: Antelope Wife and Future
Home of a Living God. Antelope Wife is a short story by Louise Erdrich. Antelope Wife is about a
Native American man belonging to the Chippewa tribe in Minnesota who is a teacher. One day he laid
his eyes on four women: three daughters and their mother. He was determined to have the mother and
he ends up kidnapping her. He gets her (the antelope) to fall in love with her, but he was warned by
Jimmy Badger that these women are generally curse the men who go after them. Towards the end of
the story, she becomes overweight and ugly and the man did not expect this to happen to him. There is
already a connection to native culture in the title of this short story, Antelope . Antelope is a spirit
animal in the native heritage. Antelope symbolizes being on the movie and action oriented. Deep in
the fields of tall golden grasses in the desert the Antelope thrives, ever watchful and discerning ready
to move in an instant. The Antelope perceives subtle body movements and signals from the other
members of the herd. When danger is near they move as one, quickly and confidently with finesse and
confidence, their maneuverability allows them to disappear into the vast expanse of wilderness with
no more than a moments notice. (Universe of Symbolism, Antelope). This symbolism is referred to
towards the end of the poem by Jimmy Badger. If you see one

Congenital Cataracts Cause Blindness Around The World
Congenital Cataract is one of the leading preventable diseases that causes blindness around the world,
being one of the easiest diseases to treat, the major complication being that some countries do not
have the sufficient resources to treat it. The disease is formed in the eye and forms a sort of cloud in
the natural lens of the eye that could eventually lead to blindness if not treated properly. This type of
cataract is different from most cataracts, since congenital cataracts is present in an individual since
birth, meaning that it was most likely inherited from the parents. The way that it is inherited is by
some sort of abnormality, which would transpire during the making of the proteins that make the lens
clear. There are many different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The study done by these researchers proved that timely surgery can be beneficial to the vision of
individuals who suffer from congenital cataracts. They analyzed results from the aftermath of eye
surgery there was a small improvement to most of the individuals vision. There were various
individuals whose vision was not corrected and in fact was worsened. The children at the time were
around 11 years old, so it was concluded that some of the children had had the disease for too long for
it to be corrected. This underlines the significance of discovering and treating congenital cataracts at a
young age, preferably as an infant. Most developing countries are still aiming to improve their health
care and avoiding the consequences of congenital cataracts, yet they are in trouble with nearly 30% of
health professions in Africa and Asia plan to migrate to a different country (Lenhart, 2016). In Lenhart
s research article, he concludes that most troubles these developing countries have roots from financial
struggles. These financial struggles lead to poor resources within the countries. These developing
countries do not even have the machinery to detect eye diseases in children, such as the red reflex
screening. Without these tests, infants are left with a preventable disease

Survival in Auschwitz
Levi, Primo. Survival in Auschwitz; The Nazi Assault on Humanity. 1st edition. New York: Simon and
Schuster, 1996. I. Survival in Auschwitz is the unique autobiographical account of how a young man
endured the atrocities of a Nazi death camp and lived to tell the tale. Primo Levi, a 24 year old Jewish
chemist from Turin Italy, was captured by the fascist militia in December 1943 and deported to Camp
Buna Monowitz in Auschwitz. The trip by train took 4 long days in a jam packed boxcar without food
or water. Once there, interrogations by the SS of age and health determined life as a prisoner or
untimely death. Levi along with hundreds of fellow Jews were stripped of their clothes, given rags to
wear, had their heads shaved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During Levi s captivity, the Killing Machines had already been tested and were being refined with
each use. Levi describes how selections could be made at any time, anywhere. From the hut in the
early or late hours, during roll call, on the march to work, and especially in the infirmary. In the last
chapter when the Germans were evacuating the camp with the healthy prisoners it was not stated
where they were going. It is my impression they were headed for the Killing Machines. The
appeasement of what the Nazi s were doing by other countries was not in the minds of Levi and his
comrades. Survival was of the utmost importance. What was going on in the outside world was of no
significance. Live to see tomorrow was the ultimate goal. The theme of Isolationism was seen
throughout Survival in Auschwitz. Germany was isolated from the rest of the world and Levi was
isolated from his family, friends and country. Within the camp, each hut was separated from one
another and those confined to the infirmary were secluded from the rest. The prisoners themselves
both consciously and unconsciously practiced self isolationism as

The War Of The Vietnam War Essay
Vietnam s independence has come with much struggle, firstly with France s determination to regain
the empire they had ruled for over half a century and then later with America. Because of the length
and the immensely confusing nature of the Vietnam War it is impossible to reflect on America s
oppression towards Vietnam without looking at the first Indochina War, where the Vietnamese fought
against the domination of the French imperialism. Edward Lansdale, a former United States air force
officer once stated it is like a spectator arriving in the middle of a complex drama, without true
knowledge of the plot or of the identity and motivation of those in the drama. By the time the
American s committed to a ground war in Vietnam, many were describing the war against France not
only as a fight against colonialism but also as the beginning of the struggle against American
imperialism. Both America and France assumed that the Vietnamese were unfit to govern themselves
and neither would consider Vietnam gaining independence. The war period in Vietnam has a death toll
so high it still remains contested, making war Vietnam s predicament for well over forty years with no
other country suffering as many casualties of war since World War II.
France, a late comer to the European scramble for economic and political dominance in Asia,
developed an ideology to justify their imperial domination called the civilising mission or better
known as the white man s burden claiming it was

Happiness and Moral Value
Happiness and Moral Virtue In Aristotle s Nicomachaen Ethics, the principle concern is the nature of
human well being. According to Aristotle, everything we do in life, we do for the sake of some good,
or at least something perceived to be good (1094a1 3). When inquiring as to whether there is some
good desired for its own sake, Aristotle envisioned a problem that either there is an infinite series of
goods desired for the sake of something higher, in which case one s desires can never be satisfied, or
there must be some highest good that is desired for its own sake and for which everything else is
desired (1094a17 22). Then, according to Aristotle, the highest good must be final, it must be desired
for its own sake and not for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This restricted audience can limit the perception of happiness, and the use of this knowledge. Those
who have serious doubts about the value of such virtuous qualities may not be convinced to adopt
them. One argument against Aristotle s view of virtue as a mean state between the extremes of excess
and deficiency would be social/moderate drinking of alcoholic beverages. Studies have shown that
drinking only two alcoholic beverages a day can lead to alcoholism, although, one could define this
behavior as acting in moderation, as one is not drinking to become intoxicated. As the alcoholism
develops one may display acts of rage, violence and theft as a result of the condition. Thus, through
use of moderation one displays character against moral virtue, and ultimately does not show
happiness. The only way to abolish such acts is to completely relinquish alcohol, exhibiting
deficiency. Through deficiency one would return to the state of character before the moderate use of
alcohol, whether virtuous or not. Aristotle also claims that justice and happiness is what is good for the
state, i.e. society, although society does not always act in accordance with moderation. During the
flourishing Roman society, citizens would consume food in a gluttonous matter, and vomit to consume
more. Though, from literature the individual citizens were conceived to be happy. Aristotle s sort of

Mexican Dictator Porfirio Diaz
From 1877 to 1910, Mexico was under the iron rule of one man, Gen. Porfirio Diaz. Gen. Diaz had
brought order to Mexico. He expropriated Church lands, opened Mexico to foreign investment, and
encouraged the development of commercial agriculture and the building of railways and industry. In
many ways, the Porfiriato brought prosperity to Mexico. But this prosperity was not equally shared.
The Diaz regime worked with the hacendados, powerful, semi feudal landowners, to seize land held
communally by Native Americans, to add to their estates. Just 3% of the population owned 95% of
arable or grazing land in Mexico. Too many rural Mexicans were penniless sharecroppers, trapped in

oil, mining, and the railroads. Taft had limited experience in foreign policy and made little effort to
understand his neighbors to the South. His idea of diplomacy was what his administration called dollar
diplomacy (based on the economic benefits the U.S. could gain). Early on in his presidency, Mexican
dictator Porfirio Díaz had sold most of Mexico s resources, especially those below the soil, such as
copper and oil, off to the highest bidders often to the U.S. U.S. ownership of these resources were
investments worth protecting. But in 1910, revolution was in the air, and President Taft was concerned
with the coming changes in Mexico. In 1911, Francisco I. Madero and his followers overthrew the
Díaz regime, which had held power for almost forty years. Henry Lane Wilson became Taft s eyes and

Madero himself came from the upper class, and he was not about to upset the delicate economic

Essay On How To Protect Us From Ourselves
How To Protect Us From Ourselves
The United States of America is an amazing country, mostly known for the rights that we are given at
birth; however, the United States, a wealthy nation, remains a county that does not provide universal
healthcare to its citizens thus, millions of Americans remain uninsured. Making this a major issue that
needs to be addressed. The one country that prides itself over its outstanding healthcare system is
Canada. According to the 2000 World Health Organization s ratings, Canada is ranked at 30th and the
U.S. 37th among 191 nations who participated in the study. Additionally, Canadians have a life
expectancy of 80 opposed to Americans who have a 78 years. Dr. Krell reports the disparity of life ...

things such as the ambulance (if they had called one), the doctor for seeing you, treatment,

the hospital it is likely that the medically uninsured individual will not continue with his medical
regimen. A recent study had shown that 62% of bankruptcies are caused from high medical bills.
Meaning that our healthcare is expensive thus, not everyone can afford coverage. Since Canada has a
higher life expectancy than America it is thought that Canada s healthcare plan is better. Dr. Krell
reports the disparity of life expectancy may be due to good healthcare. This study helps us come to a
conclusion how healthcare can play a big factor in life expectancy. A study in April 18 Annals of
Internal Medicine compares the survival rate of patients with cystic fibrosis in the U.S. and Canada.
Their results concluded that the patients in Canada had a 10 year higher survival rate as opposed to the
U.S. patients. It is speculated that the lack of healthcare coverage or insurance status in the U.S.
attributed to the results. However, the study also showed if a U.S. patient who has private insurance

My Experience At Panera Bread
Life teaches us lessons every day. Sometimes when we are in the midsts of frustration or confusion we
never see clearly or understand the lesson from the situations we are put in. It is only through
moments of reflection when a person can begin to see how certain situations have shaped their way of
thinking or doing things. For a little over half a year, I worked a part time job during my senior year of
high school at Panera Bread. During my time there i was able to observe and see all kinds of different
family dynamics and people walk through the door every day. It was strange, it was different, and it
was amazing all at the same time to see all of those different walks of life. A favorite memory of mine
there that I will never forget occurred on Super Bowl Sunday night. Looking back on my experience
from that frustrating night, I find that i learned the value of teamwork, work relationships, and I
learned how the most unpleasant situations can turn into great unexpected surprises. To start at the
very beginning, I have always had this certain manager that i could never really get along with
workwise. Her name was Melissa and she was a corporate trained manager, making her more official
and strict then the other managers and always going by the books . She was a short, long grey haired
women that always wore these glasses that made her look like an old scary librarian. She had the

Evolving Federalism Essay
Evolving Federalism
Pre Class Assignment
Federalism by definition is the division of power between a central government and its participating
members. How that power is divided is the subjective aspect of federalism that was before the framers
of the United States. Through compromise and necessity the seeds for a strong central government
were planted alongside already strong state governments. Over time the seeds for strong central
government grew; wars, economic fluctuations and national growth established a strong central
government. As America s idea of federalism changed the central government grew more powerful,
the state s government gave more power away, and local governments were established. ... Show more

Schreiber s fifth and final stage is the post World War II era. Here, creative federalism is born.
Creative federalism points to a strong centralized government that initiates federal programs to fight
poverty, hunger, crime, and other social issues. This stage sees a noticeable increase of power given to
the national government by the Warren Court.
Schreiber concludes by describing a struggle between cooperative federalism and creative federalism.
He sees these two models of federalism in competition with one another on how power will be
distributed between the three levels of government. This is best described by Russell Hanson, in
Governing Partners, as competitive federalism , which is the idea that the three levels of government
must compete for power in a zero sum game.
It can be argued that we now are in a sixth stage that can be defined as competitive federalism. Recent
struggles involving gay marriage, education, tax reform, and anti terrorism funding prove that a
struggle for power between the three levels of government is ongoing.
The issue of education best exemplifies the changing nature of intergovernmental relations. State and
local governments run their own school systems, and for the most part, fund them as well. States differ

Martin Luther Splintering Of Religion
Divine grace was a particularly prominent concern in sixteenth century Europe, it prompted the
splintering of Christendom and was therefore responsible in large part for the subsequent violence.
With the extensive conflict motivated by debates over the delivery of divine grace, it comes as no
surprise that leading figures of the era harbored vastly differing opinions on the subject. Martin
Luther, John Fisher, and Hans Staden, drawing from the exact same source material, came to
drastically different conclusions regarding the bestowment, acceptance, and discovery of divine grace.
Martin Luther s personal interpretation of divine grace differed so greatly from that of other christians
that it facilitated the splintering of a religion. Luther s influential interpretation was formed on the
basis of two claims made by St. Paul in his Letter to the Romans. First, a justified Christian lives by
faith alone, and second Christ is the end and the fulfillment of all commandments for those who
believe in Him, (Luther 22). Luther interpreted St. Paul s words to mean that divine grace is bestowed
through faith, that Faith... will abundantly justify those who have it, such that they require nothing
more to be righteous and pious, (Luther 22). The idea of being saved through nothing but faith
resonated with Luther, a man obsessed with his own repentance, to the point that he visited confession
several times daily (Smith). The inherent nature of faith, as Luther viewed it, was quite

To Kill A Mockingbird Is To Destroy The Innocent Analysis
Thus, to kill a mockingbird is to destroy the innocent. When looking for the rationale for why killing a
mockingbird is atrocious you will find this. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a
story of a small town, Maycomb. In this old town there is racism and rude people yet, there are also
kind people like Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Scout Finch have something in common they are all
innocent yet treated very poorly. The boo shows how hurting the innocent is not fair and not right.
First, there is Boo Radley, he is comparable to a Mockingbird for copious reasons. Ever since he was a
teenager he has been locked up inside his house and has never come out. He has never hurt anyone nor
wanted to hurt anyone. Sadly, many people in the town (even adults) spread rumors and lies about him
that make him seem very mean even though he is innocent. For example, the Finch s neighbors tell
Scout, Jem, and Dill that Boo Radley hurts people and is crazy. People all around their town say this
stuff too even though they don t know if it is true or not. Lastly, people judge him and don t treat him
like others for reasons that are not true. Most people are, Scout when you finally see them. (Lee,323).
This quote shows how most people actually could be nice when you finally get to meet them and not
assume things about them like the town does to Boo Radley often during the book. Second, there is
the very innocent Tom Robinson. He is alike to a Mockingbird in many ways. First

The Call and Engaging God’s World by Cornelius Plantinga...
After reading the books The Call and Engaging God s World I have learned a lot of information that
will be bringing me closer to God and his work and commitment to us, his followers here on earth.
The books were very informative and educational to a person gaining information on becoming a
Christian as well adding information to an existing Christian in faith. The books have many passages
that touch your heart and really make you think about your actions and words we have towards others
in today s times we live in. I feel there are many things we can learn in these books that were assigned
in this semesters books. It was a lot of work to read these books as well as maintain four classes, but I
am grateful for the opportunity to have been asked to read the books and gain the information I did
from doing so.
In the book The Call it states a number of questions people often ask themselves such as who am I?
Where do I belong? These are a few questions everyone has probably asked themselves once in their
lifetimes and to be honest it all reflects back to their relationship with God. If we have a good strong
relationship with God then can be secure in our decisions and relationships we pose throughout of
lives. As long as we have God there is no need to worry because he has a plan for us and knows what
is best for us and our lives at the current time.
Page thirteen states God alone needs nothing outside himself, because he himself is the highest and the
only lasting good.

Actuaries and the Auditing Process
ACTUARIES AND THE AUDITING PROCESS
Risk is an inevitable element of any type of business with the insurance sector being no exception.
Insurance companies accept various forms of risk each which can affect the ability of a company to
meet its future liabilities.
These risks need to be identified, analysed, and managed/mitigated as far as possible. These
procedures and controls will form part of a company s risk management framework (Chen, 2010).
The aim of an audit is to determine, by investigation and evaluation of unbiased evidence, whether the
adequacy and implementation of established procedures comply with regulatory requirements,
industry standards and company policy (Stamatis, 2002).
One of the main goals of an actuarial audit is to monitor and assess the quality of work done by an
insurance company s internal actuaries and to decide if the concerned financial statements present a
true and fair view of the company s current financial position (International Association of Insurance
Supervisors, 2009).
Definition and Broad Overview
Research was centered on the relationship between Regent Insurance, as the insurer, and Deloitte, as
the independent external audit support group. The auditing actuaries are those which, in conjunction
with external auditors, form the external audit support group (Strydom, 2014).

Napoleon Bonaparte The Ruthless Conqueror
Napoleon Bonaparte: The Ruthless Conqueror
Napoleon Bonaparte was one of the most successful and controversial military leaders of all time.
Leading France from the years 1799 to 1815, he would establish the French empire, a superpower that
was very similar to that of the Romans. In only sixteen years, Bonaparte came close to conquering all
of Europe, but paid a steep price for his triumph. During his reign, Napoleon Bonaparte An exhibit for

These wars, while trying to establish the French Empire, would significantly weaken France. During
his reign, Bonaparte s main goal was to conquer all of Europe. In order to do so, he recognized that he
needed to defeat France s main threat, Great Britain. In order to weaken them, Bonaparte created the
Continental system. The Continental system was a set of blockades that was designed to cut the
British off from trade with the rest of Europe... (but,) by 1812, it was clear that the Continental system
was not working. (Source E) Underestimating the power of Great Britain s superior navy, Bonaparte
did not realize that the British would able to make their own blockades around France. Napoleon
Bonaparte would blame Russia for his failure, and invade the vast country. This would be the biggest
failure of his career. In an attempt to defeat his new enemy, Bonaparte would march 600,000 thousand
troops into Russia. Even as the weather conditions worsened, Bonaparte decided to always push
further into Russia, trying to conquer Moscow before winter, (Source E) which he knew would cost
him more lives. Eventually losing about 500,000 of these men, he return to France with the remains of
an army. This means that Bonaparte did not consider what the cost of these wars could be. This is
significant, as this is a decision that no enlightened monarch would make. Instead of actually thinking

Although in some degree, the quote above is true but the big brother [government] did not state the

Essay on The Causes and Effects of World War I
The Causes and Effects of World War I In 1914 through 1918, the entire world was at war. Due to
many small, and some great incidents, the world powers went to war. During the war there were many
events that drastically affected the outcome. Some of these events were very influential. From the
assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand to the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, the war was shaped by
events like this. On June 28, 1914, the Archduke of Austria Hungary, Francis Ferdinand, and his wife
entered their car. About five minutes later a blast rang out. A bomb had been throw in front of his car.
A Serbian nationalist and member of the Black Hand, Gavrilo Princip, ran up to the car and, with two

On February 21, 1916, the Germans launched a major offensive under the command of Prince
Frederick William against Verdun. The Battle of Verdun had begun. The French soon lost Douaumont
and Hardaumont but were able to eventually stop the German advance. In July the British launched an
offensive on Somme which made the Battle at Verdun a little easier. By December the French had
taken most of the land they lost. The Battle of Verdun was the longest and one of the bloodiest battles
of the war. The Germans soon realized they couldn t kill enough French to win the war. They found
themselves losing as many men as the French. Over two million soldiers from both sides took part in
the battle. A combination of about 675,000 men from both sides lost their lives; 348,000 French and
328,000 Germans. On January 16, 1917, the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmermann, sent a
telegram to Johann von Bernstorff, the German ambassador to the U.S. The telegram said that if the
U.S. did decide to enter the war, Mexico should be asked to join as an ally to Germany. In return,
Germany would help Mexico regain Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The British intercepted and
deciphered the message. They gave it to the U.S. government. On March 1, President Wilson released
the telegram to the press. A month later on April 6, the United States declared war on Germany and
officially entered the war. The U.S. gave the Allies much

The Contribution Of Coretta Scott King
Take a second to reflect on who you consider an inspiration or hero. Is it someone who is nationally
known or is it someone in your personal life? An individual who is truly known for her determination
and strength is Coretta Scott King. Coretta was born April 27th, 1927 in Marion, Alabama by her two
parents Obadiah and Bernice Scott. She grew up on her parents farm where she hoed and picked
cotton for her family to obtain money. As a young child she had a growing interest in singing and
music specifically with the violin. She attended Lincoln High School in Alabama and graduated
valedictorian of her class in 1945. (). After she graduated high school she immediately began her
successful journey by continuing her education at Antioch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the time period of the 1950 s, it was considered normal for a woman to stay home when there
were children involved. However, nothing could stop Coretta in the end as she accepted roles of being
a mother and a wife, but did not stop against advice to end her activism. She did acknowledge a role in
being a wife in which she sometimes stood in the shadow of her husband supporting him in everything
he was conquering, but she did not stop there. During the 50 s and 60 s Coretta worked right along
side of King with his monumental actions. For example, she took part in the Montgomery bus boycott,
helped lead with him the Civil Rights Movement, was by his side as he received the Nobel Peace Prize
in 1964, marched town to town next to King for the sake of voting right laws. Coretta even went to the
extent of traveling to Ghana with King due to the marking of the nation s independence and ventured
to India on a pilgrimage all in support of her husband. Her dedication to her husband and motivation
was represented just days after Martin s death where Coretta brought her children with her while she
lead thousands of individuals in a march to honor her husband. While supporting King, Coretta also
lead her own path by being heavily involved in the work of passing the civil rights Act which occurred
in 1964. Remarkably, even during her involvement in Civil Rights, she continued her pursuit to

Robber Barons Dbq Essay
Throughout the late 19th century, several men such as John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and
Cornelius Vanderbilt built empires in railroad construction, coal mining, and the oil industry. These
industrial leaders helped the economy flourish and created a leading industrial power in the world.
After a while, critics began to question their power and objective. Critics began to call them robber
barons for their selfish and corrupted techniques. While they took advantage of careless government
regulation and no income tax, they generated huge business that benefited the country. They employed
many people and provided critical goods and services. There is a small margin to justify the
characterizations of a robber baron for the leading industrialists of the late 19th century, but more as
captains of their respective industries. Industrialists and business men were philanthropists at these
times. Andrew Carnegie published an excerpt that largely influenced many wealthy entrepreneurs ...

reason why no one bought it. When he found a way to manufacture steel cheaper, he knew this was

The deepness in all things is extraordinary. This is also the case in Langston Hughes, Dreams The
poem Dreams is about how important dreams are and how the reader should always have dreams that

Anti Curfew Law
You can t tame a wild mustang, so why try and control teenager who wants as many freedoms as
possible. Curfews set by the Government may seem like a good idea, but it s not. The idea of laws
enforcing a curfew for teenagers is not a good one, it unfairly takes away a teenagers freedom. If there
is a law about a curfew and a teen does not like it, there is a high chance that they will just stay out
past curfew. Curfew in a household is specified by the parents. If the parents and child both state their
case on a time, and agree on it, the child will keep their word. If there is a law enforcing a curfew,
there will not always be a way for teens to try and negotiate a fair time, like they could if their parents

Also, with that law, parents will probably follow the time of that law. This means that teens cannot try
and negotiate a time that is fair. If a teen believes that the curfew time is not fair and wants hangout
with friends or go to a party, they will most likely sneak out. The point of the curfew is to keep people
safe and make sure they do not get in trouble, but if a teenager is going to sneak out anyway, what s
the point. A curfew law is a good idea on paper for parents who worry about there children, but there
is no true way to make sure they are safe without taking away there freedoms, and that is what a
Government forced curfew would do. Not all teenagers are bad and stay out past curfew just to party
and hangout with friends, sometimes teens need to stay out late. High school students have extra
curricular activities they do after school. I know from personal experiences that sometimes you can

Abstinence Education Programs Argumentative Analysis

Does abstinence only programs mean abstinence only lives for teenagers receiving this type of sexual
education? There are those who fully support abstinence only sex education while others deny its
ability and believe it only under educates teenagers. From the latter, the author claims that abstinence
only programs are not effective. He presents evidence to suggest this is valid, including that high
school students need medically accurate information on how to decrease their risk of sexually
transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy because they are sexually active. Though the

The author does not seem to be focusing on the teenagers health when much of his logos came from
the expense of sex education programs and the wasted money involved with abstinence only
programs. He stated the dollar amount spent on these programs more than five times and one time
mentioned the money spent to observe the effectiveness of these programs. One example of this is
when he criticised that this extension equals another $ 250 million for failed abstinence only until
marriage programs over the next five years (SIECUS, 2014, p.3). He also did not explicitly state how
these programs failed so the audience assumes that it failed because of his following sentence about
how taxes pay for abstinence only programs. Although money is always a factor, these programs are
being provided for a reason and are paramount in teenagers lives. The safety of teenagers is usually
the concern whether their education is abstinence based or with additional education on STIs and
unplanned pregnancy. Hence, the author should have mentioned how many unplanned pregnancies
teens have faced or a provided a statistic on the spread of STIs. Furthermore, the author did not even
provide pathos evidence that abstinence based education was harmful through a personal recollection
of someone who was affected negatively. With neither of these evidences present, the audience is left
to wonder whether abstinence only education is really affecting anyone. However, the author had a
pattern of providing mostly irrelevant statistics such as money spent on programs. Therefore the
author sometimes breaks down the opposing side, but does not strengthen his own side through his
often misused logos and a lack of

Video games are a series of images manipulated onto a screen. The screen can be a television,

video games for almost every platform ever made. In the past, video games were a thing that only
lucky, rich people had. Now they are something almost everyone has. You can find video games in
stores, book shops, garage sales, and many other places. They are the most common form of

They have a long and extensive history, and a future that is limitless. The history and future can be
broken up into 4 major parts. First, the pre 1980 s, when games like Pong, Nim and the Brown Box
console were released. Second, 1980 to 1998, when companies like Nintendo, Sega, and Sony started
to evolve to how we know them today. Third, 1999 to present day, when the greatest technological
advances have occurred and companies compete to be the first and the best. And finally the future of
video gaming, dealing with the creation of VR which can be used to train people for their jobs as well
as gaming. Pre 1980 The time period of the pre 1980 s is when video gaming was first started. This
time period started the video game revolution in an attempt to take video games out of the arcades and
put them into the home. The game Nim started it all, the Brown Box was the first ever console, and
Atari was the first ever successful gaming company. The roots of all video games and consoles can be
tracked to this time period. In 1940, the W.L. Maxon Corporation transferred an old board game to a

How Has Barbie Changed Pop Culture
The message the ever so popular Barbie doll has been trying to push to children all over the world has
varied in a way over the years. In 1959, when Barbie was first released, it was all about the girly
barbie and how women should look like and what they have to do, kids were playing with a doll that
had an ideal body and expectations barbie put in their minds were intangible.
Barbie s image has changed overs the years in effort to keep up with the change in pop culture. In the
1960 s, Barbie wore designer clothes and took most of her inspiration from the First Lady Jacqueline
Kennedy, as well as wearing mini skirts and white go go boots. During the 1970 s Barbies attire was
very much fitting for the glitz and glamour of the decade. Even Barbie s face and body have
transformed with the styles. The first Barbie doll had heavily made up eyes that looked to the side, but
by 1961 she had a more natural look, and her big, blue eyes looked straight out. Many people had
criticized Barbie s figure as being impossible for a real woman, so in 1999 Mattel introduced a doll
with a more convincing shape. Like the changes in her fashions, these changes reflected the changing
look of women through the decades, evolving from the made up and glamorous look of the 1950s ...

National Organization For Women Essay
This document was written by the National Organization for Women or also known as NOW. This
organization is standing up for the rights of women across the United States. Women were being
suppressed for decades and pushed into old traditional thoughts that are becoming outdated. The
country was advancing but only for its men. Women were still considered to be good mothers and take
of the household. The National Organization for Women argues that the world is advancing and
becoming more and more technologized, where women are needed to work in the workforce rather
than be treated less than men. Factories and many workplaces were developing efficient ways to
complete tasks that did not require the masculine men strength. As the country and world was

The NOW group believed that this nation has a capacity at least as great as other nations, to innovate
new social institutions which will enable women to enjoy true equality of opportunity and
responsibility in society, without conflict with their responsibilities as mothers and homemakers
(Johnson, 270). Allowing women to work would not only give the women justice to their entitled
freedom from the Constitution but will help the men out in their respective households. The workloads
and family s economic burdens would not only be the man s problem, the women could help the
family out by working in the workforce also. Women worked while the men were off to work during
the World War II and took care of the families, why should they stop what they started and have
learned? There was no reason for women to be denied for their rights as other groups such as African
Americans and other growing minorities were gaining rights during this time period

The Rising Cost Of Healthcare
Introduction
There have been many studies performed focusing on the rising costs of health care and some of the
findings state that the rising cost of healthcare premiums is a worldwide problem. However, I believe
they are higher in the U.S. In 2015, U.S. health care costs were $3.2 trillion. That makes healthcare
one of the largest U.S. industries, equaling 17.8 % of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in
comparison to the late 1960s; where healthcare costs were only $27 billion, or 5% of the GDP, which
averaged $9,990 per person each year. The main reason for the rising cost of healthcare is a
combination of government policies and lifestyles changes. Examples included lack of coverage or
costly coverage, lack of available coverage for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was something I needed so I could not refrain from purchasing it; had I met the deductible it would
have cost me only fifty dollars. Cancer is another example. In an article written by oncologist Lacie
Glover, her concern was about the rising cost of cancer treatment, newly approved cancer drug costs
of an average of $10,000 per month, and therapy costs averaging $30,000 per month. A patient
typically pays 20 30% out of pocket for drugs. Therefore, the year s average cost of new cancer
medications would $26,000 $36,000, in addition to their health insurance premiums. If you wonder
why insurance premiums are constantly on the rise, reflecting on the illnesses and costs to treat them.
How could we create a decrease in insurance premiums? health care specialists and physicians should
share one set of tests annually sending patient to test blood work, procedures are costly and each test is
billing separately to the insurance company. To elaborate, if a patient did a physical and blood work
yearly other physicians should get access to it within that year if there should be the need for blood
work, I would think that they should be able to use that blood similar an X ray scan. One of my main
point to my statement is that I did a complete annual lab, and less than a month I needed blood work
for insurance purposes and I had to do everything all over, that was very unnecessary if tests are
continually being repeated there is also the possibility of overtreating,

The Human Brain And Brain Disorders
the human brain can be burdened with various diseases and disorders. Since the brain acts as the
bodies control system, any malfunctions can result in serious problems to the entire system, including
memory, sensation, and even personality; factors such as illness, genetics, and trauma are a few of the
main things that cause Brain disorders. (Brain Disorders) Degenerative diseases, psychiatric diseases,
brain tumors, brain injuries, and addiction are some major illnesses that come into play. Degenerative
diseases are passed down through generations; an enormous forty five million people are affected by
these conditions, all across the world. Alzheimer s, ALS, huntington s, and parkinson s disease are all
categorized as degenerative diseases. Depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are classifies as
non other than psychiatric disorders; luckily, these disorders can be treated with therapy. There is a
variety of auspicious options that can be chosen from accordingly for the patient. Additionally, many
individuals suffer from addiction; while everyone is at risk of addiction in some way shape or form, a
few are at higher risk than others. When a person is suffering from this dreadful condition, they do not
think rationally, and tend to act upon impulses; the craving is at such an intensity in some cases, that
the individual is willing to put everything at risk, and disregard whatever the consequences may be.
Biologically, the chemical makeup and structure of the brain itself undergoes alterations under the
circumstances that the individual repeats his or her use of drugs. By exciting the nerves within the
reward center of the brain, the recipient experiences a feeling of thrill themselves. (Brain Facts) When
a brain undergoes a serious blunt trauma, There is a high chance that brain tissue, neurons, or nerves
could have been severely ravaged, and this may lead to a variation of negative conditions; hematomas,
blood clots, contusions (bruising of the brain tissue), concussions, strokes, and cerebral edema
(swelling within the skull of a person) are all high on the list of disorders caused by injury to the brain.

History of Television Essays

industries. A few examples are for surveillance in places inaccessible to or dangerous for human

An anode finger was a pencil sized tube with a small aperture at the top. Magnetic coils sprayed the
electrons emitted from the electrical image left to right and line by line onto the aperture, where they
became electric current. Both Zworykin s and Farnsworth s devices then transmitted the current to a
cathode ray tube, which recreated the image by scanning it onto a fluorescent surface.
Farnsworth applied for a patent for his image dissector in 1927. The development of the television
system was plagued by lack of money and by challenges Farnsworth s patent from the giant Radio
Corporation of America (RCA). In 1934, the British communications company, British Gaumont,

company RCA did the same. Both companies had been developing television systems of their own and

When television broadcasts became a regular occurrence after the war in 1945, Farnsworth was not

therefore obscure the main purpose of a piece. A fallacy is defined as mistaken belief based on an
unsound argument, while a bias is a prejudice in favor or against a certain thing, person, object, place,
idea, or belief. There exist countless amounts of different types of fallacies and biases, however,
regardless of whichever a piece of writing contains, when noticed fallacies and biases will negatively
affect writing. When reading and writing, one should remain aware of these fallacies, especially ad
hominem fallacies and biases. As will be displayed in both Langewiesche s and Jones s articles due to
the fact that an abundance of these, divert readers from the main idea of their pieces, cause the authors
credibility to be questioned, and therefore the credibility of the writing to be questioned as well. Ad
hominem fallacies occur when an author instead of directly addressing an opponent s argument, uses a
personal attack on his/her opponent s character or circumstances (Yapp, 2013, p.99). This fallacy
causes two effects on the reader, the first is a bias against the authors opponent, which causes writing
to be ineffective. This, is due to the fact that the reader is not forming an opinion against the authors
opponents argument, but against the authors actual opponent. The

Cilia Essay
Cilia; An Essential Motility Centre Whose Defects Are Implicated in Many Diseases
In the summer of 1674, the Dutch scientist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek looked through a homemade
microscope at a sample of rain water and revolutionized the human view of the world. What he found
was little legs that we now know are the cilia that many single celled protozoa use for locomotion.
Almost exactly 300 years later, the observations of Swedish scientists Afzelius led to another
paradigm shift, when he linked defects in the machinery required for the movement of human cilia to
Kartagener s syndrome (KS), a disease characterized by chronic sinus and respiratory infections; male
infertility; and, incredibly, the misplacement of the heart and other organs (Brown Whitman 2014). He
too came up with the hypothesis that the existence of so called sensory hairs protruding from the cell
surface into the extracellular space was to explain the poor sense of smell and decreased hearing
ability in patients with KS (Pennekamp et al. Cilia 2015). Almost two decades after Afzelius presented

The study of motile cilia has been very significant with a range of models and experiments that
scientists have conducted specifically for knowledge of the cells ambiguous occupation in the human
body. In comparison to the other study s conducted one stands out most of all. It is the the algae,
Chlamydomonas reinhartii, a biflagellate single cell organism whose cilia express a set of proteins that
provide a necessary function in the motile human cilia. The main causal difference in types of cilia
most likely derived from expression of sensory receptors on the motile cilia to attain material from the
environment. It has been posited that enhanced specialization of cilia lead to the development of
complex sensory organs such as the retina (Biosci

Banana Reef Bananas Essay
Banana farms along the Johnstone river, sending the reef bananas?
Location and current status
The Johnstone River catchment in far North Queensland is one of many rivers that is destroying the
great barrier reef, it and many other rivers in North Queensland are the home to banana and sugarcane
farms. When the area gets large amounts of rainfall, sediments run off the farms and into the Jonstone
or other rivers it has been placed next to for irrigation. The sediment contains nutrients, nitrogen and
chemicals meant to rid the farms of pests and increase productivity. These all enter the river and
eventually the sea. To Quote Martin Cunningham The Johnstone river has died the sediment is causing
the animals that usually live in the river to die or leave, the birdlife is dieing down and it is getting
progressively harder to fish in the river. Other people say that the Johnstone river is not dieing, there is
a large crocodile population. They say that there must be plenty of life in the river for the crocodiles, if
there wasn t the crocodile s would leave.

Baroque Vs Renaissance Music
Every culture and civilization has been impacted in one way or another by music. Music is a universal
phenomenon that continues to grow and develop still to this day. There are millions of people who
connect to music in some way. Some individuals simply enjoy listening to music, others enjoy playing
it, and there are some people who look deep into the trends, history, and evolution of music. In this
paper, I chose to do a comparison on the renaissance and baroque period; to analyze the differences
between the renaissance and baroque musically and socially. Both time periods impacted the
development of music and social tendencies in a crucial way.
The Renaissance was a period in history from the 14th to the 17th century. The term Renaissance
Music refers to the music composed and written during the Renaissance era. These compositions were
a huge impact on music following this time period. The Renaissance era of music began in 1440 C AD
and lasted until 1600 C AD. Through this period rhythms were buoyant, and medieval counterpoints
were further developed by renaissance composers to create fugues. A fugue is a contrapuntal
composition in which a short melody or phrase is introduced by one part and successively taken up by
others and developed by interweaving the parts. Fugues are a very popular technique still to this day,
and were used more and more through the Baroque period. The new counterpoint that was introduced
based on preference for consonance, including thirds and

Types Of Dwellings Used By Ancient Romans
Introduction Up to that time, the western world had never seen an empire as extensive and
encompassing as the Roman Empire (Mark, 2011). Even after her fall tales of her exploits continue to
be told and retold. However, the Roman Empire was not merely comprised of emperors, generals and
poets. Like all civilizations that came before it and that have come since, the domain of Rome
comprised of many different people from varying social classes who lived in homes just like people
today. For this unit s discussion, I will discuss the layout and function of the various types of
dwellings used by the ancient Romans and provide my thoughts regarding how those comparisons
compare to the dwellings of today. Discussion The type of dwelling occupied by an ancient Roman
was contingent on their place on the social ladder and their vocation (Kirby, 2001b). Furthermore,
whereas a farmer would prefer to live out in the country, a merchant, in all likelihood, would prefer to
live in the city (Kirby, 2001b). Not unlike today, a substantial portion of the urban population lived in
apartments (Kirby, 2001a). Most rentals were located in large complexes called Insula, some of which
were as tall as seventy feet (seven stories) (Kirby, 2001a). These apartments would have been crowded
usually composed of a single room that doubled as sleeping and living area (Moulton, 1998b). Tenets
would have shared a common culinary and sanitary area while plumbing would not have reached

Using Traditional Costing And Activity Based Costing
Many organisations have different products and services that they provide to their customers and it
can be extremely difficult to disperse costs between them. Some may prefer to distribute variable costs
evenly within cost objects or some may prefer to distribute costs per unit or batch taking into
consideration other factors such as machine or labour hours. There are two main systems used;
traditional costing and activity based costing (ABC). Included in this essay will be the definitions and
comparisons of the two costing systems as well as how activity based costing can lead to higher
profits. An example of a company will be given to see if adopting the ABC system can lead to an
increase in profits and will then finish with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is critical to find out the activities and the costs that occur from them so that they can then later be
allocated to a cost object (customer, service or product) that necessitates the activity to be taken ahead.
This technique is the more sensible approach for overhead allocation rather than just dispersing costs
based on machinery hours or direct labour hours.
Both traditional and activity based costing have identical models where by it starts with an overhead
cost account followed by first stage allocations to cost centres, then followed by a second stage of
allocations and finally ending at the cost object. A cost centre is a location to which overhead costs are
initially assigned (Drury, 2011, pg. 295). The major difference is in activity based costing where after
the first stage allocations instead of a cost centre it is allocated to an activity cost centre and during the
second stage of allocations activity cost drivers (a measure that has major influences on the cost of a
particular activity) are used rather than just direct labour or machine hours. The ABC system assigns
overheads to major activities whereas the traditional system overheads are normally pooled by
departments. This can be extremely beneficial to a company as they are able to spread the costs out
more because they can look more into depth of a specific product or service rather than just a
department helping

  • 2. Edward Gordon Craig Uber Marionettes Edward Gordon Craig, a prominent English set designer and theorist from 1900, designed sets and created modernist theories which greatly influenced modern theatre. Regarded as one of his most controversial essays on theatrical discourse, The Actor and the Über marionette rendered Edward Gordon Craig s critique on modern theatre. Although he appreciates actors and their work to a certain degree, Craig advocates for the complete removal of actors from theatre and warns actors of their misconceptions of acting as art form, providing the guidelines on what it means to be an artist in his eyes. Denouncing actors entirely for their emotional and human weaknesses, Craig hopes to turn to a developing alternative at the time as their replacements, large scale puppets uber marionettes whose purposeful movements, controlled emotional state, and crafted image work together to create a deliberate impassioned performance. Despite sharing similarities with Craig s uber marionettes and embodying some aspects of his philosophy, the Muppets ultimately differ in the respect that they retain and emphasize a human element from humans acting with and through a puppet. As mentioned above, Craig holds the notion that these puppets or uber marionettes will bring about a revival in modern theatre. This revival has to do with the reforming of the governing laws of theatre and acting as an art. In his essay, Craig interprets art as the desired expression of an artist s thoughts, emotions, ... • 3. Native American Themes In Louise Erdrich s Antelope Wife Louise Erdrich is a Native American author from Little Falls, Minnesota. Her mother is a Chippewa Indian and her father is German American. Through her writing, she demonstrates native ideas and culture. Native American themes are often present in her works. She shines a light on both perspectives of her background. Some of her works mention reservations in Minnesota and North Dakota which connects to her birthplace and where she grew up. Erdrich did not really look into her native heritage until she went to Dartmouth and they had just opened the Native American department. She delved more into the subject and started to use it in her writing. Erdrich gives readers, whether or not they are Native American or not, a look at Native American culture from the eyes of both natives and others in society. This theme is present in many of her works including: Antelope Wife and Future Home of a Living God. Antelope Wife is a short story by Louise Erdrich. Antelope Wife is about a Native American man belonging to the Chippewa tribe in Minnesota who is a teacher. One day he laid his eyes on four women: three daughters and their mother. He was determined to have the mother and he ends up kidnapping her. He gets her (the antelope) to fall in love with her, but he was warned by Jimmy Badger that these women are generally curse the men who go after them. Towards the end of the story, she becomes overweight and ugly and the man did not expect this to happen to him. There is already a connection to native culture in the title of this short story, Antelope . Antelope is a spirit animal in the native heritage. Antelope symbolizes being on the movie and action oriented. Deep in the fields of tall golden grasses in the desert the Antelope thrives, ever watchful and discerning ready to move in an instant. The Antelope perceives subtle body movements and signals from the other members of the herd. When danger is near they move as one, quickly and confidently with finesse and confidence, their maneuverability allows them to disappear into the vast expanse of wilderness with no more than a moments notice. (Universe of Symbolism, Antelope). This symbolism is referred to towards the end of the poem by Jimmy Badger. If you see one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Congenital Cataracts Cause Blindness Around The World Congenital Cataract is one of the leading preventable diseases that causes blindness around the world, being one of the easiest diseases to treat, the major complication being that some countries do not have the sufficient resources to treat it. The disease is formed in the eye and forms a sort of cloud in the natural lens of the eye that could eventually lead to blindness if not treated properly. This type of cataract is different from most cataracts, since congenital cataracts is present in an individual since birth, meaning that it was most likely inherited from the parents. The way that it is inherited is by some sort of abnormality, which would transpire during the making of the proteins that make the lens clear. There are many different ... They analyzed results from the aftermath of eye surgery there was a small improvement to most of the individuals vision. There were various individuals whose vision was not corrected and in fact was worsened. The children at the time were around 11 years old, so it was concluded that some of the children had had the disease for too long for it to be corrected. This underlines the significance of discovering and treating congenital cataracts at a young age, preferably as an infant. Most developing countries are still aiming to improve their health care and avoiding the consequences of congenital cataracts, yet they are in trouble with nearly 30% of health professions in Africa and Asia plan to migrate to a different country (Lenhart, 2016). In Lenhart s research article, he concludes that most troubles these developing countries have roots from financial struggles. These financial struggles lead to poor resources within the countries. Survival in Auschwitz is the unique autobiographical account of how a young man endured the atrocities of a Nazi death camp and lived to tell the tale. Primo Levi, a 24 year old Jewish chemist from Turin Italy, was captured by the fascist militia in December 1943 and deported to Camp Buna Monowitz in Auschwitz. The trip by train took 4 long days in a jam packed boxcar without food or water. Once there, interrogations by the SS of age and health determined life as a prisoner or untimely death. In the last chapter when the Germans were evacuating the camp with the healthy prisoners it was not stated where they were going. It is my impression they were headed for the Killing Machines. The appeasement of what the Nazi s were doing by other countries was not in the minds of Levi and his comrades. Survival was of the utmost importance. What was going on in the outside world was of no significance. Live to see tomorrow was the ultimate goal. The theme of Isolationism was seen throughout Survival in Auschwitz. Germany was isolated from the rest of the world and Levi was isolated from his family, friends and country. Within the camp, each hut was separated from one another and those confined to the infirmary were secluded from the rest. • 7. The War Of The Vietnam War Essay Vietnam s independence has come with much struggle, firstly with France s determination to regain the empire they had ruled for over half a century and then later with America. Because of the length and the immensely confusing nature of the Vietnam War it is impossible to reflect on America s oppression towards Vietnam without looking at the first Indochina War, where the Vietnamese fought against the domination of the French imperialism. Edward Lansdale, a former United States air force officer once stated it is like a spectator arriving in the middle of a complex drama, without true knowledge of the plot or of the identity and motivation of those in the drama. By the time the American s committed to a ground war in Vietnam, many were describing the war against France not only as a fight against colonialism but also as the beginning of the struggle against American imperialism. Both America and France assumed that the Vietnamese were unfit to govern themselves and neither would consider Vietnam gaining independence. The war period in Vietnam has a death toll so high it still remains contested, making war Vietnam s predicament for well over forty years with no other country suffering as many casualties of war since World War II. According to Aristotle, everything we do in life, we do for the sake of some good, or at least something perceived to be good (1094a1 3). When inquiring as to whether there is some good desired for its own sake, Aristotle envisioned a problem that either there is an infinite series of goods desired for the sake of something higher, in which case one s desires can never be satisfied, or there must be some highest good that is desired for its own sake and for which everything else is desired (1094a17 22). This restricted audience can limit the perception of happiness, and the use of this knowledge. Those who have serious doubts about the value of such virtuous qualities may not be convinced to adopt them. One argument against Aristotle s view of virtue as a mean state between the extremes of excess and deficiency would be social/moderate drinking of alcoholic beverages. Studies have shown that drinking only two alcoholic beverages a day can lead to alcoholism, although, one could define this behavior as acting in moderation, as one is not drinking to become intoxicated. As the alcoholism develops one may display acts of rage, violence and theft as a result of the condition. Thus, through use of moderation one displays character against moral virtue, and ultimately does not show happiness. The only way to abolish such acts is to completely relinquish alcohol, exhibiting deficiency. Through deficiency one would return to the state of character before the moderate use of alcohol, whether virtuous or not. Aristotle also claims that justice and happiness is what is good for the state, i.e. society, although society does not always act in accordance with moderation. During the flourishing Roman society, citizens would consume food in a gluttonous matter, and vomit to consume more. Though, from literature the individual citizens were conceived to be happy. In many ways, the Porfiriato brought prosperity to Mexico. But this prosperity was not equally shared. The Diaz regime worked with the hacendados, powerful, semi feudal landowners, to seize land held communally by Native Americans, to add to their estates. How that power is divided is the subjective aspect of federalism that was before the framers of the United States. Through compromise and necessity the seeds for a strong central government were planted alongside already strong state governments. Over time the seeds for strong central government grew; wars, economic fluctuations and national growth established a strong central government. As America s idea of federalism changed the central government grew more powerful, the state s government gave more power away, and local governments were established. ... Creative federalism points to a strong centralized government that initiates federal programs to fight poverty, hunger, crime, and other social issues. This stage sees a noticeable increase of power given to the national government by the Warren Court. Schreiber concludes by describing a struggle between cooperative federalism and creative federalism. He sees these two models of federalism in competition with one another on how power will be distributed between the three levels of government. This is best described by Russell Hanson, in Governing Partners, as competitive federalism , which is the idea that the three levels of government must compete for power in a zero sum game. It can be argued that we now are in a sixth stage that can be defined as competitive federalism. Recent struggles involving gay marriage, education, tax reform, and anti terrorism funding prove that a struggle for power between the three levels of government is ongoing. • 14. Martin Luther Splintering Of Religion Divine grace was a particularly prominent concern in sixteenth century Europe, it prompted the splintering of Christendom and was therefore responsible in large part for the subsequent violence. With the extensive conflict motivated by debates over the delivery of divine grace, it comes as no surprise that leading figures of the era harbored vastly differing opinions on the subject. Martin Luther, John Fisher, and Hans Staden, drawing from the exact same source material, came to drastically different conclusions regarding the bestowment, acceptance, and discovery of divine grace. Martin Luther s personal interpretation of divine grace differed so greatly from that of other christians that it facilitated the splintering of a religion. Luther s influential interpretation was formed on the basis of two claims made by St. Paul in his Letter to the Romans. First, a justified Christian lives by faith alone, and second Christ is the end and the fulfillment of all commandments for those who believe in Him, (Luther 22). Luther interpreted St. Paul s words to mean that divine grace is bestowed through faith, that Faith... will abundantly justify those who have it, such that they require nothing more to be righteous and pious, (Luther 22). The idea of being saved through nothing but faith resonated with Luther, a man obsessed with his own repentance, to the point that he visited confession several times daily (Smith). When looking for the rationale for why killing a mockingbird is atrocious you will find this. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a story of a small town, Maycomb. In this old town there is racism and rude people yet, there are also kind people like Boo Radley, Tom Robinson, and Scout Finch have something in common they are all innocent yet treated very poorly. The boo shows how hurting the innocent is not fair and not right. First, there is Boo Radley, he is comparable to a Mockingbird for copious reasons. Ever since he was a teenager he has been locked up inside his house and has never come out. He has never hurt anyone nor wanted to hurt anyone. Sadly, many people in the town (even adults) spread rumors and lies about him that make him seem very mean even though he is innocent. For example, the Finch s neighbors tell Scout, Jem, and Dill that Boo Radley hurts people and is crazy. People all around their town say this stuff too even though they don t know if it is true or not. Lastly, people judge him and don t treat him like others for reasons that are not true. Most people are, Scout when you finally see them. (Lee,323). In the book The Call it states a number of questions people often ask themselves such as who am I? Where do I belong? These are a few questions everyone has probably asked themselves once in their lifetimes and to be honest it all reflects back to their relationship with God. • 17. Actuaries and the Auditing Process ACTUARIES AND THE AUDITING PROCESS Risk is an inevitable element of any type of business with the insurance sector being no exception. Insurance companies accept various forms of risk each which can affect the ability of a company to meet its future liabilities. These risks need to be identified, analysed, and managed/mitigated as far as possible. These procedures and controls will form part of a company s risk management framework (Chen, 2010). The aim of an audit is to determine, by investigation and evaluation of unbiased evidence, whether the adequacy and implementation of established procedures comply with regulatory requirements, industry standards and company policy (Stamatis, 2002). One of the main goals of an actuarial audit is to monitor and assess the quality of work done by an insurance company s internal actuaries and to decide if the concerned financial statements present a true and fair view of the company s current financial position (International Association of Insurance Supervisors, 2009). Due to many small, and some great incidents, the world powers went to war. During the war there were many events that drastically affected the outcome. Some of these events were very influential. From the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand to the Treaty of Brest Litovsk, the war was shaped by events like this. On June 28, 1914, the Archduke of Austria Hungary, Francis Ferdinand, and his wife entered their car. About five minutes later a blast rang out. A bomb had been throw in front of his car. On February 21, 1916, the Germans launched a major offensive under the command of Prince Frederick William against Verdun. The Battle of Verdun had begun. The French soon lost Douaumont and Hardaumont but were able to eventually stop the German advance. In July the British launched an offensive on Somme which made the Battle at Verdun a little easier. By December the French had taken most of the land they lost. The Battle of Verdun was the longest and one of the bloodiest battles of the war. The Germans soon realized they couldn t kill enough French to win the war. They found themselves losing as many men as the French. Over two million soldiers from both sides took part in the battle. A combination of about 675,000 men from both sides lost their lives; 348,000 French and 328,000 Germans. On January 16, 1917, the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmermann, sent a telegram to Johann von Bernstorff, the German ambassador to the U.S. The telegram said that if the U.S. did decide to enter the war, Mexico should be asked to join as an ally to Germany. In return, Germany would help Mexico regain Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The British intercepted and deciphered the message. They gave it to the U.S. government. On March 1, President Wilson released the telegram to the press. A month later on April 6, the United States declared war on Germany and officially entered the war. The U.S. gave the Allies much ... She did acknowledge a role in being a wife in which she sometimes stood in the shadow of her husband supporting him in everything he was conquering, but she did not stop there. During the 50 s and 60 s Coretta worked right along side of King with his monumental actions. For example, she took part in the Montgomery bus boycott, helped lead with him the Civil Rights Movement, was by his side as he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, marched town to town next to King for the sake of voting right laws. Coretta even went to the extent of traveling to Ghana with King due to the marking of the nation s independence and ventured to India on a pilgrimage all in support of her husband. Her dedication to her husband and motivation was represented just days after Martin s death where Coretta brought her children with her while she lead thousands of individuals in a march to honor her husband. Robber Barons Dbq Essay Throughout the late 19th century, several men such as John Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Cornelius Vanderbilt built empires in railroad construction, coal mining, and the oil industry. These industrial leaders helped the economy flourish and created a leading industrial power in the world. After a while, critics began to question their power and objective. Critics began to call them robber barons for their selfish and corrupted techniques. While they took advantage of careless government regulation and no income tax, they generated huge business that benefited the country. They employed many people and provided critical goods and services. The Effect Of Ad Hominem Fallacies And Biases Analytical Essay on the Effect of Ad Hominem Fallacies and Biases in Writing In writing, fallacies and cognitive biases hamper the effectiveness with which an author depicts his/her points, and therefore obscure the main purpose of a piece. A fallacy is defined as mistaken belief based on an unsound argument, while a bias is a prejudice in favor or against a certain thing, person, object, place, idea, or belief. There exist countless amounts of different types of fallacies and biases, however, regardless of whichever a piece of writing contains, when noticed fallacies and biases will negatively affect writing. When reading and writing, one should remain aware of these fallacies, especially ad hominem fallacies and biases. As will be displayed in both Langewiesche s and Jones s articles due to the fact that an abundance of these, divert readers from the main idea of their pieces, cause the authors credibility to be questioned, and therefore the credibility of the writing to be questioned as well. Ad hominem fallacies occur when an author instead of directly addressing an opponent s argument, uses a personal attack on his/her opponent s character or circumstances (Yapp, 2013, p.99). This fallacy causes two effects on the reader, the first is a bias against the authors opponent, which causes writing to be ineffective. This, is due to the fact that the reader is not forming an opinion against the authors opponents argument, but against the authors actual opponent. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What he found was little legs that we now know are the cilia that many single celled protozoa use for locomotion. Almost exactly 300 years later, the observations of Swedish scientists Afzelius led to another paradigm shift, when he linked defects in the machinery required for the movement of human cilia to Kartagener s syndrome (KS), a disease characterized by chronic sinus and respiratory infections; male infertility; and, incredibly, the misplacement of the heart and other organs (Brown Whitman 2014). He too came up with the hypothesis that the existence of so called sensory hairs protruding from the cell surface into the extracellular space was to explain the poor sense of smell and decreased hearing ability in patients with KS (Pennekamp et al. Cilia 2015). Almost two decades after Afzelius presented his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The study of motile cilia has been very significant with a range of models and experiments that scientists have conducted specifically for knowledge of the cells ambiguous occupation in the human body. In comparison to the other study s conducted one stands out most of all. It is the the algae, Chlamydomonas reinhartii, a biflagellate single cell organism whose cilia express a set of proteins that provide a necessary function in the motile human cilia. The main causal difference in types of cilia most likely derived from expression of sensory receptors on the motile cilia to attain material from the environment. It has been posited that enhanced specialization of cilia lead to the development of complex sensory organs such as the retina (Biosci ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Banana Reef Bananas Essay Banana farms along the Johnstone river, sending the reef bananas? Location and current status The Johnstone River catchment in far North Queensland is one of many rivers that is destroying the great barrier reef, it and many other rivers in North Queensland are the home to banana and sugarcane farms. When the area gets large amounts of rainfall, sediments run off the farms and into the Jonstone or other rivers it has been placed next to for irrigation. The sediment contains nutrients, nitrogen and chemicals meant to rid the farms of pests and increase productivity. These all enter the river and eventually the sea. To Quote Martin Cunningham The Johnstone river has died the sediment is causing the animals that usually live in the river to die or leave, the birdlife is dieing down and it is getting progressively harder to fish in the river. Other people say that the Johnstone river is not dieing, there is a large crocodile population. They say that there must be plenty of life in the river for the crocodiles, if there wasn t the crocodile s would leave. What are some of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 42. Baroque Vs Renaissance Music Every culture and civilization has been impacted in one way or another by music. Music is a universal phenomenon that continues to grow and develop still to this day. There are millions of people who connect to music in some way. Some individuals simply enjoy listening to music, others enjoy playing it, and there are some people who look deep into the trends, history, and evolution of music. In this paper, I chose to do a comparison on the renaissance and baroque period; to analyze the differences between the renaissance and baroque musically and socially. Both time periods impacted the development of music and social tendencies in a crucial way. The Renaissance was a period in history from the 14th to the 17th century. The term Renaissance Music refers to the music composed and written during the Renaissance era. These compositions were a huge impact on music following this time period. The Renaissance era of music began in 1440 C AD and lasted until 1600 C AD. Through this period rhythms were buoyant, and medieval counterpoints were further developed by renaissance composers to create fugues. A fugue is a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody or phrase is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by interweaving the parts. Fugues are a very popular technique still to this day, and were used more and more through the Baroque period. The new counterpoint that was introduced based on preference for consonance, including thirds and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Types Of Dwellings Used By Ancient Romans Introduction Up to that time, the western world had never seen an empire as extensive and encompassing as the Roman Empire (Mark, 2011). Even after her fall tales of her exploits continue to be told and retold. However, the Roman Empire was not merely comprised of emperors, generals and poets. Like all civilizations that came before it and that have come since, the domain of Rome comprised of many different people from varying social classes who lived in homes just like people today. For this unit s discussion, I will discuss the layout and function of the various types of dwellings used by the ancient Romans and provide my thoughts regarding how those comparisons compare to the dwellings of today. Discussion The type of dwelling occupied by an ancient Roman was contingent on their place on the social ladder and their vocation (Kirby, 2001b). Furthermore, whereas a farmer would prefer to live out in the country, a merchant, in all likelihood, would prefer to live in the city (Kirby, 2001b). Not unlike today, a substantial portion of the urban population lived in apartments (Kirby, 2001a). Most rentals were located in large complexes called Insula, some of which were as tall as seventy feet (seven stories) (Kirby, 2001a). These apartments would have been crowded usually composed of a single room that doubled as sleeping and living area (Moulton, 1998b). Tenets would have shared a common culinary and sanitary area while plumbing would not have reached those residing on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Using Traditional Costing And Activity Based Costing Many organisations have different products and services that they provide to their customers and it can be extremely difficult to disperse costs between them. Some may prefer to distribute variable costs evenly within cost objects or some may prefer to distribute costs per unit or batch taking into consideration other factors such as machine or labour hours. There are two main systems used; traditional costing and activity based costing (ABC). Included in this essay will be the definitions and comparisons of the two costing systems as well as how activity based costing can lead to higher profits. An example of a company will be given to see if adopting the ABC system can lead to an increase in profits and will then finish with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is critical to find out the activities and the costs that occur from them so that they can then later be allocated to a cost object (customer, service or product) that necessitates the activity to be taken ahead. This technique is the more sensible approach for overhead allocation rather than just dispersing costs based on machinery hours or direct labour hours. Both traditional and activity based costing have identical models where by it starts with an overhead cost account followed by first stage allocations to cost centres, then followed by a second stage of allocations and finally ending at the cost object. A cost centre is a location to which overhead costs are initially assigned (Drury, 2011, pg. 295). The major difference is in activity based costing where after the first stage allocations instead of a cost centre it is allocated to an activity cost centre and during the second stage of allocations activity cost drivers (a measure that has major influences on the cost of a particular activity) are used rather than just direct labour or machine hours. The ABC system assigns overheads to major activities whereas the traditional system overheads are normally pooled by departments. This can be extremely beneficial to a company as they are able to spread the costs out more because they can look more into depth of a specific product or service rather than just a department helping ...
