The study sought to investigate the effect of individual counselling on academic performance of underachievers’ pupil in Maimusari Public Primary School, Jere local Government Area, Borno State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to examine the nature and causes of underachievement in Maimusari Public Primary School, also the effect of individual counselling on academic performance of the underachievers’ pupil. Based on these objectives, two research questions and one null hypothesis were answered and tested respectively. Quasi-experimental design was used for the study. Twenty-two underachieving pupils were purposively sampled from the population of the study. Both questionnaire and interview were used as method of data collection; Effect of Individual Counselling on Underachievers in Public Primary Schools (EICUPPS) and interview schedule. The data collected was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study discovered that coming late to school, not having complete learning material, depression, anxiety and teachers attitude in the classroom were the major causes of underachievement in Maimusari primary school. The study also revealed that individual counselling has helped the pupils in overcoming their learning barriers. It is therefore, concluded that individual counselling has significant effect on underachievement among pupils of public primary school in Maiduguri, Borno State. It is recommended among others that class teachers need to be oriented on how to identify underachieving pupils in their various classes and inform the appropriate authority for proper management.

The essence of this research was to investigate the influence of self-esteem on students’ academic success in Calabar metropolis of Cross River State of Nigeria. Two hypotheses were raised to guide the study. Literature review was carried out accordingly based on the variables of the study. The random sampling technique was adopted which sampled three hundred and forty-five (345) students who were drawn from fifteen secondary schools which represented all the public secondary schools in the area of study. The Self-Esteem and Academic success questionnaire (SEASO) and Achievement Test in mathematics and English Language (ATMEL) were used to collect data. The independent t-test analysis was used to test the hypotheses of the study. The findings showed that there is a significant difference in the academic success of students with positive self-esteem than those with negative self-esteem. This implies that self-esteem significantly influences students’ academic success. Based on findings of the study, it was recommended that students should boost their self-esteem as it is an important factor that strengthens the prediction of academic success in Mathematics and English Language. There should be school counseling intervention in improving self-esteem among students. Students should be trained on how to improve greatly in their self-esteem and academic efficacy.

The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. Career preference is the process of decision-making. A great number of studies,
Researches, and write-ups has been conducted for a period of time and still emerged as
one of the top-priority researches due to rapid changing and need of time. This chapter is
the presentation of literature and studies from foreign to local which may directly or
indirectly bearing to study at hand. Relevance to present studies will give a big picture
why these literature and studies from foreign to local are used.
According to Howard and Ill7 stressed out that whenever students are in their high school
experience, they are the center of learning. In a traditional high school, the center of the
system is the content or subject, not student learning. Howard and Ill present a system to
promote the shift from traditional content or subject –centered high schools to student-
centered high schools which is called as Collaborative Career Pathways – a system of
organizing the student learning interests and aptitudes around career paths. It provides a
structure for students to reference their learning and comment each year of their high
school experience. It allows students to plan and practice their skills while creating a
smooth and successful transition to a post-secondary option.
Goffredson’s Developmental Theory of Occupational Aspirations8 describes how people
become attracted to certain occupations. Self-concept in vocational development is the
key factor to career selection and people want jobs that are compatible with their
2. self-image. The key determinants of self-concept are one’s social class, level of
intelligence, and experiences with sex-typing. Roe’s need approach9 emphasized that
early childhood experiences play an important role in finding satisfaction in one’s chosen
field. The need structure of the individual, according to Roe, would be greatly influenced
by early childhood frustrations and satisfactions.
According to John Holland (2010), individuals are attracted to a given career by
their particular personalities and numerous variables that constitute their
backgrounds. First of all, career choice is an expression of, or an extension of personality
into the world of work followed by subsequent identification with specific occupational
stereotypes. Accordingly, one chooses a career to satisfy preferred modal personal
orientation. Modal personal orientation is a developmental process established through
heredity and the individual’s life history of reacting to environmental demands. If the
individual has developed a strong dominant orientation, satisfaction is probable in a
corresponding occupational environment. If, however the orientation is one of indecision,
the livelihood of satisfaction diminishes.

that those students chose more difficult goals than students with low self-esteems. She

students to set career goals. The plan requires a total community effort through educators,
parents, and businesses. Students must be given an opportunity to identify and explore
their desired careers. They can accomplish this through the “School to Work Transition”
or “Job Shadowing Program.” Through the cooperative efforts of the entire community,
students can identify career choices, set career goals, and have higher self-esteems at an
early age. Ultimately, they will further their education and have a better chance of
succeeding in the “do or die” world in which we live.
According to Elmer (1989)14, career planning is life goal-setting. Without such a plan,
it is like making a journey to an unfamiliar destination without a map. He proposed a
Career Planning Guide that will help the students in choosing their appropriate course
from planning a career, steps in planning career, goal-setting and self-understanding.
Also, it reveals that guidance and counseling is intervention of underemployment
individuals and career preparedness must be initiated.

4. The studies reviewed provide ample evidence that career development program is in
need and must have a collaborative efforts made by school administrator, teachers,
and mostly guidance counselor in crystallizing student’s career decision. The
teaching methodologies or strategies must be improved and concentrate on student’s
learning and not by subjects.
