2. CHAPTER 1
The Problem and its Background
Introduction
Teacher is not a dispenser of knowledge or a person in charge of the educating that goes on in a
classroom. Moreover, is one of producing the climate providing the resources, stimulating the students to
explore, investigate and seek answer, in a rich environment than a director (Howes, 2007)
The teacher must also see the nobility and capacity in each student recognizing that a lack of
opportunity is different from lack of capacity. Competent teacher produces excellent students (Costa AL).
Tan 2002) stated that effective instructions in studies can only be realized when the teacher is
efficient in the subject content and in the methods of teaching the subject. One of the key points of social
studieseducation is not only to teach people studies of facts, but on how to learn social inquiry to equip
The country’s students for the challenges not only of higher education, also in the lifelong learning.
Moreover, according to Jacetot (1997) teaching is something that takes place only when learning
does. No matter what the teacher is doing in her class, if the students are not learning something
significant, she is not teaching.
Furthermore, Bernardo (2007) posited that the supreme valve of a teacher lies not only in the
regular performances of routine duties, but in his power to lead and inspire his students through the
influence of his/her own mental and moral personality example.
According to the result of Regional Achievement Test 2012 – 2013, Bataan National High School
had a low performance with regards in Social Studies Subject.
3. Based on the different researchers about the performance of students in School, students usually
get low performance in social studies most especially in Asian History and World History. Student’s
achievements and performances are greatly attributed to the teacher’s performance.
In the reports of the study of (Mendoza and Monzon, 2003), research findings confirmed that
teacher quality appears to be the most important factor influencing student performance.
This poor student’s achievement has prompted educational researches worldwide to continuously
identify factors inside and outside the classroom affect student achievement; however experts claim that
the key factor in what comes out at goes on in the classroom.
Due to the aforementioned reasons, I would like to determine the determinants in the
effectiveness of Social Studies Teachers in the daily classroom situations. The re-searchers also want to
identify the variables that affect the effectiveness of the Social Studies Teachers.

Scope and Delimitation
This study is focused on the factors affecting the teaching effectiveness of Social Studies teachers
in Bataan National High School SY 2012-2013.
It involved 22 sections with 6 social studies teachers. The researchers used stratified random
sampling in selecting student’s respondents.
On the other hand, the researchers use descriptive consolation method in the study employing
assessment tools and questionnaire’s gathering pertinent data and information.
Furthermore, the researchers want to determine the level of effectiveness of social studies teacher;
teacher related: student related and school related variables. The teacher’s related variables involved
personal (gender, age and civil status and professional attributes (field of specialization, education
qualification, trainings and seminars attended and work attitude. The school related variables involved

Performance Appraisal for Teachers (PAST) from the DepEd rated by the principal of the said secondary
school in Bataan.
7. In determining the profile of social studies teachers such as: gender, age and civil status the

determining the teacher’s effectiveness in teaching social studies as perceived by students and teachers
themselves.
In determining if there is a significant relationship between teachers and students related factors,
teachers and school related factors and teachers and teacher related factors to the level of the effectiveness
of the teachers in the perception of the students and teacher’s on teaching social studies, the researcher
employed person(1) Product- Moment of correlation and t-test of significance.
