Franklin D. Roosevelt overcame a childhood illness to become a successful New York politician and later president during the Great Depression. As president, FDR launched the New Deal which included massive relief programs and economic reforms through agencies like the CCC, FERA, and CWA. The First New Deal focused on relief and reform, while the Second New Deal aimed for greater economic security through programs like Social Security. FDR faced criticism from some but remained widely popular, winning re-election by a landslide in 1936.
