The games industry is challenging for new developers due to high costs of development and the need to share profits with publishers, retailers, and advertisers. Independent ("indie") developers can self-publish free-to-play games and include microtransactions or DLC to fund ongoing development, but this approach carries high risks if the game does not attract enough players. Larger studios can take on greater risks by developing triple-A games, but must manage budgets carefully to avoid bankruptcy if a game or series underperforms commercially. Developers constantly need to adapt to audience demands and find new revenue streams like early access to stay financially viable over the long term.

Players roll 4 dice and earn money based on the number of fours rolled: $0 for 0 fours, $5 for 1 four, $15 for 2 fours, $25 for 3 fours, and $50 for 4 fours. Solving the Biggest Question in Social Casino | Al ThomasJessica Tams
Delivered at Casual Connect Europe 2017. In this lecture, industry veteran Al Thomas will discuss the ins and outs of social slots design and answer the biggest question often asked by social casino newcomers and veterans alike: “If the games don’t pay, then why do they play?”
This game costs $50 per roll and involves rolling two dice. Rolling a 3 or 11 pays $100, while rolling a 2 or 12 pays $500. Otherwise nothing is paid out. Theoretically, players can expect to lose $11 on average per roll due to a mean win of $38.89 and the $50 cost to play. However, experimental results from a trial of 50 rolls showed the casino losing $1,400 total due to higher than expected wins of $500. The high variance in potential prizes makes it difficult to improve the game.

Online gaming can take many forms including massively multiplayer online games accessed through websites or downloaded games. There are several main genres including action, fighting, adventure, role-playing, simulation, strategy, shooting, racing, sports, rhythm, and puzzle games. Games are promoted through word-of-mouth, online advertisements, television commercials, and billboards. Payment options vary by platform but include purchasing codes from stores, using credit cards, mobile payments, and PayPal. While gaming has pros like high-quality experiences, it also has cons such as high up-front costs and potential for eye strain on small screens.

There are many reasons to opt for the Free-To-Play monetization model. At the forefront is that Free-to-Play games are generating more money than premium sales at nearly a 10-1 margin.
It is not just the big AAA productions that can succeed. With an average of 15,000,000 Steam Players online at any given time and 90 million console gamers in the US alone, strictly considering a mobile publishing avenue severely limits your audience reach. In addition, plenty of these platforms are doing their best to embrace the F2P evolution in gaming.

- Social networks in MMOs can be defined as the social structures and relationships that develop between players through gameplay and interaction tools. They often resemble real-world social networks.
- EVE Online exemplifies how robust social networks form in MMOs. Players organize into corporations and alliances that may include thousands of members and function similarly to companies and nations. Communication tools are essential for coordination.
- As player groups grow larger, game designers must consider how to support emerging leadership roles and social hierarchies to ensure networks remain fun and don't disrupt new player experiences. The lines between MMOs and social media will continue to blur as virtual communities deepen.
The document discusses the future of monetization in social games and gaming. It covers trends like freemium models with microtransactions and virtual goods becoming more popular. Hybrid models combining subscriptions, advertising, and microtransactions are also discussed. Maximizing lifetime user value through retention and monetization while keeping acquisition costs low is key to profitability. Understanding user demographics and testing various monetization strategies is important to find what works best. The social gaming industry is still growing and innovating with new models and markets emerging over time.
Monetization often ends up being an afterthought which means that it frequently doesn't tie in with other game elements. How do developers make monetization an integral part of the game development process? What factors do developers need to consider as part of game design? See this presentation to find out.

Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
