In this session, Kiran demonstrates how to centralize all the CloudStack-related logs in one place using Elastic Search and generate beautiful dashboards in Grafana. Filebeat Architecutre
• Filebeat is designed to ship log files. Filebeat helps keep things simple by offering a lightweight way
(low memory footprint) to forward and centralize logs and files

Podman was created to be an alternative to Docker. It bears many similarities to the popular containerization tool, but it also differs in some important aspects. Podman is daemonless, unlike Docker, which uses a client-server paradigm. While Docker needs a daemon process to maintain the connection between the client and the server, Podman is a single main process with containers as child processes. Due to its architecture, Docker requires root privileges. Podman is rootless by design. Docker is a monolithic platform that strives to be an all-in-one solution for container management. Podman, on the other side, focuses on running containers. It utilizes specialized tools for other functionalities - for example, it uses Buildah for building images, and skopeo for image management and distribution.

Many companies are trying to create new business applications on a concept of IoT such as smart city, connected vehicle or smart grid. The platform for IoT applications has some unprecedented characteristics: (1) needs to accept huge number of connections simultaneously (2) needs to be highly reliable and secure (3) needs to be highly scalable. We have designed, prototyped and evaluated a highly reliable IoT platform for collecting and storing large-scale data. We explained our use case and architecture of IoT platform. We are tackling the following very high requirements during the process of prototyping and evaluating the platform. • Receiving and storing messages from over 10M clients concurrently • Highly reliable architecture of message broking without losing messages • Instant scale-out to process burst traffic rapidly We also discussed how we can adopt OpenStack to IoT backend and share ideas for its enhancement.

SFHUG presentation from February 2, 2016. One of the key values of the Hadoop ecosystem is its flexibility. There is a myriad of components that make up this ecosystem, allowing Hadoop to tackle otherwise intractable problems. However, having so many components provides a significant integration, implementation, and usability burden. Features that ought to work in all the components often require sizable per-component effort to ensure correctness across the stack. Lenni Kuff explores RecordService, a new solution to this problem that provides an API to read data from Hadoop storage managers and return them as canonical records. This eliminates the need for components to support individual file formats, handle security, perform auditing, and implement sophisticated IO scheduling and other common processing that is at the bottom of any computation. Lenni discusses the architecture of the service and the integration work done for MapReduce and Spark. Many existing applications on those frameworks can take advantage of the service with little to no modification. Lenni demonstrates how this provides fine grain (column level and row level) security, through Sentry integration, and improves performance for existing MapReduce and Spark applications by up to 5×. Lenni concludes by discussing how this architecture can enable significant future improvements to the Hadoop ecosystem. About the speaker: Lenni Kuff is an engineering manager at Cloudera. Before joining Cloudera, he worked at Microsoft on a number of projects including SQL Server storage engine, SQL Azure, and Hadoop on Azure. Lenni graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in computer science and computer engineering.

In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU).
