Specialised Cells
• Some cells are special shapes and have
special jobs
• Can you think of any examples?
Red Blood Cell
• Carries oxygen
around the body
• No nucleus and
large surface area
• Is found in the
blood
White Blood Cell
• Defends the body
against
microorganisms
Sperm Cell
• Is the male sex cell
• Contains DNA from the male to pass onto
the baby
• Fertilises the egg cell
Egg Cell (Ovum)
• The female sex cell
• Contains DNA from
the female to pass
onto the baby
• Is fertilised by the
sperm cell
Root hair cell
• Is where absorption of water occurs in
plants
• Has a large surface area
Guard Cell
• Are present on the
underside of
leaves
• Can open or close
to reduce water
loss
